Serdants, Arnolds
Riga: Latvijas ārpusskolas izglītības padom, 1933. Octavo (20 × 13.8 cm). Original photo-illustrated wrappers; 58, [2] pp. Wrappers lightly soiled; still about very good. Scarce work, in Latvian, which details the process of creating political posters and wall newspapers using various visual components. It reproduces numerous examples of successful designs, many of them incorporating photo-montage to communicate a political message. These likely include numerous unrecorded works by key designers of the Latvian avant-garde, such as Niklavs Strunke and Ernests Kālis. The style is recognizably that of the Latvian socialist periodicals of the 1920s and early 1930s, such as Signāls and Trībine, to which Serdants contributed. His guidebook covers aspects such as composition, symbolism, layout, and typographic design. With an unattributed wrapper design, incorporating typography and photo-montage (according to Fraser, by Arvīds Segliņš). Serdants (1904-1980) was a teacher and writer from Latvia, who also wrote on questions of visual culture and the cinema. Printed by the typography "Nākotnes kultura" ("Future culture") in Riga. A revised edition was issued in 1940. Fraser L365. KVK, OCLC only show the copy at NYPL.

Izd-vo Mosoblispolkoma, Moscow, 1933. 38, [2] pp.: ill. 21x15 cm. In original constructivist wrappers. Very good. Two small tears of the spine, light browning of the first and last pages from the covers. Inscribed by S.A. Auslender to Y.M. Slonov («In memory of hard and happy years of the first five years of MTYuZ»). First and only edition. One of 2000 copies. Very rare. Moscow Young Spectator's Theatre (MTYuZ) was founded in 1926 by a small group of acting youth under the leadership of O.V. Rudakova (not to confuse with the first theatre for children and youth founded in 1920 under the same name, TYuZ was a standard name for such theatres across the Soviet Union). MTYuZ was a mobile theatre company which staged productions in worker's clubs, schools, squares. Its work was dedicated to bringing theatre to children of working suburbs (while two other Moscow children's theatre were stationary and mostly attended by people living in the centre). Another difference was the repertoire. MTYuZ was focused on bringing political agenda and other social issues to children's attention. They also developed a new form of a play - a play-game where spectators became its participants. Later this form was adopted in many other children's theatres. The theatre also actively used smaller forms for their performances because they toured even on the farthest outskirts where there were no stages or any equipment. In the first year the theatre gave 132 performances, mostly in Moscow suburbs. Third year was marked by 590 shows and establishment of the second collective. They played for different … [Click Below for Full Description]

DAM, H. [HENRIK].
Kjøbenhavn, Arnold Busck, 1933. Royal8vo. In the original printed wrappers. A few nicks to extremities and previous owner's name to half title. Otherwise a very fine and clean copy. 162 pp. ¶ First printing of the influential Danish biochemist and physiologist Henrik Dam's thesis on the biological significance of the sterines. Dam was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1943 for his work in discovering vitamin K and its role in human physiology, the present work being a seminal step towards this. "During the years 1932 and 1933 Dam worked at the laboratory of Rudolf Schoenheimer in Freiburg, Germany, thanks to a Rockefeller fellowship he obtained to further his studies of the metabolism of sterols. In 1933 he received the D.Sc. in biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen with a thesis entitled Nogle undersøgelser over sterinernes biologiske betydning (Some Investigations on the Biological Significance of the Sterols). The next year Dam worked with Paul Karrer in Zurich. He continued to hold his post as associate professor until his appointment as professor of biochemistry at the Polytechnic Institute in Copenhagen. This appointment, however, was in absentia, because since 1940 Dam was on a lecture tour to the United States and Canada under the auspices of the American-Scandinavian Foundation. The tour was planned before the occupation of Denmark by German troops in April 1940." (DSB).

BOSCANA, Father Geronimo (1776-1831), ROBINSON, Alfred (transl.).
Santa Ana, CA: Fine Arts Press, 1933. Santa Ana, CA:: Fine Arts Press, 1933., 1933. Folio. 247, [3] pp. Color frontispiece, illustrations. Brown cloth-backed gilt-stamped boards, gilt-stamped paper spine label; corner bumped. Ownership blind stamp of G. S. A. [Mrs. G. S. Achilles], Fountain Oaks, Morgan Hill, California; some minor stains to title page, occasional pencil marginalia, else very good. Limited edition of 500 copies. Colored plates from original design cut in linoleum by Jean Goodwin, and printed in oil paints. The book itself was planned and published by Thomas E. Williams, director of the Fine Arts Press in Santa Ana. The book is early ethnography of the Takic-speaking Mission Indians of coastal Southern California. The titular Chinigchinich, also known as Quaoar, is a character from Takic mythology, variously described as a creator deity, demigod, or hero, who became associated with the figure of Christ after the Takic peoples were converted. Boscana's account is one of the few reliable sources regarding the religious and cultural practices of the Mission Indians, as their forcible relocation to 15 Franciscan ministries in the early 19th century resulted in the loss of much of the oral histories and traditional practices of the tribes.

