"Ephrussi coupled his embryological concerns with a firm conviction that one must understand the role of genes in order to decipher embryological processes. He moved to Caltech in 1934 and stayed until 1935 to learn genetics within the intellectual empire of T.H. Morgan. This move was supported by the Rockefeller Foundation. During this period he conducted important work with George Beadle, who joined him in Paris in the autumn of 1935. There they produced results from experiments with Drosophila eye transplants. This became integral to the work of Beadle and Tatum, who were working with Neurospora, and from this research developed the 'one gene, one enzyme' hypothesis." Wikipedia. "George Wells Beadle (October 22, 1903 - June 9, 1989) was an American scientist in the field of genetics, and Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine Nobel laureate who with Edward Lawrie Tatum discovered the role of genes in regulating biochemical events within cells in 1958." Principes de L'Economie Politique et de L'Impot

34 - Paris - Alfred Costes, 1933. 34 - Paris - Alfred Costes, 1933 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. David Ricardo's influential work on classical economics. First edition. In French. Complete in two volumes. David Ricardo (18 April 1772 11 September 1823) was an English political economist, often credited with systematising economics, and was one of the most influential of the classical economists, along with Thomas Malthus, Adam Smith, and John Stuart Mill. The book concludes that land rent grows as population increases. It also clearly lays out the theory of comparative advantage, which shows that all nations can benefit from free trade, even if a nation lacks an absolute advantage in all sectors of its economy. Ricardo claims in the preface that Turgot, Stuart, Adam Smith, Jean-Baptiste Say, Sismondi, and others had not written enough satisfactory information on the topics of rent, profit, and wages. Principles of Political Economy is ostensibly Ricardo's effort to fill that gap in the literature. Portrait of the author to frontispiece of volume I. Condition: In a quarter roan binding with marbled paper covered boards and original paper wraps bound in. Externally, sound with slight shelfwear. Sunning andinstitutional labelsto spines. Blind stamping to front boards of the Bibliotheque des Avocates and slight cracking to two joints. Internally, firmly bound. Marginal age-toning throughout, as is often the case with French books. Two ink stamps to the half title and title page of both volumes. Ink inscription to both half titles. Generally clean throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD.

She also helped to publish the poetry of Wilfred Owen after his death. Her only novel, I Live under a Black Sun, based on the life of Jonathan Swift, was published in 1937. Published by independent British Publisher Duckworth, founded in 1898 by Gerald Duckworth. As a naturalistic writer, he was amongst the first English-language authors to absorb the lessons of the French realists, and was particularly influenced by the works of mile Zola. OJO IN OZ

Chicago: Reilly & Lee Co., 1933. Chicago: Reilly & Lee Co., 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. VERY GOOD PLUS in Chipped Dustjacket. John R. Neill. NOTE COMMENTS BELOW. BOOK ITSELF: 4to (Quarto) measuring 9 1/4" x 7". Cloth boards ("B" Binding Variant, with Non-Bold Semi-Script Reilly & Lee at base of spine) of deep, brick-red with BRIGHT paste-on illustration to front board, which matches dustjacket image. Round 1/2" depression dimple to spine, two inches from bottom. Very light rubbing to extremities. : Edgewear to chipped dustjacket with three approximately 1" x 2" chips missing from lower right corner of front panel, spine, and top edge of rear panel. Still-bright, solidly-bound OZ volume in a chipped-but-intact dustjacket that has faithfully done its assigned task of protecting this beautiful classic. Founded on & continuing the famous OZ stories by L. Frank Baum., OJO IN OZ tells what happened when a band of Gypsies came to The Emerald City expressly to kidnap a boy named Ojo and deliver him for a price to a magician named Mooj who lives on Moojer Mountain. It is Snufferbux, the dancing bear, who befriends Ojo and stays faithfully by him for all his adventures... Meanwhile Dorothy, The Cowardly Lion and The Patchwork Girl set out from Ozma's court to rescue the captive Ojo, but soon find themselves in need of rescue themselves, Ojo and Snufflebux are literally blown into the company of a colorful and mysterious bandit who goes by the name of Realbad, as well as X-Pando The Flexible Man, and a series of nearly unbelievable adventures and escapades ensues.& & Black and white decorated endpapers. 12 full-color inserts (including frontis) by John R. Neill.& & NOTE (paraphrased from Paul Bienvenue and Robert E. Schmidt's definitive reference work on Oziana entitled: THE BOOK COLLECTOR'S GUIDE TO L. FRANK BAUM & OZ, March Hare Books, January 2009): & & "First printing (text and plates) in a secondary binding (Binding B). Dust jacket, unclipped, with intact price of "Net $1.50) and which on rear flap lists titles through Book #29 CAPTAIN SALT OF OZ), dates from a slightly later time, but since dust jacket is a separate component from - and independent of - the text sheets, and the sheets are the fundamental unit that determines priority, the later jacket does not affect the priority of the book itself. The publisher didn't always bind up all the first printing text sheets at one time; in the event that sales were slow (as they were during the Depression), the publisher might instead bind up sets of sheets on an as-needed basis. This also allowed them to print new dust jackets with updated ads. For Ojo, this was clearly the case.& & Quite rare in jacket.

