Crawford's Biscuits are Good Biscuits 1934

William Crawford & Sons Ltd., Edinburgh, Liverpool and London 1933 - A most unusual trade catalogue combined with a diary and blotter/desk accessory! Closed, oblong, 27 by 30 cm, and when the panels are opened wide, 60 cm wide. This was surely intended as a promotional tool in which the attractive catalogue was part and parcel with a freebie likely to be used and valued by the wholesale customer, who in this case would have been grocers and costermongers. The handsome commercial folio fits into the tradition of English biscuit makers who produced fine collectable tins which were sometimes as treasured as their delectable products. The folio opens from the center, with four separate panes then revealed. To the left are calendars for 1934 and 1935. Underneath the 1935 calendar one finds the trade catalogue, full of colorized photographs of the company's biscuits and packaging. This is paginated for 28 pages. The panels to the right hold the diary and a memoranda sheet. The front of the diary has several pages devoted to postal rates, other practical information, and a glossary of French dishes with English meanings. The blotter comes with a small stack of blotter paper, none of which was ever used, and each of these sheets has some pricing by weight data. The blotter looks as if it has never been used -- we have never seen one in such pristine condition before. Also included is the envelope in which it came -- this has creases and wear, but is a remarkable relic nonetheless. Grained Leatherette, with cloth spines or sides [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Fruit of Islam Uniform

[Circa 1960s]. Complete dark blue uniform of a Fruit of Islam member including pants, jacket, and cap with "W.F.M." stitched on the jacket. Near fine with very slight fading on the shoulder patches and light wear at the collar. A 1960s-era uniform of a member of the Fruit of Islam, the paramilitary branch of the Nation of Islam. The all-male group was made up of the "fruit" of the larger "Nation" which was one of the original institutions in the community created before its founder, Wallace D. Fard, disappeared in 1933. They served as bodyguards for Elijah Mohammed until his death in 1975 when they were disbanded (they were later reconstituted by Louis Farrakhan in the 1980s). Seen as "brave fighters for Allah," the F.O.I.'s mission statement reads, "to teach civilization, and teach what they know to those who do not know." They are seen as "head of house: protection, provision, and maintenance of the Nation of Islam (all Original People). The F.O.I. are militant in the sense that our operations are done as a unit." According to their training manual: "The Fruit of Islam is the backbone of Islam, the militant part of Islam, the productive part of Islam, the men of Islam." They are trained to be "obedient, militant, humble, tolerant, courteous, honest, and dependable."An interesting item representing a branch of the African-American activist religious group. .

        God Rest You Merry Gentlemen

New York: House of Books, Ltd., , 1933. Small square octavo (18 pp.). Original red cloth, gilt lettered on spine and front cover. Title page printed in red & black. Spine sunned, mottled staining to covers, general paper toning. First and limited edition, number 63 of 300 copies. Harold Bloom comments that "the Hemingway story that wounds me most is... 'God Rest You Merry Gentlemen,' which is almost entirely dialogue... we are in Kansas City on Christmas Day, and listening to the conversation between two physicians: the incompetent Doctor Wilcox... and the mordant Doc Fischer, who begins by quoting his coreligionist Shylock: 'What news along the Rialto?' The news is very bad, as we learn soon enough: a boy of about sixteen, obsessed with purity, had come into the hospital to ask for castration. Turned away, he had mutilated himself with a razor, and will probably die from loss of blood" (How to Read and Why, 2001, pp. 47-48).

New York: Farrar & Rinehart. Very Good+ in Good dj. (c.1933). 4th printing. Hardcover. [spine slightly turned, minor soiling to covers and edges of text block, bottom front corner lightly bumped, a touch of fraying at bottom extremities, small circular "W" stamped on ffep (a private ownership mark), a couple of code numbers stamped in blue ink on rear fep; jacket moderately edgeworn, with an unfortunately large chip at top of spine, extending from the front hinge across the spine to about 1-1/4" into the rear panel (and taking a good part of the spine title with it), also another thumnail-size chip at top of rear panel]. Horror tale of "one who was a man by day but a ravenous beast by night, a creature from the hideous depths of demonology," set in 19th-century France. Undoubtedly the best-known novel by Endore, a sometime-screenwriter who was blacklisted in the 1950s, it occupies something of the same position in werewolf literature as does Stoker's "Dracula" in the vampire genre -- and in fact it explicitly makes a bid to trump the earlier book in its jacket blurb: "Dracula was a vampire -- but Bertrand was a werewolf!" The book served as the basis of the 1961 Hammer film CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF (with Oliver Reed in his hairiest role), which was in turn remade (without attribution to the novel) as LEGEND OF THE WEREWOLF in 1975. According to a slug at the top of the front jacket flap, the book was already into its "Fourth Large Printing in Ten Days" -- but fourth printing notwithstanding, examples of the Farrar & Rinehart dust jacket are very very (very) scarce.         Typed manuscripts on Degas’s “Mimesis”

(1933) . Four page with numerous corrections. [Mimesis is a chapter from Degas Danse Dessin (published Paris: Gallimard 1938)]. The manuscript was used for the final version of the book, but it has many changes including typed overstrikes and the crossing out of words and entire sentences that do not appear in the final version. Over 30 changes, some grammatical and stylistic, but several complete sentences are deleted and new thoughts composed. Quarto. Bound in red cloth, paper label. 4p (numbered M1- M4) Bound in is a note signed “P Valery” to collector Andre Schück conveying the manuscript, with envelope. This small but important section of Valery’s Degas Danse Dessins describes Degas’ way of seeing the female form. To Valery, Degas drew the “l’animal féminin” in different attitudes of her daily life: tying a ballet shoe or ironing a blouse, or at the bath in order to show the entire system of her living mechanism with the clarity of a facial expression: “grimacer comme un visage.” Degas sought a “ligne unique qui détermine une figure” one not seen in classical art or by any artist before him. Valery then recounts a wonderful anecdote told to him by Degas: Degas describes his evening habit of riding on an open deck of a bus all across Paris. On one occasion, Degas carefully observes a working woman seated across from him going through her precise ritual of precautions and movements in the arrangement of her gloves, her skirt, her expression, her entire person in a very personal routine until she arrives at a “nouvel état d’équilibre apparament stable, mais qui ne dure qu’un moment..” The art historian Douglas Cooper writes that the reader of Valéry’s writings will find in Degas Danse Dessin an “impressive, tortuous and allusive piece of writing...where we are given glimpses of Degas the man” (and also of Valery the writer) (Cooper xxxiii-iv). Ref: (Cooper): Degas, Manet, Morisot. Translated by David Paul. With an introduction by Douglas Cooper.[New York] : Pantheon Books, [1960]; Provenance: Andre Schück’s library was sold in three sales in Paris in 1986, 1987,-2005: To an American collector. Valery manuscripts rarely appear on the market.
