        PUEBLO INDIAN POTTERY.

Nice, France. . 1933 - 22pp. plus fifty photo-lithographic plates, colored by hand, on separate sheets. Folio. Text stitched and plates unbound as issued, contained within original publisher's cloth portfolio, upper cover with mounted plate and ties. Slight wear to extremities. Original tissue guards intact. Titles and first pages of introductions printed in red and black, half- titles, parallel text in English and French. Very good. Limited edition of 750 copies signed by the publisher. A rare part set of Chapman's survey of Pueblo Indian pottery, an art which was an integral part of a "native culture, unique among the patterns of the American Indian, [which] had its inception, and had reached its maturity, in the heart of the great southwestern area of the United States" (Introduction). This work is much scarcer than the same publisher's portfolio of Sioux Indian paintings which was issued several years later. The text gives a general introduction to the ceramic art of the Pueblo Indians of the southwestern United States, then concentrates on an overview of the pottery produced in the pueblos of Taos and Picuris, San Juan, Santa Clara, San Ildefonso, Tesuque, Cochiti, Santa Domingo and Santa Ana. This is followed by descriptions of the specific examples of the pottery shown in the plates. Szwedzicki also produced portfolios of Kiowa Indian art and Pueblo art, all published in the south of France in the 1930s.

Vintage Snapshot Photograph of the Babe and the Duke on Waikiki Beach

      - Small vintage snapshot photograph of Babe Ruth and Duke Kahanamoku on Waikiki Beach. 4.5" x 2.75". Mounted on a black album page and presumably removed from an album. Near fine. The photo depicts both sports legends in bathing suits, standing with paddles in front of an outrigger canoe. In the background, another Hawaiian man brandishes a paddle (left-handed, as the Babe would do) and appears to be about to swat both of the legends in the back of the head. The two met in 1933 or 1934 when Ruth accompanied a barnstorming team that included Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, and Lefty Gomez. We have seen other copies of this photograph, so assume that it achieved some modest distribution in Hawaii.

Karl Marx. Selected Works. In two volumes

New York: International Publishers, , [1933]. Prepared by the Marx-Engels-Lenin Institute, Moscow under the editorship of V. Adoratsky. 2 volumes, octavo. Publisher's red coarse-grained cloth, spines lettered gilt, with the striking dust jackets. Dust jackets price clipped, slightly chipped at the spine ends and with short tears to the front joint and turn in of both volumes. Internally very clean. An excellent set in the rare dust jackets. First English language edition of this selection of Marx's writings, originally published by the Co-operative Publishing Society of Foreign Workers in the U.S.S.R. and here printed in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, edited in the English version by C. P. Dutt. The original selection was made by V. V. Adoratsky, the editor of the 36-volume edition of Marx's and Engels's complete works. A publisher's note at the beginning of volume one advises that "most of the documents included in this volume have either been specially translated for this edition or are revised translations of earlier publications of the works of Marx and Engels.

The Novels and Plays of Saki. Complete in One Volume

New York: The Viking Press. 1933. Stated "Second 'Omnibus' Volume." Rebound in blue half morocco gilt and papercovered boards, probably soon after publication. Spine expertly preserved, otherwise a nice near fine copy. This copy bears two identical examples of the armorial bookplate of Thomas Ruggles Pynchon (on both the pastedown and front fly), and was purchased by us some years back from a scout who purchased it at a tag sale at the author's parents' home. Presumably the bookplate was that of the author's father, also named Thomas Ruggles Pynchon. One could speculate at length about the effect of the spooky, fantastic tales of Saki on the young Pynchon, and indeed you are free to do so. We won't, but we are not above selling the book based on those conjectures. .

Dr. Kuroda's Birds in Life Colours (3 Volume Set)

