On ancient Central-Asian tracks. Brief narrative of three expeditions in innermost Asia and North-western China.

London Macmillan 1933 - First edition. 8vo., xxiv, 342pp., 2 pages ads at end, 147 illustrations including some in colour, folding map, top edge gilt others uncut, original tan cloth gilt, gilt medallion to upper cover, light wear, corners bumped, a very good copy. A comprehensive summary of the results of the author's first three Central Asian expeditions and of his researches carried out during the years 1900-16. In order to avoid repetitions he sometimes includes in one chapter descriptions of a place, such as Niya or Lou-lan from two separate visits which results in some jumping around out of chronological order. He focuses on the most important archaeological excavations with less attention to some of the extended geographical and topographical explorations. Yakushi S723a. The original pen and ink and watercolor drawing by Rackham, 14.25 x 10.25 ins., matted and framed, in perfect condition. The full-size original watercolor drawing for the illustration “White and golden Lizzie stood” -- one of Rackham’s most evocative and startling illustrations with every feature that Rackham was famous for -- the amazing detail, half real half fantastic creatures, trees with faces and limbs, a beautiful Pre-Raphaelite girl with golden hair, all composed into a painting of the highest quality, in perfect condition. This picture was purchased from Rackham in 1935 and has never been on the market. It is the original for the book and not a recreation by Rackham (as many of his drawings are) of one of his famous images.

        The Wind in the Willows

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. Shepard, E. H. . Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) was an English writer; this is probably his most famous novel, a classic of children literature. It concerns the escapades of four animal friends who live along a river in the English countryside - Toad, Mole, Rat, and Badger. This is a children's story that is as much for adults as children. It was originally published in 1908 and again in 1913. The sale item shows 1933 on the title page as well as the copyright page and is probably the first American edition. Blue cloth binding with gold lettering on spine and three gold cartoons on front board. Binding tight but slightly cocked, with bumping at top and bottom of spine plus a bit of sunning on the spine. Surprisingly there is no foxing anywhere. Bright yellow end pages with illustration of the Willows neighborhood. Only flaw is the dedication to the previous owner on front free end page. Unclipped dust jacket ($1.00) is sunned on spine, chipped at top and bottom of spine, and worn at all extremities but there are no tears. This volume is in very good shape for the age. 12 mo (6.75 to 7.75 inches). 312 pages. Now Brodart covered to prevent further deterioration.

The Old Gang and the New Gang.

London: Desmond Harmsworth,, 1933. Octavo. Original white and black cloth, title to spine black. With the dust jacket. Housed in a grey solander box. Cloth a little toned to spine and board edges; an excellent copy in the jacket with toned spine and extremities. First edition, first impression. A superb presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his wife, "To my darling wife geehos, 1933. Wyndham Lewis." Gladys Anne Hoskins (1900-1979) and Lewis were married in 1930, though he concealed this fact from his friends for much of the 1930s. In 1939 Lewis wrote to the wife of his friend John Rothenstein, explaining that: "my wife and I were most orthodoxly spliced a long time ago?I have found myself rather overshadowed by [her]?and she has been forced a little into the fray ? we have no children. She is blonde, she tends to put on fat, her mother was German, her father a good British farmer?she has ridden all over the Atlas on a mule and is a great reader of my books; but you can see she is a wife in a thousand." One of 1,000 copies printed.

Three Publicity Stills from the Set of the 1933 Film Laughter in Hell

Universal 1933 - Hollywood: [NP] 1933. Photographer unknown. Three original 8" x 10" black-and-white publicity photos taken on the Universal City set of the 1933 chain-gang drama film Laughter in Hell. Blue paper hand-typed descriptions mounted on verso of each photo; apparently for newspaper write-ups. Very Good overall. A few pieces of masking tape on verso, a few stains and some fairly light edge wear.Photo #1 (going from left to right in main product photo) shows Jim Tully, Irish-American ex-hobo-and-pugilist author of the book on which the film was based, hanging with star Pat O'Brien, known at the time as "Hollywood's Irishman in Residence." #2 shows former child-actor Tom Brown in stripes handling a pick on the set while background extras stare at the camera. "Take your pick" the jauntily-phrased verso caption begins.Photo #3 is the stand-out of the bunch, showcasing two lynched African-American convicts surrounded by their mourning comrades. As the verso caption states: "Just a good old fashioned lynching party-- and the honored guests are Director Edward Cahn, Pat O'Brien, Jim Tully and Clarence Muse. Snapped on the set of Universal's chain gang drama, 'Laughter in Hell' where the author of the human screenplay visited the actors recently." An institutional example of this photo appeared in Bauer and Dawidziak's recent Tully biography.A rare set of publicity stills from a pre-code chain-gang film with a frank depiction of the Southern racism and a broken criminal justice system that was presumed lost until recently.

