        Imitation of Life

New York: Harper & Brothers. 1933. First. First edition. Fine in red cloth boards with especially fresh paper labels on the spine and front board in very good dust jacket with a few scattered spot on the front wrap, some sunning to the spine, and light wear at the edges with a few nicks. A novel about two single mothers, one white and one black, who create a successful restaurant franchise but through their daughters suffer at the hands racial prejudice and tragic choices. The novel was filmed twice, first in 1934 with Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers and again in 1959 with Lana Turner and Juanita Moore. The first film was nomination for Best Picture and named to the National Film Registry in 2005, while the Douglas Sirk remake is now considered a classic of 1950s cinema and one of the German director's masterpieces. Hurst, while popular in her day, has largely been forgotten, despite her championing of women's rights and racial equality, particularly during the Harlem Renaissance and through her friendship with Zora Neale Hurston. A remarkably scarce title and particularly so in jacket. .

A pillar of both the Irish and British literary establishments, in his later years he served as an Irish Senator for two terms. Yeats was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival and, along with Lady Gregory, Edward Martyn, and others, founded the Abbey Theatre, where he served as its chief during its early years. In 1923 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature as the first Irishman so honoured for what the Nobel Committee described as "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation." Yeats is generally considered one of the few writers who completed their greatest works after being awarded the Nobel Prize; such works include The Tower (1928) and The Winding Stair and Other Poems (1929). Yeats was a very good friend of American expatriate poet and Bollingen Prize laureate Ezra Pound.         THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1933., 1933. First edition. Near fine in dust jacket, lightly darkened on the spine. Within the pages of this book, Starrett attempts to expound upon information about which Holmes and Watson were somewhat closed-mouthed. He attempts to answer questions about the origin of Holmes, his methods, his daily life, etc., that Watson, with his preoccupation with deductive reasoning and notoriously bad memory, often forgot to explain.

        Autograph Letter Signed

Silent member of the legendary Marx Brothers comedy team, whose films include "Duck Soup" (1933) and "A Night at the Opera" (1935). Autograph Letter Signed ("Harpo"), 1p, 7¼" X 10½", Cathedral City, CA, n.y. [probably summer 1961]. Addressed to Don (Woolf). Near fine. In this rare example of a Harpo ALS, written on "El Rancho Harpo" letterhead, Harpo writes to an executive with a greeting card publisher, California Artists, which published a series of Christmas cards featuring artwork by movie stars. "Here is my Xmas painting," he writes. "Hope it is not too late for your market. If you use it I would like to send them out as my own personal cards also." Harpo had long been interested in civil rights and the African-American cause, so the closing of this letter is quite appropo: "Would like to stick to my original choice of N.A.A.C.P. to receive royalties, if any." Full letters in Harpo's hand are quite scarce, and one with choice, unusual content such as this doubly so. Accompanied by a modern matte finish printed 8" X 10" photograph depicting the four Marx Brothers at the height of their fame.

        Le Mer de Nice

Les Bibliophiles de l'Automobile-Club de France, FR 1933 - Paris, Les Bibliophiles de l'Automobile-Club de France, 1933. Quarto (27x21cm). Limited edition being one of 130 copies. Printed on velin d'Arches, 43 coloured lithographed illustrations and vignettes by Georges Gobo. It is our understanding that the book was issued without a binding, the owner would pay to have the book bound to their liking. In this particular case, the owner has spared no expense. The slipcase and leather jacket are to a high standard as is the full leather binding, which is also decorated to the edges of the boards. A stunning copy. Often, when the books were presented to the bibliophiles the artists would attend the event and sign some of the illustrations and often the originals would be made available.         The Great War

George Newnes - A very near fine copy of this 26-part first edition, in a pair of fine custom made clamshell cases. The magazines are in beautiful condition. The worst you can say about this set is that there is very minor rubbing wear to a few of the spine bottoms, and there is some very minor creasing. Otherwise they are undamaged with all parts fully intact and no detached or loose covers. Very rarely seen in such nice condition. Please check the five images associated with this listing. The custom made green cloth clamshell cases are in fine condition - clean and unworn with undimmed gilt lettering and decoration to the spine, and the Churchill arms in gilt on the front face. These magazines constitute the first illustrated edition of 'The World Crisis'. The 26 parts were issued between September 1933 and October 1934. After publication Newnes offered binding services in three and four volumes, which has rendered this original appearance - fragile at the best of times - exceptionally scarce in nice condition. This set is both collector and gift worthy. It is, however, exceptionally heavy and may incur additional shipping costs depending on service requested. Standard domestic shipping will be at standard price. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Life in a Technocracy: What It Might Be Like

New York: Viking. 1933. First. First edition. Fine in fine, price-clipped dustwrapper with a very faint spot on the spine. Book length essay on the possible effects of a technocracy on American life. Loeb was an important figure in the Paris expatriate community. He is remembered in the literary world as the model for Jake Barnes's rival for the affection of Lady Brett Ashley in The Sun Also Rises, where his early kindnesses to Hemingway (using his influence with Horace Liveright to get In Our Time published) was repaid by being portrayed as Robert Cohn, the cowardly and especially "Jewish" villain. Loeb's views on a political movement which, though largely forgotten today, had numerous adherents between the wars. .

        VIOLETTE NOZIÈRES.

Editions Nicolas Flamel,, Bruxelles 1933 - 14.5x19.5. 42pp. 2hh. Fotografía en cubierta de Hans Bellmer (Katowice, Slesia 1902 - Parigi 1975), 8 ilustraciones a plena página de Dalì, Tanguy, Ernst, Brauner, Magritte, Marcel Jean, Arp, Giacometti. Poemas de André Breton, René Char, Paul Eluard, Maurice Henry, E.L.T. Mesens, César Moro, Benjamin Peret, Gui Rosey. The Problem of Endemicity" in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London A 138, 1932; "Contributions to the Mathematical Theory of Epidemics. III. Further Studies of the Problem of Endemicity" in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London A 141, 1933

      - FIRST EDITION OF A THREE VOLUME LANDMARK SERIES OF PAPERS PROVIDING THE FIRST MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS OF EPIDEMICS as well as "the first mathematical model that could be used to describe an influenza epidemic" (Coburn, "Modeling influenza," BMC Medicine, 7, 2009, 1741). "Mathematical modeling of epidemics goes back to 1927 with the formulation of [these] classical equations" Lewis, Network Science, 8.1.1). The Kermack-McKendrick model is known as the Susceptible-Infections-Recovered (SIR) model and is used to depict the number of people infected with a contagious illness in a closed population over time. To simulate an influenza epidemic the model, Kermack and McKendrick developed the pioneering threshold theorem that enables the interval between epidemics and their size to be studied. "According to this, the introduction of infectious cases into a community of susceptibles would not give rise to an epidemic if the density of susceptibles was below a certain critical value. Once the critical value was exceeded, then there would be an epidemic of magnitude sufficient to reduce the density of susceptibles as far below the threshold as it originally was above" (Cliff, Deciphering Global Epidemics, 26). [Kermack and McKendrick's] SIR model has been used as a basis for all subsequent influenza models" (Lewis). Furthermore, beyond influenza models, "most modern mathematical epidemiology" is based on these classic papers (Watts, Six Degrees, 332). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Harrison & Sons, Ltd.
