[Click Below for Full Description]

Marcus Garvey)
Marcus Garvey, Kingston Jamaica, 1933. One page, 11 x 8 1/2 inches, on Marcus Garvey Appreciation Fund letterhead; moderate toning, folds. VG+. This is a mimeographed fundraising appeal over Garvey''s signature. It was written after Garvey had been released from prison and deported to Jamaica. He says in part, "I have tried for years to do the best for my Race, but unfortunately I have had many hard hits . . . I have had to make tremendous sacrifices and now I am caught to the hilt. I have had to mortgage my home and personal properties here to carry on the work of service to the race, but due to the lack of loyalty on the part of those who should co-operate for the general good . . . I am about to lose my home and all I possess except in the next twenty days at most I can pay off ten thousand dollars." Two years later, Garvey would leave Jamaica for London. This letter comes with a mimeographed, retained copy of a dramatic telegram sent by the American Negro Labor Congress to Garvey while he was imprisoned in Atlanta. "Your imprisonment is an act of brutal persecution and an attack against all of our suffering people. We demand your unconditional and immediate release and urge you to fight against being deported." This telegram is a single page, 5 x 8 1/2 inches; worn with tape repairs, tears and pencil edits. [Chicago, October 1925]. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 1 pages [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Moscow: Izogiz, 1933. 664 pp.: ill., 16 ills. 26x18 cm. In original full cloth with gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. Slightly rubbed, few ink marks, otherwise very good. First and only edition. One of 3000 copies. Very rare. This is the first fundamental work on the art of the Soviet Union from 1917 to 1932, gathering all important documents and publications. The book presents three chronological periods - the military communism, periods of recovery and reconstruction - detailing what art groups were established and how the state responded on them. The book features the manifests of futurist, abstract, productive and social realist art groups, the reports of state organizations and art institutes, publications on the exhibitions. Some black-and-white and colorful illustrations on the separate leaves accompanied the text. Period after the Revolution was one of the most interesting and intense times in the Russian art history. It would seem that everything was as before: artists united, dispersed, rumbled with manifestos, arranged exhibitions, moved from group to group. However, after the revolution, a new and very active participant appeared in the familiar space - the state. It had the power and many ways to encourage and punish. This was an unusual situation, because before the state was not very interested in artistic ideas. Looking ahead, when in 1932 the state decreed the closure of all artistic associations, it would be a perfectly logical gesture on its part - it is impossible to control what moves and changes. School unions, gathered around the central fi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Taken in the early 1930's, they depict the streets and gardens of nighttime Paris. He was one of the numerous Hungarian artists who flourished in Paris beginning between the World Wars. Halász's job as a journalist and his love of the city, whose streets he often wandered late at night, led to photography. BRASSAI and Paul Morand
Paris: Edition Arts et Mtiers Graphiques, 1933. Paris: Edition Arts et Métiers Graphiques, 1933. Former owner's innocuous book plate, signature that reads "Brassai", but likely not in the photographer's hand, light edge creases to the bottom corners, gently handled with minor wear; a solid, very good copy lacking serious defects in photo-illustrated spiral-bound wrappers.. First Edition. Spiral bound quarto, sixty-four gravure plates. The best-known and most iconic of the great Paris photobooks, printed in a deep gravure so tactile it seems almost as if charcoal will rub off on the hands of the viewer. The cobblestone covers and endpapers are particularly evocative. (Parr / Badger, v1, 134; Roth 76-77).

It is illustrated with 7 charts and has 137, bright clear pages. The boards are covered with black cloth. It has a single copyright date 1933 and NAP. The full title is "After Reflation What? Alfred Hitchcock Suspense THE PARADINE CASE Script & Press Archive 1933 to 1961 Alfred Hitchcock Suspense THE PARADINE CASE Script & Press Archive 1933 to 1961 POB#52891 The Paradine Case, a large archive including scripts & materials from early development to promotion. Spans nearly 30 years from novel adaptation at MGM to promotions and trailer editing by Selznick Releasing Company, and much in between. From 1933 to 1961, most material dates from active film production in 1946, 1947, and 1948. Not rich in imagery, though some advertising material is all illustrations. Profound depth and detail in novel-to-screenplay to the final script metamorphosis. A superior, detailed demonstration of Alfred Hitchcock's careful methodology in crafting plot and dialogue. Often overlooked by Hitchcock fans are the many hands and minds who labored to develop his scripts. The script professionals get full recognition in the present archive. . PROVENANCE: Perhaps a business file and possibly discarded from a studio or legal office. That would account for the breadth and multiple copies found in the archive (in other words, a collector would probably not acquire multiple copies of the same script). I acquired the archive from the Estate of Peter Howard of Serendipity Books in Berkeley. Mr. Howard purchased scripts from scouts who probably acquired them from original owners, though that is not established. CONTENTS & NOTES: . 47 items, mostly scripts.
