John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1933 - 1933 Original Hardback Wisden

1933. Hi, This lot is a 1933 Original Hardback Wisden in Good Condition, very good for the year. Wisden chaaged materials in 1933 and the quality of the books suffered as a result, hence why 1933-1936 seem a lot more faded than the early 1920s Hardbacks. This 1933 is pretty average on the outside and slightly better than average on the inside. The gilt to the front and spine is fading as per th eyear and the boards are dulled. Odd mark to the boards. Internally it is a nice and bright book, very yellow pastedowns and titlepage and clean inside. The front hinge has some weakness but no mesh is showing , it is more inbetween pages 2 and 3 and not the front hinge. The rear hinge is strong but a small amount of mesh is showing and looks like it has seen some repair but inconclusive. Excellent photoplate.

The Case of the Velvet Claws (Hardcover, inscribed)

New York: William Morrow, 1933. Second printing. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper: "To Noni / With my best / Erle Stanley Gardner." According to Dorothy Hughes' biography of Gardner, Noni Bibler was one of Gardner's early assistants, and clearly took down much of this novel from dictation. Near Fine in a Very Good dust jacket (both of which clearly state "Second Printing"). Jacket is lightly rumpled along the spine panel, with a small bit of loss at the crown and heel (no titling affected), a shallow rectangular chip at the top rear panel, and light overall rubbing and nicking. A very presentable copy.

LOST HORIZON (Original Final Draft Manuscript Of The Novel, With Author's Revisions) (Ex-James Hilton Estate)

1933. HILTON, JAMES (1900-1954). FINAL DRAFT MANUSCRIPT OF THE NOVEL LOST HORIZON, an author-annotated 257pp carbon copy typescript. [Woodford Green, Essex, April 1933], 4to (10 x 8 inches), 206 with minor authorial manuscript revisions, corrections, deletions, and insertions in black ink, 61 of which include textual changes present in the work's first edition, the first leaf with the author's initial working title, "Blue Moon," in handwritten block letters and signed ["James Hilton"], followed by a typed but unnumbered half-title and prologue title, all other leaves hand-numbered at the top right corner as follows: 1-128, 128A, 128B, 129-206, 206A, 207-209, 209A, 210-211, 211A, 211B, 211C, 212-236, [a single page designated "237-242"], 243, 243A, [Unnumbered epilogue title page], 244-253. All leaves have four uniform holes in the left margin for insertion in a binder and are age-toned with occasional minor chipping; many have additional blue-pencil and ordinary-pencil corrections in two other distinct, certainly proof-corrector, hands belonging to the editors at William Morrow, Hilton's American publishers. The final three-and-one-half paragraphs of the epilogue (918 words) are not included with this typescript; this missing portion constitutes four typewritten pages at Hilton's rate of roughly 215-230 words per typed page and may represent a final set of changes to the novel's coda delivered later under separate cover. Otherwise the typescript is entirely complete and corresponds to the printed text of the first edition. PROVENANCE: "THE PAPERS OF JAMES HILTON" - CHRISTIE'S LOS ANGELES, 18th NOVEMBER, 1999 (LOT 83). One of the most celebrated and best-loved novels of the 20th century, LOST HORIZON in 1933 introduced "Shangri-La" to the English language and remains the 20th century's most renowned fictional vision of modern utopia. Three known typescript drafts of the novel exist. The first and final draft ribbon copies used by Hilton's London publisher Macmillan are housed at Pennsylvania State University. This, the annotated carbon copy used by Hilton's American publisher Morrow - the one James Hilton retained for his own files and which was sold at his personal estate sale in 1999 - is the final corrected draft currently being offered for sale. There are some minor but fitfully significant textual differences between the first English Edition and the first U.S. edition. This is important because in 1939, LOST HORIZON was published by Pocket Books #1 (the first ever mass-market paperback), with the American text, thus causing the American text to evolve into the standard published version. The adaptation of the 1933 novel into the 1937 Frank Capra directed film starring Ronald Colman further enhanced LOST HORIZON's worldwide fame and the film has long been considered a cinematic classic. It received seven Oscar nominations (including Best Picture) and became the sixth highest grossing film of the 1930s. Its reputation, like that of the novel, continues to grow after almost 75 years. As the first and final Macmillan corrected drafts are locked in the vaults at Pennsylvania State University, this surviving typescript stands alone as ONE OF THE FEW GREAT LITERARY MANUSCRIPTS OF THE 20th CENTURY STILL REMAINING IN PRIVATE HANDS. Each of the 257 leaves has been placed in an archival Mylar sleeve and the entire manuscript is now housed in a custom-designed quarter-morocco slipcase. . Signed by Author. Original Manuscript. Unbound. Very Good.

