"Über formal unentscheidbare Sätze der Principia Mathematica und verwandter Systeme I." Offprint from Monatshefte für Mathematik und Physik, XXXVIII, Band I.

Leipzig: Akademische verlagsgesellschaft, 1931. FIRST EDITION. Original printed back wrapper; front wrapper in facsimile (from the copy owned by Princeton University, with Überreicht vom Verfasser printed on top); small stain (from tape?) on bottom corner of first page. Preserved in a full morocco clamshell case. First edition of the first printing of Gödel's Proof, the single most celebrated result in mathematical logic. This paper, On Formally Undecidable Propositions (Incompleteness Theorem) is of legendary rarity. We were only able to locate one copy at Princeton University. Famed mathematician Kurt Gödel proved two extraordinary theorems. His paper showed that arithmetic was incomplete. In any consistent formal system able to describe simple arithmetic, there are propositions that can be neither proved nor disproved on the basis of the system. Thus a larger system may have to be used to prove consistency, and its consistency assumed; all pretty unsatisfactory. Accepted by all mathematicians, these propositions have revolutionized mathematics, showing that mathematical truth is more than logic and computation. It helped tear down the notion that there was anything certain about the universe.. According to philosophy professor Rebecca Goldstein, Gödel was an intellectual heir to Plato, whose sense of alienation from the positivists and post-modernists of the 1940's was only ameliorated by his friendship with Einstein. As Goldstein writes, "That his work, like Einstein's, has been interpreted as not only consistent with the revolt against objectivity but also as among its most compelling driving forces is . . . more than a little ironic." Gödel (1906-1978), an Austrian born philosopher and mathematician, studied at Vienna. He saw much of the development of the positivist school of philosophy and was apparently unconvinced. He investigated the larger logical system put forward by Russell and Whitehead in their Principia mathematica and his resulting paper (above) may well be the most significant event in 20th century mathematics.

        Camps in the Woods

New York: Architectural Book Publishing Co. 1931. Folio. 96pp. Illustrated from photographs by John Wallace Gillies, Inc. and original drawings prepared in the office of the author. Original gilt-decorated cloth; dust jacket. A fine presentation copy, inscribed by Shepard to Godrey Haggard, noted United Kingdom politician who at the time was Consul General to Guatemala. Shepard designed many camps and cottages for the Adirondack League Club, a private landowner's association founded in 1890 in Old Forge (Herkimer County). Included are architectural drawings of private camps, boathouses, outbuildings, interior details, furniture, gates, and fireplaces. This work proved influential in the design of structures in national parks. Of his own work, Shepard wrote " in the design of these camps we see the structural element logically emphasized. Visible construction may be said to stand as an architectural symbol of nature's growth, and these camps make their strongest appeal in the fact that their designs are so definitely based on structure. This is evident in the roof trusses, the peeled log and pole beams and the split pole studs, so frequently used... Every detail possesses some structural significance... Simplicity is the keynote of the design as it is in nature." Some soiling to cloth, a few chips/small losses to jacket at edges.

        The Glass Key

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1931. First edition of Hammett's personal favorite novel. Octavo, original pale green cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "For Ben Lyon and Bebe Daniels with best regards -- Dashiell Hammett, Hollywood, August, 1931." The recipient, Ben Lyon and his wife Bebe Daniels were famous movie actors of the day. Their careers stretching from the early silent era to the TV series Life with the Lyons in the mid-1950s. Daniels starred in the well received 1931 film version of The Maltese Falcon, playing the role of Ruth Wonderly. After serialization in Black Mask, March to June, 1930. Small repair to the spine, an excellent example in a later dust jacket with blurbs regarding the book (by Woollcott, Parker, and F.P.A.) on the front flap, the jacket identical with that for the first printing except for the flaps. A remarkable association, rare and desirable signed and inscribed by Hammett. The Glass Key spins a more ambitious and unusual web whose threads are male friendship, male loyalty and male betrayal, and considers the ultimate treachery -- the murder of a son by his father... In Ned Beaumont -- principled, forlorn, afflicted with an uneasy worldliness and the ability to understand the meaner motives and ambitions of friends, and tubercular -- Hammett produced his nearest self-portrait" (Diane Johnson, Dashiell Hammett: A Life, 1987, pp. 86-7). It was first published as a serial in Black Mask magazine in 1930, then was collected in 1931 (in London; the American edition followed 3 months later) It tells the story of a gambler and racketeer, Ned Beaumont, whose devotion to a crooked political boss, Paul Madvig, leads him to investigate the murder of a local senator's son as a potential gang war brews. Hammett dedicated the novel to his onetime lover Nell Martin. There have been two film adaptations (1935 and 1942) of the novel. A radio adaptation starring Orson Welles aired on March 10, 1939, as part of his Campbell Playhouse program. The book was also a major influence on the Coen brothers' 1990 film Miller's Crossing, about a gambler who is a right-hand man to a corrupt political boss and their involvement in a brewing gang war.

L. Hodgkin, Trinity College, Cambridge, to front free endpaper. In publisher's green cloth with gilt titles to spine, with gilt armorial stamp of Trinity College to upper board. Very good indeed. A collection of published and unpublished mathematical papers, published shortly after the young economist/mathematician/philosopher's tragic early death. Having been interupted by the Second World War, he was eventually honoured with the 1963 Nobel Prize for Medicine, awarded jointly to Andrew Huxley and John Eccles as well as Hodgkin, for their ground-breaking work on synapses.

