Typed Letter Signed ("M.K. Gandhi"), to Sam Higginbottom, discussing his refusal to visit America

Borsad [Gujarat, India], 1931. One page, with one cancellation and one addition in manuscript. 4to. Folding creases, a few pinholes and faint paperclip rust at one corner; fine. One page, with one cancellation and one addition in manuscript. 4to. "And now there is a positive dread about going to America..." Gandhi writes to a close friend and a fellow educator in India about his refusal, in no uncertain terms, to visit America. "On the one hand I am overwhelmed with invitations to go to America including invitations from business managers promising one million dollars. On the other, I have letters from friends whom I know and who dissuade me from the threatened visit. Before the flood gates of correspondence opened I had decided that I could not and should not go to America unless there was a clear call from within. At the present moment I have no such call. On the contrary the inner voice tells me 'No' however attractive a visit to America would always be to me. I feel that the business managers' letters and their dollars have simply confirmed the promptings of the inner voice. And now there is a positive dread about going to America...." A few years earlier Gandhi had turned down another offer by American friends to arrange a lucrative speaking tour, and he never did visit America. Over the years, however, he issued a number of messages addressed explicitly to Americans, who had become fascinated by Gandhi's efforts and example. He delivered one such message in September of 1931, three months after the date of this letter, over the Columbia Broadcasting System, in which he described the struggle for independence and made an "appeal to the conscience of the world to come to the rescue of people dying for regaining its liberty." And an earlier address, of April 1924, read in part: "My message to the businessmen of America is: Understand the inner meaning of the message of the spinning-wheel and you will probably find the solution for the World Peace which I know so many Americans sincerely desire." The present letter dates from a momentous period in the movement for Indian independence, coming a few months after the signing of the Gandhi-Irwin pact and a few months before Gandhi would return to London for the second of three Round Table Conferences with the British government regarding constitutional reform in India. Its recipient, Samuel Higginbottom (1874-1958), was born in Wales to a poor farming family and educated in the United States. In 1910 he founded the Allahabad (India) Agricultural Institute, through which he taught scientific methods of farming, home hygiene, and animal husbandry to the rural poor of India. Higginbottom garnered much acclaim for his efforts, and formed close friendships with Gandhi and Nehru. "[I]n 1927, Higginbottom met and argued with Gandhi about the best methods of rural reconstruction. Although they differed completely, among other tings over the justification of maintaining old cows, and of spinning, Gandhi characteristically concluded that he himself knew little of economics, adding an invitation to Higginbottom to take charge of the rural and economic activities of the [Indian National] Congress" (Chatterjee, The Making of Indian Secularism, p 149). Though Higginbottom declined that position due to the political climate, he did serve on the board of advisors of the All India Village Industries Association organized by Gandhi in 1934.

        Die Leiden des Jungen Werthers

Maastricht: Halcyon Press, 1931. Buckland Wright, John. Octavo. (256)pp. From an edition of 140, this is one of 125 copies on Pannekoek paper. All plates are signed by the illustrator, John Buckland Wright, and the publisher, A.A.M. Stols signs on the colphon page. This is the third book bearing Buckland Wright's illustrations, and it marks his first use of copper engravings for book illustrations. The style employed here is slightly atypical of Buckland Wright, who depicts more bucolic elements without his customary eroticism. Reid notes that this book "is far scarcer than the printed limitation suggests" as "only a relatively few sets of the engravings were printed." Bound in full blue morocco by Louis Malcorps with cover decoration in gilt after a design by Buckland Wright. T.e.g. Housed in the publisher's marbled slipcase, which shows some light shelfwear. Prospectus for another early Buckland Wright title laid in. (Reid A3).

66 Pieces of Original Art for "The Talk of the Town" Section of The New Yorker

      - 66 pieces of original art for the New Yorker. Pen and ink on artists board. Unsigned. Each is roughly 12" x 6.25". The vast majority have a *The New Yorker* Editorial Department slips attached with handwritten advice (mostly of the "Rush!! Must have Proof Final Today" variety). A very few have partial slips or the slips detached. Undated but from the subjects and some of the cultural context, probably largely from the 1950s to the early 1970s. These spot drawings appeared as the first illustration for each weekly version of "The Talk of the Town." Subjects are diverse: grumpy policemen, harried mailmen, air, train, and bus travelers; bookstore browsers; George Washington in New York; a king and queen tossing coins to a crowd; LBJ; an old school main frame computer; a man turning a corner confronted by a truncheon bearing "JD" (juvenile delinquent); a ghost picketing a cemetery; real estate shoppers; a take on New York City seceding from the state of New York; a scientist doing a test on mice; an astronaut in a space capsule; a couple watching a television with someone arguing for "peace"; musical notes picketing to save Carnegie Hall; Richard Nixon on television; various animals: birds, horses, porcupines, frogs, polar bears, groundhogs, monkeys, squirrels, and much more. Soglow was an American cartoonist, probably best known for his long-running syndicated cartoon for King Features, "The Little King" which first appeared in *The New Yorker* in 1931. His pen and ink drawings, usually uncaptioned, were deceptively simple and in many ways they set the standard for "spot art" in the magazine. Soglow drew a significant number of the spot drawings that appeared in "The Talk of the Town" for as long as he was at the magazine, for well over a quarter of a century. They are still being used today. This collection represents a significant amount of his output for the Talk pieces.
