        The Rise of the Goldbergs

New York/Newark: Barse & Co.. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. (c.1931). First Edition. Hardcover. (price-clipped) [a lightly-worn book, with a minor bump to the top rear corner and some slight dust-soiling to the top edge; jacket is bright and colorful, with some very minor paper loss at spine ends (no loss of text), some internal dampstaining to the rear panel with only negligible effect to the exterior]. (frontispiece photo of Gertrude Berg) "The Rise of the Goldbergs" (the title was eventually shortened to simply "The Goldbergs") debuted as a 15-minute weekly program on NBC radio in November of 1929, and was an immediate hit. The show became a daily broadcast in 1931, the same year this book appeared, and by which time (per the book's introduction) NBC had received "so many requests .... for copies of the episodes that it has been found advisable to publish the first volume with subsequent volumes to follow." (Essentially, then, these are radio scripts rendered into short-story form.) The radio series ran through 1946 and was subsequently adapted for both Broadway ("Molly and Me") and as an early TV series -- but interestingly, although the intro to this book even mentions "numerous offers...from moving picture producers," they didn't get around to making a "Goldbergs" movie until 1950. (One can easily imagine Samuel Goldwyn sagely declaring the property "too Jewish!") The colorful dustjacket, with a cartoon illustration of the Berg clan, is a genuine rarity. .

On April 8, 1955, one year after Hemingway won the Nobel Prize for Literature, Drew and Hemingway spent a long afternoon discussing literature and teaching, later recounted by Drew in his article "Unedited Notes on a Visit to Finca Vigia" (in Bruccoli, Conversations With Ernest Hemingway, 89-98), an account remarkable for its portrayal of Hemingway's modesty and generosity. The first bibliography of Hemingway. .

        The Good Earth

John Day Company, New York 1931 - "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck. Published by John Day Company, New York, 1931. First edition, first printing. The copyright page states "COPYRIGHT, 1931, BY PEARL S. BUCK" and there is no mention of subsequent printings. The bottom of the copyright page says "FOR THE JOHN DAY COMPANY". Winner of the 1932 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The rare original dust jacket is from the fourteenth printing which we purchased and then married to the first edition of the book. The first state dust jacket is extremely rare and is worth at least $15,000 depending on condition. At the bottom of the spine of the dust jacket is the publisher's name, John Day, though it is very worn (pictured above). This indicates that the jacket is a trade edition and not a book club edition dust jacket. The dust jacket is in good to good plus condition. Moderate to severe chipping to the edges, especially the spine. Moderate creasing to the flap folds and the spine along with some sun damage. The book is in very good plus condition. There is a previous owner's signature on the front endpaper. The tan colored cloth boards are very well preserved and the gilt lettering and design on the spine and front board remains intact; This book has the brown top stain. Slight wear to the edges on the bottom corners of the front and rear boards and spine; along with some wear to the bottom edge of the text block. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Sermilik Fjord

(1931) 1931 - Measuring 19 1/2 by 14 1/2 inches in a 31 1/4 by 26-inch frame, this lithograph is a unique signed proof printed in three colors. Whereas the original edition of 150 proofs featured a blue tint printed from stone and a reddish brown tint printed from a zinc plate, this proof displays these hues along with a greenish tint. Burne Jones mentions "trial proofs of all the colors done separately" formerly in the collections of Kent and George Miller; however, he does not describe a proof printed in three colors. Later, the stone from which the key drawing and blue tones were printed was "canceled and reground for subsequent reuse by George Miller." Additionally, "the zinc plate was destroyed." The lithograph depicts a camping scene along the shores of Sermilik Fjord on the east coast of Greenland. Kent lived in Greenland sporadically between 1929 and 1935. Based on his time there and the people he met, he wrote two of his greatest books: Greenland Journal and Salamina. The proof is matted and preserved in a lovely wooden frame with a scalloped design. This is a very rare and wonderful piece of art by one of twentieth-century America's greatest illustrators. (Burne Jones #67) [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

On the Edge of the Primeval Forest; More from the Primeval Forest [Signed]

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1931. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing (spine ends pushed, modest rubbing to spine ends and board corners, modest shelf wear to the bottom edge of each board), in a Very Good dust jacket with chips and tears strengthened by tape repairs to the dust jacket's verso, the front flap has been corner clipped, but has not been price clipped), SIGNED BY ALBERT SCHWEITZER on the half-title; the definitive work on the most notable activity of this Physician, Philosopher, medical missionary, organ virtuoso, Bach authority, New Testament Scholar, author, and winner of the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize. In 1912, Albert Schweitzer, who had obtained a medical degree for the purpose of relocating to Africa in order to assist its denizens, both as a response to Jesus' call to become "fishers of men" and as a personal recompense for the historic guilt of European colonizers, embarked with his wife for Africa where he had volunteered to serve at his own expense in Paris Missionary Society's mission at Lambaréné on the Ogooué river, in what then was a French Colony and what is now the nation of Gabon. Upon the outbreak of World War 1, he and his wife, Germans living in a French Colony, were interned in France (to which they needed to go to permit Albert Schweitzer's recovery from anemia and exhaustion). In 1924, Schweitzer returned to Lambaréné without his wife to resurrect his work there and to grow the hospital that he and his wife had founded, and it was at Lambaréné that he then spent most of his remaining life and where he died. Schweitzer authored two books on his time and work at Lambaréné, "Zwischen Wasser und Urwald" (On the Edge of the Primeval Forest -- A. & C. Black, London 1922) and Mitteilungen aus Lambaréné (More from the Primeval Forest -- A. & C. Black, 1931, published in America as "The Forest Hospital at Lambaréné"). The book herein described constitutes the first edition in English containing both works. (The first UK edition of the combined works was not published until 1948.) In presenting the Prize, Gunnar Jahn, the then-Chairman of the Nobel Committee, spoke extensively of Schweitzer's early years and how they prepared him for, and led him to, his service in at Lambaréné. It was during his time there that Schweitzer crystallized his philosophy into one simple concept: Reverence for Life. As Jahn stated: "One day in 1915 - he was forty years old at the time - while traveling on a river in Africa, he saw the rays of the sun shimmering on the water, the tropical forest all around, and a herd of hippopotamuses basking on the banks of the river. At that moment there came to him, as if by revelation, the phrase which precisely expressed his thought: Reverence for life. Once again, as before in youth and childhood, a simple incident opened the door for him." Thus it was at Lambaréné that he crystallized the motivating philosophy of his life, the philosophy of which was born his humanitarian work, the very work which served as the foundation for his winning the Prize. In our experience, signed copies of this important book do not appear often. A Very Good copy of the work which encompasses the most important period of Albert Schweitzer's life and the humanitarian work for which he received the Nobel Peace Prize, SIGNED BY ALBERT SCHWEITZER.
