The Cicadas [West's Copy of Huxley's Book, with Notes]

Chatto & Windus, London 1931 - Nathanael West's copy of Huxley's collection of poetry, with West's holograph notes on five of the front and rear endpages. Approximately 250 words, mostly quotes of other writers -- Huxley, Gray, Shakespeare; some light, but most quite serious: "In matters of love it is absurd to stand on your dignity and claim your rights. Such experiences cannot be judged and calculated like a matter of business. One gives as much and as long as one can & one does not bargain. Take what is given to you." West concludes with: "The paths of glory lead but to the grave." The year this book was published, West published his first novel. Later in the 1930s, both West and Huxley were employed as Hollywood screenwriters. West died in 1940 at the age of 37. The provenance of this book leads from West to his brother-in-law, S.J. Perelman, to the writer and bookseller, George Sims, who recounts the circumstances of his purchasing books from Perelman in the early 1970s, presumably including this one. A photocopy of a note from Sims is laid in. Fading to spine, spotting to cloth, short tear to lower front joint; still very good, without dust jacket. Publisher's extra spine label tipped to rear free endpaper. A wonderful glimpse of West's musings and inner life. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Les Mouches d'Automne, Ou La Femme d'Autrefois

1931 - Paris: Editions Kra, 1931 [1931] 4to, 142 p., original pale green wraps lettered in dark green. One of 50 numbered copies on Van Gelder watermarked paper, this being copy No. 31. Nemirovsky's fifth novel, one of more than a dozen published during her lifetime. Nemirovsky was born a Russian but emigrated to France with her family after the Revolution in 1917. She attended the Sorbonne and enjoyed success as a writer early on - David Golder (1929) and La Bal (1930) were both made into movies; however, her popularity as an author, conversion to Roman Catholicism, and open hostility to her own heritage-though this is debatable-did not save her from the French police, who arrested her as a "stateless person of Jewish descent" during the German occupation. She was sent to Auschwitz in 1942; records list her cause of death as typhus, though she was most certainly gassed, as was her husband, who followed her to Auschwitz one year later. There has been a resurgence of interest in her writing due to the publication of her lost work Suite Francais, which won the Renaudot prize for 2004. Wraps are in rough condition, with lower 2" of front and rear missing; outer edge of front wrap very badly chipped w loss, exposed areas of text block discolored, otherwise internally clean and bright, with pages uncut. Lacks onion skin wrapper. This copy has been signed and inscribed by Nemirovsky "A monsieur H G Enelow, Hommage de l'auteur, Irene Nemirovsky". Rare thus. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

There Ought to Be a Law and Other Stories

Garden City: Doubleday Doran. 1931. First. First edition. Some soiling to the spine, else very good, lacking the dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author: "To Holger, representing Sweden in a tremendous international friendship with that true blue American, Nunnally. June 20, 1931." The recipient, Holger Cahill, was the National Director of the Federal Art Project, Works Projects Administration (1935 to 1943) -- Johnson was either mistaken, or being facetious: Cahill was actually born in Iceland. Author's first book, a collection of short stories. Johnson directed several good films, including The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit and The Three Faces of Eve, and wrote the screenplays for many more. .

        The Instinct Never Dies.

Ed W. Bateman, N.p., 1931. - First edition. 4to, full limp cowhide. One of the finest and rarest of Texas imprints, and one that has been referred to as the 'black tulip' of western fine printing. Of legendary rarity and highlighted in Al Lowman's The Printing Arts in Texas, this copy is accompanied by a letter from the author to Dudley Dobie concerning the book's origins and the great expense required to print it. Printed recto only, the book was written, designed and the type set by Ed W. Bateman, a one time newspaper reporter (hence the title) and a wildcatter of great success and failure. This book was created during one of his periods of great success. The text and illustrations are printed in two colors and the subject matter ranges from a father's implacable revenge for his son's death to a Mexican marijuana party visited in the company of a Texas Ranger. A fine copy in the publisher's slipcase (with moderate wear to slipcase). The letter to Dudley Dobie is extraordinary and has become rather famous in itself; on B Bar Cattle Company letterhead, dated April 13, 1941: 'I produced this book during the Bateman Age of Extravagance, when money (for which, apparently, I have a native-born contempt) was indeed plentiful. I spent so much on it, the very sum per copy would horrify an intelligent man. .not even a Morgan or a Rockefeller could or would pay what I paid.' The letter is trifolded; uniformly browned, with mild chipping at edges. One of the ultimate prizes of Texas fine printing. One of the essays in J. Frank Dobie's book, "Out of the Old Rock" (Little Brown, 1972) is about Bateman: "A wildcatter is a person who drills for oil in a place oil is not known to exist. Bankers consider his business about as safe as buying lottery tickets. In 1930, Ed Bateman, a Texas wildcatter, brought in the biggest discovery well in the history of the oil industry." Dobie refers to "The Instinct Never Dies" as follows: "Ed Bateman is a philosopher. There are many things in his philosophy that many oil men have never dreamed of. Sometimes the old urge to write seizes him. I have a rare little book that he not only wrote but designed and set with his own hands. One sketch in it is about a hermit philosopher-geologist who claimed to know the secret of finding 'enough petroleum to endow this planet for ages.'"         Jam To-day

[Vendôme Press], Paris, 1931 - Very nice copy Pearson (Neil). Obelisk. A History of Jack Kahane and the Obelisk Press, Liverpool University Press, 2007, A-7b, both Pearson’s vriants in white wrappers This, the author’s first and only novel, never reprinted, a "masochistic act of social suicide", was much derided, and led to the author’s abandonment by the friends lampooned therein. It was also seized by British customs on the grounds of obscenity. Firminger had fallen in love with Wyndham Lewis who also distanced himself from her. See Pearson, and Joshua Cohen’s "Hung Like an Obelisk, Hard as an Olympian; an alphabet of English-language literature in Paris" in the New Haven Review online for the full rather tragic story. This copy is a variant with a title-page that omits the Vendôme Press name. This presumably happened .at the point that Kahane took over the Vendôme business, but before it became Obelisk. Brown half calf, spine in compartments with raised bands with gilt ornaments and two green leather labels lettered in gilt, original yellow illustrated wrappers (rows of pots of jam) bound in, top edge gilt [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
