Harper & Brothers. Orwell, George (pseud. of Eric Blair). DOWN AND OUT IN PARIS AND LONDON. New York: Harper and Brothers, 1933. First American Edition. First Printing. Octavo (21.5cm); light purple cloth, with plum-colored stripes and titles stamped in black on spine; illustrated endpapers; dustjacket; 292pp. Hint of a forward lean, with faint foxing to text edges; clean throughout - Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped, sunned at spine and extremities, with edgewear, short tears, and chips to crown and corners; 3 inch tear along front flap fold, discreetly and archivally mended in two spots on verso; Very Good. Young Eric Blair's first book, a work he was sufficiently ashamed of that he asked Victor Gollancz to issue it under a pseudonym. The American edition was published about 6 months following the British, issued in a tiny print run of 1,750 copies, of which 383 were remaindered. The book sold poorly in the U.S., perhaps owing to the fact American audiences in the midst of the Depression did not want a reminder of life on the down-and-out. Rare in the dustjacket, seldom appearing in presentable condition in the trade and offered less than a handful of times in 30 years according to the auction record, those being restored with tape residue on verso. An important debut. Fenwick A.1d. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Prague: Lev fronta, 1933. Prague: Levá fronta, 1933. Octavos (22.2 × 14.5 cm). Original staple-stitched printed wrappers; 16-32 pp. each (consecutive pagination). Two issues with small nicks to wrappers; occasional underlining; overall about very good issues. Significant run of this scarce Czech leftist journal of art, literature, and politics, associated with the eponymous group. Levá fronta, or the Left Front, was founded in 1929, and replaced the avant-garde group Devětsil, which was based around such key figures as Karel Teige, Jaroslav Seifert and Adolf Hoffmeister. Under Teige, the group had increasingly shifted from its allegiance to West European influences toward a greater orientation on Moscow and the Russian avant-garde, leading to discord. With the "Left Front," core members of Devětsil, as well as more outspoken communist critics, sought to create a new print organ to explicitly propagate socialist culture and to unite the intelligentsia with the working class in its creative efforts. Among its members were Teige, Stanislav Kostka Neumann, Bedřich Václavek, Julius Fučík, Ivan Sekanina, Gertruda Sekaninová, Ladislav Štoll, Vladislav Vančura, the architects Karel Honzík and Jiří Kroha, Lubomír Linhart, and others. In addition to publishing this journal, the group published a series of brochures on communist and pro-Soviet matters, the Knihovna levé fronty, or "Left front library," which covered economics, history, politics, and culture. It also organized many events and public discussions, eventually creating branches in other Czechoslovak cities and subdividin … [Click Below for Full Description]

WHITAKER, Alma
New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1933. First Edition. First Printing of this scarce cocktail manual, with chapters describing manners and behavior around drinking, as well as chapter descriptions of cocktails, whisky, gin, brandy, Champagne, beer, etc. 8vo (206 x 136mm): [8],140pp. Publisher's art-deco style salmon-pink and glossy blue pictorial boards, fore-edge rough-cut, top edge stained pink, matching pink end papers. Laid in is a charming bookmark ("Nice girls don't swear") cut in the silhouette of a primly dressed debutante. Virtually pristine example (apparently unread), tightly bound, clean and bright throughout, with no visible flaws. Gabler G41270. Whitaker was the Liz Smith of her day (though she may have demurred), a Los Angeles Times gossip columnist with entrée into Holywood society. This witty guide (Whitaker scorns the home bar,"one of the most deplorable customs that won favor during the Prohibition") was was written to reintroduce post-Prohibition Americans to the "lost art of polite drinking" and send them down the "path of righteous alcoholic etiquette." Sounds awfully stuffy, but it sparkles with fascinating facts and even rewards with pearls of wisdom. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. (Fine Editions Ltd is a member of the Independent Online Booksellers Association, and we subscribe to its codes of ethics.). Fine.

