Light foxing to illustrated end-papers and initial/last pages, else Fine. Limited to seven hundred and seventy-five copies, of which this is No. 161, signed by illustrator Arthur Rackham. Latimore, Haskell p. 66-67; Coigney 312; Izaak Walton's famous Discourse of Fish and Fishing for the perusal of Anglers was originally published in 1653. The text is from the fifth edition of 1676, the last to be revised by the author, but the spelling is modernized. Includes twelve color illustrations by Arthur Rackham .

The autobiography of Jon Olafsson, Traveler to the Indies, remained unprinted in Icelandic, save for a few excerpts, until 1908-9, when an edition by Sigfus Blondal, Librarian to the Royal Library, was published in Copenhagen by the Icelandic Literary Society. The text in this edition, which was based on a scholarly collation of the extant MMS., has been implicitly followed in the English translation.         This Side of Paradise

      Charles Scribner's Sons [Scribners; Scribner], New York 1931 - A near fine book in a good original dustjacket. The book is the uncommon 17th printing (1931); according to Bruccoli, there were 290 copies of it. The dustjacket is the eleventh printing (March 1921). Though surviving jackets from early printings are routinely married to better books, I'm prepared to believe this book and jacket have been together their whole lives. The boards and gilding are bright, with minute losses at "SCRIBNERS" consistent with chipping to the dustjacket. The front hinge is tender but holding; the spine is a little cocked; there's a shadow at the first blank from a clipping once laid in, which carries faintly onto the half-title. The book is excellent. The dustjacket has suffered some chips and tears, and may owe its survival to some long-ago tape reinforcements, shadows from which remain. Still, when one can find a jacket for this book at all, many things can be forgiven. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Original beige paper-covered boards with unlettered beige cloth spine, with dust jacket. First Edition, printed in France, of which this is one of twenty copies on Auvergne hand-made paper designated "Not For Sale," as specified in the Publisher's Note. (There were also 595 numbered copies on Auvergne, plus 50 copies on Guarro Spanish rag paper.) The fifty drawings by Calder are quite whimsical, along the lines of his wire sculptures for which he is considerably more famous. This is a near-fine copy; the very scarce dust jacket, on which is reproduced one of Calder's drawings, is near-fine as well (very slight wear at the corners, one small chip out of the front flap). A very good copy in the lightly rubbed jacket with a few short closed tears, repairs to the ends of the spine including the publisher's imprint replaced by that from another jacket in the same series, and slight dampstain to the lower panel. First photoplay edition, first printing. Published to accompany the 1931 Universal Pictures film starring Boris Karloff, who appears on the jacket.

