Three Publicity Stills from the Set of the 1933 Film Laughter in Hell

Hollywood, CA: Universal, 1933. Very Good. Hollywood: [NP] 1933. Photographer unknown. Three original 8" x 10" black-and-white publicity photos taken on the Universal City set of the 1933 chain-gang drama film Laughter in Hell. Blue paper hand-typed descriptions mounted on verso of each photo; apparently for newspaper write-ups. Very Good overall. A few pieces of masking tape on verso, a few stains and some fairly light edge wear.Photo #1 (going from left to right in main product photo) shows Jim Tully, Irish-American ex-hobo-and-pugilist author of the book on which the film was based, hanging with star Pat O'Brien, known at the time as "Hollywood's Irishman in Residence." #2 shows former child-actor Tom Brown in stripes handling a pick on the set while background extras stare at the camera. "Take your pick" the jauntily-phrased verso caption begins.Photo #3 is the stand-out of the bunch, showcasing two lynched African-American convicts surrounded by their mourning comrades. As the verso caption states: "Just a good old fashioned lynching party-- and the honored guests are Director Edward Cahn, Pat O'Brien, Jim Tully and Clarence Muse. Snapped on the set of Universal's chain gang drama, 'Laughter in Hell' where the author of the human screenplay visited the actors recently." An institutional example of this photo appeared in Bauer and Dawidziak's recent Tully biography.A rare set of publicity stills from a pre-code chain-gang film with a frank depiction of the Southern racism and a broken criminal justice system that was presumed lost until recently.

        Roll, Jordan, Roll.

New York: Robert O. Ballou,, 1933. Octavo. Original linen-backed brown boards, device in blind to front board, titles to spine gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, brown textured endpapers. With the original matching card slipcase. With 90 full-page copper plate photogravure illustrations by Ulmann. Spine just a little sunned and spotted, all but 2 plain tissue guards lacking (felicitously, since if left in they stain the plates), one plate a touch browned, one or two minor stains to the odd page. An exceptional copy in the publisher's scarce card slipcase, that is split at top edge. First edition, signed limited issue. Number 48 of 350 copies signed by the author and photographer, and printed on large paper and specially bound with 90 images, instead of the 70 included in the trade issue. This copy is accompanied by the gravure signed by Ulmann, of the plate on p. 31, which, although not called for in the colophon, was supposed to be included. Of the few copies we have seen which retain the slipcase, about half have evidence of water damage and give credence to the widely held idea that a flood in the photographer's storeroom destroyed many copies. This collaboration by Ullmann and Peterkin focuses on the lives of second- and third-generation "free blacks" in the Gullah region of South Carolina. "Peterkin, a popular novelist who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1929, was born in South Carolina and raised by a black nursemaid who taught her the Gullah dialect before she learned standard English. She married the heir to Lang Syne, one of the state's richest plantations, which became the setting for Roll, Jordan, Roll" (Roth, 101 Books).

The Brown Book of the Hitler Terror and the Burning of the Reichstag

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1933. First Edition Thus. Hardcover Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 348 pages. Perhaps the first anti-Nazi expose for non-Germans, it was published as Hitler rose to power to describe the 'Nazi Menace' and 'what the Hitler government has done since assuming office and what Hitlerism stands for' -- from the jacket flaps. Published simultaneously in several languages, with speculated involvement of Albert Einstein who was on the steering committee, though he denied knowledge of the project prior to its publication. First American edition. Brown cloth with black-and-white swastikas on spine and cover; front cover dinged on bottom edge and cloth faded at spine ends. This copy with two unclipped dust jackets, both issued by Knopf, both with English text. One jacket, based on the German original designed by John Heartfield, is chipped at the edges and corners, thus very good. The second jacket is chipped with some loss to spine ends, else very good. Very scarce in either jacket.

