Reinhardt, Max, Schauspieler und Regisseur (1873-1943)
Paris, 19. X, 1933. 3? SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt (Brief) sowie 2 SS. (Briefkarte). 8vo und qu.-12mo. Mit eh. adr. Kuvert. [Click Below for Full Description]

CHRISTIE, [Dame] Agatha (1890-1976).
London: Odhams Press Limited, 1933. [Strange Tales] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.247; [5], blank. Publisher's plum-coloured cloth with titles in gilt to spine, in suitable macabre wrapper. Some edge spotting, fugitive pigment of cloth with inevitable sunning to extremities, gilt dulled, jacket with a couple of small chips at crown and a few creases to rear. An attractive copy. A collection of twelve short stories, mostly tales of fate and the supernatural, published by Odhams rather than her usual publisher Collins, who produced their own version a little later. The book is notable for including the first appearance of Christie's legendary story 'The Witness for the Prosecution' which the author subsequently adapted for the stage, and which was the basis for two classic movies. Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [247]. Cooper and Pike; Detective Fiction p.82-89, Eric Quayle; Detective Fiction, see also Wagstaff and Poole.

Jansky, Karl G.
FIRST SEPARATE EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF THE BEGINNING OF RADIO ASTRONOMY: JANSKY'S 1933 "REVOLUTIONARY CLAIM THAT THE HISS STATIC [he found in 1932] SEEMED TO HAVE ITS ORIGIN IN OUR MILKY WAY GALAXY..." accompanied by his 1935 confirmation (American National Biography). "At the age of just 26, Karl Jansky had become the first person to detect and identify radio waves coming from outer space, a truly historic discovery... The true significance of Jansky's breakthrough surpasses even the momentous discovery that the Milky Way emits radio waves. His accomplishment was to establish the science of radio astronomy and to demonstrate that astronomers could learn a huge amount about the universe by looking beyond the narrow band of electromagnetic wavelengths that are visible to the human eye" (Singh, The Big Bang, 405). Both papers appeared as part of the Bell Telephone System Technical Publication Monograph Series, published simultaneously with their journal appearances in Proceedings of the Institute of Radio Engineers. Though not technically offprints, they remain the first separate publication typically prized by collectors. While at Bell, Jansky began to investigate atmospheric static affecting long-distance radio communications. To determine radio wave direction, he famously designed a large 'linear directional antenna' then mounted it, and why not, on the wheels of a Model T. Though thunderstorms, etc. produce a static radio noise Jansky was searched for quieter periods and wavelength windows that might improve and optimize transatlantic radio communications. But it was working as a migrant worker that Mourning Dove earned her livelihood as an adult. By day, she earned a meager living picking fruits and vegetables, and at night, she wrote in her camp-tent, experiencing years of poverty and physical hardship. In 1914 she met Lucullus V. McWhorter, an archaeologist and Indian rights advocate, and he encouraged her to write and publish, collaborating with her on writing projects, including her 1916 novel CO-GE-WE-A, the first novel published by a Native American woman. Thurgood Marshall]
Washington, D.C. Howard University Press [1933]. 11 x 7¼ inches. [8]pp., stapled printed and self-titled wrappers. Commencement Program. Light tanning; a number of leaves with very short closed tears or tiny chips; else near fine. For Baltimore-native Thurgood Marshall (1908-1993), the first African-American to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States, the nascence of his storied law career begins with his graduation from Howard University. First in his class, cum laude, Marshall was graduated on Friday June 9th, 1933. This Commencement program serves as a rare artifact, a testament to the beginning achievements of a Justice who broke the color barrier, who was patri- and matrilineally descended from slaves, and whose father was a railroad porter, his mother, a school teacher. Marshall's interest in law was instilled in him by his father who taught Thurgood how to argue and to master logic. In Baltimore, Thurgood attended Frederick Douglass High School. He then attended Lincoln University where his behavior was less-than exemplary, amongst fellow classmates Cab Calloway and Langston Hughes. At Lincoln, Marshall graduated cum laude with a B.A. in American literature and philosophy. He then set his sights, in earnest, on becoming a lawyer and applied, and was accepted, to Howard University. After his graduation, in 1933, Marshall returned to Baltimore where he started his private law practice and began his committed efforts to promote and strengthen the goals of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Only three years after his graduatio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Combined shipping is always no extra charge. "Lewis Carroll" (Charles L[utwidge] Dodgson). ALICE IN WONDERLAND. London & Glasgow: Collins, (n. d. but 1933). First U. K. Photoplay edition (9" by 7") issued in tandem with the 1933 Paramount film adaptation starring Charlotte Henry as Alice and co-starring Cary Grant, W. C. Fields, and Gary Cooper among others. This is a Very Good example, designed with wonderful Art Deco elements to it, with hardly any wear to the fragile oatmeal-buckram cloth covers as well as the spine, small previous owner's signature in ink, there are eight b&w full-page still photos from the film along with numerous charming line drawings of the Alice characters by Irene Mountfort. The Very Good ORIGINAL DUST JACKET partially incorporates photographic images from the film including that of Charlotte Henry with the Dodo. The DJ is flap-clipped but not price-clipped. Perhaps best of all, the dust jacket is 100% complete although there is some soil and a long closed tear to the white back panel, and overall edge-wear in general. Despite faults, the exceedingly rare DJ shows very well indeed. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

