        To A God Unknown

Robert O. Ballou, New York 1933 - Signed and extensively inscribed by the author on an accompanying postcard. 1st edition, 1st printing book, in a 1st issue dustjacket with $2.00 price intact on lower front flap. Only 598 copies were printed by Ballou in 1933 and the book didn't have another printing till it was reprinted in1935 by Covici Friede and Heinemann in the U.K. Fine, tight and unread book with no previous owner markings, no soiling, clean page edges and the black upper page edges are very evenly dark and unspotted. There's just a tiny bit of softening to the binding cloth at spine ends, a tiny rectangular shadow to the cloth at the spine front-side lower edge and just a hint of bumping to upper binding corners to keep it from being As New. It is bound in light green cloth with still bright gilt lettering on the spine. The dustjacket is also Fine with one tiny edge nick lower front-side spine end professionally repaired internally, slight toning to the spine lettering but no fading or toning of other spine colors, and a tiny area of surface wrinkling lower front panel that you can only see when held to the light at an angle. Truly beautiful with no tears, chips or fading. The book comes with a postcard written by Steinbeck in 1952, very clear writing/signature and quite a lengthy inscription to a young woman who was collecting author signatures and involved in 4H activities. She had written Steinbeck about trying to win a trophy and he quotes her his favorite motto in both Spanish and English of 'If you don't want to fly beware of wings' and talks to her of 'food became more important than fame' and that he'd tried once to sell his trophy. The postcard was sent from Steinbeck's New York City 72nd St. address and has 'Steinbeck' as part of the printed sender's address. It is in Near Fine condition - a few tiny age-toned areas, one corner tip that had been turned down at some point (no material loss), a tiny pin prick upper middle edge, and a tiny crimp (no material loss) to the lower edge. The postcard is safeguarded now in an archival heavy-duty (16 gauge, so stiff enough not to need a backing board) removable clear holder that lets you see both sides of the card while in the holder. Also included is a custom clamshell case, bronze spine label, with a patterned-design outside cloth covering complementing the book's dustjacket and a fully lined ivory-colored soft flannel interior. The card in its holder is housed in an ivory-colored soft flannel flapped-closure pocket built onto the inside of the upper lid of the case, with the ivory flannel just a bit age-darkened. The book's dustjacket is in a removable, clear mylar dustjacket protecter. Truly rare examples of both Steinbeck's writing and of Steinbeck's 3rd book which is his most scarce book to find in collector condition. ; 7-5/8" x 5"; 325 pages; Signed by Author [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Warum Krieg? [Why War?]

Internationales Institut Fur Geistige Zusammenarbeit Volkerbund, Paris 1933 - (FREUD-EINSTEIN) Warum Krieg? [Why War?] Albert Einstein und Sigmund Freud. Paris: Internationales Institut Fur Geistige Zusammenarbeit Volkerbund, 1933. 62pp. original printed wrappers. Slight tanning toward page edges; wrappers darkened at spine and edges, with light wear to extremities. Very Good Condition.FIRST EDITION limited to 2000 printed copies. In 1932, Albert Einstein, invited by the League of Nations to address a letter on any subject to any individual, chose to correspond with Sigmund Freud on the possibilities of avoiding war. Einstein maintained the importance of establishing an independent judiciary body to mediate conflicts. Freud agreed with this idea but also insisted " that there is no likelihood of our being able to suppress humanity’s aggressive tendencies," and that war is the ultimate expression of man’s distaste for the restraints of civilization.By the time of publication, Hitler had risen to power and the world moved closer each day toward a global conflict. Einstein, the committed pacifist, had resigned from the League of Nations over its inability to confront Nazi militarism. In October of 1933 he began his tenure at the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton, New Jersey. Why War? was translated into multiple languages but this is the true First Edition.         Marlborough, His Life and Times.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933–8 - 6 volumes octavo (224 × 150 mm). Contemporary red morocco presentation binding by Bumpus, title gilt direct to the spine, flat bands with dotted rule with fleurons, single fillet panels to the compartments and to the boards, large gilt central tool of the Marlborough arms to the upper boards, single fillet edge-roll, all edges gilt, double rules to the turn-ins. Some corners slightly bumped, pale tan-burn from the turn-ins, but overall an extremely handsomely presented set. First American editions, same years as the first British. Presentation set, inscribed in first volume on the binder's blank; "To Louis Sterling from Winston S. Churchill 1947," and signed in the same place in each of the subsequent five volumes. Sir Louis Sterling (1879-1958) was a New York-born industrialist, and a pioneer in the phonographic and music industry. He was one of the original directors of EMI, a leading philanthropist, and, especially during the 1930s, a tireless worker in the effort to provide asylum for Jewish refugees. In Sterling's obituary in The Gramophone, Compton Mackenzie remarked that: "Few men have been as well loved as Louis Sterling and one may speculate whether any businessman has ever been as much loved as that most remarkable little man " Sterling was a noted book and art collector. A superb set in contemporary binding, and an appealing association. Cohen A97.4(I).a - (VI).a, volume V is A97.4(V).b, the "second state," distinguished by the insertion of an errata slip at p.19; Woods A40(b) [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The River War (An Historical Account of the Reconquest of the Sudan)

