Original Typescript of "Tribute to a Hero"

1933 - 23 pages, carbon typescript, with approximately three dozen changes made in Cain's hand, and more than a dozen additional small variations between this text and the published version. Published in American Mercury in November 1933, "Tribute to a Hero," is an autobiographical piece about the Cain family following the father's 1903 job change from St. John's College at Annapolis to Washington College at Chestertown, MD, and the culture shock that ensued from this move to a "hick place" from one of "smartness, competence, and class," a state of affairs that was partially redeemed by the actions of "a great man" (with an assist from Cain's father) on the occasion of a Washington College-Maryland Agricultural College football game. Published the year before his first novel, The Postman Always Rings Twice (and following Our Government in 1930, nonfiction based on Cain's column for New York World). Called "one of Cain's finest essays" by David Madden in James M. Cain: Hard-Boiled Mythmaker. Carbon paper a bit yellowed, some pencil rubbing, not affecting text; near fine. An early manuscript of a boyhood epiphany by a writer who gained a place in the literary pantheon for his famous first novel, which is still considered one of the high spots of American hard-boiled fiction.

Vintage Snapshot Photograph of the Babe and the Duke on Waikiki Beach

Small vintage snapshot photograph of Babe Ruth and Duke Kahanamoku on Waikiki Beach. 4.5" x 2.75". Mounted on a black album page and presumably removed from an album. Near fine. The photo depicts both sports legends in bathing suits, standing with paddles in front of an outrigger canoe. In the background, another Hawaiian man brandishes a paddle (left-handed, as the Babe would do) and appears to be about to swat both of the legends in the back of the head. The two met in 1933 or 1934 when Ruth accompanied a barnstorming team that included Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, and Lefty Gomez. We have seen other copies of this photograph, so assume that it achieved some modest distribution in Hawaii. .

        God's Little Acre [Signed]

New York: The Viking Press, 1933. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing (small rubs through to the bottom corners and tiny ones to the upper corners, spine ends worn, small stain to the top of the front pastedown and title page, scattered foxing, some staining to the rear pastedown and to the rear endpapers), lacking the scarce dust jacket (and protected by a facsimile thereof), SIGNED BY ERSKINE CALDWELL on the front free endpaper; Erskine Caldwell's fourth novel centered on a dysfunctional South Carolina farming family living near the Georgia border. The patriarch, Ty Ty Walden is obsessed with finding gold on his small farm and he and his two unmarried sons spend their working hours digging holes on the farm. Having pledged to donate the profits from any gold found on a designated acre of the farm, "God's Acre" to the church, but, fearful that he might find gold on "God's Acre", Ty Ty continually changes the acre covered by his pledge. His son-in-law, Will, worked in a nearby cotton textile mill from which the owner has locked out the workers after they demanded higher wages. Because of its sexually explicit scenes, the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice recommended that the appropriate prosecutor take action and he did so, bringing an action against both Caldwell and the Viking Press for disseminating pornography. Dozens of authors, editors, and critics spoke out in the novel's defense and, in one of the most important early rulings establishing authors' First Amendment rights to freedom of expression, the court ruled in favor of Caldwell and his Publisher. Signed copies of the first edition, first printing, as is herein described, are quite scarce. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY ERSKINE CALDWELL. QUITE SCARCE.
