DIALOGUES OF PLATO Translated Into English With Analyses and Introduction by B[enjamin] Jowett

Oxford Oxford University Press 1931 - 5 volumes. The third edition, new impression. 8vo, publisher’s original maroon polished cloth lettered and decorated in gilt on the spines and stamped in blind with panel designs on the covers, each volume housed in the rare dustjackets. xxxvii, 594; 576; ccxxxi, 543; 645; ccxxxviii, 541 pp. A very fine set, fresh and clean and very handsome withal, the cloth protected by the dustjackets and thus unusually bright and especially well preserved, essentially as pristine, the jackets just a bit mellowed by age and still in quite excellent condition with just some very minor edge-wear occasionally evident. A HIGHLY IMPORTANT WORK AND the best edition of the best translation. Jowett was a great favorite at Oxford University and most famous for his classical translations. Robert Lynd wrote of him in 1925 that "Jowett is one of the few (writers who have the luck to go down to posterity as satellites of the supreme men of genius), and it not likely that for many generations to come English readers will be able to think of Plato without thinking of Jowett’s Plato. He aimed in his translation at producing the effect of an original work." He accomplished this, not at the sake of scholarship or accuracy, and was able to translate the current of life that runs throughout this great masterpiece. These are considered to be by far the best translations of Plato's DIALOGUES. This revised edition contains a new general Preface which recounts the history of the work and gives some appreciation of Jowett's involvement in the study of Plato. As well, there is marginal analysis and an index of subjects and proper names. The sequence of the Dialogues has been changed, and there are other minor changes of form, and textually very few alterations were made but for important corrections and additions.         Grammaire du Vieux Perse [Collection Linguistique, XXXIV]

Librairie Ancienne Honoré Champion, Paris 1931 - Quarto. XXIII, [1], 266pp. Library blue cloth with gold lettering on spine. Original printed wrappers bound in. Originally published in 1915, Antoine Meillet's grammar of the Old Persian language (Grammaire du Vieux Perse) provides an exact description of this language as attested in the then available texts. In this excellent work, Meillet tried to demonstrate how the comparative method of historical linguistics can help describe a language, the subsystems of which are known only in part. Therefore notes of a comparative nature were inserted only wherever they might contribute to the explanation of a textual passage. Thus Meillet dealt essentially with the main characteristics of the phonological and morphological aspects of the language, confining himself to those forms which are attested authentically and could be interpreted with a degree of certainty. By this he also made clear which problems had not yet been solved and which linguistic facts were not yet established with sufficient dependability. In 1931, Emile Benveniste (1902-76), French scholar, eminent Iranist, and one of the greatest linguists of his time, published this new edition, revised and enlarged, of Meillet's "Grammaire du Vieux Perse", a work rendered necessary by the progress of research. Ex-library copy with reference number at tail of spine, and stamp at front free endpaper and upper margin of title. Upper corner of pages slightly bumped. Pages slightly age-toned throughout. Text in French. Binding and interior in overall good+ condition. Second edition completely revised and greatly expanded. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Peau-Brune: De St-Nazaire a La Ciotat. Journal de Bord de F.-L. Schmied

Exquisite unpag. example of Art Deco book design, detailing a 3-month journey the artist undertook with Jean Dunand aboard the schooner Peau-Brune, sailing from St. Nazaire in Brittany, around the Iberian Peninsula and through the Strait of Gibraltar, to the town of La Ciotat on the coast of Provence, fashioned as a logbook with chronological entries related to specific dates, table of contents. Illustrated throughout with approximately 100 beautiful engravings in brilliant colors from various points along the trip, including two full-page plates depicting the ship under sail, both signed by Schmied. Large 4to. Full leather with raised spine, gilt and polychrome wave decoration to front and rear covers, gilt tooling to inside covers with laid blue silk "endpapers", fitted slipcase. Spine slightly shaken, first signature loose in places. N.p. (Lyon) (Société des XXX de Lyon) 1931. From a limited edition of 135 copies, signed by Schmied in several places. Schmied was an important Art Deco painter, illustrator, and bookbinder particularly known for his beautiful limited edition books. He first gained notoriety with his commission to engrave and print the illustrations of Paul Jouve for Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book in 1919. He went on to create several additional pioneering works of books design throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including Les Climats and Le Cantique des Cantiques. His volumes were always expensive to produce and printed in very limited editions, usually no more than 200 copies. He sold his books by bringing sheets of works in progress to Parisian art fairs, with the hopes of getting wealthy art and book collectors to buy a subscription. Once the Great Depression took hold, the economic climate could no longer support the cost of Schmied's books, and he was forced to close his workshop. A gorgeous feat of Art Deco book design; as of March 2016, WorldCat locates five holdings in North America.