TARSKI, ALFRED. - [FOUNDING MODERN LOGICAL SEMANTICS]
Warszawa, 1933. Small 4to. Orig. printed wrappers, sunned at the edges, but otherwise near mint condition, also internally. An excellent copy. VII, (1), 116, (1, - errata) pp. ¶ The exceedingly scarce first printing of Tarski's most important and influential work, "The Concept of Truth in Formalized Languages", which founded modern logical semantics. The work appeared in an extremely small number, in Polish, and many copies of the article have later been destroyed, thus, the work is of the utmost scarcity. In this seminal article the Polish-American logician and mathematician Alfred Tarski devotes himself to "the definition of truth". "Its task is to construct -with reference to a given language- a materially adequate and formally correct definition of the term "true sentence"." (Introduction, English translation, 1956). With this work the face of logic was changed forever. The "Concept of Truth" constitutes a landmark event in 20th century analytic philosophy, and it ranks as one of the most important contributions to symbolic logic, semantics and philosophy of language. In this work Tarski develops the semantic theory of truth for formal languages and determines the fact that no language can contain its own truth predicate. Tarski thus concluded that the semantic theory could not be applied to any natural language. -This was later used by e.g. Davidson to construct his truth-conditional semantics, and the problems solved by Tarski are some of the same that Russell and Whitehead struggled to solve in their "Principia Mathematica".Tarski (1901-1983) has contributed seminally … [Click Below for Full Description]

Winston Churchill
“It is indeed a timely and pungent warning… I made several speeches on the subject of German expenditure on rearmament” An unpublished letter of Churchill on the subject that brought him to power Among the public men of influence, only Churchill recognized the profound peril to the world that the Nazis and Fascists represented. He spoke out in Parliament, on the radio, in his newspaper columns, anywhere and everywhere, demanding the government wake up and prepare. As early as 1933, Churchill warned in the House of Commons, “Those Germans are not looking for equal status. They are looking for weapons.” He soon gathered around him a band of like-minded supporters who saw the menace and the potentially fatal nature of the threat. But these men were a small minority, and none of them were in the upper reaches of government. The men who were, the prime ministers and party leaders, not only disagreed with Churchill but considered him a loose cannon and an annoyance. In 1934, in scenes reminiscent of the best spy dramas, Churchill held clandestine meetings at Chartwell, where he was briefed on the actual situation in Germany by the government and military men in his network, men in positions low enough to be without policy-making influence but high enough to know the true facts and statistics being developed (and be in despair at the lack of response from the government). With this information, Churchill shocked Parliament by revealing the true figures of German military production, figures many colleagues refused to believe. In November of 1934, he made a stirring … [Click Below for Full Description]

Winston Churchill
Winston Churchill, Seeing Britain Squandering American Goodwill, Writes: “I feel sure that what has happened has done no end of harm…I am very anxious about the future.” Martin Gilbert quoted this letter in his book, “Churchill and America” The retained copy of the report is still present, and is the only written report to Churchill from his network of supporters during the Wilderness Years that we can recall seeing on the market Among the public men of influence, only Churchill recognized the profound peril to the world that the Nazis and Fascists represented. Neville Chamberlain showed the attitude when he later wrote, "The real danger to this country is Winston. He is the warmonger, not Hitler." In 1934, in scenes reminiscent of the best spy dramas, Churchill held clandestine meetings at Chartwell, where he was briefed on the actual situation in Germany by the government and military men in his network, men in positio … [Click Below for Full Description]

FLOWERS]
1933. [FLOWERS]. KANJI SHÔHIN GASHÛ {Kyoto, MARIA Gabo, Showa 8 [1933]} 29.5 x 41.6 cm., 15 oblong color woodblock prints of flowers, many in fan format. Maria Gabo was a very skillful woodblock printing house in the 1930s. Their aesthetic sense differs from others of the period, the pallette is subtler, the printing more "boneless" - overall a more painterly effect is achieved in this group of prints by two of the most celebrated Kyoto artists of the day, Kobayashi Kanji (1892-1974) and Matsumura Suiho. Here, MARIA has created prints embellished with all the effects of a deluxe production, bokashi, mica, overprinting, etc., etc. The original ribbon-bound boards with printed papertitle label are worn, the prints themselves are very good. Very unusual collection, MARIA Gabo productions have almost always been broken up for the prints. Complete.