Shukyosha Shoin, Tokyo 1933 - [1933-1935, Three Volume Set, 1092 Birds Illustrated on 155 Color Plates]. Japanese Title: "Chorui Genshoku dai Zusetsu - Kuroda Nagamichi-cho," each volujme with a heavy cardboard slip cases, Volume 1 - Showa 8 (1933), Volumes 2 - Showa 9 (1934), Volume 3 - Showa 10 (1935), 4to (9 1/2 x 12 1/2 in 23.7 x 31.5 cm), half morocco, blindstamped vignettes on front board with gilt lettering in English, gilt lettering (English and Japanese) and decoration on the spines, top edge dyed, tissue guard protected title pages in Japanese and English, text in Japanese script (hiragana & kanji) but often accompanied by corresponding Latin and English script, 1092 different birds, catalogued, described and illustrated on 155 color plates. Though a comprehensive table of contents and three different indices, the birds found in each volume are extensively cross referenced and indexed. ~ Condition. The books are in Very Good condition. The head and foot of all spines is heavily worn. The spine covering of Volume 3 is a darker shade than that on Volumes 1 & 2. On Volume 3, the cloth on the front board is starting to pull up in spots where it meets the spine covering. There are marginal smudges on approximately 5 plates. A number of pages have smudges on the back which probably were created during the printing process. None of the smudges impact on the images on the plates and the plates and text are otherwise clean and free of faults. The title page on each volume has the following inscription signed by the author: "To. Mrs. Frank E. Lowe wife of Maj. General Frank E. Lowe, U.S. Army, Metabegwandi, Harrison, Maine, Nagamichi Kuroda." Volume 1 has a booksellers label (Inoue Book Store, Tokyo) pasted over another label and there is evidence that under these a label has been removed. Volumes 1 & 2 have a red seal on the title page which is identified by a rice paper type paste-on as the "Seal of the Iwasaki Library." The same seal is found at one or two places at the rear of Volumes 1 and 2 on pages following the plates. The author's title and the name of the publisher are translated into English on rice paper type paste-ons on the title page directly below the Japanese script. Volume 3 has a seal at the upper right of the title page that has been obliterated with blue ink. The same seal (not obliterated but indistinct is found on the back of the title page and on the page that follows. Volume 3 does not contain the Iwasaki Library seal. Aside from these seals, the books have no other library type treatments. The slip cases are in Good condition. They have heavy wear and staining but they are solid with no separation. ~~ Extra Postage Applies. This is a heavy set (20 pounds packed) and extra postage will apply.         Tapeten- und Linoleumhaus Paul Schmitz: Neuzeitbau 33 [Pre-WWII German wallpaper samples]

Tapeten- und Linoleumhaus Paul Schmitz, Stuttgart 1933 - Oblong octavo. Unpaginated. [2]pp (Title), [85] leaves (Wallpaper samples). Original bolted linen covered boards with red lettering on front cover and spine. Scarce catalogue containing 85 delightful color wallpaper samples from the 1933 collection of the German wallpaper manufacturer "Tapeten- und Linoleumhaus Paul Schmitz." The samples are composed of a variety of abstract and geometric designs, some heavily textured on various types of paper stock. Bauhaus wallpapers were not "patterned" in the traditional sense but had mottled, flecked, and combed markings and textured effects. Model and style number printed at verso of each sample. Laid in, an original postcard seldf-addressed to 'Tapeten- und Linoleumhaus Paul Schmitz'. The textile designers for Schmitz in 1933 were from the "Bauhaus Kreise." Sale terms and conditions, and advertisting text, on end paper and title page. Minor and sporadic sunning and foxing along edges of binding. Free front endpaper and title slightly foxed. Text in German. Binding and interior in overall good+ to very good, samples in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        La canción del barrio.

[Buenos Aires, Francisco A. Colombo, 1933]. - Small portfolio containing a suite of 15 engraved plates in the dry point technique. Illustrated front-wrapper serving as title page. One of 90 copies printed on soft paper. Edited by Viau and Zona. Enrique Fernández Chelo designed and engraved the dry point plates and made the impression from the hand-press of the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de la Nación. Evaristo Carriego reflects the colourful street life of the bohemian parts of Buenos Aires in the early 20th century. Evaristo, a minor popular poet and a great conversationalist, had made a great impression on the young Jorge Luis Borges, whose family lived in the same part of Buenos Aires. Borges’ life of Carriego (published in 1930 - see item no 55 in this catalogue) in which he recalls his childhood memories, inspired the present series. Francisco A. Colombo (1868-1953) was a self-taught craftsman of great talent. He began as a modest printer who made his own paper in the rural town of San Antonio de Areco; by the late 1920s he was already the most accomplished printer in South America producing books of considerable quality.         K'oen -yu ts'iuen t'ou