Thunder Over Mexico [Que Viva Mexico] (Collection of 7 original photographs from the 1933 film)

Los Angeles, CA: Principal Distributing Corporation, 1933. Collection of seven vintage black-and-white single weight studio still photographs from the US release of the 1933 film. Eisenstein had spent many frustrating months in Hollywood, ending with a failed attempt to adapt Dreiser's "An American Tragedy." With backing from avowed socialist Upton Sinclair, Eisenstein left Hollywood to create what would have been his epic about life in Mexico, "Que viva México." The film was intended to be an episodic study of Mexico's durable ethnography and symbols against the backdrop of its colonial history from the ancient Mayans to the 1910 revolution. Cinematographer Euduard Tisse shot the film in 1931 and 1932, intending to divide the narrative into four segments (which he called "novels"), "Sandunga," "Fiesta," "Maguey," and "Soldadera." Upon completion of filming, Eisenstein sent the footage to Hollywood for processing, but political and economic barriers prevented him from returning even to edit the film. In the wake of Eisenstein' forced departure, two films utilizing the film footage were made with Upton Sinclair's permission: "Thunder over Mexico" (1933, edited by Sol Lesser) and "Time in the Sun" (1940, edited by Mary Seton). Upton Sinclair subsequently deposited the unedited materials of the film in the 1950s with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Jay Leyda's subsequent work to make the footage accessible has resulted in the footage having been preserved for nearly 80 years for future study and reconstruction. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Near Fine. Complete collation details available on request.

        Paris de Nuit

Paris: Edition Arts et Métiers Graphiques,, 1933. Quarto. Spiral bound photographic wrappers, titles to front cover in red. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box, titles to spine in red, with chemise. Illustrated with 64 full page gravure plates. Slight wear to several punch holes, some minor rubbing but a superior copy of a notoriously vulnerable book. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author at the start of the introduction, "à Pierre Cot, Voici un joli decor pour La Patriouille etc... (Chut! Chut! Chut!) tres fideliement P. Morand Paris, fev. 32". Pasted below this is a small photograph of Brassaï in later life which probably relates to the photographer's subsequent inscription on the following leaves where he writes, "Pour Christian-Vincent Matarasso ce Paris de Nuit perdu et retrouve avec toute ma sympathie Brassai Ete Village le 7 mai 1965". Pierre Cot was a politician who was central to the establishing of the French Air Force and later of Air France. The mildly cryptic inscription alludes, we believe, to the French equivalent of Britain's Red Arrows, a display wing of the air force. The Morand?Brassai collaboration remains one of the most influential of all photobooks. It was groundbreaking both in its stark realism and, more importantly, conceptually. From Brandt's Night in London to Bill Owen's A Day Off, photographers have been inspired by the conceit of the captured moment as mosaic. Signed copies of this work are rare, copies inscribed by both author and photographer rarer still.

        Signed Photograph

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Highly uncommon original oblong sepia doubleweight photograph of the important String Quartet, signed by Alphonse Onnou (violin), Laurent Halleux (violin), Germain Prévost (viola) and Robert Maas (cello).  Signed by each in the lower blank margin, inscribed at the head to violinist Adele Bucklin, "in memory of some quartet lessons / friendly souvenir...30 July, 1933." Small mounting stains to upper corners, else fine. 25 x 20 cm. The only signed photograph of the historic ensemble that we've ever encountered on the market.<br style="">The Pro Arte Quartet was founded in 1911-12 by students at the Brussels Conservatory. Violinist Alphonse Onnou was the leader, and the other founding members included Laurent Halleux (violin), Germain Prévost (viola), and Fernand Auguste Lemaire ('cello). The quartet made its début in Brussels in 1913 and soon became known as an exponent of modern music. In 1918 Fernand Quinet became the cellist, but in 1921 he was replaced by Robert Maas. That year, with the aid of Paul Collaer and Arthur Prévost, the Pro Arte Concerts began, in which performances were given of new works by, among others, Bartók (whose Fourth Quartet is dedicated to the Pro Arte), Casella, Honegger, Martin, Milhaud and Rieti. The quartet performed with great success at the 1923 ISCM Festival in Salzburg, and the same year played new works commissioned by Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge at a concert in Rome. After touring Europe the quartet visited England for the first time in 1925; subsequent visits to England included annual series of a week's performances in Cambridge (1932â??8).  In 1932 the quartet was granted the title Quatuor de la Cour de Belgique, in recognition of its services to Belgian music.<br style=""><br style="">The Pro Arte played their American debut in 1926, performing at the inauguration of the Hall of Music in the Library of Congress, Washington, DC.  They returned for thirty tours to the United States,  as well as a tour of Canada, often under the auspices of the noted patron of chamber music, Mrs. Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge. Their first visit to Madison was in 1938, where, two years later, the musicians were stranded  by Hitler's invasion of Belgium and the outbreak of World War II. Following their concert on campus, the University of Wisconsin chancellor offered a permanent home to the quartet â?? it was the first such residency ever in a major American university, and became the model on which many other similar arrangements were developed at other institutions. Onnou died in 1940, but the quartet continued until 1947 as quartet-in-residence at Wisconsin University, led first by Antonio Brosa and from 1944 by Rudolf Kolisch. <br style="">