        Imitation of Life

Harper & Brothers, New York 1933 - First edition. Fine in red cloth boards with fresh paper labels on the spine and front board in very good dust jacket with a few scattered spots on the front panel, some sunning to the spine, and light wear at the edges with a few nicks. A novel by a white women about two single mothers, one white and one black, who create a successful restaurant franchise together but through their daughters suffer at the hands racial prejudice and tragic choices. The novel was filmed twice, first in 1934 with Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers, and again in 1959 with Lana Turner and Juanita Moore. The first film was nominated for Best Picture and named to the National Film Registry in 2005, while the Douglas Sirk remake is now considered a classic of 1950s cinema and one of the German director's masterpieces. Recounts the adventures and misadventreus of a group of undergraduates from the University of Wisconsin and Oxford University seeking a route to Wild Horse Mesa in southeastern Utah. This signed to Mildred Baker who made 5 trips to Canyon Country in the 1930's creating elaborate scrapbooks (now at the Huntington) documenting her adventures. Florence Huck joined Baker on at least one of these trips (possibly with Kluckhohn too? ) and inscribed and designed a beautiful calligraphic note on the first free endpaper. Also signed by the bookbinder John Grabau, a noted bookbinder and friend of Baker's. Baker and Huck signed the register at Rainbow bridge as the 1488th and 1489th non-native to visit this iconic Utah landmark.         Les aspects de Lyon

        La casa all'italiana

Edizioni Domus, 1933. In 16, pp. 158 + (4). ITA

        War Memoirs.

London: Ivor Nicholson and Watson, 1933.. First Edition, First Impression. 6 volume. Large Octavo. Publisher's dark blue cloth with gilt titles to spines, facsimile signature of the author stamped in gilt to lower corner of uppers; top edges tinted blue. A tight, bright set, very lightly rubbed. "... As Chancellor of the Exchequer (1908?1915), Lloyd George was a key figure in the introduction of many reforms which laid the foundations of the modern welfare state. His most important role came as the highly energetic Prime Minister of the Wartime Coalition Government (1916?22), during and immediately after the First World War. He was a major player at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 that reordered Europe after the defeat of Germany in the Great War. He arguably made a greater impact on British public life than any other 20th-century leader, thanks to his pre-war introduction of Britain's social welfare system, his leadership in winning the war, his post-war role in reshaping Europe and his partitioning Ireland (between the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland which remained part of the UK)...

333 - 335; Comanducci, I pittori italiani dell'Ottocento, pag. 609.

Three Publicity Stills from the Set of the 1933 Film Laughter in Hell

Hollywood, CA: Universal, 1933. Very Good. Hollywood: [NP] 1933.

Just then the door opened, and a very old woman walking upon crutches came out

1933. Hansel and Grethel"RACKHAM, Arthur, artist. "Just then the door opened, and a very old woman walking upon crutches came out" [Sussex, 1933]. Original pen-and-ink drawing, signed "A Rackham" on lower left-hand corner, for the full-page drawing on page 275 in the The Arthur Rackham Fairy Book. London: George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd. [1933]. Image size: 9 5/8 x 6 7/8 inches: 244 x 175 mm. Matted, framed and glazed. "We will go in there," said Hansel, "and have a glorious feast. I will eat a piece of the roof, and you can eat the window. Will they not be sweet?" So Hansel reached up and broke a piece off the roof, in order to see how it tasted; while Grethel stepped up to the window and began to bite it. Then a sweet voice called out in the room, "Tip-tap, tip-tap, who raps at my door?" and the children answered, "The wind, the wind, the child of heaven"; and they went on eating without interruption. Hansel thought the roof tasted very nice, and so he tore off a great piece, while Grethel broke a large round pane out of the window, and sat down quite contentedly. Just then the door opened, and a very old woman walking upon crutches came out. Hansel and Grethel were so frightened that they let fall what was in their hands; but the old woman, nodding her head, said, "Ah, you dear children, what has brought you here? Come in and stop with me, and no harm shall befall you." So saying she took them both by the hand, and led them into her cottage."The old woman, leaning on a crutch and wearing a tall conical black hat is the stereotypical witch. She has long knobbly fingers, a big hook nose and is hunched over on her crutch. The way that Rackham has drawn her, although she is smiling a toothy grin, you just know that no-one should trust her. Hansel and Grethel are looking up at her, having just dropped pieces of her gingerbread house on the ground in fright - a piece of the window pane is missing.Although this drawing is only in pen and ink with no color, there is a depth of emotion that only Rackham can convey and it tells the story so simply and yet so effectively. He shows his true genius in just a few strokes of his pen.