[Beijing, 1674, but reprinted Korea, 1933]. - Xylograph, printed on 6 sheets, the southern polar landmass embellished with animals, including a unicorn, a lion, a rhinoceros, a crocodile, a giraffe, a beaver and a turkey, the spandrels with eight large lozenges with text descriptions, mounted on a large screen. One of the largest world maps ever printed. Verbiest's original is as rare as its forerunner produced by Matteo Ricci at Beijing in 1602 (or its now-lost predecessors). This reprint is almost as rare. It is easily distinguished from the 1674 by the addition of a new imprint in Chinese (accompanied with a chop in this example), and by the fact that the text in the spandrels of the original is within differently-shaped frames. The map itself has many similarities to Ricci's (on a Mercator projection), with updating to reflect European (largely English) exploration of the Canadian Arctic and Greenland. A remarkable piece of printing by the Jesuits in China, published to mark their official return to favour. Beginning with Ricci at the end of the sixteenth century, the Jesuits were really only tolerated in China as scientific advisers and were not allowed to embark on a general mission throughout the country, nevertheless the influence at the imperial court of Ricci's successor, Adam Schall von Bell aroused the jealousy of imperial agents who, on the pretext of the Jesuits supposedly preparing the way for Portuguese occupation, in 1664 had Schall von Bell and five assistants sentenced to death. Schall von Bell was reprieved, but his Chinese assistants were executed and all the priests in China, were rounded up in Canton with a view to being expelled. It wasn't until 1667 when the young Emperor K'ang-Hsi began to take a hand in the affairs of government and made friends with Schall's successor, Ferdinand Verbiest, that the measures taken against the Christians were rescinded and the position of the Fathers made secure. The 1674 original is reproduced in 'Europa und die Kaiser' (Frankfurt, 1985), at p.109-111. A Canton version c.1860 is reproduced (in error for the original), in 'Chine Ciel et Terre' (Gent, 1982), at p.408-409.

THE HOGARTH LETTERS. [In Rare Dustwrapper].

Hogarth Press, London 1933 - Woolf, Virginia. THE HOGARTH LETTERS. [In Rare Dustwrapper]. London: The Hogarth Press, 1933. Scarce First Collected Edition of 11* of the 12 original volumes printed in the Hogarth Letters Series. 8vo. 336 pp. Buff cloth-backed paper boards, printed in black and dark brown, designed by John Banting. Contents paginated separately. Includes, Virginia Woolf's, Letter To A Young Poet, (John Lehmann). Peter Quennell, in lieu of a response from John Lehmann, answers with, A Letter To Mrs. Woolf. A fine fresh copy in the rare original printed glassine dustwrapper unknown by the bibliographer. The fragile glassine shows some wear & is carefully reinforced. Rebecca West's, A Letter To A Grandfather was not published until March, 1933, one month after this Collected volume was issued and therefore not included. A rather elusive Hogarth Press title, especially so in dustwrapper - we know of no other copy thus. One of only 500 cc. Kirkpatrick and Clarke A17a. Woolmer 321. Custom stiff clear Mylar outer wrapper supplied. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

CHINIGCHINICH: A REVISED AND ANNOTATED VERSION OF ALFRED ROBINSON'S TRANSLATION OF FATHER GERONIMO BOSCANA'S HISTORICAL ACCOUNT OF THE BELIEF, USAGES, CUSTOMS AND EXTRAVAGENCIES OF THE INDIANS OF THIS MISSION OF SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO CALLED THE ACAGCHEMEM.

Fine Arts Press / Thomas E. Williams, Santa Ana, California 1933 - .title continues: TRIBE. Limited to 500 copies. Edited by Phil Townsend Hanna. Annotations by John P. Harrington. Foreward by Frederick Webb Hodge. Illustrations by Jean Goodwin. Published by Thomas E. Williams. Half cloth with dark tan boards with gilt cover vignette, paper spine label, orange patterned endpapers. Illustrated with 11 plates including 5 multicolored color linoleum blocks by Jean Goodwin, 2 reproductions of lithographs including one of Mission San Juan Capistrano, 2 maps, multicolored chart, and bibliography. Corners rubbed, evidence of old damping affecting part of the cover and small spot on foredge, not especially objectionable. (see photos) Small bookplate of Roy Seaton Horton on front endpaper. Overall a very good copy. Firmly bound with bright and fresh plates and text. Color of the linoleum block prints is exceptional. Although not called for this copy has a special page SIGNED BY THE FIVE CONTRIBUTORS. Quite possibly one of just a few copies so produced and the only copy we are aware of with the page of signatures. Chinigchinich is an ethnographic account of the culture and (notably) religious beliefs of the native Californians in the vicinity of the famous mission San Juan Capistrano. This is the only first-hand account of mission-era Juaneños we have. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