TORTURE GARDEN. Translated from the French ... by Alvah C. Bessie. With a Foreword by James Huneker ..

New York: Claude Kendall, 1931.. Octavo, pp. [1-20] 1-284, nine illustrations in text by Jeanette Seelhoff, original marbled boards with black cloth shelf back, spine panel stamped in gold, pictorial endpapers. First edition in English. Translation of LE JARDIN DES SUPPLICES (1898), a novel published at the height of the Dreyfus affair on the eve of the trial of Alfred Dreyfus in Rennes, the result of tinkering with texts designed independently of each other, at different times, in different styles and with different characters. Mirbeau, a French anarchist, wrote the central part of novel as a grotesque caricature of the French political circles of the Third Republic. "A deliriously decadent novel of Oriental exoticism, considering torture as one of the fine arts. Not merely Sadistic, but Sadean, termed by Huneker 'the most damnably cruel book in contemporary fiction.' A definite precursor to the graphic horror fiction of our time; a fin de siecle Clive Barker." - Robert Knowlton. A very unfaithful and very melodramatic theatrical adaptation of the novel was produced by Pierre Chaine and Andre de Lorde and represented Theatre Grand Guignol on 28 October 1922, and two films, both unfaithful, were based on the novel. Bleiler (1948), p. 201. Mild rubbing to edges of boards, hint of fading at upper spine end, a nearly fine copy in very good pictorial dust jacket with wear at edges and 10 mm chip from upper spine end. (#148782)

"Über formal unentscheidbare Sätze der Principia Mathematica und verwandter Systeme I." Offprint from Monatshefte für Mathematik und Physik, XXXVIII, Band I.

Leipzig: Akademische verlagsgesellschaft, 1931. FIRST EDITION. Original printed back wrapper; front wrapper in facsimile (from the copy owned by Princeton University, with Überreicht vom Verfasser printed on top); small stain (from tape?) on bottom corner of first page. Preserved in a full morocco clamshell case. First edition of the first printing of Gödel's Proof, the single most celebrated result in mathematical logic. This paper, On Formally Undecidable Propositions (Incompleteness Theorem) is of legendary rarity. We were only able to locate one copy at Princeton University. Famed mathematician Kurt Gödel proved two extraordinary theorems. His paper showed that arithmetic was incomplete. In any consistent formal system able to describe simple arithmetic, there are propositions that can be neither proved nor disproved on the basis of the system. Thus a larger system may have to be used to prove consistency, and its consistency assumed; all pretty unsatisfactory. Accepted by all mathematicians, these propositions have revolutionized mathematics, showing that mathematical truth is more than logic and computation. It helped tear down the notion that there was anything certain about the universe.. According to philosophy professor Rebecca Goldstein, Gödel was an intellectual heir to Plato, whose sense of alienation from the positivists and post-modernists of the 1940's was only ameliorated by his friendship with Einstein. As Goldstein writes, "That his work, like Einstein's, has been interpreted as not only consistent with the revolt against objectivity but also as among its most compelling driving forces is . . . more than a little ironic." Gödel (1906-1978), an Austrian born philosopher and mathematician, studied at Vienna. He saw much of the development of the positivist school of philosophy and was apparently unconvinced. He investigated the larger logical system put forward by Russell and Whitehead in their Principia mathematica and his resulting paper (above) may well be the most significant event in 20th century mathematics.

        Camps in the Woods

New York: Architectural Book Publishing Co. 1931. Folio. 96pp. Illustrated from photographs by John Wallace Gillies, Inc. and original drawings prepared in the office of the author. Original gilt-decorated cloth; dust jacket. A fine presentation copy, inscribed by Shepard to Godrey Haggard, noted United Kingdom politician who at the time was Consul General to Guatemala. Shepard designed many camps and cottages for the Adirondack League Club, a private landowner's association founded in 1890 in Old Forge (Herkimer County). Included are architectural drawings of private camps, boathouses, outbuildings, interior details, furniture, gates, and fireplaces. This work proved influential in the design of structures in national parks. Of his own work, Shepard wrote " in the design of these camps we see the structural element logically emphasized. Visible construction may be said to stand as an architectural symbol of nature's growth, and these camps make their strongest appeal in the fact that their designs are so definitely based on structure. This is evident in the roof trusses, the peeled log and pole beams and the split pole studs, so frequently used... Every detail possesses some structural significance... Simplicity is the keynote of the design as it is in nature." Some soiling to cloth, a few chips/small losses to jacket at edges.