Guthrie], dated 31 August 1931, answering Gutherie's letter of 16. July. "It is very gratifying that your Forum has discussed my book. [LAST AND FIRST MEN], and found it helpful to some extent in spite of. its omissions. I was interested to see the June number of your 'Good. News for All,' and I feel that though there are many differences. between our points of view, we are also working in the same direction. in many respects." (#130811).       - Collezione tutta a fascicoli sciolti (cm.17 x 25) , brossure in buone condizioni, pagine variabili. Le copertine, con soli titoli, sono di colori diversi per ogni annata. Questa prestigiosa rivista può essere considerata l'erede della mitica RIVIERA LIGURE (1895-1919), che illuminò la cultura italiana del primo novecento, riaffermando a distanza di 10 anni la vocazione ligure per la poesia e la letteratura. Ha vissuto in un periodo culturale intenso dominato dall'editoria milanese e fiorentina e forse non ha avuto i meritati riconoscimenti. E' assai curioso notare come la collezione sia presente in alcune biblioteche italiane, ma spesso con lacune, discendendo il fenomeno dalla scarsa tiratura iniziale e forse anche dalla carenza di pubblicit? all'epoca. La linea editoriale di CIRCOLI ebbe vari sussulti e conviene dar conto delle modificazioni avvenute lungo gli anni. Il primo numero uscì a Genova presso lo stab. Grafico Editoriale, con data gennaio - febbraio 1931 e periodicit? bimestrale. Essa era diretta da Adriano Grande ed il comitato di direzione era composto da Angelo Barile, Guglielmo Bianchi, Giacomo Debenedetti, Eugenio Montale, Camillo Sbarbaro e Sergio Solmi. Con il primo numero del 1932 scompare il comitato di direzione ed i direttori diventano due (Adriano Grande e Guglielmo Bianchi). A cominciare dal numero 1 del 1934 la rivista è diretta soltanto da Adriano Grande e del nuovo comitato di direzione fanno parte Angelo Barile, Guglielmo Bianchi, Giacomo Prampolini, Raffaello Prati e Sergio Solmi. Il trasferimento a ROMA ha luogo con il numero di marzo - aprile (2) dello stesso anno 1934. Questo spostamento coincide con un calo dell'intensit? operativa della rivista che negli anni precedenti aveva proposto autentici capolavori con i poeti più prestigiosi, Montale (si può affermare che Circoli rivelò la sua poesia), Sbarbaro, Quasimodo, Pea, Capasso, Barile, Adriano Grande, Umberto Saba, Giorgio Vigolo, Mario Praz, Sergio Solmi, Giani Stuparich, Sinisgalli, De Pisis, Sandro Penna, Attilio Bertolucci, ecc. e con straordinarie traduzioni di poeti e scrittori stranieri : Joyce, Guillen, Eliot, Dos Passos, Max Jacob, Jean Cocteau, George Stefan, Hemingway, vari scrittori europei ecc.) Famoso il numero speciale (6 del nov-dic 1933) interamente dedicato alla poesia americana. In tutto ciò ripercorrendo l'esempio di Solaria e del Convegno di Ferrieri. Nel numero 2 del 1931, ci sono scritti e disegni di Leo Longanesi. Anche Malaparte collaborò con alcuni scritti. CIRCOLI ebbe anche una intensa attivit? editoriale (basti pensare alla prima edizione di Oboe Sommerso di Quasimodo nel 1932 ). Durante tutto il 1935 c'è un comitato direttivo (Giuseppe Agnino, Enrico Falqui, Marcello Gallian, Adriano Grande, Giuseppe Ungaretti. Molto interessanti gli scritti e le poesie di Ungaretti, Bartolini, Comisso, Alfonso Gatto, ma nel contempo compaiono firme "politiche" (Interlandi, Gallian, Pavolini, Bottai). Per tutto il 1936 le pubblicazioni vengono sospese ed alla ripresa con il 1937 la rivista da bimestrale si trasforma in mensile con nuovi redattori (Raffaello Prati, Rocco Cartoscelli, Attilio Dabini, Indro Montanelli, Glauco Natoli, Salvatore Valitutti sotto la direzione di Grande ed Agnino. Nel 1938 entrer? poi anche Carlo Bernard. Nel 1939 cambier? anche veste tipografica e nell'aprile Guglielmo Danzi sostituisce Agnino. Con il numero di Settembre Adriano Grande lascia Circoli che chiuder? poi nel dicembre dello stesso 1939. A lovely copy, illustrated throughout with Shepard`s beautiful line drawings and decorative map endpapers. Publishers original dark green cloth with the front cover showing Toad, Ratty and Mole, all stamped in gilt. Spine lettered in gilt. Neat previous owners name on half title and at top of the front map endpaper otherwise a fine, bright copy in the original illustrated dustwrapper. There is some rubbing, mostly to the edges, and minor chipping to the corners but overall it is still a very good, clean example of this scarce wrapper. The thirty eighth edition of the book overall, this is the first to feature the wonderful drawings by Shepard which haven't been out of print since. After his drawings for the A. A. Milne Pooh books, these are Shepard's most enduring, & endearing, illustrations.

Original orange cloth, titles to spine and front cover in black, rule in blind to top and bottom of boards, publisher's device in blind to bottom of fore edge corner. Blue ink stamp of F. C. B. Fleetwood-Hesketh, Lieutenant-Colonel with the Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry with to front free endpaper; occasional light pencil underlining. Cloth a touch soiled, endpapers lightly tanned, text block slightly strained in places but still firm. Otherwise an excellent copy. First edition, first impression, hardback issue (the book was issued simultaneously as a paperback). Although the print run is unknown for both issues, the hardback is by far scarcer. The 30s are characterized as Churchill's wilderness years, with his unrelenting opposition to Hitler being seen as main cause for his ostracism. However "another, and earlier reason lay in his bitter opposition to Baldwin's India policy … Churchill had always hit hard; not for him a round of gentlemanly sparring between friends. His fight to maintain full control of India employed not just the clenched fist but the bludgeon" (Woods, Artillery of Words).

Litchfield on the limitation page: "Dimi: finding this copy took some doing. I'm glad you have it. HG Pickering" In a letter which we hve had in the past Pickering explains the genesis of this book: "In 1931 an incident occurred on my annual fishing trip which I thought sufficiently amusing to dress up as a thin yarn and send out to my friends as a Christmas greeting. It was my thought to have it printed in pamphlet form by the office printer. Our mutual friend G. Franklin Ludington suggested that I should have it done by Derrydale and print only ninety-nine copies, that it should be illustrated and that Mrs. Pickering should color the frontispiece. These things were done and to my astonishment and eventual undoing, the book shortly became a collector's item." No. 39 of 99 copies, signed by the author. 12mo. Photographic frontispiece, hand colored by Susan Shipp Pickering (the author's wife), and 4 black and white photos. Original light blue paper over boards, printed labels on upper cover and spine, extremities and front joint repaired, else a fine copy of a rare, fragile book often found rebound, if at all.
