The World Crisis, Canadian first editions

Macmillan, Toronto, 1923-1931 - The Canadian edition is very similar to the first American edition, with only changes being the publisher?s imprint on the spine and title pages. The set originally appeared from 1923-27 as 3 volumes published in 4 : Vol I: 1911-1914; Vol II: 1915; Vols III, IV: 1916-1918 in two parts. Subsequently in 1929, a further volume (4 or 5) appeared as The Aftermath. Then still later in 1931 a final supplementary volume was published The Unknown War ( The Eastern Front) .An impressive set, uniformly bound in reddish brown cloth, gilt title on spine and on front cover. Numerous maps and plans, some folding and coloured. The only illustrations are 8 photos of key personalities in the final volume. Large thick books, 6.25 x 9 inches. Vol. I has a dull almost unreadable spine, like its American cousin, owner name on endpaper, front hinge weak. Vol. II clean and tight, owner name. Vol 3, 4 are clean, tight, no names. Vol 5 clean, tight, edges tanned. Final volume toned on spine, owner name on endpaper, photocopy of original dj available. In 25 years, this is only the third such set I have offered. (A31aa).         JOURNALS. HOOK And LADDER COMPANY No. 27, New York City Fire Department, The Bronx. # 79: September 8, 1931 - December 22, 1931. # 83: November 25, 1932 - May 4, 1933.

1931 / 1933, [New York]: 1931 - Hook and Ladder Company No. 27 was originally part of Combined Engine Company 46 - Bronx, which was organized on July 11, 1881. The Company moved to new quarters at 451 E. 176th Street on April 1, 1895. The Combined Engine Company was disbanded in order to organize Engine 46 and Hook and Ladder Company 27 on June 1, 1904. In a NYTimes article of April 18, 1904, it was announced that Fire Commissioner Hayes had established a new Fire Department Battalion in the Bronx, to be known as the Seventeenth. This Battalion included Hook and Ladder Company 27. Hook and Ladder Company 27 was located at 453 E. 176th Street. The Company was relocated to new quarters at 460 Cross Bronx Expressway on November 6, 1972 at which time it was disbanded to organize Ladder 58.The two journals provide an in-depth and fascinating glimpse into the daily operations of one of New York's finest, Hook and Ladder Company No. 27. Noted down to the minute are the times the men came on duty and when they were relieved; when drills took place; inspections; testing of the telegraph equipment; who was on house watch and when he was relieved; exactly when an alarm came in, by what method, and from what station. Certain members of the Company were more complete in their entries stating that the Company and apparatus responded to alarm, where they found the fire and when they returned to the station. A nice set documenting a segment of the NYFD's long illustrious history. As to be expected with volumes put to daily use, the bindings are worn & soiled, with fraying front joint cloth to #79. Nevertheless, an About VG - VG set. Brown pebbled cloth quarter bound with red leather. Pink paper labels with inclusive dates on spines; journal number written in black ink over-written in white ink. 14" x 8-1/2" [36 cm x 23 cm]. 2 volumes. 1000 numbered pages.         Study for 'Ball Beauty']

      - This image of a Balinese women is one of the iconic mages of Miguel Covarrubias's series of paintings, prints, and drawings about the island of Bali. Cocarrubias made two trips to the Indonesian locale, one in 1931 and one in 1933, both funded by either artist prizes or fellowships. After spending months immersed in the culture, he and his wife published "The Island Of Bali," a personal account of his experiences and introduction to Balinese culture, accompanied by his drawings and her photographs. Aspects of Balinese society detailed included family and village life, rice farming, Bali-Hindu religion, ceremonies, history, drama, art and dance. The book and its marketing were major contributors to the New York Bali craze of the 1930s. In 1936, an image entitled "Bali Beauty," for which this print was likely a study, was featured on the cover of Vanity Fair. The print is in very good condition with full margins. Small chips to upper and lower margins not affecting the image. José Miguel Covarrubias Duclaud (1904%u20141957) was a Mexican painter and caricaturist, ethnologist and art historian. He is best known for his research on Mesoamerican art, particularly of the Olmec culture. On the side, his drawings and caricatures garnered him a fair amount of attention and were published widely in The New Yorker and Vanity Fair, among others. This iconic image from his Bali series not only represents his work, it also points back to a vibrant time in New York cultural history. Lithograph. Artist's proof. Signed in lower right and inscribed "For Ellie." Image measures 11 x 8.5". Sheet measures 16.25 x 13".

