        Mickey Mouse Story Book

David McKay Company Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1931. First edition, first printing.. Fine. Yes. 8vo. (2),62pp. Original tan cloth blocked in black on the upper board; pictorial color pasteon. Nicely done black and white illustrations throughout accompanying the stories about Mickey having Traffic Trouble; going to a Birthday Party; stepping Out; and going Fishin' Around. Minnie and Pluto are featured, as well as the seldom seen Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow. The binding is fine and bright with only a few stray marks, a trace of soil and wear; it is very nice indeed. The text has a few fingering smudges and stains else is fine as well. Overall a truly lovely copy and scarce in this condition. This title seems to have been issued in three bindings: pictorial card covers, cloth spine with pictorial card boards, and full cloth with pictorial pasteon. So far as we can determine, the ful cloth binding is the scarcest of the three.

NY: Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith, (1931). First edition, first issue, first binding. This is Faulkner's sixth novel, which marked his first commercial success. The story was bought by Paramount in 1932 and was adapted twice for film as "The Story of Temple Drake." As with other titles from this era, copies of this book are difficult to obtain in fine condition. This is a very fine copy in a very fine dust wrapper, which shows a couple of minor areas of restoration.

This is the German language version of a brochure promoting tourism in Italy that was issued in several languages. Alberto Capatti & Massimo Montanari write in their book "Italian Cuisine: A Cultural History": "During the two decades of Fascist rule, the exploration of gastronomy was completed by obtaining a complete map of the regions, by sketching out a preliminary inventory of typical products, and by promoting the awareness of local cuisines with books, advertising campaigns, shows, and festivals. The artist Umberto Zimelli was commissioned by ENIT (the Italian National Tourist Board) to create "La carta delle principali specialità gastronomiche delle regioni italiane" (Map of the principal culinary specializations of the Italian regions). This was a map with which foreigners could identify the best products available in the cheese or dessert industry, the best wines and preserved foods, and contemplate steaming bowls of pasta placed between bottles of wine and molds of cheese." A handsome Deco Map - one of the most sought-after items of Italian travel ephemera. .

NY: Knopf, 1931. Second edition, third binding. This edition contains fourteen new poems, while dropping three from the original edition. The complete printing of the second edition consisted of 1,500 copies, which were bound over a period of thirteen years. This copy is inscribed by Stevens on a preliminary blank. The inscription reads: "The basis of poetry is response" and is dated "Sept. 14, 1943." If one could condense Stevens's particular approach to literary creation into a single sentence, this could certainly be it. For Stevens, the pursuit of the real in poetry -- his Supreme Fiction -- is rooted in its immediacy: "Part of the res itself and not about it. / The poet speaks the poem as it is, / Not as it was." Poetry, in Stevens's view, is language used in response to life as it is lived, making this an extraordinary inscription. Stevens signed very infrequently, and inscriptions appear even less often. As a basis for comparison, the Neville copy of this edition, which sold in 2004, was signed ten days after Pearl Harbor and contained a single sentence inscription about war. This is a fine, bright copy in cloth-backed pale blue boards and with the dust wrapper, which is toned along the spine, has a nearly invisible split along the front fold, and has a chip in the upper left corner of the front panel.

The Chimes by Charles Dickens Illustrated by Arthur Rackham Introduction by Edward Wagenknecht Printed in London for Members of the Limited Edition Club 1931 Numbered 1155 of 1500 Copies Worldwide and Signed by Arthur Rackham in Original Slip Case

The Limited Edition Club 1931. This is an absolutely stunning work by the acclaimed Arthur Rackham of Charles Dickens' Christmas Book, The Chimes. The original publisher's slip case has a tan background, the design of which duplicates the endpapers, with the sprites in red and the bell in gold. The titles on the spine are red. There is age marking to the slip case which is complete and of a solid construction, with numbering to the spine which appears to be in the same hand as the Limitation Page where Arthur Rackham has signed (possibly numbered by Arthur Rackham). An extremely attractive and collectible slip case. The book is bound in tan cloth with pictorial stamping in black and gold to the top board, and gold lettering to the spine. The spine is darkened, but the gilt to the spine is incredibly bright. The front board is extremely clean with only slight wear and with the gilt as bright as the day it was issued; and the back board has light marks and very slight fading to a vertical area by the spine - very light and only mentioned for completeness. The boards are in Very Good and attractive condition. There are 128 numbered pages, the top edges being in brilliant gilt and the bottom edges are uncut. The pictorial endpapers are brown on a white background and are in Fine condition. Additionally, there are 6 full page and 14 smaller black and white illustrations throughout the book, with the Frontispiece and Title Page having illustrations to the top of their pages in brown. The pages are very tightly bound in and in Near Fine condition. The Limitation Page bears a large flourishing signature by Arthur Rackham. A beautiful example of this limited edition first edition signed book by Arthur Rackham of this Charles Dickens classic. Definitely one book for your collection

Original cover or wrapper design for The Grey Coast by Neil M. Gunn, The Porpoise Press; four figures in a central cartouche, c.1931, pen and ink, 192 x 251mm overall. The second edition of the novel was published by the Porpoise Press in 1931, an important Scottish publishing house later absorbed by Faber, after first publication by Jonathan Cape in 1926. Neil Gunn was 'arguably the most influential Scottish fiction writer of the first half of the twentieth century' according to Wikipedia. It isn't clear whether Freedman's wrapper design was used and the design wasn't seen by Ian Rogerson when preparing his monograph.