Eyre & Spottiswoode, London, 1933 - Copyright page identifies this as ?first cheap edition?, but actually it is the second, as there was also a really cheap little edition in 1915. A desirable edition, and the best to read other than a first. This edition uses the setting of the 1902 edition so is abridged. There are 22 maps, many folding and some in two colours. Bound in lilac cloth, blocked in black on the spine only. 381 pages, index, appendices. This edition adds a new introduction from Churchill. Book is very clean and tight, page edges white and even, owner name on endpaper. Dustwrapper has good unfaded blue letters on spine, worn with cracks and tears, and a piece gone about 35 x 25 mm along top edge of rear cover. (ICS A2da) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Presenting Lily Mars

Doubleday Doran, Garden City 1933 - First edition. A small stain on the copyright page (and the facing dedication page), a little smudging to the boards, a near fine copy in a partially price-clipped, very good plus dustwrapper with a small chip at the crown and light edgewear. Nicely Inscribed by the author to his close friend, and occasional co-author, Harry Leon Wilson: "For H.L., who may be reminded of something or somebody, here and there --- N.B.T. Aug. 26, 1933. Kennebunkport." Interestingly, Tarkington signs using his true first initial "N" for his real first name "Newton," which he seldom did -- perhaps he did so as a lighthearted jab at Wilson, who often went by the name "H. Leon Wilson." The novel was bought by MGM as a dramatic vehicle for Lana Turner, but the script turned out to be too lighthearted and Norman Taurog's 1943 film version was instead a musical, showcasing Judy Garland as the small-town girl who impresses Broadway producer Van Heflin. A great association copy: Tarkington and Wilson collaborated on a number of plays early in their careers, several of which were filmed, probably most notably, *The Man From Home* in 1914 (and re-filmed again in 1922), one of the earliest feature films directed by Cecil B. De Mille. Another collaboration was *Cameo Kirby*, filmed first in 1914, but most notably by John Ford in 1923 with John Gilbert, Alan Hale, and Jean Arthur. Wilson, who was married to Rose O'Neill (creator of the Kewpie Doll), wrote several other books that were filmed, including *Merton of the Movies, Ruggles of Red Gap*, and *Bunker Bean*. Over sixty films were made from Tarkington's works, including *The Magnificent Ambersons.* See this book in 3D on our site. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Gregynog Press, Newtown, Wales 1933 - 264 x 171 mm (10 3/8 x 6 3/4"). 33 pp., [1] leaf (colophon). No. 172 OF 235 COPIES (of a total of 250, including 15 bound in morocco). Publisher's reddish-brown Hermitage calf, upper cover blocked in blind with titling, press device, and the figure of Euphrosyne, one of the Three Graces, designed by Blair Hughes-Stanton. WITH 11 WOOD ENGRAVINGS BY BLAIR HUGHES-STANTON, four of these full-page. Printed on Japanese vellum. Harrop 26. A hint of rubbing to leather, one tiny spot on spine, otherwise A VERY FINE COPY, immaculate internally. During a short space of time, from 1931-34, Blair Hughes-Stanton (1902-81) produced woodcuts for six memorable books issued by the Gregynog Press, and this collection of four early poems by Milton was, in Harrop's view, "merely a vehicle for displaying the illustrations," which feature figures from classical mythology depicted in the artist's distinctive erotic style. Hughes-Stanton (1902-81) studied at the school of Leon Underwood at Hammersmith and had a long and productive career producing sophisticated expressive woodcuts as an avant-garde artist. Although he was pressured to make his striking, sometimes even savage, images look more like those of Eric Gill, he resisted and successfully established his unique personal style as an illustrator. The type use here is the graceful Perpetua designed by Gill, who was, with Hughes-Stanton, one of the two central figures in the English wood engraving revival. Although Gill is the more recognized artist, he never approached Hughes-Stanton in terms of intricacy. While prone to abrasions, the "Four Poems" binding is described by Harrop as "one of the most sucessful to come from the Press.".         HOLD YOUR MAN (1933)

MGM 1933 - Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 35 cm.) lobby card, USA. Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, dir: Sam Wood; MGM. Pre-Code sizzler written by Anita Loos specifically to high light the dramatic abilities of Jean Harlow. Though she is toned down from her previous work in RED DUST and RED HEADED WOMAN, she engages in some of the most sexually charged scenes of the time with Clark Gable, including a scene where they share the same bath water, walk around in their robes and share a torrid kiss within minutes of having met each other. He is a small time con, she falls in love with him, they have a baby (born in prison) and she goes to prison for his botched crime. Things do work out in the end of course! This was the third pairing for Gable and Harlow and they would go on to make two more films together. In this card, Harlow (swathed in Adrian finery despite her lower bracket income) visits Gable during his prison stint. Pinholes in corners, FINE.