      - De Ganay 111 (description based on a 1931 sale catalogue) & 113; KVK & WorldCat (4 copies with 4 vols. but reporting only 28 plates; 1 copy with vols. 1-3; a few single vols.); not in Springer; Fowler; Berlin Kat. Fine set of the rarest of great French gardening books by Pierre Panseron (ca. 1736-1787), a well-known Paris architect and Royal engraver. The Recueil de jardinage is divided into many smaller parts, which were also sold separately. Panseron had studied with the great French architect Jacques François Blondel and had been building inspector for the Prince de Conti and professor of drawing at the Royal Military Academy before he settled at Paris as a private tutor of architecture and drawing. He published a number of architectural and gardening atlases, whose full catalogues are added to volume four, both in letterpress and on engraved leaves. All plates were designed and engraved by Panseron. The plates of the present works are printed on strong paper with slightly bluish cast, some of it by Arthaud in Auvergne. They present a rich and wonderful survey of garden landscaping, art and architecture in France in the second half of the 18th century, when English and Chinese gardens were in vogue. The bindings show surface damage and some professional restorations, but most of the plates are in fine condition. An important garden publication of the utmost rarity.

Oxford, 1941, FIRST EDITION, frontispiece and two plates with further illustrations to text, pp. xv, 239, 8vo, in matching format and condition with a small pencil numeral at head of dustjacket's front panel The set of A.L. Rowse, all but the second volume (which still features his markings) carrying his ownership inscription - in the majority of cases written across the gutter of the front endpapers, as was his wont. Accompanying the set are Rowse's notes on six separate sheets of various origin - mostly on the reverse of letters to him that carry a small amount of interest in the insight into his own activities that they provide. Two of the sheets were sent by the publisher, the one a review slip and the last a longer typed letter - signed by Basil Blackwell - presenting the final volume of the works, and explaining that the enterprise ('which I confess I contemplate with pride') was 'not an easy task to undertake even in peace time, and two years of war have not eased the burden'. Rowse's notes on these sheets are extensive, and add meat to the more sparing markings found within the volumes themselves - overall his notes demonstrate his extensive knowledge of the period and the author's work, but also its relation to more modern matters. The question of the addressee of Shakespeare's Sonnets is described as 'the most tantalising problem in Eng. Lit.', whilst a passage in 'The Moone-Calfe' is glossed with 'cf Brophy on Gore Vidal on Freud'.

TORTURE GARDEN. Translated from the French ... by Alvah C. Bessie. With a Foreword by James Huneker ..

New York: Claude Kendall, 1931.. Octavo, pp. [1-20] 1-284, nine illustrations in text by Jeanette Seelhoff, original marbled boards with black cloth shelf back, spine panel stamped in gold, pictorial endpapers. First edition in English. Translation of LE JARDIN DES SUPPLICES (1898), a novel published at the height of the Dreyfus affair on the eve of the trial of Alfred Dreyfus in Rennes, the result of tinkering with texts designed independently of each other, at different times, in different styles and with different characters. Mirbeau, a French anarchist, wrote the central part of novel as a grotesque caricature of the French political circles of the Third Republic. "A deliriously decadent novel of Oriental exoticism, considering torture as one of the fine arts. Not merely Sadistic, but Sadean, termed by Huneker 'the most damnably cruel book in contemporary fiction.' A definite precursor to the graphic horror fiction of our time; a fin de siecle Clive Barker." - Robert Knowlton. A very unfaithful and very melodramatic theatrical adaptation of the novel was produced by Pierre Chaine and Andre de Lorde and represented Theatre Grand Guignol on 28 October 1922, and two films, both unfaithful, were based on the novel. Bleiler (1948), p. 201. Mild rubbing to edges of boards, hint of fading at upper spine end, a nearly fine copy in very good pictorial dust jacket with wear at edges and 10 mm chip from upper spine end. (#148782)

Mexico, Contemporaneos Mexico, 1928 / 1931. (Wikipedia)

        Letters of John Marin

New York: Privately Printed for An American Place, 1931. 8vo. Original grey cloth, gilt-lettered on spine. A superb presentation copy, with a lengthy inscription by Alfred Steiglitz on a laid-in sheet to Dorothy Norman: "I did not fail to inscribe this book -- If you will look at the last leaves of the volume you'll find way down in the left hand corner in pencil DPN / AS 1931. So we had not forgotten. For Dorothy, Alfred. An American Place. May 11 - 1940." The pencil inscription is on the final leaf. Dorothy Stecker Norman - photographer and patron of the arts - was one of Stieglitz's most devoted followers after they met in 1927. Though both married at the time - Stieglitz to Georgia O'Keeffe and Norman to Edward A. Norman (son of an early Sears & Roebuck entrepreneur) - they soon became friends and lovers. Their relationship continued until his death in 1946; she was divorced from Norman in 1951. Though she never worked as a professional photographer, Norman is remembered for the many intimate portraits of artists, writers, and social figures important to the time, and for documenting the spaces in which they travelled. She took a well-known series of images documenting An American Place, Stieglitz's last gallery and that serving as the publisher of this edition of Marin's letters. Stieglitz's lengthy inscription implies the depths of their relationship, just four years after they met. His initialed presentation inscription, hidden at the end of the volume in a tiny penciled script, shows a quiet acknowledgement of their relations, while his boldly penned laid-in inscription more forcefully declares his intentions to present the volume to his lover. Marin had held his first one-man exhibition at Stieglitz's 291 Gallery in 1909. They remained friends for over 40 years, and Stieglitz showed Marin's work almost every year in one of his galleries. His major retrospective at MoMA would take place five years after the publication of these letters, which show the major impact each had on the other artistically, socially, and financially. Glassine worn else a fine copy.