Hierbei soll besonders auch versucht werden, das schwierigste und interessanteste Problem der Handschrift, die Frage nach Alter und Herkunft derselben, einer Lösung näher zu bringen.; - Mit 26 Tafeln. - Hs.         PIRATES IN OZ

Chicago: Reilly & Lee, 1931. Thompson, Ruth Plumly. PIRATES IN OZ. Chicago: Reilly & Lee, (1931). First Edition, First State. Illustrated by John R. Neill with 12 color plates stock coated on only the printed side, tipped-in facing title page and pages 48, 64, 80, 104, 128, 144, 160, 176, 208, 256 & 272. A sharp and bright VERY GOOD PLUS copy (lightly worn with one scratch to the pictorial pastedown) in the publisher's medium green cloth (the color of which may indicate earliest printing). Endpapers browned, child's name in pencil on ownership leaf. Spine imprint in boldface. Very nice example which has been married to a bright NEAR FINE later issue DJ (lightly worn). Outer edges of pages stained yellow as called for. All first edition points as referenced in Bibliographia Oziana, (Hanff, Greene, Martin, Greene and Haff, 1988). 25th book in the famous Wizard of Oz series. Mari Ness, in an interesting review of PIRATES IN OZ published online, points to the plot as reflecting Plumly's conservative belief system, as the story conveys that "things do not go well when people remove their leaders, forcibly or not." Ness also speculates on whether Plumly understood the true meaning of the word DORK which is the name of a Duke in this adventure. Unfortunately it is too late for us to ask. . First Edition. Very Good Plus/Near Fine. Illus. by John R. Neill.

Women's Yearbook "The Lamp of 1931" Inscribed with Poem

Auburndale, MA: Lasell Seminary for Young Women, 1931. First Edition. Very good+ copy.. First Edition. 76th Annual Commencement for Lasell Seminary for Young Women, Tuesday, June 9, 1931. This prestigious women's college became Lasell Junior College in 1932. Millay was named in 1931 as "honorary class member", and is so listed, with her picture, in the yearbook. This copy of the yearbook has been inscribed to a member of the Junior Class by Millay, who has also written out a very characteristic poem which reads in full "Our life is but a slender thread/ We try to spin a clever web/ To try to catch a few bright days/ Before it's whisked away/ Edna St. Vincent Millay" on the front flyleaf. Laid in is the original program for the commencement exercises, which also mentions Millay's "induction". An Interesting and unusual souvenir of the famous poet, then still in her prime. The yearbook also contains several signed drawings and lithographs by class members - some of whom became artists later on. Small 4to limp black cloth.

[In Russian:] KONSTRUKTSIYA ARKHITEKTURNYKH I MASHINYKH FORM [Constructions of the Architectural Forms and Forms of Machines]

Leningrad: Society of Architects, 1931.. 232pp., 40 numbered plates, plus leaf of adverts. Quarto. Original printed green paper boards. Over 300 illustrations in text. Boards a bit rubbed and bumped, with characteristic edge and corner wear, a few pencil notes, but a very good copy of a perishable book, with the fragile backstrip intact. First edition of the second of Chernikov's monumental works on architectural design. Chernikhov (1889 - 1951) joined the architecture department of the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1916. In 1927 he organized in Leningrad his own Science and Research Pilot Laboratory for Architectural Shapes and Graphical Studies, where with a group of students and assistants he became actively involved in experimental and design work. He was both influenced by and a participant in the innovations surrounding the later years of constructivism and suprematism, and in a series of four major published works, concluding with 101 ARCHITECTURAL FANTASIES (1933), he left a legacy of inspiration for future generations of designers, architects and typographers.

