Buick, T. Lindsay.
New Plymouth, N. Z. Thomas Avery & Sons Limited 1931. Octavo. Original dark blue-green pebble cloth boards, titles to spine and upper board gilt. With the dust jacket. Frontispiece and 26 plates. Corner of upper board bumped, cloth a little dulled, white mark to upper board, a little light spotting to edges of text block and occasionally to contents. A very good copy in the jacket that has a few small spots, a faint ring to the upper board, and some small chips and short closed tears. First edition, first impression. An unusually attractive copy in the scarce dust jacket. The Mystery of the Moa is a scientific and historical narrative of the giant birds of New Zealand, covering their origin in prehistory, behavior and habitat, relationship to Maori culture, extinction, and the European search for fossils and living specimens. Well-illustrated, the plates include photographs of Moa skeletons and eggs (including the famous image of Sir Richard Owen next to the York specimen), New Zealand landscapes, and Maori and European individuals associated with the Moa. Author Thomas Lindsay Buick (1865-1938) "was a man of considerable intellectual ability, substantially self-educated, who began writing New Zealand history by chance but soon developed a lasting commitment to the task. During a busy career as a journalist he managed to write 12 books and a small number of pamphlets, many of which he published at his own expense. Buick had a fluent prose style and a firm sense of narrative structure. He synthesised a wide range of printed sources and, particularly for his earlier works, so … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hammett, Dashiell
Alfred A. Knopf, New York & London, 1931. [288pp, top edge pale green]: [xii], 276 (last two leaves blank & unopened); stamped rust cloth, lacking jacket; 195 x 136 x 32 mm. Third printing of the author's first book, issued March 1931 (originally February 1929; second printing March 1930). A nice bright copy with the only 'problem' being some scattered foxing along the fore-edge of the book block & outer margin of a few terminal leaves. Note that the bibliographer was entirely unaware of this printing, designating the third printing of the work as a Grosset & Dunlap edition [Layman A1.1c]. Leading to the presumption that the two Depression-era reprints were issued in extremely small numbers (in the case of the present volume, small enough to remain virtually unknown). Very scarce. Izaak Walton, Illustrated by Arthur Rackham
Philadelphia: David McKay Co., [1931]. Hardcover, First American Edition, 7 1/2 x 9 3/4". 224 pp. Scarce original publisher's box with split on one side and some wear, otherwise in very good condition. Dust jacket in near fine condition, price clipped, some minor rubbing to the back cover. Dark green cloth over boards, with gilt titles and vignette on front cover and spine, top edge gilt, illustrated endpapers, complete with 12 colour plates and tissue guards, many line illustrations throughout, in near fine condition. (Latimore & Haskell, p. 67). The Coigney reference book on this title lists the second Rackham edition (Coigney 313) as having a dust jacket with Harrap on the spine and a sail ship device above that. That describes this jacket. However, Coigney also references the third Rackham edition (Coigney 314) as having the publisher's name McKay substituted for the Harrap name on the spine of the book. So we have here a dust jacket from the second Rackham edition and a book from the third Rackham edition. Subtitled "The Contemplative Man's Recreation, Being a Discourse of Rivers, Fishponds, Fish and Fishing, not unworthy the Perusal of most Anglers." The Compleat Angler is a practical guide to the art of angling, or fishing; however, it also has political and historical underpinnings. What sets "The Compleat Angler" apart from other practical handbooks and puts it firmly in the realm of literature is its delightful style that is technically polished and charming to read and its abundance of insight into human nature