        Advertising Poster for Mathis Cars

Mathis, (Strasbourg 1933 - (1)ff., folded into sixths. Printed in bright color on both sides, the poster depicts a variety of four- and six-cylinder cars available from the French automaker Mathis for the 1934 model year. These include the EMY4 and EMY6, available in the convertible St. Moritz, Deauville coupe, and four-door Dynamic. The text touts new "Quadruflex" independent suspension for safety and comfort. On the covers, when the poster is folded, are two bold, stylish Art Deco illustrations: a red convertible filled with five passengers touring a country road, and a sleek yellow sedan speeding along a coastal highway. Laid in is a sheet with the technical specifications for each model. The company, founded by Émile Mathis, produced automobiles in Strasbourg, Alsace between 1910 and 1950. After the first World War, Mathis was the number four automaker in France, competing directly with Citroën. A remarkably fine piece of ephemeral automobilia.

New York: Liveright Inc., [1933].. Medium brown cloth, lettered in silver. Cloth somewhat soiled and spotted around the lower edges and much of the spine, some occasional foxing and mild spotting; just a sound, tight copy, cloth in a facsimile dust jacket by a former owner. First edition, first printing, of the author's second novel. Only 800 copies of the initial printing of slightly in excess of 2000 copies had been released to the publisher by the printer when the Liveright firm went bankrupt. Publication was taken over by Harcourt, and the second and third issues from the first edition plates appeared under the imprint of Harcourt, and later, under the imprint of Greenberg. In point of fact, apart from the deluxe signed issue of THE DREAM LIFE OF BALSO SNELL, the primary form of this novel is West's scarcest published book. This is an interesting association, inscribed by West on the front free endsheet utilizing the nickname he used among friends: "For Bob Brown affectionately Pep West." The recipient was almost certainly novelist, poet, hack and miscellaneous writer Robert Carlton Brown, who had just returned to the US after his stint in Paris and unsuccessful effort to gain public interest in his Reading Machine. Brown was among the several distinguished contributors who wrote essays in praise ("Go West, Young Writer") of the novel for publication in the special issue of CONTEMPO published in July of 1933. West's prior acquaintance with and confidence in Brown is underlined by the fact that West had suggested Brown to CONTEMPO's editor as one of several potential contributors to the issue.         USSR in Construction

1933. TROSHIN, N. USSR in Construction. Sixteenth Year of the Revolution. No. 1. Folio, bound in original wrappers. Moscow: State Publishing Union of the RSFR, 1933. A fine copy of one of many monographic issues of this landmark periodical, devoted to the Soviet automobile industry. As Martin Parr says "from 1930-1940 URSS en Construction employed the best Soviet photo-journalists and graphic designers. Amongst the photographers were Max Alpert, Arkadi Shaikhet, Georgi Zeima, Boris Ignatovich, Semen Fridland and Georgi Shaikhet. Designers included Nikolai Troshin, El Lissitzky, Sophie Kueppers, Aleksandr Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova. All the visual strategies of the propaganda photobooks, designed by Lissitzky, Rodchenko and others -- the elaborate photomontages, innovative photography, fold-out pages, transparent overlays and so on -- were developed in URSS en Construction, one of the most beautifully produced magazines of the twentieth century." It was published in Russian, French, English and German. This is the English version. Slight wear from being folded, but overall in fine condition. Parr and Badger, The Photobook I, 148-149.

        Dolores, First Edition.

