There Ought to Be a Law and Other Stories

Doubleday Doran, Garden City 1931 - First edition. Some soiling to the spine, else very good, lacking the dustwrapper. The recipient, Holger Cahill, was the National Director of the Federal Art Project, Works Projects Administration (1935 to 1943) -- Johnson was either mistaken, or being facetious: Cahill was actually born in Iceland. Author's first book, a collection of short stories. Johnson directed several good films, including *The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit* and *The Three Faces of Eve*, and wrote the screenplays for many more.         Living My Life

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1931 - First edition of Goldman's monumental autobiography, an undisputed high-spot of women's writing and one of a few truly important 20th-century radical memoirs. Goldman was reputedly furious with Knopf for issuing the book in two volumes at the height of an economic depression, and considered the publication price of $7.50 to be exhorbitant. The book indeed sold poorly, despite strong reviews, and has never been common. Examples in attractive dustwrappers are very seldom encountered in the trade. Knopf reissued the work in one volume in 1934. Two large octavo volumes (24cm). Original blue cloth, lettered in black on spines and front covers; original dustwrappers; 1-503; 504-990, xii pp; illus. Tight, attractive set, with just a hint of sunning to board edges, in the very uncommon pictorial dustwrappers, lightly rubbed and with small nicks at spine ends, still Very Good. Illustrated throughout with photographic plates (halftones). [Attributes: First Edition]

THE GLASS KEY (First American Edition in Original Dust Jacket)

Knopf 1931 - Hammett, Dashiell. THE GLASS KEY. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1931. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, having been published in London earlier that same year. A Very Good or better copy (slight sunning to the boards but no wear) in a Very Good example of the rare original dust jacket (price-intact, restored by an expert conservator to Fine condition). The book Hammett claimed throughout his life to have been his favorite. One of the most interesting aspects of Hammett's writing in The Glass Key is his refusal to let the reader into the character's minds. Hammett was often quoted as saying that in the real world people only understand actions and speech and in The Glass Key that's all we get. Made into the memorable 1942 film starring Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake. One of his great publishing successes: 20,000 copies sold within a year and the book received uniformly excellent reviews.         The Cicadas [West's Copy of Huxley's Book, with Notes]

London: Chatto & Windus. 1931. Nathanael West's copy of Huxley's collection of poetry, with West's holograph notes on five of the front and rear endpages. Approximately 250 words, mostly quotes of other writers -- Huxley, Gray, Shakespeare; some light, but most quite serious: "In matters of love it is absurd to stand on your dignity and claim your rights. Such experiences cannot be judged and calculated like a matter of business. One gives as much and as long as one can & one does not bargain. Take what is given to you." West concludes with: "The paths of glory lead but to the grave." The year this book was published, West published his first novel. Later in the 1930s, both West and Huxley were employed as Hollywood screenwriters. West died in 1940 at the age of 37. The provenance of this book leads from West to his brother-in-law, S.J. Perelman, to the writer and bookseller, George Sims, who recounts the circumstances of his purchasing books from Perelman in the early 1970s, presumably including this one. A photocopy of a note from Sims is laid in. Fading to spine, spotting to cloth, short tear to lower front joint; still very good, without dust jacket. Publisher's extra spine label tipped to rear free endpaper. A wonderful glimpse of West's musings and inner life. First Edition. Hardcover.