The Farmer's Year A Calendar of English Husbandry

48 Pall Mall. London: Collins, 1933 In its original faded green cloth, titles in gilt, corners and edges lightly faded, bumped and worn. Spine, faded, titles in gilt, some spotting, edges bumped and worn. Internally, green pictorial endpapers, no inscriptions, half title, [6], [2], 3-54 pp, [1], 12 full page wood engravings, 8 vignettes, 12 initial letters, printed by Collins' Clear-Type Press London and Glasgow, oblong 36*28.5 cm, very occasional light spotting. A nice copy with superb illustrations. Leighton, Clara Ellaline Hope [Clare], engraver, was convinced that wood-engraving was an art for the masses rather than for an élite, she Clare Leighton worked independently of the private presses. Her popular success was founded on a disciplined technique, powerful compositions, and a gravity of content and sincerity of feeling that derives from artists such as Samuel Palmer. ‘No one in our time’, wrote Eric Gill in Gollancz's publicity leaflet for The Farmer's Year, ‘has succeeded better in presenting the nobility of massiveness and breadth of life of the earth on a scale so grand.’ The artist herself, who possessed a gift for friendship with people of all races and classes, was influential as a teacher, lecturer, and author of two respected texts. The Savoy Cocktail Book. Being in the main a complete compendium of the Cocktails, Rickeys, Daisies, Slings, Shrubs, Smashes, Fizzes, Juleps, Cobblers, Fixes, and other Drinks, known and vastly appreciated in this year of grace 1930, with sundry notes of amusement and interest concerning them, together with subtle Observations upon Wine and their special occasions. Being in the particular an elucidation of the Manners and Customs of people of quality in a period of some equality. [Signed]

London: Constable, 1933. London: Constable, 1933. Early Reprint. Hardcover. Fine. Second Printing of the Second Edition, new and enlarged (pp. 282-86 list "New and Additional Cocktails"), of this classic mixology guide. Signed by Craddock, in very elegant script, on copyright page: "Here's How! / Harry Craddock / December 10, 1934." 8vo: 287,[1]pp. Publisher's finely woven tangerine cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in black, decorative end papers; wanting the dust jacket. Presented in two parts: Cocktails and Wines with an introduction by "Colette." A superlative example, square, tightly bound, internally fresh and bright, virtually pristine, with the author's scarce autograph. & ¶ First published in 1930, three years before this new and enlarged edition (complete with all of Gilbert Rumbold's stylish color illustrations from the first edition). A compendium featuring some 750 of Craddock's popular classics, including the famous Corpse Reviver #2, which he invented, and the Dry Martini, which he popularized. Craddock decamped to London's Savoy Hotel after Prohibition put a crimp on his career in the United States. His bar book was one of the first to not only list drink recipes but also to provide a wine guide. (Craddock contended every good bartender possessed a solid wine knowledge.) It is a fascinating record of the cocktails that set London alight in the years between the Wars. The legendary Savoy opened in 1889; César Ritz was its first manager, and Auguste Escoffier created its fine cuisine. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. Smith Bindery with vellum corner tips and gilt decoration to the upper cover and to the spine. Presentation copy from Hornby to Lady Hambleden, inscribed on the front end paper, "Patricia Hambleden from the Printer, C.H.StJ.H., June 14 1934" A near fine copy with just a hint of dustiness to the spine, but an unusually well preserved example. Print handset in Ptolemy type, title page printed in red and black, with chapter headings and marginalia printed in red to each page and initial letters in blue. Four full page and 22 smaller wood engravings by Gwendolen Raverat. The W.H. Smith copy. A fine association. Patricia Hambleden's husband, William Henry Smith, was the great-grandson of W.H. Smith, founder of the eponymous firm of stationers and newsagents. His father, Frederick Smith rowed with St John Hornby at Oxford and after taking ownership of W.H. Smith in 1891, brought Hornby in as a partner. Hornby left some two years later, with Smith's encouragement and support, to found the Ashendene Press. It was Hornby's connection with Douglas Cockerell which led Smith to hire Cockerell to run the W.H. Smith bindery. W.H. Smith bound all the books for the Ashendene Press. Frederick Smith died in 1928 and was succeeded by William Henry both as Viscount Hambleden and as owner of W.H. Smith.

Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper to close friend, Bobby Bevan, "For Bobbie [sic], who covers the waterfront but, isn't always watching the sea. from Tony Powell Feb 13th 1935". A near fine copy, which is slightly cocked, in a very good dustwrapper indeed, which is complete and generally crisp with just a couple of trivial closed tears and some dustiness. R.A. Bevan (1901-1974) was a member of the 1930s literary set and a particular friend of Anthony Powell. He became a significant figure in the advertising industry. R.D. Bloomfield writing his obituary in The Times described him as "the personification of the greatest days of English advertising". Whilst at S.H. A rather shabby copy in a tanned and lightly restored dust jacket. First edition, first impression. A sublime association copy with the author's signed contemporary presentation inscription to the front free endpaper: "Teach me your tables Death said he to Life to Anna from Malc". The recipient was the poet Anna Wickham, a long-term intimate friend of Lowry's and the author of the poem "The Happy Mathematician", the last line of which Lowry has appropriated for this presentation inscription. Wickham hanged herself in 1947. Presentation copies of this book are of the utmost scarcity. We have never handled another example.