This item comes from the material belonging to the Estate of Barnett Freedman, which is now offered for sale; the Estate consists of proofs of images of all kinds, Christmas cards, original book designs and proofs of dust wrappers, posters, original artwork and much more. Where appropriate, items will bear the studio stamp 'Barnett Freedman Estate', a blind-stamped legend in a circle.

FRONTE, rivista bimestrale d'arte e di letteratura. Primo Fasc. n. 1 (giugno 1931), Roma, Tip. Camera dei Deputati, 1931

cm. 28 x cm. 21,5 - brossura.

Sentiment goes on; unaffrighted by the roarings of the young lions and lionesses of Bloomsbury, Bittersweet goes on, too; and Mr. Cochran [Charles Cochran, the producer] (being a sentimentalist), has wished that his survival should be commemorated by me in some sentimental drawings, which are here submitted to you." Along with Coward, there are portraits of Peggy Wood, Georges Metaxa, Ivy St. Helier, and Cochran - each signed by the subject on the mount

THE BLANKET OF THE DARK. Inscribed

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1931 Buchan, John. THE BLANKET OF THE DARK. London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1931. First Edition. 8vo. 314pp. + adverts. Cloth. Presentation Copy. A very good example showing moderate use in an excellent supplied near fine dustwrapper that has been expertly & modestly restored. Signed & inscribed by the author on the half-title page: "Alice Massey/with love/John Buchan/July:16:31". Alice Massey was the wife of Vincent Massey, the first Canadian born Governor General of Canada (1952-1959), a position also held by Buchan from 1935 to 1940. A superb Association Copy. This tale of Peter Pentecost, a clerk at the great abbey of Osney just outside Oxford whose life is turned upside down when he discovers he is the son of the last Duke of Buckingham, sixth in descent from Edward III, and should by rights be King instead of Henry VIII. Buchan skilfully weaves the story of the young clerk, around a tale of intrigue against the king, where "under the blanket of the dark all men are alike and all are nameless" Peter is destined to disappear "into a world of which there has been no chronicle, the heaths and forests of old England"; Buchan has spun this compelling tale of early sixteenth-century England, lived under perhaps the most repellant figure to sit on the English throne which he describes. "the face was vast and red as a new ham, a sheer mountain of a face".. Signed by Author. First Edition.

Ein Ghetto im Osten - Wilna [A Ghetto in the East]

Orell Fussli Zurich and Leipzig: Orell Fussli. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, illustrated with 65 images of the Jewish ghetto in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius. With preface by poet Zalman Chneour in Hebrew and German. "In the same year that his Paris was published, Moï Ver - under his real name of Moshé Vorobeichic- produced Ein Ghetto im Osten (A Ghetto in the East). The book, with both Hebrew and German text, featured his photographic record of the Jewish ghetto in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, documenting a way of life that would soon disappear under terrible circumstances. Even more so than Paris, Ein Ghetto im Osten was ostensibly a documentary book, but as he had done in his view of the French city, Moï Ver could not resist pushing the envelope of the documentary form. Once again, he used a variety of New Vision strategies, the most obvious being to take many images from upstairs windows looking on to the narrow streets of Vilnius's old Jewish quarter. This creates odd angles and a dynamic mise en scène for his pictures of people going about their everyday business on the street...But Moï Ver didn't stop there. He also introduced cinematic cutting and montaging techniques to heighten the interest... A poignancy has been added [to Ein Ghetto im Osten] in hindsight: it was made at the beginning of a desperately traumatic time for European Jewry" (Parr/Badger, The Photobook).Zurich and Leipzig: Orell Fussli, 1931. Small octavo, publisher's photo-illustrated boards. Very minor rubbing, some light soiling, generally an excellent copy.

