The Tomb of Tut*Ankh*Amen / Discovered by the Late Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter / Volume III

Cassell and Company, Ltd., London 1933 - States "First Published 1933", no later printings mentioned. The first two volumes of "The Tomb of Tut*Ankh*Amen" (1923 and 1927) are not uncommon, though Cassell first editions of those volumes in original brown cloth now command a respectable price. This third volume with its 80 wonderful glossy B&W plates depicting the contents of the two "store chambers" of the tomb, however, wasn't published until the Depression year of 1933, evidently sold less well, and is indeed uncommon. We have collated this copy; it is complete, everything attached where it should be, and holding together satisfactorily -- condition "good." Please note, however, that the old booksellers are only half in jest when they remind us "'Good' isn't very good." This copy NOT ex-library, NOT water-damaged, but three of the board corners have worn through the cloth; the double plate (Plates VII and VIII, "The Tutelary Goddesses") at pg. 46 stands slightly proud (may have once come loose and been re-tipped); both pastedowns show modest areas of roughness where something (bookplates?) was/were once removed; spine angled perhaps 3/8ths inch (1 cm.), and an attempt was once made the repair the rear internal hinge with old-fashioned nitrate ("Scotch") tape, now yellowed. (Both hinges are holding adequately, and -- while the Scotch tape is persistent -- rear hinge seems to be holding without any dependence on remainder of this tape.) External gilt titles and scarab device to front board somewhat dulled, but still legible. In other words, this copy is complete to itself and adequate to complete a set in original brown cloth, no problems whatsoever with text or photographic illustrations, but its exterior is just not lovely enough to be considered "of gift quality." King Tut, who ascended to the throne at the age of 9, is believed to have ruled 1332-1323 B.C. He married his half-sister, Ankhesenpaaten (later Ankhesenamen.) They had two daughters, both stillborn, of whom the mummies were both found in the tomb and are shown here. Tut was the son of Akhenaten, previously Amenhotep IV of the 18th dynasty, who attempted to replace traditional Egyptian polytheism with a "monolatristic, henotheistic, or even quasi-monotheistic" worship of the sun deity Aten. It appears traditional forms reasserted themselves after the father's death -- his monuments were dismantled and hidden, his statues were destroyed, his name was excluded from the list of kings, and the son, Tut-Ankh-Aten, became Tut-Ankh-Amen. The 1922 discovery by Howard Carter in the Valley of Kings of Tutankhamen's nearly intact tomb, an enterprise funded by Lord Carnarvon, received worldwide press coverage and sparked a renewed public interest in ancient Egypt. A classic of the golden age of Egyptian archaeology. Offering here the first printing of the less common third volume, only. Large 8vo; 248 pp. including index.         The Autobiography of Alice B Toklas

New York: Harcourt Brace, 1933. First edition. Near Fine book in Very Good+ jacket. Original blue publisher's cloth binding, with silver embossing to spine and front cover. Small bump to foot of spine; darkening to the top edges of text block. Text block tight, and internally unmarked and bright. Collates complete, including frontispiece and 15 plates. Some fading to jacket with some creasing to front panel; chip to top left corner near spine not affecting title or text; small closed tear to upper rear panel; minor soiling to rear. A very nice copy of this important work in Stein's modernist oeuvre. Considered one of Stein's most accessible works, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas experiments with the memoir genre by depicting Stein's artist contemporaries through the point-of-view of her life partner Alice (Winterson). Criticized by Ernest Hemingway and Henri Matisse, The Autobiography nevertheless was a commercial success in its own time and is now considered an important work of modernism. It additionally broke new ground, openly representing a long-term same-sex relationship between two women and giving readers an intimate look into both their private home and their infamous artistic salon.         The Farmer's Year: A Calendar of English Husbandry

New York: Longmans, Green and Co., 1933. First American Edition, 1st Printing. A Near Fine copy of the first American Edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original black cloth (upper corners bumped, modest rubbing to the spine ends and board corners with some tiny rubs through, light surface rubbing and a bit of marking to the cloth, tiny indent to the front board within the "G" of Leighton's name, tiny bend to the upper leading corner to the pages, lacking the exceedingly scarce slipcase -- but easily the nicest copy of the first American edition that we have seen). With both the text and illustrations by Clare Leighton (a renowned English/American artist, writer, and illustrator best known for her wood engravings), the book contains a dozen full black and white full-page illustrations as well as seven vignettes, a lovely letter block at the start of each chapter. Each pastedown and facing side of its adjoining free endpaper also are of Leighton's design. A highly-regarded artist, Leighton received an Award for greatest contribution to the culture of New England, New England Society of New York, New York, NY, USA (1954), an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts, Colby College, Waterville, ME, USA (1940), a First Prize and Logan Medal, International Engraving Exhibition, The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, USA (1930). In 1945 she was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member and became a full Academician in 1949.         Thurmond-Holmes Lynching: Real-photo postcard, titled "San Jose, Calif. Nov. 26 - 1933 11:25 P.M."