Whitaker, Alma Fullford
Frederick A. Stokes Co, 1933-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good /no jacket . Hardcover, First Edition, 1933, Frederick E. Stokes Company, 140 pages. Very Good - illustrated in art deco style with boards of matte pink cloth and glossy blue embellishment which matches the blue titles. No DJ. Very Good, modestly soiled boards with just a touch of shelf/edge wear. Bottom corners are bumped and spine is slightly faded. The final ten pages were unlucky enough to have been improperly separated by prior owner resulting in a few chips - but the text is not affected. Pages are clean with just a hint of edge-toning. Rear inside cover has the bookstore stamp of the famous and sadly long gone Hudsons Book Store which was a part of the Hudsons Department Store of Detroit, Michigan. The author was a popular Los Angeles Times columnist covering Hollywood Society. Combining wit with wisdom she gently educates post -Prohibition Americans (hosts and guests alike) regarding civilized drinking etiquette. Among her rules for drinking are: 1) Never get drunk; 2) Above all -never get drunk at someone else’s expense; 9) If the waiter fails to refill your glass, accept his superior judgment on your behalf. She includes discussions of how, when and why to serve civilized people with: Cocktails, Gin, Liqueurs, Rum, Beer, Whiskey, Brandy, Wines, Champagne, Punches and Cups. Rounding things out are a few tips for successful buffets and recipes for beverages and canapés. Handsome vintage copy. LOC SSS-FB-03

H.G. Wells]
T.B., England, 1933. SIGNED by H. G. Wells, an original pencil sketch of Wells on an off-white 5 x 7 card, SIGNED below in fountain pen by the Author with a flourish. Matted and framed to an overall size of 10" x 12." An attractive and accurate pencil portrait of the famed author in his prime presumably by an admirer that has been SIGNED by H.G. Wells. Slight surface scuffing above the signature (possibly from a removed inscription). We have been unable to identify "T.B." Accompanied by a PSA/DNA Certificate of Authenticity. Herbert George "H.G." Wells (1866-1946) was a profound English writer. He was prolific in many genres, including the novel, history, politics, social commentary, textbooks, and even rules for war games. Wells is often best remembered for his science fiction novels and is called a "father of science fiction," along with Jules Verne and Hugo Gernsback. His most notable science fiction works include The Time Machine (1895), The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898). He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times. Wells's earliest specialised training was in biology. He was excellent at drawing and began to draw pictures and diagrams at an early age--hence probably his pleasure at signing this highly detailed portrait sketch by one of his many admirers. Wells also loved to annotate some of his books with what he called "Picshuas": little cartoonish sketches that he sometimes drew. His thinking on scientific and ethical matters took place in a profoundly (social) Darwinian context. He was al … [Click Below for Full Description]

Theaters and figures discussed include: Moscow Arts Theatre, Vaktangov, Meyerhold, and the Revolutionary theatre in Moscow, National Academy Theatre and the Children's theatre in Lenningrad, among many others. Also covered are Russian ballet and Opera. Famous productions featured include Gorky's "The Lower Depths","The Death of Ivan the Terrible" by Tolstoy, "Princess Turandot" by Pucini, "Hamlet", and "The Revolution of 1905", among others. The fourth chapter deals with Soviet cinema, and includes Sonoike's observations about his meeting with filmmaker Vsevolod Pudovkin, experiences going to the movie theater and visiting the Moscow film school. Wasmuths Monatchefte
RARE Wasmuths Monatshefte Fur Baukunst Unc Stadtebau 1933 Jahrgang Berlin. A Very Rare Early 20th Century Architecture with Contributions in text and Illustrated by all major German & Foreign Architects. Very Rare Book! The modernist movement was alive and well in interwar Germany. Not only at the Bauhaus, which stood at the forefront of the avant-garde, under the leadership of Walter Gropius, Hannes Meyer, and Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, but all over the country. László Moholy-Nagy and Gropius published their famous Bauhausbücher series, El Lissitzky established his journal ABC: Beitrage zum Bauen, and Theo van Doesburg transplanted his Dutch De Stijl magazine to Germany. Wasmuths Monatshefte für Baukunst und Städtebau was something of a mixed bag, presenting traditional architectural buildings alongside some of the more avant-garde productions. Modernism, as a self-consciously international movement proposing a new universal language for architecture, sought to transcend national borders and keep their domestic audiences informed of developments abroad. Современная архитектураwrote extensively on the Bauhaus architects and Le Corbusier. In turn, Wasmuths Monatshefte für Baukunst und Städtebau included articles covering the architecture that was emerging in the Soviet Union. With the rise of Nazism, combined with the pre-existing socialist/communist sympathies amongst German avant-garde architects, German and Dutch architects flocked to the Soviet Union to help aid in the construction of a new society. As Hannes Meyer (the Bauhaus director forced out for his communist belief … [Click Below for Full Description]