        Hollywood Wife

      G. Howard Watt New York: G. Howard Watt. 1931. First. First edition. Bookplate of actor Jean Hersholt, a tiny tear at the crown, near fine in near fine dustwrapper (with art by Crary) with tiny nicks. An exotic tale of Hollywood orgies, it is not clear whether this is fact or fiction, but most likely some combination of both. Inscribed by the author: "To Jean Hersholt, a 'Hollywoodite' whom I am proud to know. Anabel Lane 'Miss Anonymous.'" Laid in is a two-page Autograph Letter Signed from Lane to Hersholt, recounting her trip across country by motor car, her health, a visit from her publisher, and a mention of "Von," possibly Erich Von Stroheim. Hersholt, the Danish actor best known for such roles as the grandfather in Shirley Temple's Heidi and after whom the famous Humanitarian Award was named, was an avid collector of first editions. Lane was a columnist and film critic, as near as we can tell. .

Np. 1931. [Np]. 1931.. Original lithograph, printed against tinted background and colored. 44.5 x 32.5 cm plus full margins. Small chip from extreme lower left margin, otherwise about fine. Matted. One of an unspecified edition, dated and signed in the stone, and signed and dated in pencil in the lower margin. George Kenneth Hartwell (1891-1949) was born in Fitchberg, Mass, and studied at the Art Students' League in New York City under Kenneth Hayes Miller, Edward Hopper and George Bellows. His work was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago (1923), the Society of Independent Artists (1923), the Library of Congress (1944-46), the Laguna Beach Art Association (1945 and 1946) and the Carnegie Institute (1945), Hartwell worked as an illustrator for CENTURY, SCRIBNER'S and THEATRE ARTS. He is particularly known for his Depression-era depictions of the worlds of carnivals, sideshows and burlesque houses, of which this image is fine example. He executed this lithograph in at least four variations, monochrome, tinted and with at least two forms of coloring, as here.

        SERMILIK FJORD [Original Color Lithograph]

New York: George Miller 1931. [New York: George Miller, [1931].. Landscape format, image size 33.5 x 47 cm, plus margins. Professionally matted and framed for the former owner under UV Plexi. Not examined out of frame, but visibly about fine, with a very minimum amount of the typical fading to the fugitive blue. A beautiful example of one of Kent's best lithographs, and one of his uncommon undertakings with color. In addition to the primary lithograph in black and white, a blue tint was printed from a lithograph stone, and a reddish-brown color was added via a zinc plate. An edition of 150 copies was prepared, each signed by Kent in the margin, and the stones and plate were effaced. The image depicts an encampment along the Fjord, and it is one of the most significant separate prints based on Kent's periods of residence in Greenland between 1929 and 1935. BURNE JONES 65.         Hill and Paul Landacre Signature

Los Angeles: Bruce McCallister, 1931. Custom framed in Ivory Rag board and 1 inch Black Satin Lacquer moulding with conservation glass. Sized to 17.25 x 19.25 inches. First printing Fine Fine condition. Image: 8 x 6 inches, sheet size: 9.5 x 12.5 inches. Printed by Harold Young from the original block on wove paper with a NAVARRE 1547 watermark, this wood-engraving is from a collection of unbound portfolio plates engravinged by Paul Landacre which became the basis for his most coveted work: California Hills and Other Wood Engravings; McCallister, Los Angeles 1931. Strictly limited to an edition of 500, the bound volumes are quite scarce, and carry a dark admonition from St. Nicholas of Arrinstine, in Latin of course, for those intent on destroying the volumes for the images. This wood-engraving was never bound, and thus perfect to be treasured for the beauty of its composition. Without question one of the finest wood-engravers of the 20th century, Paul Hambleton Landacre (American 1893-1963) inspired a future generation of engravers with his confident and rhythmic patterning of contrasting lines of varying thickness, carved from wood. Through his talent and commitment to perfection he held a firm place in the brotherhood of such artist/luminaries as Rockwell Kent, Lynd Ward, and Fritz Eichenberg. The engravings by Landacre undoubtedly set the standard by which all wood-engraving is judged. It takes true genius to coax the vision of illumination, thus light from darkness, from a simple piece of end grain boxwood, and through his refined technique, Landacre's carvings truly become the American Landscape: the vastness, majesty or serenity of the fields, shores, mountains and dunes of the early 20th century California landscape, the furry of a prairie grass fire as only previously described by Willa Cather, or the elegance of a woodland nymph amid the dappled sunlight of eucalyptus trees. By the late 19th century, wood-engraving had all but degenerated into a means of didactic mass illustration, often created by a craftsman, void of the artist's inherent vision. In essence, thorough his commitment to the process and integrity of the wood-engraved technique, Landacre returned the responsibility, and joy, of vision, emotion and thus execution to the artist-engraver. In his article on the technique of engraving wood, Landacre states: "Even a dull sketch may become fascinating by virtue of the change into crisp white lines against the black and challenging nature of the medium. All sins are forgiven as you enter a new field with your design and even the fact that the lines are created by pushing the tool from you instead of pulling toward you, as in other forms of graphic expression, adds zest to the process".