Marlborough: His Life and Times, full set of four British first edition, first printings in dust jackets

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1933. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a superior full set of four British first edition, first printings in first printing dust jackets. Winston Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. The final volume was published on the eve of the Second World War in 1938. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." The work was very well received, both critically and aesthetically. The first edition is a physically impressive production. The books measure 9.25 x 6.25 inches and are roughly 2 inches thick. Each is bound in plum cloth with beveled edges, the Marlborough coat of arms gilt on the front cover, and a gilt top edge. Moreover, each volume is profusely illustrated. Unfortunately, the plum cloth binding of Volumes I-III proved highly susceptible to sun fading. (A different, more fade-resistant dye was used in Volume IV.) Without the dust jackets, Volumes I-III are nearly always spine faded and jacketed first editions are now scarce. Particularly scarce are first printing dust jackets for Volumes I & II. We caution collectors to be wary of price-clipped dust jackets, as later impression Volume I & II dust jackets state either "2nd Impression" or "3rd Impression" printed next to the price on the lower front flap. No such problem applies to Volumes III & IV, which each had only a single printing.  Additionally, the dust jackets themselves proved highly susceptible to soiling and toning. This full, four-volume British first edition set is collector-worthy and increasingly scarce thus, very good plus or better first printing volumes in very good or better unclipped first printing dust jackets. The bindings are square, clean, bright, and tight with the only hints of sunning confined to the extreme spine ends where a little sun slipped past the jacket edges. The contents are bright and crisp. Spotting is modest for the edition, confined to page edges and the first and final pages of Vol. III. The only previous ownership marks are a brief inked gift inscription on the Vol. II front free endpaper and an owner name and date (?3/10/38? ? the month after publication) on the Vol. IV front pastedown. Shelf presentation is quite good for the edition. All four dust jackets are complete apart from fractional chipping to spine ends and corners. We note uniform, moderate toning to the jacket spines and occasional light soiling. All four dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers.         Archive - Portfolio of Theatre Set Director's Original Artwork - Watercolours & Manuscript Drawings