Werfel, Franz, Schriftsteller (1890-1945)
3 SS. auf 3 Bll. Gr.-8vo. Drei Seiten aus seiner Rede "Können wir ohne Gottesglauben leben", die Werfel am 5. März 1932 in Wien gehalten hatte. [Click Below for Full Description]

Hamma, Fridolin.
First edition of this important treatise on Italian violins and their makers. The author (1881-1969) was himself an accomplished luthier, and the son of the founder of the famed instrument-making firm Hamma & Co. His scholarship is here illustrated with numerous photographic reproductions of violins, representing the masterworks of many eminent Italian artists; a few of these violin images are printed in color, and at the back of the volume are => nine double-spread plates providing life-sized diagrams with measurements of instrument exemplars. This is => hand-numbered copy 518 of 1200 printed, this particular copy having outstanding provenance (see below). The publisher's prospectus -- with sample illustrations -- is also laid in. Provenance: From the library of the great violinist and conductor Adolf Busch -- owner of a Stradivarius violin made in 1716 -- and by bequest to his daughter Irene Serkin and son-in-law, musician Rudolph Serkin. Half-title with author's signed presentation inscription to Fritz Baumgartner, who was, alongside Hamma, a co-founder of EILA, the International Association of Violin and Bow Makers (and who also owned a Stradivarius); half-title with another inked inscription signed by Busch recording gift of this volume "von Frau Baumgartner" in 1937, and with inked ownership inscription of Irene Serkin-Busch. Laid-in three-page manuscript letter dated 1937, addressed "Sehr verehrter Herr Professor" and signed by Frau Baumgartner. Herr Baumgartner and Busch had a noteworthy (so to speak) connection; the latter commissioned both a custom viola a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kern Udo "Whip" Whipple
[Evansville, Indiana], 1933. Various. Very good. The pen and ink drawings range in size from approximately 1" x 2" to about 8" x 10". Five of the pocket diaries measure 2.75" x 5.5"; one measures 2.75" x 4". Each contains short ink entries for every day of the week. Whipple was a resident of Evansville, Indiana who worked at the Bucyrus-Erie plant which made industrial steam shovels, bulldozer blades, and mining draglines. He began working there as a laborer in his teens and eventually rose to become an arc welder after spending several years as a riveter. Some of Whipple's drawings are political cartoons addressing topics of the day (the Sino-Japanese War and Prohibition). One is a National Recovery Act (NRA) sign. Five are self-portrait cartoons. Other themes include Christmas, the West, and Jesus. The remainder are portrait and figure studies. Whipple's diary entries are concise and provide details about his daily life. Each also addresses his work, and they change drastically as the Depression takes hold. In 1928 and 1929 when business was booming, Whipple worked five or six days each week. In 1930, he notes that although he "Got a good raise [business] was not so good." By 1931, he remarks that work had diminished and he had begun to juggle bills. Things worsened further in 1932 when he was "off" more days than he worked, and one month "the shop" paid his rent. He was finally laid off during the summer of 1933 and spent the next five months doing odd jobs and hunting for work until he was hired by the Sterling Brewery in December.
