Contemporaneos - Rivista Mexicana de Cultura. [ Editores: Bernardo J. Gastelum, Jamie Torres Bodet, B. Ortiz de Montellano, Enrique Gonzalez Rojo].

Mexico, Contemporaneos Mexico, 1928 / 1931. (Wikipedia)

        Letters of John Marin

New York: Privately Printed for An American Place, 1931. 8vo. Original grey cloth, gilt-lettered on spine. A superb presentation copy, with a lengthy inscription by Alfred Steiglitz on a laid-in sheet to Dorothy Norman: "I did not fail to inscribe this book -- If you will look at the last leaves of the volume you'll find way down in the left hand corner in pencil DPN / AS 1931. So we had not forgotten. For Dorothy, Alfred. An American Place. May 11 - 1940." The pencil inscription is on the final leaf. Dorothy Stecker Norman - photographer and patron of the arts - was one of Stieglitz's most devoted followers after they met in 1927. Though both married at the time - Stieglitz to Georgia O'Keeffe and Norman to Edward A. Norman (son of an early Sears & Roebuck entrepreneur) - they soon became friends and lovers. Their relationship continued until his death in 1946; she was divorced from Norman in 1951. Though she never worked as a professional photographer, Norman is remembered for the many intimate portraits of artists, writers, and social figures important to the time, and for documenting the spaces in which they travelled. She took a well-known series of images documenting An American Place, Stieglitz's last gallery and that serving as the publisher of this edition of Marin's letters. Stieglitz's lengthy inscription implies the depths of their relationship, just four years after they met. His initialed presentation inscription, hidden at the end of the volume in a tiny penciled script, shows a quiet acknowledgement of their relations, while his boldly penned laid-in inscription more forcefully declares his intentions to present the volume to his lover. Marin had held his first one-man exhibition at Stieglitz's 291 Gallery in 1909. They remained friends for over 40 years, and Stieglitz showed Marin's work almost every year in one of his galleries. His major retrospective at MoMA would take place five years after the publication of these letters, which show the major impact each had on the other artistically, socially, and financially. Glassine worn else a fine copy.

Canticum Canticorum Salomonis Quod Hebraice Dicitur Sir Hasirim.

(Weimar): Cranach Press, 1931. Tall octavo. 31, (1)pp. From an edition of 268 copies, this is one of 200 copies on hand-made Maillol-Kessler paper. Printed in red and black and illustrated throughout with wood engravings and decorated initials by Eric Gill. This ancient dialogue between the Bride and Groom is one of the most lyrical love passages of all time. Bound in half vellum and plain boards with original dust wrapper and slipcase. T.e.g. A very fine copy with the usual slight foxing to the fore-edge. A book of distinction, sought after as a major illustrated, private press book and one of the outstanding efforts from the Cranach Press. It is perhaps worth noting that this book appeared at a time when the effects of the Great Depression were really being felt. This was not lost on Kessler, who remarked in a letter to Gill that "one must hope that a sufficient number of people and fortunes have survived the crisis and will continue to buy fine books and thus make their production possible." (Müller Krumbach 56; Gill 284; The Artist & the Book 121).

        A Solo in Tom-Toms

New York: Covici-Friede. 1931. First. First edition. Printed wrappers. 30pp. An about very good copy with a crease on front wrap, moderate age-toning, and a short split at the top of the front wrap. An autobiographical essay on the author's childhood, issued as a promotional piece, and a decade-and-a-half later expanded to book length and published by Viking Press. Bookplate of actor Ricardo Cortez on the inside front wrap. Inscribed by Fowler to Cortez. The glue from the bookplate has scuffed the inscription a little, the presumed text supplied by us here in brackets: "To Ric Cortez, This is a sample of what fools my parents must have [been on t]heir honeymoon. Regards, Gene Jan -- 1933." .