FISHER, IRVING. - [FISHER'S 'DEBT DEFLATION THEORY']
[Menasha, Wisconsin], The Econometric Society, 1933. Royal8vo. In a contemporary black half calf binding with gilt lettering to spine. In "Econometrica", Vol. 1, 1933. Entire volume offered. Light wear to extremities and small stamp to title-page. A fine copy. Pp. 339-357. [Entire volume: (4), 448 pp.]. First edition of Fisher's seminal work in which he introduced the concept of 'Debt deflation': a theory of economic cycles that holds that recessions and depressions are due to the overall level of debt shrinking (deflating): the credit cycle is the cause of the economic cycle. The theory was developed by Irving Fisher following the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression. The debt deflation theory was familiar to John Maynard Keynes prior to Fisher's discussion of it, but he found it lacking in comparison to what would become his theory of liquidity preference. The theory, however, has enjoyed a resurgence of interest since the 1980s, both in mainstream economics and in the heterodox school of post-Keynesian economics, and has subsequently been developed by such post-Keynesian economists as Hyman Minsky and Steve Keen and by the mainstream economist Ben Bernanke. "During the Great Depression, observing the catastrophes of the world around him, which he shared personally, Fisher came to quite a different theory of the business cycle from the simple monetarist version he had espoused earlier. This was his 'Debt-deflation theory of depression', summarized in the first volume of Econometrica, the organ of the international society he helped to found. Brassai's acclaimed masterpiece and a celebrated Roth 101 title (one of the 101 greatest photography books of all time). Paris: Arts & Metiers Graphiques, 1933. Measuring approximately 10 X 8 inches, the book is wire spiral bound in photographically illustrated wrappers. The spirals are all straight and serviceable, and none are bent. 1933. Book is in overall good but worn condition. Front hinge cracked, spine worn, old bookstore price written in pencil. Signed by W. E. B. DuBois as a gift to Prime Minister Lowell George. Truly a unique book. W. E. B. DuBois had been in correspondence with Honorable Lloyd George (England's Prime Minister from 1916 to 1922) at least as early as 1929 (see University of Massachusetts Amherst papers for reference). The book is Rolling Stone by Lowell Thomas, an account of the travels of Welshman Arthur Radclyffe Dugmore, a contemporary of the Welsh-born Prime Minister, which may explain it as DuBois' choice of gift. DuBois signatures are exceedingly scarce; when considering the inscription to Lloyd George, this would likely be the best DuBois signature on the market. [Attributes: First Edition]
