The Arthur Rackham Fairy Book [Ltd]

Harrap; London; 1933; 8vo (9 1/4" x 6 1/2"); 287 pages - VG+/None. First (and only) limited edition, 1 of 460 copies signed by Rackham, this copy #10. White vellum covers with gilt stamped lettering and rules on front cover, TE gilt, other edges scalloped and uncut. The original spine has been neatly replaced with a white cloth spine with gilt climbing vine design, and with the title in gilt on a matching white cloth label. The covers are a wee bit soiled as is the spine, but the book is otherwise tight and clean and bright. With a color frontispiece plus 7 other color illustrations by Rackham, plus 60 B&W illustrations by Rackham, plus white endpapers with line illustrations and decoration in gold by Rackham. The 7 color text illustrations all have a blank facing page on which the title of the illustration is printed, and the book contains a 2 page 'illustrators preface' written by Rackham. This is a scarcer Rackham title in the trade edition (perhaps because it was issued during the Depression), and even scarcer in the limited edition. An absolutely delightful book and a nice collectable copy. TO SEE MORE PICTURES AND ADDITIONAL SPECIAL ITEMS, VISIT OUR BOOKSELLER's HOMEPAGE. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

PROCEEDINGS OF A COURT OF INQUIRY IN THE CASE OF MAJOR MARCUS A. RENO CONCERNING HIS CONDUCT AT THE BATTLE OF THE LITTLE BIG HORN RIVER, JUNE 25-26, 1876.

[n.p., n.d.] 1933 - One of four copies authorized by W. A. Graham, Colonel J. A. G. D. Chief, Military Affairs Section in 1933. Tall, thick quarto. Red buckram, gold stamping on spine, 676 pp. R. S. Ellison's personal copy with his name and the title stamped in gold on the spine. Laid-in is a seven-page article, RENO COURT OF INQUIRY by Bruce R. Liddic, that provides a great deal of insight and understanding of this book. Bruce Liddic says "There are only two sources upon which to base the transcriptions of the Inquiry's stenographer: 1) The official longhand written record now stored in the National Archives, and 2) The Chicago Times' account which was printed in that newspaper during the inquiry. All other copies, editions, versions or variations, no matter the accuracy or the end product, are merely a reprint/retype of number one or two or a combination of number one and two above." Prior to being given to the National Archives in 1941, the "Official Record" of the Reno Inquiry was kept by the Judge Advocate general from 1879 until 1941. During this period Colonel W. A. Graham [1919-1920] received permission to make a longhand copy of the Official Record of 1879. In 1921 Graham produced ten copies of the 125 page abstract. Then in 1933, due to the original document deterioration, Graham had four more copies typed. Graham retained one copy, one was given to the National Archives, and two were given to the Judge Advocate Library. From these impressions, three more copies were typed under Graham's direction, by Miss Helen Bury, his secretary, and Miss Frances J. Burke. One of these is in the Newberry Library, one is unaccounted for, and one copy given to R. S. Ellison in 1942. Ellison, a Western Americana historian, is best remembered as being involved with Brig. General William Carey Brown in obtaining the Camp notes from Mrs. Camp after his death. Written in Ellison's hand in pencil are the words, "Received 3-11-42," on one of the preliminary [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Water Wheel.

[Ithaca:] Dragon Press, Duffield and Green, 1933 - Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine rather dull, traces of damp to lower board, contents somewhat browned but a very good copy in the chipped and frayed dust jacket. First edition, first printing. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper: "This one for them Abernathys for having helped me in so many ways, sincerely Julian Mar.7.33." The recipient was Milton Abernathy, the editor of Contempo, a short lived but notable little magazine published in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, from 1931 to 1934, to which Shapiro (as John Sanford) contributed. This was Shapiro's first novel and the only one to bear his real name. John A. Sanford (1904-2003) was born Julian Lawrence Shapiro, but adopted his pen-name to forestall anti-Semitism, taking the name from his protagonist in The Water Wheel. A friend of Nathanael West whom he followed to Hollywood in a less than stellar attempt to become a screen writer, in 1938 he married the far more successful writer Marguerite Roberts. The couple were victims of the McCarthy witch hunt in the 1950s, and their refusal to testify led to their blacklisting in the film business for two decades. Shapiro may be considered one of the least justly neglected greats of American literature. His work was innovative and uncompromising - typically written without hope of popular acclaim, his books remain notably fresh. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Presenting Lily Mars

