Albert Einstein & Sigmund Freud
Dijon: This is #281 of a limited printing of 3000 copies of Pourquoi la Guerre? (62 numbered pages), published by the Institut International de Coopération Intellectuelle in March, 1933. This is one of the french language copies of this first edition, which was published in French, English and German, of the 1932 correspondence between Albert Einstein (July) and Sigmund Freud (September) regarding the origins and nature of wars. Issued weeks after the ascension to power of the Nazi regime, with Hitler at its head, this was immediately banned in Germany, with almost all the German-language copies burned by the Nazis. The cover (app. 6.5" x 9") has sunning to its borders, shallow wear to the ends of the more notably sunned spine, and pencil notations to the top of the back cover. There are no deep tears or prominent stains. The lettering and art are unfaded and legible. The inside is very good, with no stamps or other attachments, no writing or notations. There are a few cracked gutters. BOSCANA, Father Geronimo (1776-1831), ROBINSON, Alfred (transl.).
Santa Ana, CA: Fine Arts Press, 1933. Santa Ana, CA:: Fine Arts Press, 1933., 1933. Folio. 247, [3] pp. Color frontispiece, illustrations. Brown cloth-backed gilt-stamped boards, gilt-stamped paper spine label; corner bumped. Ownership blind stamp of G. S. A. [Mrs. G. S. Achilles], Fountain Oaks, Morgan Hill, California; some minor stains to title page, occasional pencil marginalia, else very good. Limited edition of 500 copies. Colored plates from original design cut in linoleum by Jean Goodwin, and printed in oil paints. The book itself was planned and published by Thomas E. Williams, director of the Fine Arts Press in Santa Ana. The book is early ethnography of the Takic-speaking Mission Indians of coastal Southern California. The titular Chinigchinich, also known as Quaoar, is a character from Takic mythology, variously described as a creator deity, demigod, or hero, who became associated with the figure of Christ after the Takic peoples were converted. Boscana's account is one of the few reliable sources regarding the religious and cultural practices of the Mission Indians, as their forcible relocation to 15 Franciscan ministries in the early 19th century resulted in the loss of much of the oral histories and traditional practices of the tribes.

Winston Churchill
Winston Churchill, Seeing Britain Squandering American Goodwill, Writes: “I feel sure that what has happened has done no end of harm…I am very anxious about the future.” Martin Gilbert quoted this letter in his book, “Churchill and America” The retained copy of the report is still present, and is the only written report to Churchill from his network of supporters during the Wilderness Years that we can recall seeing on the market Among the public men of influence, only Churchill recognized the profound peril to the world that the Nazis and Fascists represented. He spoke out in Parliament, on the radio, in his newspaper columns, anywhere and everywhere, demanding the government wake up and prepare. As early as 1933, Churchill warned in the House of Commons, “Those Germans are not looking for equal status. They are looking for weapons.” He soon gathered around him a band of like-minded supporters who saw the menace and the potentially fatal nature of the threat. But these men were a small minority, and none of them were in the upper reaches of government. The men who were, the prime ministers and party leaders, not only disagreed with Churchill but considered him a loose cannon and an annoyance. Neville Chamberlain showed the attitude when he later wrote, "The real danger to this country is Winston. He is the warmonger, not Hitler." In 1934, in scenes reminiscent of the best spy dramas, Churchill held clandestine meetings at Chartwell, where he was briefed on the actual situation in Germany by the government and military men in his network, men in positio … [Click Below for Full Description]

FLOWERS]
1933. [FLOWERS]. KANJI SHÔHIN GASHÛ {Kyoto, MARIA Gabo, Showa 8 [1933]} 29.5 x 41.6 cm., 15 oblong color woodblock prints of flowers, many in fan format. Maria Gabo was a very skillful woodblock printing house in the 1930s. Their aesthetic sense differs from others of the period, the pallette is subtler, the printing more "boneless" - overall a more painterly effect is achieved in this group of prints by two of the most celebrated Kyoto artists of the day, Kobayashi Kanji (1892-1974) and Matsumura Suiho. Here, MARIA has created prints embellished with all the effects of a deluxe production, bokashi, mica, overprinting, etc., etc. The original ribbon-bound boards with printed papertitle label are worn, the prints themselves are very good. Very unusual collection, MARIA Gabo productions have almost always been broken up for the prints. Complete.

Winston S. Churchill
George G. Harrap & Co 1933-1938, London. This is a finely bound, four-volume set of Winston Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough. This excellent, full set of first edition, first printings is sumptuously bound by the renowned Bayntun-Riviere bindery of Bath, England. The half-leather bindings feature sumptuously grained red morocco over red cloth boards with generous leather corners, hubbed spines with gilt-decorated spine bands, gilt ruled, printed, and decorated compartments, gilt-rule transitions, head and foot bands, gilt top edges, and laid paper end sheets. Condition of the set is fine. The bindings are superb, with no appreciable wear or toning. The contents are worthy of the bindings – clean and bright for the edition, with no previous ownership marks, bright gilt top edges, clean fore edges, and only a trivial hint of spotting that appears confined to the prelims of the first volume. Winston Churchill's biography of the first Duke of Marlborough was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. The final volume was published on the eve of the Second World War in 1938. The 1930s saw Churchill pass into his sixties with his own future as uncertain as that of his nation. It is perhaps not incidental that Churchill … [Click Below for Full Description]

Churchill, Winston
The first British edition, brought out by the English publisher Harrap over a period of five year ( commencing in 1933 and ending in 1938. ) While Harraps published the set in four volumes, the American publisher Scribners opted to split the British volumes one and two into two volumes each. So while content is identical; the American set runs to six volumes, and the British set four volumes. All four volumes herein are first editions. Illustrated with maps and photos. Volume one was published in 1933, Volume two in 1934, volume three in 1936, and lastly volume four in 1938, Bound in publisher's red cloth with beveled edges. The first three volumes bear the spine fade which is peculiar to this set ( peculiar because the spines of volumes one, two and three are always faded, and volume four somehow manages to escape the fate. Obviously, a fade resistant cloth or treatment was used in the binding of volume four. This set is very good with a bit of foxing to the preliminary sheets, and the previously noted fade to the spines of volumes one through three. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Winston S. Churchill
London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1933. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed British first edition, first printing of the first volume of Churchill's Marlborough: His Life and Times, suitable for filling a jacketed first printing set. This first volume covers Marlborough's story up to the 1702 death of William III. It is a substantial 612 pages with 35 illustrations, 14 maps and plans, and 8 document facsimiles. This copy is near fine in a very good dust jacket which is the correct – and quite elusive – first printing, confirmed by an unclipped lower front flap that retains the original price with no mention of “2nd Impression” or “3rd Impression”. Collectors building jacketed first printing sets must beware of jackets that have been price clipped to remove the mention of later impressions and then paired with first printing books. This first printing jacket is notably complete, with only a miniscule chip to the spine head and fractional loss at the corners. The jacket bears several vertical creases, at the spine and both faces, as well as modest wear to extremities, including a .75 inch (1.9 cm) closed tear at the upper front hinge and wrinkling at the lower front corner. Despite the creases and wear, this jacket is noteworthy for retaining excellent original dove gray color; the jackets typically suffer significant spine toning, but this jacket shows only the slightest color shift between the faces and spine. The jacket is protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. The near fine volume beneath is square, clean, and be … [Click Below for Full Description]