Germany, 1933. Innsbruck, Munich, 1933-1976. Archive of 34 watercolours, manuscript sketch drawings and photographs pertaining to theatre sets designed from 1933-1944 by the highly respected German set director at Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck - Hans Siegert. Together with 35 original typescript articles published by him in German film magazines from 1955-1976 after he had become a film producer. All text is in German. Very good condition. Hans Siegert (1910-1983) was a set designer and film director. He studied with German illustrator and print maker Emil Preetorius. Siegert is especially remembered for his excellent stage designs created for the Innsbruck theater from 1938 to 1944 when he was Set Director. Several of these are represented here in his original artwork, and in additional photographs of his artwork. Together with his wife Irma, he also painted cinema posters and giant outdoor advertising for movie theaters. Around 1955 he became a film director. He was involved in numerous film productions and earned several awards. Hans and his wife Irma were both from Munich. [At the time of Siegert drawings and watercolours the theatre was called the Royal Bavarian Court National Theatre. In 1945, it was renamed the Tiroler Landestheater (Tyrolean State Theatre).] The archive includes the following: Hans Siegert's large portfolio briefcase containing thirty-four (34) original watercolour paintings on paper, each illustrating a specific theatre set or backdrop designed by him, and 1 collage of watercolour and print material. Each mounted to a paper border, several of which are signed in the original by the artist, several also captioned, and measuring approximately 50 x 35 cm, one being smaller in size. Pin holes to corners suggest that several of these were mounted to Siegert's office walls. The black leather portfolio measures 51 x 37 cm. An art book profusely utilized in 1933, each page abounding with lively pencil sketches, ink drawings, watercolour scenes, poster art templates, manuscript notes, and a scant few photographs and newspaper clippings incorporated into some manuscript drawings. A fascinating volume, these pages illustrate the busy and sedulous mind of an artistic creator, planning various ethnic costume, theatre and film characters, and elaborate sets relating to specific theatrical plays. Replete with scratch notes and doodles, we find a dramatic watercolour depiction of South Tyrolean film producer and actor Luis Trenker, and pencil sketches of the Sahara Palace Hotel in Marrakech, Morocco. 8vo. 92 pages of illustrations. Album of photographs, featuring two (2) original photographs of Hans Siegert diligently planning and designing sets and props, fifty-two (52) photographs of paintings he made for the theatrical sets designed for performances the Innsbruck theatre from 1938-1944, each of the latter captioned and dated in typescript, and eight (8) miniature photographs of prepared stages. Photographs measure between 17 x 12 cm and 3,5 x 2 cm (most measuring approximately 12 x 8cm). Green coil album from the 1970s. 35 original typescript articles published by Hans Siegert in two Munich based magazines from 1955 to 1976, "Der Film Kreis" [The Film Circle] and Film und Ton Magazine [Film and Sound Magazine]. 8vo. Contained in the covers of a 1955 issue of Der Film Kreis. Autobiographical entertaining screenplay script for a short film titled "Der Dichter und die Bastlerin," the characters being Hans Siegert himself as a film producer, his wife Irma as herself, and a studio owner. 8vo. 19 pages typed and dated 1974 in manuscript to last leaf, contained in string-tied in boards titled and illustrated to front. A succinct biographical sketch of Siegert's career, and then recent shift from theatre to film, being an article clipped from the March 1956 issue of "Jazz Podium" - a German magazine founded in Vienna in 1952. Excerpt from the article: "Aufgrund dieser vielen filme und Auszeichnungen wurde Hans Siegert sehr bald mit Auftràgen für Lehr-,Werbe- und Dokumentarfilme verschiedenster Art betraut." [Based on his many movies and awards, Hans Siegert was readily entrusted with lectures, advertising and documentaries of various kinds.] Illustrating his tireless endeavours and spectacular projects at the Innsbruck theatre, in 1944 alone, Siegert designed sets and backdrops for the following performances: Friedrich Schiller's bourgeois tragedy "Trauerspiel Kabale" [Intrigue and Love], reported by Heinz Cornel Piper on January 17, 1944, as having scenery by Hans Siegert which possessed in itself a magical effect. A performance by Gisa Ott for which Siegert's backdrops have been described as evocative and artistic, creating a special emphasis. For "Hamlet" Siegert skillfully presented the essence of tragedy through simplified, artistic, tasteful decorations amidst an open, darkened scene. For Isa Roland and Gustl Pretsch as old pastoral couple, Hans Ulrich Bach, and others as Grand Duke and Postilion, he created a most lively stage, especially for the Sesenheimer songs by Goethe. A unique office setting design for the dynamic comedic act "Lisa benimm Dich!" [Lisa behave yourself!] . Very Good.