[N.p.] 1933 - 1 vols. 3-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches. Photo of California's Last Lynching, 1933. On Nov 9, 1933, 22-year old Brooke Hart was kidnapped and held for $40,000 ransom. A massive manhunt led to Thomas Harold Thurmond. After six hours of interrogation, Thurmond confessed and named his accomplice, John M. Holmes. They both admitted murdering Brooke and dropping his body into the San Francisco Bay. On the evening of the 26th, a lynch mob broke into the Santa Clara County Jail and dragged Holmes and Thurmond to the St. James Park where 3000 onlookers from San Jose and the surrounding area, chanted "string them up." Governor 'sunny Jim" Rolf refused to call out the National Guard to protect the kidnappers, and referred to the lynching as a "lesson." "Thurmond was hung from the limb of a venerable mulberry tree, and, the limb of a great elm a few feet away served as Holmes' gallows a second or two later." - 'History of San Jose' by Clyde Arbuckle. Souvenir hunters so damaged the trees that they had to be cut down, and not a trace remains of them. This lynching was the last to take place in California, and was the basis for John Steinbeck's short story, "The Lonesome Vigilante."The photograph depicts the the three limbs of the tree rising from the trunk at center, and the hanging corpses of the two lynched men, Thurmond at left, partly clothed, above a small group of onlookers; Holmes (unclothed) at right. AN EXTRAORDINARY DOCUMENT OF AMERICAN SOCIAL HISTORY.

        Looking Forward

John Day 1933 - One of ten deluxe copies only, prepared for presentation by the publisher and FDR. The publisher, in addition to the first trade edition, published a deluxe edition in a different format of 100 copies only, all numbered. Copies 11 through 100 were for sale. Copies 1 through 10 were not for sale. This is copy 10, one of the first 10 copies explicitly (according to the colophon page) not for sale. Differs from the first trade edition in many ways, including gold gilt on top edge and beveled boards. Also, strangely, the deluxe edition is a smaller format than the trade edition, although it has all the same content. Housed in a custom-made collector slipcase. Needless to say, deluxe one of ten copies of significant books by US Presidents are very uncommon. This is an early title by FDR, articles and speeches before he became President, and published just when he started his first term. Issued without a dust jacket. We have seen only one other copy of this presentation edition, and it was inscribed by FDR. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Photo Album]: Western Travel and Farm Family Photos

Colorado Springs, 1933. Near Fine. Oblong small quarto measuring 7" x 11". String-tied brown cloth over flexible paper boards. Contains 250 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.5" x 3.5" and 3.5" x 4.5" with some captions. Most pages are detached thus very good with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a family between 1925 and 1933 with vacation photography as well as vernacular family home images. The early images show wintery scenes of dogs and children running through snow as well as landscape photographs of farms. There are photos of horseback riding, dogs running, and herds of sheep. Many of the photos show trips to Colorado with images of Pike's Peak, hiking, and snow capped mountains. One caption from a hike reads, "the view from Broadmore Hill, South of Cheyenne School." Other views are from Austin Bluff and Stage Road. The natural beauty of Colorado Spring's is seen throughout these photos with images of trees, lakes, creeks, and the various mountain roads. Interspersed throughout the album are photos of various family members posing around homes along with children playing. There are also photos of the family farm including workers and farm animals and views of various crops. Additionally there are portrait style images of a young woman and her friend posing around the farm. Others show the elderly matriarch of the family and her husband with grandchildren and animals. One interesting group of photos shows a man and a woman outside using a tree stump as a table and furiously typing on typewriters in some sort of typing contest. The family continued to visit Colorado annually through 1933 often enjoying the Colorado Springs area. A group of photos towards the end of the album have been combined to create a panoramic photo of the mountain ranges with captions labeling each peak. Besides farm work members of the family were also involved in medical professions, (a professional portrait photo of a woman in a full nurse uniform is also seen here), and the military, a photo of two navy men is also present. An extensive account of a farm family in the 1920s and 30s and their trips to Colorado.

Private L. Kingsley, 14th West Yorkshire Regiment West Indies Voyage With Emphasis on Jamaica - together with 7 Medals.

[1933-1934], [Jamaica] 1933 - JAMAICA: an Album With Original Photographs From an "Athletic" Officer - Includes 7 Army Medals. Photograph album compiled by a young, athletic officer identified as Private L. Kingsley while serving with the 14th West Yorkshire Regiment in the Defence of Jamaica. Included with the album are seven (7) army command sports medals earned by Kingsley from 1930 to 1935 whilst abroad, one earned in Jamaica and one in Baluchistan, the others unspecified. Medals are made by F. Phillips of Aldershot, all but one in their original cases as issued. Oblong quarto album, tri-colour string-tied boards, contains 215 black and white photographs, three (3) newspaper clippings, and two (2) ephemeral documents printed by the army. Photographs vary in size, the smallest approximately 4 x 6.5 cm and the largest 10.5 x 10.5 cm. LOVELY AND UNIQUE ALBUM WITH ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF JAMAICA. VERY ATTRACTIVE. The album captures Jamaica with excellent photographs as the regiment was part of the Jamaica Defence Force. Street views show original colonial buildings, early nineteenth century lorries, a tram, and horse drawn carriages for transportation. An interesting and scarce photograph features a Jamaican marching music band. At least one expansive plantation estate was visited, yielding an unusual image of the factory with wagons overflowing with hand harvested sugarcane. Approximately 70 photographs appear to originate in Jamaica, some possibly being from Bermuda. The album is dispersed with occasional photographs of army sporting events and Kingsley earning a plethora of medals and trophies, and concludes with group photographs of the regiment and portraits of family members, some of which are presumably H. Kingsley. vols. volumen(es)/volume(s) S.P. páginas [Attributes: Hard Cover]