Mount Zion or In Touch with the Infinite

London: The James Press, [1931]. First edition of the author's first book, Peterson's "ordinary issue". 8vo. Full-page illustrations (6 by Hugh de Cronin Hastings) printed in blue on salmon paper (rectos only); illustrations in text, ornamental borders. Text leaves printed in brown on green paper. Pp. 57, [1, imprint], [2, blank]. Pink and gold firecracker paper over boards, pictorial title label to upper cover. Spine darkened, ends bumped, deftly rebacked preserving spine, page edges faintly toned. Inscribed in ink by the author opposite the title page. Very good copy of an exceedingly fragile book. Peterson A1a (with note at p. 7 idemtifying this copy). Provenance: Estate of Duncan Andrews . Inscribed "That clever man, Oswald Blakeston, from that other clever man, John Betjeman". Oswell Blakeston (1907-1985), born Henry J. Hasslacher, was a novelist, poet, filmmaker, and film critic, who had, at time of publication of Betjeman's book, recently made an abstract film, Light Rhythms, and published his own first book, Poems, a Single Word! (ca. 1930). A fragile book; Peterson cites another copy inscribed by Betjeman to Duncan Andrews "- made of fireworks paper supplied by Brock's. They usually go at the spine" (that copy now at Yale). The Duncan Andrews collection of John Betjeman went to Yale in 1994, with some further additions during Mr. Andrews' lifetime. First book of the celebrated author, with an urbane inscription, and notable provenance

The Economics of Inflation - A Study of Currency Depreciation in Post-War Germany 1914-1923 - Sir Halley Stewart Publications IV

New York: Barnes & Noble Inc.. Hardcover. 464 pages. Index. Originally published in Italian in 1931. This first English edition substantially revised. Inside front boar is the bookplate of M.L. Burstein "One of the sharpest minds in economics of the last century" - from online reference. "The depreciation of the mark of 1914-1923, which is the subject of this work, is one of the outstanding episodes in the history of the twentieth century. Not only by reason of its magnitude but also by reason of its effects, it looms large on our horizon. It was the most colossal thing of its kind in history: and, next probably to the Great War itself, it must bear responsibility for many of the political and economic difficulties of our generation. It destroyed the wealth of the more solid elements in German society; and it left behind a moral and economic disequilibrium, apt breeding ground for the disasters which have followed." - from Foreword. Gilt lettering legible upon blue backstrip which is sunned along with portions of each board. Bit of writing inside front board otherwise clean and unmarked. Binding intact. A sound association copy of this important work. . Good. 1937. First English Edition.

[Three Original Prints of Photographs Taken by Rockwell Kent at Jakobshavn (Ilulissat) Baffin Bay, Greenland]

[Np]. [c. 1931-1935, but possibly printed somewhat later].. Three original glossy black & white 7" x 5" gelatin silver prints. Slight surface variations characteristic of ferrotyping, and some spotting, scratches and other blemishes in the negatives are evident in the prints, one negative printed slightly askew, with some oxidation in the lower blank border, otherwise very good. Until his death Rockwell Kent maintained a collection of at least 31 albums of prints of his photographs, arranged, identified and labeled according to locations/subjects. In that collection, the prints are occasionally identified by Kent in ink or bear his stamp. These three prints are duplicates from that personal archive, and correspond to images gathered in the album labeled by Kent: "Greenland Jakobshavn." The first image, identified on the verso in pencil in an unknown hand as "RK-4-20" (a denotation recording the album and sequence of the particular image) is a view of the Port of Jakobshavn (Ilulissat) in Disko Bay, a wide inlet of Baffin Bay in the Qaasuitsup Municipality in western Greenland, located 120 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The image is of five clapboard buildings in a rocky port village, one building with the Danish flag prominently flying at full staff, with a few fishing boats in the sea in the foreground. The second, identified as "RK-4- 19," is of a whaling kayak on the rocky and pebble strewn shore of Disko Bay with coastal mountains and the Jakobshavn Glacier in the background. The third image, identified as "RK-4-21," depicts the coastal glacial mountains in Disko Bay, with an iceberg calved from the Jakobhavn Glacier floating in the Bay. Kent frequently recorded scenes, people and settings via photographs during his voyages and travels, many of which he utilized as reference material, and are identifiable as such, in the production of his illustrations, prints and paintings made during and after his journeys. Kent made three trips to Greenland, first in 1929, and then in 1931-2 and 1934-5. These images date from the later period. Although obviously best known for his works on paper and paintings, Kent was sufficiently renowned as a photographer during the 1930s that some of his photographs were reproduced in photogravure in a portfolio, MODERN MASTERS OF PHOTOGRAPHY, SERIES 1 PICTORIALISTS, published by the Galleon Press. While those photogravures turn up separately with some frequency - usually well outside of their original context in the portfolio - individual original prints from negatives of Kent's photographs are scarce. We note as reference the appearance of a single Greenland print, also duplicated in the core archive, and in the same format, but with Kent's ink rubber stamp on the verso: Swann Galleries, 15 May 2008, Lot 341, ($1300).