        WHITE BEARS AND GOLD

Boston: Richard G. Badger, Publisher The Gorham Press, 1931.. Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7 [8-10] 11-249 [250-254: blank] [note: last two leaves are blanks], original decorated black cloth, front panel stamped in gold and blind, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition. A presentation copy with signed inscription by May dated 2 January 1933 on the front free endpaper. Loosely connected short stories narrated by the Wandering Jew about some of his strange adventures. Almost all are fantastic in one way or another. Some develop magical themes from folklore and legend, including Christian sources. Others are tall tales in the true Munchausian tradition, devising grotesque fates for animals. Others are what might be called biological science fiction -- one is a tale of Frankensteinian experiments. Another relates, without explanation, the odd incidents in a haunted house: the spectral figures might be either ghosts or zombies or actors. Another, the longest, is a tale of a lost race beneath the desert of Egypt, reached by a submarine -- in Elizabethan times. Another is a traditional vampire story. A survey of methods of torture and a (female) detective story round out the collection. The writing style is choppy and flat, with little control of narrative flow, suspense, and momentum, failing to develop the full potential of what is, in many cases, imaginative raw material. Scarce. May seems to have been a Midwesterner working in the life insurance business. He produced another work of fiction, a novel, in 1924; both were probably vanity published. Anderson, The Legend of the Wandering Jew, pp. 364-5. Teitler (2013) 840. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Reginald (1979; 1992) or Day, A Supplemental Checklist of Fantastic Literature (1963). A fine copy in very good decorated dust jacket with light wear and short closed tears, mostly along bottom edge. An elusive book rarely found in jacket. (#156025)

The Story of the Airship [Pioneer Aviator Will D. "Billy" Parker's Copy, Signed By Him and More Than 3 Dozen Early Aviators Attendees of the 1931 Cleveland Airshow] Zeppelin, Blimp

Akron: The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co, 1931. Hard Cover. Near Fine. Octavo. 84 pages, black pictorial cloth, printed in blue and silver, showing a skyline and blimp on front panel. First edition of 1931, 7th in the series, since 1925; illustrated in black and white. Signed by Billy Parker and more than 3 dozen fellow pioneer aviators, who were in attendance at the National Air Races, Cleveland Ohio Airport, August 29 - September 7, 1931; dated above Billy Parker's signature, "August 30, 1931" and with a letter laid in presenting the book to an heir of Billy Parker. Will D. "Billy" Parker (1899-1981) carried private pilot's license number 44. As a high school student in Ft. Collins, CO, he built a glider which flew to an altitude of 300 feet. His mother helped him buy a 50 horsepower French Gnome engine - thus he became a professional pilot. He barnstormed in the 1920's, worked as a test pilot , and from 1926 to 1966, he managed the aviation division of Phillips Petroleum. He was president of the Early Birds, an exclusive group who flew before December 17, 1916. Parker held the 44th pilot's license issued in America. He invented the variable-pitch propeller; he continued to fly two pushers he built in 1912 and 1914 at events, well in to the 1960's. Some other pioneer aviator's who signed this book are: Zantford Granville, who with his brothers Thomas, Robert, Mark and Edward founded the Granville Brothers Aircraft Co. and produced the Gee Bee Super Sportster air racers, between 1929 and 1934. Mildred Clema (Baxter) Granger (1893-1983) she held pilot's license #1542. C. Lienesch, inventor of Anilol, an auxilliary fuel for maximum power. Walter J. Carr (1896-1970) who learned to fly in Chicago in a Curtiss Pusher on 14 June 1914. He was a civilian flight instructor in World War I, afterward becoming a barnstormer in a Curtiss Jenny. In June 1929, Carr was to participate in an endurance record with Viola Gentry flying a Cabinaire named "The Answer." He was hospitalized with pneumonia and was replaced with Charles Parkhurst, who died in the attempt to land in fog. Lewis Yancey (1895-1940) and Roger Q. Williams made their historic flight from Old Orchard Beach, Maine to Rome in 1929 - they have signed thus on the FFEP: "Lewis A. Yancey New York to Rome with Roger Williams." Emory B. Bronte (and Ernest L. Smith) navigator and pilot, crew of the Travel Air Model 5000 "City of Oakland" - see photo. Eddie August Schneider (1911-1940) became the youngest person in the U.S. to receive a commercial pilot certificate - he set three transcontinental airspeed records for pilots under the age of 21 in 1930. He died in a mid-air crash in 1940, aged 29. Randall Henderson (1888-1970) a WWI pilot and barnstormer, became the first person to fly into Las Vegas, on May 7, 1920. He later joined the Army Air Corps during WWII. Owen W. Lazenby, "...most of his 30 years of flying has been spent instructing." - from an article in U. S. Army Aviation Digest, Sept. 1959. An excellent, near fine copy of an early aviation book, signed by an august gathering of America's early pilots.
