História & conquista da Índia pelos Portugueses. Scriptores Rervm Lusitanarvm (Série A).

Coimbra, Imprensa da Universidade, 1924?1933. - 4 volumes. Folio (29.5 x 21.5 cm.), contemporary tan half sheep over faux crocodile paper boards (slight binding wear), spines gilt with raised bands in six compartments, two crimson morocco lettering and numbering pieces per volume in second and fourth compartments from head, gilt letter, decorated endleaves, top edges rouged, original printed wrappers bound in. Number 115 of 160 copies on "papel de linho numerados e rubricados." The signed justification appears on the verso of each title page. A very good set overall, internally very good to fine. xxxiv, 504 pp.; (2 ll.), 476 pp.; (2 ll.), 377 pp.; x, 681 pp. *** Excellent edition, the best and most complete, of this monumental history of Portuguese expansion overseas. Lopes de Castanheda (ca. 1500-1559) was recognized very early as an authoritative source; Diogo do Couto, another highly regarded historian of the Portuguese East, wrote, "This man (Castanheda) travelled about in India for nearly ten years, visiting most of the places there, and even reaching as far as the Moluccas. He described the things of that time very diligently ?." (translation from King Manuel). Aside from visiting the relevant sites, Lopes de Castanheda consulted documents and inscriptions, and spoke to many of those who took part in the Portuguese expansion. The @Historia, originally published in 8 books (Coimbra, 1551-61), represents twenty years of painstaking labor after he returned to Portugal around 1538. The ninth book, included with the rest of the work for the first time in volume four of this collection (pp. [525]?77; 593?4), was originally published at the Hague, edited by Father C. Wessels, S.J., in 1929. Lach points out, "It is remarkable, when we recollect that no previous writer had prepared a comprehensive narrative of the genesis of the Portuguese empire, that Castanheda was able, largely through his personal enterprise, to provide his own generation and posterity with a factual record, if not a brilliant narrative, of the Asiatic activities of the Portuguese ? And more than this, he was able through his personal observations to give greater substance to his account by describing in some detail the peculiar customs and techniques followed in India and thereby to make more explicit the cultural problems of Europeans in the East" (I, 188-89). Pages [595]?681 of volume IV comprise a valuable index of names and places. The @Historia was translated into more European languages than any other contemporary work on the subject, appearing in French, Spanish, English, Italian and German.*** Welsh 4702. Lach, @Asia in the Making of Europe I, 187-90. Cf.         Three Cities.

London: Victor Gollancz Ltd,, 1933. Translated by Edwin and Willa Muir. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in black. With the dust jacket. Spine sunned, a few faint spots to front board. An excellent copy in the dust jacket with a touch of chipping at head of spine. First UK edition, first impression, the Gollancz archive copy with their pencil-mark to the front panel of the dust jacket. Asch's magnum opus, "the first of his works to move far beyond shtetl and ghetto - though Jews continue to receive most of his attention", was originally published in Yiddish as Farn Mabul (Before the Flood, 1929-31). "Translated immediately into six languages, Three Cities was widely acclaimed … Asch's first bestseller in England and the United States assured the English translation of his later works and their reviews in important magazines". While the Muirs did not know Yiddish, they were able to prepare their own English translation from the German. (Siegel, The Controversial Sholem Asch, pp. 88 & 96). Highly uncommon with the dust jacket.

A fine copy in near fine pictorial dust jacket (printed on yellow. paper stock) with light wear at head of spine panel and corner tips,. short closed tear at top edge of rear panel, some light dust soiling,. and touch of sunning to spine panel. A nice copy of a book seldom. found in jacket. (#148037). First edition. Variant binding (probably the first) with spine panel stamped in gold rather than black. Posthumous literary miscellany, compiled and edited by John Gawsworth, that includes a selection of Middleton's short fiction that had not previously been collected in book form. "One of the most interesting stylists in British ghostly fiction, Middleton is rich and exuberant in his more traditional ghost stories (especially the humorous ones), lean and concise in his more original psychological tales. He was a sad, neglected figure, and is still not well known. He was also a tragic figure: he killed himself at the age of 29." - Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 3-170.       1933. London: Macmillan and Co., 1933. Original blind-stamped olive green cloth with gilt-decorated spine, with dust jacket. First Edition, which consisted of 2000 copies, of one of the great collections of poetry from Yeats's later years.         Marlborough: His Life and Times

1933 - CHURCHILL, Winston. Marlborough: His Life and Times. London: George G. Harrap, (1933-38). Four volumes. Octavo, original plum cloth, top edges gilt. $2000.First trade editions of this important biography, with hundreds of maps and plans (many folding), plates, and document facsimiles.Churchill wrote this history of his famous ancestor to refute earlier criticisms of Marlborough by Macaulay. “Though it was a commissioned work, Churchill would not have invested nearly a million words and ten years had it not had special significance for him. For he wrote about a man who was not only his ancestor, an invincible general, the first of what became the Spencer-Churchill dukes of Marlborough, and a maker of modern Britain, but also a supreme example of heroism in the two vocations which mainly interested Churchill and in which ultimate triumph seemed to have eluded himâ€" politics and war making” (Wiedhorn, 110). “It may be his greatest book. To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough. Only in its pages can one glean an understanding of the root of the speeches which inspired Britain to stand when she had little to stand with” (Langworth, 164). Issued simultaneously in a signed limited edition. Errata slips present in Volumes I-III, as called for. Without scarce original dust jackets. Cohen A97.1.a. Woods A40a. Langworth, 164-68. Interiors fine; cloth spines of Volumes Iâ€"III lightly and uniformly toned. A handsome set. Increasingly scarce. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
