        Economic Foundations of Fascism

1933 - EINZIG, Paul. The Economic Foundations of Fascism. London: Macmillan, 1933. Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket. $1600.First edition of this important economic survey of early Italian Fascism, in original dust jacket. It would be an understatement to say that the publication of The Economic Foundations of Fascism had a mixed reception. While Foreign Affairs called it "a well-written survey by a prolific publicist" (Foreign Affairs), Einzig was promptly labeled "pro-fascist" or merely a fascist by many of his contemporaries. Austrian economist Arthur W. Marget wrote in the Journal of Political Economy, "This book is a thoroughly discreditable piece of journalistic hackwork, evidencing on almost every page a degree of naivete or of bias that is truly shocking." In the case of Einzig, everyone really was a critic, most of all his fellow economists. Whatever Einzig's personal beliefs, he has been largely vindicated with regard to the quality of his writing. He remains both a well-known financial journalist and an author who published more than 50 books on financial topics as well as a number of scholarly articles. Einzig did some of his best research during the long period leading up to the Second World War, reporting on Nazi Germany's exploitative exchange rate policies toward the East as well as eventually breaking the scandal of the Swiss National Bank's purchase of looted gold from the Reichsbank in 1943. He was, in short, neither Nazi nor Italian Fascist. This work is a valuable contemporary source that attempts to explain the inner workings of Fascism and what made it economy successful in the early years. Book very nearly fine, dust jacket near-fine with only light wear and toning to extremities. A handsome copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

This novel by Milne HAS A WONDERFUL 10 LINE INSCRIPTION FROM MILNE referring to the price of the book and how little of it trickles down to him: When I ponder On the baautie, a Four Days Wonder And realize That this copy, which only cost him 7/6 (net) Out of which, God willing, I may get as much as a whole shilling, Then I see that a Wonder Has been made about Four Days Wonder, And that in the case of a first class book like this, the real sin is In not offering it at a couple of guineas A.A.         Fruit of Islam Uniform

[Circa 1960s]. Complete dark blue uniform of a Fruit of Islam member including pants, jacket, and cap with "W.F.M." stitched on the jacket. Near fine with very slight fading on the shoulder patches and light wear at the collar. A 1960s-era uniform of a member of the Fruit of Islam, the paramilitary branch of the Nation of Islam. The all-male group was made up of the "fruit" of the larger "Nation" which was one of the original institutions in the community created before its founder, Wallace D. Fard, disappeared in 1933. They served as bodyguards for Elijah Mohammed until his death in 1975 when they were disbanded (they were later reconstituted by Louis Farrakhan in the 1980s). Seen as "brave fighters for Allah," the F.O.I.'s mission statement reads, "to teach civilization, and teach what they know to those who do not know." They are seen as "head of house: protection, provision, and maintenance of the Nation of Islam (all Original People). The F.O.I. are militant in the sense that our operations are done as a unit." According to their training manual: "The Fruit of Islam is the backbone of Islam, the militant part of Islam, the productive part of Islam, the men of Islam." They are trained to be "obedient, militant, humble, tolerant, courteous, honest, and dependable."An interesting item representing a branch of the African-American activist religious group. .

[.] Alle Soldaten mussten Bürger oder Untertanen von Bern sein [.]. [.] (Ph. Henri, Lemma Fremde Dienste, in: HLS). New Verse

Drummond -1939, London 1933 - 34 issues in 32. Small 8vo. Stiff paper wrappers. Red wraparound band to Auden double issue (26-27), perforated subscription forms to many numbers. Staples rusted, closed tear at spine of Issue 1, age-toning consistent with vintage. A near fine set. First edition. A COMPLETE RUN OF THIS HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL PERIODICAL. Geoffrey Grigson was just twenty-seven when he founded the bi-monthly New Verse, which for most of the 1930s remained the only British literary publication devoted solely to poetry. Grigson insisted on high literary standards from his contributors, but once these were met anyone was allowed in; New Verse was important because it was the house journal of no one faction. One of the most important contributors was W.H. Auden: the early issues helped launch him, later ones defended him. (The Auden double issue in this set retains its rare wraparound band). The combative Grigson was happy to criticise those he published, seeing such interventions as a legitimate part of the conversation, but saved most of his ammunition for New Verse's critics: the Sitwells were savaged, and Laura Riding was (entirely fairly) dismissed as 'Queen-bore among all the poets'. The open-door policy of New Verse made it the works canteen of the 1930s poetry factory, with Surrealists rubbing shoulders with Mass Observationists and Objectivists, and Auden and MacNeice establishing themselves at the top table as the decade progressed. The Second World War ended publication, but New Verse's influence reached far beyond 1939. A complete set, in near fine condition, of this landmark publication.

The Song of Songs (Original Film Program)

Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1933. Original film program for the 1933 film. With a striking image of Dietrich on the front wrapper, and much detail throughout regarding the production. Based on the novel by Hermann Suermann and the play by Edward Sheldon, about a country orphan who goes to Berlin to live with her aunt and who becomes the model for a handsome sculptor. Director Robert Mamoulian made the film simply and without artifice, a great departure from Dietrich's work with her Svengali, Josef von Sternberg. Filmed and released prior to the stringent Production Code, the filmmakers were allowed to display the full nude statue of Dietrich on the program's cover, for which she reportedly posed. An interesting example of Hollywood's attempts to recreate on US soil the Berlin that Marlene Dietrich came from, onscreen a beautiful place, in reality a city that ultimately rejected her. In addition to the photos and biographical information, the program contains a detailed and interesting essay to this effect, "Again a Gay and Friendly Berlin," with several photographs of cameras, Mamoulian, and Dietrich on the set. Two-color wrappers, 16 pages, saddle-stitched. Near Fine.
