Der Schatz Der Sierra Madre (IN ORIGINAL DUST JACKET)

Verlag der Buchergilde Gutenberg, Berlin 1933 - First line on page 18 has been corrected: line begins with Besonderes (the long "s" looks like an "f") but the final word "und" has here been shifted down to the start of second line. This book is at least a partial exception to the old rule of "following the flag" in valuing first editions. Traven wrote in German and the true first edition of "Sierra Madre" was published in that language in Berlin, 1927. Verlag der Buchergilde Gutenberg then proceeded to issue printings dated 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931 and 1933 (meaning we likely have here a sixth or later printing, with minor corrections), all before the first English language editions (separate translations, one by Traven himself) were published in London (Chatto & Windus) and New York (Knopf), both in 1934. All the "first editions thus" are highly valued in England and the U.S., especially in dust jackets, while sellers in German-language countries don't seem to set a very high value on the early German-language printings (when they turn up), especially since virtually all such copies now lack their original jackets. The reason (aside for the larger size of the English-American market, where German-language fluency is rare) is almost certainly the fact that this tale was famously filmed by John Huston in 1948 as "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" with Humphrey Bogart, Tim Holt, and Walter Huston (the director's father), winning three Academy Awards -- all awarded to people named "Huston." The word "classic" is now promiscuously applied to almost any old movie that shows up on television in black-and-white (or -- shudder -- "colorized"), but the film in question is truly a mesmerizing component of the Bogart legend, while (so far as we know) there has never been a German-language film or TV adaptation. This copy is a lovely "very-good" example of the original German edition, large 8vo in orange cloth-covered boards and pale blue endpapers, which will close its own text block but not its boards, albeit dated 1933 (not 1927) to title page as noted, and thus likely a fourth or later printing. Furthermore, this copy retains its ORIGINAL DUST JACKET, also in "very-good" condition, with title in pale blue lettering to spine, and duplicating to front panel the red-and-blue Mesoamerican glyph from front board. In some years of searching, we have never encountered another pre-1934 German edition in original jacket. Der gesamte Text des Buches ist in der deutschen Sprache, of course. 213 pp. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

10 (9 eigenhändige, 1 masch.) Briefe und 4 Postkarten jeweils mit Unterschrift.

Versch. Formate (meist 4.) - Leichte Gebrauchsspuren. Gefaltet. Bände: 10

        "Looking Forward," RARE Advance Copy

New York: John Day Co. , 1933. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. 8vo. Printed wrappers, 279 pp. Spine creased, otherwise fine and held in a custom blue cloth slipcase.<br><br><br><br />Advance copy, one of 130 copies released on March 10, 1933. The following day the publisher recalled the shipment because of numerous errors strewn throughout the text. Of those 130 copies, 120 were returned. This volume contains corrections in ink on pages 36, 41/42 [replaced page], 158, and 269, indicating that it is one of the copies returned to the publisher. <br><br><br />The tale is this: John Day bound 130 of their 3000 sets of sheets in wrappers and sent them out to reviewers on March 10, 1933; presumably the balance of the edition was at that moment in transit to the bindery. FDR received at least one copy in wrappers at the White House the next day and discovered nine significant errors requiring correction. The publisher concurred with the President and dispatched telegrams to the 130 reviewers requesting that they "Return without opening" the packages they would find in their mail that day. Halter reports, and all subsequent retellings repeat, that, miraculously, 120 of the 130 copies were returned, modified (India ink deletions and a new tipped-in leaf at pp. 141-142, on which too many errors appeared to merely ink-out words), and re-posted on the 15th. <br><br><br />This work, published in the wake of the Great Depression, is "essentially a compilation from many articles written and speeches made prior to March 1, 1933" and includes chapters on topics such as the reorganization of the government, taxation, agriculture, railroads, and judicial reform.

The Passion of Joan of Arc (Original US poster for the 1933 sound reissue of the 1928 film)

N.p.: Societe Generale des Films, 1933. Vintage US one sheet poster for the 1933 sound reissue of the 1928 French film, a 61-minute cut of the film featuring narration by radio star David Ross and no intertitles. One of the most significant films in cinema history, directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, depicting the trial of Joan of Arc. The film was shot on one huge concrete set modeled on medieval architecture in order to realistically portray the Rouen prison where Joan was held. The film is known for its cinematography and use of close-ups. Dreyer also didn't allow the actors to wear make-up and used lighting designs that made the actors look more grotesque. "The Passion of Joan of Arc" was actress Maria Falconetti's only leading role, and her studious dedication to the character forever influenced cinematic acting. Set in England, shot on location in France. 28 x 40 inches (71 x 102 cm). Very Good. Moderate chipping to the margins, torn on the top, and repaired to the verso. A light dampstain to the front right margin. [Still] A beautiful, bright poster. Criterion 62. Ebert I. Godard, Histoires du cinema. Rosenbaum 1000.

