Los Angeles: Bruce McCallister, 1931. Condition: A near fine copy in decorated paper-covered boards. 25 leaves, including 14 with woodblock prints captioned below in type. With two additional small engravings, one printed on the title label mounted to the front board and a second vignette on the colophon page, both as issued. Forced by his medium to capture essentials, Landacre depicted the hills of the California coast in their intrinsic structural power as the architecture of the planet itself'--Kevin Starr, Material Dreams: Southern California Through the 1920s, p. 330. The American Institute of Graphic Arts named California Hills one of the 50 best-designed books of the year. With an introduction by Arthur Millier. First edition (first printing). A near fine copy in decorated paper-covered boards. The book shows only minor wear to the corners, virtually no tanning or offsetting of ink on the interior pages. Zaitsev, I[van]. M[atveevich]
Shanghai: Slovo, 1931. Octavo (25 × 17 cm). Original blue pictorial wrappers; 165 pp.; four unnumbered plates of maps and plans. Front wrapper soiled and with small hole; rust to staples and gatherings starting to detach; lacking rear wrapper (featuring a drawing by Samuel Armour). This early GULAG narrative gives an emotional account of the author's four-year prison term in the Solovki prison camp, where he was interned as a political prisoner in 1924-1928. Ivan Matveevich Zaitsev (1879-1934) was a Cossack and a White Army officer who escaped to Shanghai, China after the defeat of his army. In 1923 he received a personal pardon and returned to the Soviet Union, where he was arrested in 1924 and sentenced to a four-year term in the now infamous Solovki, a monastery then newly converted into an internment and work camp. Upon release in 1928, Zaitsev escaped to Shanghai once again, this time getting the cold shoulder from the White émigré community in China due to his service in the Soviet Union and so falling onto hard times. He published this biographical work in Shanghai in 1931, perhaps in part to absolve himself. In 'Solovki' he records both the history and administrative structure of the camp, as well as his own personal experiences as a prisoner, continually referring to the camp as "communist hell" and subtitling one of the maps of the camp as "the Soviet Union in miniature." Zaitsev died by suicide, in Shanghai, in 1934. The text is appended with four maps depicting the Solovki island, Solovki Kremlin, Solovki Forestry Headquarters, and Gora Sekirnaia (where punishe … [Click Below for Full Description]

GÖDEL, Kurt.
Leipzig: Akademische Verlagsgesellschaft, 1931; 1930. First edition. First edition, extremely rare author's presentation offprint, of Gödel's famous incompleteness theorem, "one of the major contributions to modern scientific thought" (Nagel & Newman). "Every system of arithmetic contains arithmetical propositions, by which is meant propositions concerned solely with relations between whole numbers, which can neither be proved nor be disproved within the system. This epoch-making discovery by Kurt Gödel, a young Austrian mathematician, was announced by him to the Vienna Academy of Sciences in 1930 and was published, with a detailed proof, in a paper in the Monatshefte für Mathematik und Physik, Volume 38, pp. 173-198" (R. B. Braithwaite in Gödel/Meltzer, p. 1). "This theorem is an important limiting result regarding the power of formal axiomatics, but has also been of immense importance in other areas, such as the theory of computability" (Zach, p. 917). Gödel "obtained what may be the most important mathematical result of the 20th century: his famous incompleteness theorem, which states that within any axiomatic mathematical system there are propositions that cannot be proved or disproved on the basis of the axioms within that system; thus, such a system cannot be simultaneously complete and consistent. This proof established Gödel as one of the greatest logicians since Aristotle, and its repercussions continue to be felt and debated today" (Britannica). The offprint of Gödel's incompleteness theorem is here accompanied by an author's presentation offprint of his earlier c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gill, Eric
Waltham Saint Lawrence: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1931. Limited edition. Hardcover. Folio. 65 wood-engraved sub-titles, pictorial headlines and initials by Eric Gill. Original half white pigskin by Sangorski and Sutcliff. Finely printed by Robert and Moira Gibbings. One of 488 numbered copies (from a total edition of 500) , this being No. 326. This edition of the Four Gospels set in the text of the King James Gospels is a masterly example of book design. "Conceived in the fruitful mind of Robert Gibbings, this is the Golden Cockerel book usually compared with the Doves Bible and the Kelmscott Chaucer." Light wear and spotting but essentially a fine copy. Housed in maroon cloth clamshell case. Chanticleer, 78. CHARLES ROSENDAHL to LT. COMDR. FRANK 'SPIG' WEAD
[AVIATION]. ROSENDAHL, CHARLES E. Up Ship!. New York: Dodd Mead, 1931. First Edition. Signed presentation copy fro Lt.-Comdr, Charles E. Rosendahl to Lt. Comdr. Frank 'Spig' Wead, inscribed by the author: "With best wishes to 'Spig' Wead in recognition of all the contributions he has made to aeronautics in spite of great odds. C.E. Rosendahl. 28 November, 1931." Illustrated. Very good lightly used copy in a lightly dust soiled dust jacket which has some chipping and creasing with the largest effecting the lettering at head of spine. 'Spig' Wead was an ace pilot in the U.S. Navy just after World War I, greatly contributing to the development of the Navy's aviation programs. After an unfortunate accident in which he became paralyzed, he became a writer of novels, stories, and screenplays, including West Point of the Air, China Clipper, Sea Devils, Moon Over Burma, etc. His biographical history Wings for Men served as the inspiration for the great John Ford film The Wings of Eagles starring John Wayne. The front panel of the dust jacket of this book has a wonderful painting of a dirigible air ship soaring above its hangar. A terrific book detailing the history and development of airships in the United States. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