[Maastricht: A.A.M. Stols], 1933. One of only 50 copies of the first edition. 11 white line wood engravings of nudes by John Buckland Wright. First edition, being one of only 50 copies. Printed on japon. Pp.43. 25.5 x 16.5 cms, in the original blue paper wrappers with printed paper label on upper cover, untrimmed. Very slight wear to very top and bottom of spine but generally an extremely good copy. Housed in a blue cloth covered box. Dolores was privately printed in only 50 copies by A.A.M. Stols in Maastricht for Baron Emile van der Borch, and is very rarely seen on the market. It was comprised of 11 white line wood engravings, each of the engravings is a female nude. Buckland Wright worked further on the blocks after this edition was published and hence there is a second edition in 40 copies in which the images appear as silhouettes. Baron van der Borch was a prominent patron and admirer of Buckland Wright and he began commissioning work from him after seeing his work for the JBW Editions Cupid's Pastime which appeared much later in 1935. He comissioned Deux Poèmes and Dolores from him amongst several other items. Unfortunately the commissions were stopped by the Nazis who shot the Baron whilst in his early twenties.

Dinner at Eight (Original Film Program)

Los Angeles: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1933. Original American program for the 1933 film, with an original illustration by Hirschfeld and a striking photo of Jean Harlow on the front wrapper. Rarely in the 1930s was such excellent source material successfully combined with such stellar screenwriting, directing, and acting talent. Today the film plays equally well as both comedy and drama, and stands as a stark reflection of the upper class during the Depression. Marie Dressler was never more outrageous, Jean Harlow never more dizzy, Billie Burke never more confused, and John Barrymore never more drunk and suicidal. 9 x 12 inches, 16 pages, full color, saddle-stitched card stock. Wrappers Very Good plus with light rubbing, pages quite clean and supple.

1933 - FAULKNER, William. A Green Bough. New York: Harrison Smith and Robert Haas, 1933. Octavo, original tan cloth, mounted cover illustrations, uncut and unopened. $3000.Signed limited first edition of Faulkner’s second and last book of poetry, number 248 of 360 copies signed by him, of which only 350 copies were for sale, with two mounted cover illustrations and mounted frontispiece by Lynd Ward."A Green Bough came out at the end of April [1933] without much fanfare. It was published as a favor to Faulkner by Hal Smith, with illustrations by Lynd Ward. The volume contained 44 poems, most of which were written very early in Faulkner's career and reflect his close reading of Eliot, Housman, Swinburne and Keats. One can hardly imagine that the author of these intensely literary poems is the same man who wrote Sanctuary or Light in August. This was Faulkner's farewell to poetry, and, as such, it warrants a glance. Poetry was the schoolhouse of Faulkner's fiction… A Green Bough remains a fairly accomplished collection that demonstrates a firm grasp on the craft of poetry" (Parini, 177). Twenty-nine of the 44 poems in this collection were previously unpublished and nearly all were revised prior to the publication of this work. No slipcase or dust jacket issued with this signed limited edition. Brodsky 147. Peterson A15.1a. Light offsetting to front endpapers. An about-fine copy.       Nice, France, 1933. Folio. Text stitched and plates unbound as issued, contained within original publisher's cloth portfolio, upper cover with mounted plate and ties. Slight wear to extremities. Original tissue guards intact. Titles and first pages of introductions printed in red and black, half-titles, parallel text in English and French. Very good. Limited edition of 750 copies signed by the publisher. A rare part set of Chapman's survey of Pueblo Indian pottery, an art which was an integral part of a "native culture, unique among the patterns of the American Indian, [which] had its inception, and had reached its maturity, in the heart of the great southwestern area of the United States" (Introduction). This work is much scarcer than the same publisher's portfolio of Sioux Indian paintings which was issued several years later. The text gives a general introduction to the ceramic art of the Pueblo Indians of the southwestern United States, then concentrates on an overview of the pottery produced in the pueblos of Taos and Picuris, San Juan, Santa Clara, San Ildefonso, Tesuque, Cochiti, Santa Domingo and Santa Ana. This is followed by descriptions of the specific examples of the pottery shown in the plates. Szwedzicki also produced portfolios of Kiowa Indian art and Pueblo art, all published in the south of France in the 1930s.
