Schacht, Hjalmar Horace Greeley
London: J. Cape & H. Smith, 1931. London: J. Cape & H. Smith. Hardcover. B00085IBMG 271 pages. Index. Author was "the man upon whom fell the brunt of piloting Germany through the financial dangers of 1923 to 1929. It was the historic German financial collapse of 1923 that first brought Dr. Schacht into prominence. In November of that year he was made the Imperial Currency Commissioner with the specific purpose of stemming the nation's hyperinflation. This book is one of the best contributions yet made to an understanding of post-War difficulties in finance and economics. In particular, Chapter XIII, on 'The Socialist System,' contains a warning for Great Britain which can hardly fail to make a profound impression." - Introduction. Modicum of library markings. Binding sound. Moderate foxing, primarily to fore- and bottom edges. Above-average but not excessive overall wear. Dust jacket now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. A sound copy. Done in a generally "socialist realist style", the publication also features some interesting examples of photomontage. Each issue focuses on one or a few different projects or industries and features striking images taken by many of the most notable Soviet photographers of the era, including Arkady Shaikhet, Max Alpert, Georgy Petrusov, and Boris Ignatovich. Also features contributions from Alexander Rodchenko. In addition to these original Russian-language issues publication was famously also issued in French, German, English and later in 1938 in Spanish. Text in Russian. Foxing to edges and endpapers; an excellent copy in the faded and slightly soiled jacket with some nicks and chips to extremities. First UK edition, first impression. Originally published in the US earlier the same year. Perhaps Fort's most popular work, this is his third published non-fiction book, in which he is widely credited as having coined the term teleportation. Charles Fort (1874-1932) was an American writer and researcher into examples of the occult, supernatural, and paranormal. Today, the terms Fortean and Forteana are used to characterize such anomalous occurences, and the International Fortean Organisation and the Fortean Times remain devoted to the phenomena he studied. "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck. Published by The John Day Company, New York, 1931. Winner of the 1932 Pulitzer Prize for Novel (Fiction). First edition, first printing, first issue; With edition points: "The copyright page states "COPYRIGHT, 1931, BY PEARL S. BUCK" and there is no mention of subsequent printings. The bottom of the copyright page says "FOR THE JOHN DAY PUBLISHING COMPANY, INC." which was later changed to "FOR THE JOHN DAY COMPANY" late into the first printing, and is found on all subsequent printings. So although the "JOHN DAY PUBLISHING COMPANY" error is the first state, the second state "JOHN DAY COMPANY" is much more scarce. The dust jacket is rare and adds most of the value to the book. It is the only Pulitzer Prize winning novel whose first trade edition is WITHOUT a price on the dust jacket. Even advance issues, identical to the first printing trade dust jacket, are without a price statement." With its very rare original dust jacket. The dust jacket is in good condition. Chipping and creasing to the edges with small chips to the rear panel. Stains to the panels and spine. Sunning to the spine with paper loss at the bottom edge. The book is in very good to very good plus condition. The boards are well preserved with firm edges. Faint sunning to the spine with rubbing to the gilt titling and decoration. The front board is slightly cocked. Previous owner's bookplate on the front paste-down. The binding is starting at page 23 and 283. Hill, William Henry; Arthur F. Hill; Alfred Ebsworth Hill.
William E. Hill & Sons, 1931. The first edition in its deluxe format, in an eye-catching Riviere binding: a carefully detailed, extensively illustrated examination of the careers and productions of all five of the master instrument-makers of the Guarneri family. The text is enhanced by => 58 full-page depictions of known examples of Guarneri work, often in multiple views, with many color-printed and the rest in crisply impressed photogravure, along with two oversized, folding maps and numerous in-text illustrations. And it bears a touching dedication to the memory of William Hill (1857-1929), noting that this history "embodies the knowledge and considered views of three brothers who lived and worked in a life-long intimacy." The second part consists of drawings of pyramids and other elements, for example, formations of figures like airplane or phrases like "1st of May". Pyramids and physical education in general was a propaganda tool and a way to bring order to everyday life. Physical exercises were carried out in the form of building pyramids, acrobatic and dance movements, a "live newspaper", they had to resemble movements of a machine, hammermen, reapers, plowmen, etc. The daily work of clubs and sport sections turned into the preparation of such performances. Defining the ideological orientation of physical culture in a socialist society, the party indicated that it should be considered not only as a means of physical education and rehabilitation, work and military training of young people, but also as a means … [Click Below for Full Description]
