THE FARMER'S YEAR: A CALENDAR OF ENGLISH HUSBANDRY

Longmans, Green and Co, New York 1933 - Horizontal folio (15" x 12") in original black cloth boards (now protected under stiff clear mylar cover) with gilt titles to front and spine and small gilt illustration at bottom right corner of front board. Shelfwear with very minor warping and some sunning and scuffing to spine. Corners bumped and scuffed with tiny loss of cloth at a few points. Overall however a binding that has retained its color, strength and structure. Some spots of foxing to page edges. Text block has some, generally light, foxing to page margins. Triangular light water stain to top of each page at inside margin but not extending to text or plates. All text and reproductions crisp, clear and unmarked and all retaining the wonderful dark/light contrast characteristic of wood engravings.Initial letters of each chapter are illustrated "illuminations" from wood engraving and there are additional small designs at the end of many of the individual chapters. A beautiful volume by one of the 20th Century's most celebrated printmakers and chroniclers of country life. Uncommon in the U.S. First Edition (stated) which was published in the same year as the British first. Leighton's concerns regarding the demise of traditional agriculture in England were a major motivation for this heartfelt narrative and masterly collection of engravings. In Leighton's own words, "a look at what is being lost". Clare Leighton was born in London in 1898 and studied at the Brighton, Slade and Central Schools of Art. She emigrated to the United States in 1939, became a U.S. citizen in 1945, where she lived until her death in 1989. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Highly attractive bound volume collecting together of six de luxe souvenir programmes from British and American tours of the various incarnations of the celebrated Russian ballet company between 1933 and 1941, billed as the "Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo," "Col. W. de Basil's Ballets Russes" or "Col. W. de Basil's Ballets Russes (de Monte Carlo)," "Covent Garden Russian Ballet Company," and "Original Ballet Russe." De Basil led the renamed company, while Blum and others founded a new company under the name Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. The large-scale professional ballet company toured extensively in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, the United States, and Central and South America until 1947. The programmes are as follow: 1.       1933. 8vo. Altogether 3 pp. on 4 ff. With 2 envelopes. To Mrs. Roland G. Hopkins from the Women's City Club of Boston: "I am asking Doubleday Doran to send you a copy of Paul Engle's 'AMERICAN SONG', which they're just publishing, because I thin both you and Mrs. Russell would be interested in seeing it. He's the young Iowa poet I spoke to you about and I think he has real abilities. And so often a book of poems gets sloughed under by the flood of novels etc. and never happens to reach the people who would like it. And, as Engle is a friend of mine, I resolved that at least his book would get into the hands of a few people who might value it [...]". - Partly on stationery with printed letterhead.

BROMO BOMBASTES: A Fragment From a Laconic Drama.

London: Caduceus Press. 1933. First edition, first impression, limited to 100 copies. First edition, first impression, limited to 100 copies. Inscribed presentation copy. Original deep black boards with printed label to front board. A near fine sharp copy with two unobtrusive water stains to front board. Endpapers lightly foxed, otherwise fine internally. Inscribed on the front free endpaper ?Gaffer Peeslake - Cesspit - Corfu - Greece - To Theodore with undying love?. Inscribed by the author to Theodore Stephanides, the doctor, poet, translator, naturalist and polymath immortalised in Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals and lifelong friend to the Durrell family. Theodore and Lawrence enjoyed a warm friendship, sharing a love of Corfu and corresponding over many years to consult on matters of literature and Greek flora and fauna; such was the debt Durrell felt to Stephanides' gerneously shared knowledge that he dedicated both The Greek Islands (1978) and The Magnetic Island to his friend and mentor. In 1933 Durrell was 21, and this verse drama was his third publication, preceded only by two collections of poetry. An early work with a terrific association and a monument to a fabled literary friendship. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Photographic Archive of Civilian Conservation Corps Camps in California and the Mountain West

ca. 1933-1936 - A charming assemblage of images of Civilian Conservation Corps camp life, catalogued as received, all apparently documenting the career of one CCC youth, identified only as "Jack," from ca. 1933 to 1936. Locales identified in the photographs include Zion National Park; Hornbrook, California; and several identified simply as "Oregon." In addition to portraits of the aforementioned "Jack," subjects include other camp residents and officers, views of camp buildings and camp activities, and scenic views (though nearly every photograph has a human subject). Nearly all are candid, unposed snapshots, many portraying camp residents engaged in work or leisure activities - building bridges, felling trees, playing music, boxing or just showing off their bodies - in all providing a wonderfully disarming glimpse of daily life among the civilian conscripts of the Great Depression. Archive of 50 original black and white photographic prints, most 3" x 4-1/2" (ca 7cm x 11.5cm), some slightly larger or smaller; three printed on post-card stock (3-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Image condition generally Very Good or better; light bumps to corners, several with corners clipped (not affecting image areas); eight images captioned or inscribed in ink on verso in the same unidentified hand. Captioned images mostly dated 1933, three later (1934 & 1936).

Signed Photograph inscribed with an AMQS from Götterdämmerung

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Striking original photograph of the legendary conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, boldly inscribed to Wilford Gunn, clarinetist of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Reiner has penned three bars of a theme in bass clef, marked piano, "sehr weich," which we have identified as the clarinet solo from Act I, Scene IV of Wagner's Götterdämmerung. Reiner has signed below and dated at the lower left: January, 1933. Signed during the period after his leadership of the Cincinnati Orchestra but before he took over in Pittsburgh, and shortly after beginning to teach at the Curtis Institute. Signed at the lower right in white ink by the photographer, Nickolas Boris. Despite one crease at the left edge, this is the finest signed photograph of Reiner we have seen. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25.1 cm).