Marlborough: His Life and Times, a full set of four British first editions, finely bound in full red morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1933. First edition, first printing. Full leather. This is a spectacular, full, four-volume set of first editions of Marlborough: His Life and Times bound in full red morocco goatskin by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The elegant bindings feature hubbed and gilt ruled spines, each bearing the title and author, as well as the individual volume numbers. There are gilt rule borders on the covers, gilt rules on the binding edges, gilt page edges, and gilt ruled turn-ins framing striking, marbled endpapers. Even the gold, red, and black head and foot bands are executed with noteworthy skill and aesthetic effect. ?Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London, England? is gilt-stamped on each lower front pastedown. This venerable firm, founded by Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe in 1901, became recognized as one of the leading bookbinders in London. Like Churchill himself, Sangorski & Sutcliffe endured the First World War, the Great Depression, the Second World War, and post-war austerity. This truly gorgeous example of the fine binder?s craft is a reminder to collectors that not all fine bindings are created equal. Condition of the bindings is fine ? square, tight, clean, bright, and supple with just a few trivial scuffs but no appreciable wear. The British first edition, first printing contents are well-suited to the bindings, notably crisp and bright with none of the spotting endemic to this edition and no previous ownership marks. Winston Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. This decade saw Churchill pass into his sixties with his own future as uncertain as that of his nation. It is perhaps not incidental that Churchill?s great work of the 1930s was about a great ancestor. Churchill may have wondered more than once if the life history he was writing might ultimately eclipse his own. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." The work was well received. Two months after Volume I was published, on 12 December 1933, T.E. Lawrence wrote to Churchill: ?I finished it only yesterday. I wish I had not? The skeleton of the book is so good. Its parts balance and the main stream flows? Marlborough has the big scene-painting, the informed pictures of men, the sober comment on political method, the humour, irony and understanding of your normal writing: but beyond that it shows more discipline and strength: and great dignity. It is history, solemn and decorative.? Please anticipate that this large, heavy set may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A97.2(I-IV).a, Woods/ICS A40(aa); Langworth p.166.

Little Wizard of OZ, Jell-o Premium, 4 Vol. Set - ORIGINAL MAILER

Reilly & Lee, Chicago 1933 - PRICE IS FOR ALL 4 BOOKS -- COMPLETE SET IN MINT CONDITION, with ORIGINAL GENERAL FOODS MAILING ENVELOPE: SCARECROW & TIN-MAN, JACK PUMPKINHEAD, OZMA, & TIKTOK Soon after it's coming to national recognition, the JELL-O Company sponsored a "Wizard of OZ" radio program, with advertising premiums of a series of FOUR children's booklets by Frank L. Baum, author of the "Wizard of OZ" books, based on the original 1913 Little Wizard of OZ tales. JELL-O recipes and copy were included at the back of the books, including a Color pictorial of The Tin-man & Scarecrow carrying a big tray of Red JELL-O on the rear wrap. It was the first Radio network series about the Wizard of OZ, debuting a 15 minute Children's program on September 15, 1933. Jell-O sponsored this , which aired on NBC three times a week and was produced at WTMJ in Milwaukee. The radio version (unlike the 1939 movie) stuck closely to Baum's original formula and details. For example, the magic shoes were SILVER (as in the book) not Ruby Red (as in the MGM film.) The radio series only lasted until March 1934. Although no audio copies have survived, some few of the radio premiums from this series are still available. Jell-O sent listeners one of the Four different Soft Color Wrapped books, "Little Wizard Stories", illustrated by J. R. Neill, in return for 3 Jell-O box fronts and one "thin" dime. They were published by Reilly & Lee in slightly smaller versions of the same books they had produced the year earlier for their 4 Puzzle/Book sets. DIFFICULT TO FIND COMPLETE COLLECTION -- in RARE MINT CONDITION -- WITH ORIGINAL GENERAL FOODS MAILING POUCH! I'm sure very few Complete Sets have survived, since the demand often exceeded the supply, and most fans never got all 4 books! All Four are Complete IN 30 PAGES, EACH WITH 8 FULL PAGE COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS (Centerfold counted as two), in tact, with covers still well attached, in Near MINT Condition. None have any Names or Marks, or Coloring -- Appear to have never been even read!! AGAIN, LISTING PRICE IS FOR THE ENTIRE 4 BOOK SET with MAILER! [Attributes: Soft Cover]