ARCHIVE of LETTERS by GERMAN JEWS from WWI to post WWII, some MURDERED by NAZIS - Jewish Life in Germany

1933. 1933. ARCHIVE of LETTERS from GERMAN JEWS to two JEWISH RELATIVES who left GERMANY and ended up in VALLEJO, CALIFORNIA. Among the letters are some DOCUMENTS, PHOTOGRAPHS, and related ephemera. From the estate of two JEWS that lived in VALLEJO California, GUSTAVE ROSENBERG (aka Gustav or Gus Rosenberg) and KURT ROSEDALE (nee Kurt Rosenthal). GUSTAVE ROSENBERG emigrated from GERMANY to the UNITED STATES in the early 20th century. He left behind most of his relatives and ended up in Vallejo where he became a part owner of LEVEE'S DEPARTMENT STORE in Vallejo, California. Gustave Rosenberg sent money to support his relatives in Germany, and tried, unsuccessfully, to buy his brother's way out of Germany after the Nazis took power. KURT ROSEDALE was KURT ROSENTHAL until he changed his name after fleeing Dortmund, Germany in 1933. He also ended up in Vallejo, leaving behind his relatives. INCLUDED IN THE ARCHIVES are KURT ROSENTHAL'S GERMAN PASSPORT DOCUMENTING HIS 1933-1934 ESCAPE FROM GERMANY, and a later AMERICAN NEWSPAPER ARTICLE THAT DETAILS HIS ESCAPE. His German passport contains some German Police Stamps from 1933, a 1934 Amsterdam stamp authorizing his departure for San Francisco, and several 1934 American Consul of Rotterdam stamps. The letters are mostly from the period pre World War I through post World War II. Some were opened by censors, as noted on the envelopes. Many of the letters are from Jewish Relatives of Rosenberg and Rosenthal (Rosedale) who were KILLED BY THE NAZIS in the HOLOCAUST, including: ADOLF ROSENBERG of WORMS, GERMANY, Brother of Gustave Rosenberg (his death is documented on the site DIE WORMSER JUDEN 1933-1945 along with a mention of his brother, Gustav Rosenberg, who "lived in the U.S. and sent him money"); ALFRED FRANK of HILDESHEIM, GERMANY; GEORG ROSENBERG and ROSEL MULLER ROSENBERG of FULDA, GERMANY (Georg Rosenberg, b. 19 Sep 1879, Hildesheim, Germany d. 12 Aug 1942, Lodz Ghetto, age 62 years; Rosel Mueller, b. 25 May 1894, Gottingen, d. 10 Mar 1939, Frankfurt, Germany, age 44 years); JULIUS ROSENTHAL of DORTMUND, GERMANY (Born 04. 07. 1870, Last residence before deportation: Dortmund , Transport X/1, no. 288 30. 07. 1942, Dortmund > Terez?n; Transport Bq, no. 986 23. 09. 1942, Terez?n > Treblinka, Murdered). There are others I have not been able to determine one way or the other. Almost ALL the LETTERS are HANDWRITTEN in GERMAN. They are full of information about living as a JEW in GERMANY in the period Pre World War I until the NAZI takeover of Germany. Then came the HOLOCAUST, when, sadly and horribly, most of the letters stop. There are also some items related to Gustave Rosenberg and Kurt Rosedale in Vallejo, including photos of family and early Vallejo and LEVEE'S Department store, a few letters from American friends, etc. There are well over 200 individual items, mostly letters from relatives in Germany (at least 150), but also some important documents, including the German Passport of Kurt Rosenthal, an address book of Gustave Rosenberg, 1941 documents regarding using Cuba as a port of entry for Jewish refugees, a group of V'Mails to PFC Rosedale (these in English), etc. The letters and documents relating to Gustave Rosenberg's attempts to find a way to get his brother Adolf Rosenberg out of Germany are especially touching. His brother was reportedly on a waiting list to enter the U.S. when he disappeared and most certainly murdered by the Nazis. Generally GOOD condition, the letters all have folds, creases, and wear from handling; the passport is lacking its rear cover and has a disbound front cover; there is toning to the items that tone; many envelopes were somewhat roughly opened; nonetheless, despite the normal wear and tear, the items are clean with writing that is clear. An important archive that belongs in the category of Never Forget. Genre: Judaica, Holocaust, German Jews, Murdered Jews, Survivors. Good
