GANDHI, Mohandas K., "Mahatma".
1931 1931 - Original wallet-sized photograph (73 x 48 mm), framed and glazed (overall 215 x 260 mm), double sided-mount displaying Gandhi's signature on verso of photograph, facsimile of inscription mounted alongside image on recto. In excellent condition. A fine original, candid image of the great Indian statesman, signed on verso "M. K. Gandhi 10-9-31", captured on the deck of SS Rajputana, wearing his dhoti and standing alongside Captain H. M. Jack of the P&O Line. We believe the man behind the lens to be the distinguished Associated Press journalist and camerman James A. Mills (1883-1942), "a tall, handsome, soft-spoken man who had been appointed chief of bureau in Moscow in 1924 He travelled to the Balkans, Ethiopia, the Near East, India, Manchuria, northwestern China, and across the Russian steppes He covered Mohandas K. Gandhi's struggle for independence in India in the 1930s, winning Gandhi's favour by treating him as an 'intensely appealing human character, rather than as a fanatic or freak'" (Breaking News: How the Associated Press Has Covered War, Peace, and Everything Else, 2007, p. 266). Mills was the first journalist to conduct a filmed interview with Gandhi, on 30 April 1931 (released in cinemas by Fox Movietone News). For his own personal use Mills preferred Filmo and Eyemo movie cameras and wrote a piece entitled "Filming Mahatma Gandhi" for Filmo Topics magazine (January 1932) in which he revealed that "Mr. Gandhi took a solemn vow, some thirty years ago, that he would never pose for a photograph, a painting, sculpture, or any other artificial reproduction … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Wohlerhalten. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 750 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

London: Victor Gollancz Ltd. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. 1931. First Edition. Hardcover. [a sharp and crisp copy, the book itself showing no wear at all apart from the tiniest bit of fraying to the bottom rear corner; the jacket has a few tiny surface-nicks along the spine, which is also slightly age-toned, and one very small closed tear at the top edge of the rear panel]. INSCRIBED to actress Heather Angel, and SIGNED on the ffep by the playwright and also by Auriol Lee, producer of the original London stage production, which premiered in May 1931 at the Duke of York's Theatre. Miss Angel and Frank Lawton were the stars of that production, a frothy comedy about an office romance; both repeated their roles in the 1932 film adaptation, re-titled AFTER OFFICE HOURS. The original play, although it had a decent run of 170 performances, went into eclipse until a 2013 revival at London's Finborough Theatre, which subsequently transferred to St. James' Theatre in the West End -- and, word has it, there's a new-ish film version out there somewhere, completed in late 2014 but as yet unreleased.