Garden City: Doubleday Doran. 1933. First. First edition. A small stain on the copyright page (and the facing dedication page), a little smudging to the boards, a near fine copy in a partially price-clipped, very good plus dustwrapper with a small chip at the crown and light edgewear. Nicely Inscribed by the author to his close friend, and occasional co-author, Harry Leon Wilson: "For H.L., who may be reminded of something or somebody, here and there --- N.B.T. Aug. 26, 1933. Kennebunkport." Interestingly, Tarkington signs using his true first initial "N" for his real first name "Newton," which he seldom did -- perhaps he did so as a lighthearted jab at Wilson, who often went by the name "H. Leon Wilson." The novel was bought by MGM as a dramatic vehicle for Lana Turner, but the script turned out to be too lighthearted and Norman Taurog's 1943 film version was instead a musical, showcasing Judy Garland as the small-town girl who impresses Broadway producer Van Heflin. A great association copy: Tarkington and Wilson collaborated on a number of plays early in their careers, several of which were filmed, probably most notably, The Man From Home in 1914 (and re-filmed again in 1922), one of the earliest feature films directed by Cecil B. De Mille. Another collaboration was Cameo Kirby, filmed first in 1914, but most notably by John Ford in 1923 with John Gilbert, Alan Hale, and Jean Arthur. Wilson, who was married to Rose O'Neill (creator of the Kewpie Doll), wrote several other books that were filmed, including Merton of the Movies, Ruggles of Red Gap, and Bunker Bean. Over sixty films were made from Tarkington's works, including The Magnificent Ambersons. .

        PUEBLO INDIAN POTTERY.

Nice, France. . 1933 - 22pp. plus fifty photo-lithographic plates, colored by hand, on separate sheets. Folio. Text stitched and plates unbound as issued, contained within original publisher's cloth portfolio, upper cover with mounted plate and ties. Slight wear to extremities. Original tissue guards intact. Titles and first pages of introductions printed in red and black, half- titles, parallel text in English and French. Very good. Limited edition of 750 copies signed by the publisher. A rare part set of Chapman's survey of Pueblo Indian pottery, an art which was an integral part of a "native culture, unique among the patterns of the American Indian, [which] had its inception, and had reached its maturity, in the heart of the great southwestern area of the United States" (Introduction). This work is much scarcer than the same publisher's portfolio of Sioux Indian paintings which was issued several years later. The text gives a general introduction to the ceramic art of the Pueblo Indians of the southwestern United States, then concentrates on an overview of the pottery produced in the pueblos of Taos and Picuris, San Juan, Santa Clara, San Ildefonso, Tesuque, Cochiti, Santa Domingo and Santa Ana. This is followed by descriptions of the specific examples of the pottery shown in the plates. Szwedzicki also produced portfolios of Kiowa Indian art and Pueblo art, all published in the south of France in the 1930s.

Vintage Snapshot Photograph of the Babe and the Duke on Waikiki Beach

      - Small vintage snapshot photograph of Babe Ruth and Duke Kahanamoku on Waikiki Beach. 4.5" x 2.75". Mounted on a black album page and presumably removed from an album. Near fine. The photo depicts both sports legends in bathing suits, standing with paddles in front of an outrigger canoe. In the background, another Hawaiian man brandishes a paddle (left-handed, as the Babe would do) and appears to be about to swat both of the legends in the back of the head. The two met in 1933 or 1934 when Ruth accompanied a barnstorming team that included Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, and Lefty Gomez. We have seen other copies of this photograph, so assume that it achieved some modest distribution in Hawaii.

Publisher's red coarse-grained cloth, spines lettered gilt, with the striking dust jackets. Dust jackets price clipped, slightly chipped at the spine ends and with short tears to the front joint and turn in of both volumes. Internally very clean. An excellent set in the rare dust jackets. First English language edition of this selection of Marx's writings, originally published by the Co-operative Publishing Society of Foreign Workers in the U.S.S.R. and here printed in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, edited in the English version by C. A publisher's note at the beginning of volume one advises that "most of the documents included in this volume have either been specially translated for this edition or are revised translations of earlier publications of the works of Marx and Engels.

The Novels and Plays of Saki. Complete in One Volume

New York: The Viking Press. 1933. Stated "Second 'Omnibus' Volume." Rebound in blue half morocco gilt and papercovered boards, probably soon after publication. Spine expertly preserved, otherwise a nice near fine copy. This copy bears two identical examples of the armorial bookplate of Thomas Ruggles Pynchon (on both the pastedown and front fly), and was purchased by us some years back from a scout who purchased it at a tag sale at the author's parents' home. Presumably the bookplate was that of the author's father, also named Thomas Ruggles Pynchon. One could speculate at length about the effect of the spooky, fantastic tales of Saki on the young Pynchon, and indeed you are free to do so. We won't, but we are not above selling the book based on those conjectures. .

A L Burt 1933 - New York ,orange cloth black lettering and decoration. F/F .The book is tight ,with no inscriptions, foxing or staining .Cloth is bright with no fade or toning. The wrapper has had minor restoration to spine ends.
