Histoire de la Bienheureuse Raton. Fille de Joie. Illustrations de Charles Laborde.

Editions Mornay, Paris 1931 - Hand painted vellum binding by Laborde on one of 300 on velin from a total issue of 355. In addition, this copy has an original watercolor by Laborde on the colophon page, although this is not called for in the colophon. The watercolor is of the "jolie fille" and is inscribed and signed by Laborde to the former owner. Bound: hand-painted vellum binding, unsigned but undoubtedly painted by Laborde himself, with rondel vignette of street scene on front panel and a different vignette on back panel, spine smooth with author and title and year lettered in gold, green, and black with floral decorations enclosed in painted gilt scroll; green and gold silk damask guards, all edges gilt, original wrapper bound in, matching slipcase, binding by Valmar, near fine. Laborde, one of the book illustrators working in Paris in the post-World War I period, was a social satirist and his works, usually in the form of colored etchings, are splendid examples of the Art Deco period. This title, although set in another period altogether, is still very "Art Deco" in feeling. Printed by Aulard, the etchings were pulled by Kaelin and the coloring was done by Berthelot.         The Collected Poems. Chariot of the Sun, Sleeping Together, Torchbearer, Transit of Venus

Paris: The Black Sun Press,, 1931. Introductions and notes to the volumes contributed by D. H. Lawrence, T. S. Eliot, Stuart Gilbert, and Ezra Pound. 4 volumes, large octavo. Original printed wrappers under glassine. In the original red cloth slipcase. Light spotting and wear to spines with partial loss of glassine to spines, a beautiful set. First editions thus, one of 500 complete sets. Harry Crosby (1898–1929) was born the heir to one of Boston's wealthiest banking families, but after serving as an ambulance driver during the First World War he abandoned his wealth to live as an author in Paris with his wife Caresse Crosby. They embedded themselves in the avant-garde cultural scene, befriending the likes of Dali, Hemingway and Cartier-Bresson, founded the Black Sun Press which helped to publish the early works of Joyce, Eliot, Pound and Hart Crane, and lived a life of utter dissolution off Harry's inheritance which, when it ran out, had to be supplemented by telegrams to his banker father such as the infamous, "PLEASE SELL $10,000 WORTH OF STOCK. WE HAVE DECIDED TO LIVE A MAD AND EXTRAVAGANT LIFE", (to which the father, reluctantly but nonetheless amazingly, assented). Following Crosby's tragic death in 1929 (he was found shot dead in the same bed as Josephine, "The Fire Princess", one of his many lovers), the Black Sun Press issued several posthumous works, including this boxed set of his poems.

(Leipzig Ernst Ludwig Presse 1925-1931) - Seven volumes, a complete set as published. One of 250 copies. Only 200 copies of the seventh volume were printed. The dedication notes that this edition was produced as an homage to T.J. Cobden-Sanderson and the German editions of Goëthe printed at the Doves Press. Designed and with initial lettering by Christian Heinrich Kleukens, incorporating a font that carries the same austere elegance as the Doves fonts. An uncommon set, this copy is even more so for its binding of vellum-backed green boards, in their original green paper dust wrappers and paper-covered slipcases. The gilt work on the spines is reminiscent of the work done at the Doves Bindery. Light wear to slipcases, one of which shows staining. One jacket significantly chipped and torn, a few others with smaller tears to spines, mostly closed. Overall, a fine set of perhaps the most beautiful edition of Shakespeare's works printed in Germany. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The orange cloth shows rubbing, light edge wear, fading to the spine and light scratches to the surface of the rear board. Top and bottom of page block show light areas of wear. The dust jacket shows light rubbing, several faint, stray pencil marks, and aforementioned tide marks. There is light chipping at corners and spine ends. The spine panel is darkened, with creasing and surface wear. A very lovely example of this scarce dust jacket.

Masters of Mystery. A Study of the Detective Story

London, Collins. 1931, 1931. FIRST EDITION 8vo. 288pp. Publisher's black cloth, titled in red to the spine, top edge red other edges untrimmed.. Bumped to the head of the spine, some minor shelwear and negligible scuffing. Internally clean and bright, solid and strong. Interestingly enough this copy is accompanied by its dustwrapper, an unprecedented event. The wrapper has chipping to the corners and general light wear to the extremities; the most significant defect of an otherwise strong wrapper is a shallow band of loss to the head of the spine, which however does not interfere with the titles. The wrapper design is very 1930's with its grey geometric design to the red titled spine and a montage of photgraphic mystery movie stills forming the front and rear panels. Credited as being the first literary examination of the mystery genre. H. Douglas Thomson was a renowned Holmes authority (he even gives his address as Baker St.) and an aficianado of crime writing. Includes chapters on 'The History of Detective Fiction', 'Edgar Allan Poe', 'Sherlock Holmes' and 'Thrillers'.

The Cicadas [West's Copy of Huxley's Book, with Notes]

Chatto & Windus, London 1931 - Nathanael West's copy of Huxley's collection of poetry, with West's holograph notes on five of the front and rear endpages. Approximately 250 words, mostly quotes of other writers -- Huxley, Gray, Shakespeare; some light, but most quite serious: "In matters of love it is absurd to stand on your dignity and claim your rights. Such experiences cannot be judged and calculated like a matter of business. One gives as much and as long as one can & one does not bargain. Take what is given to you." West concludes with: "The paths of glory lead but to the grave." The year this book was published, West published his first novel. Later in the 1930s, both West and Huxley were employed as Hollywood screenwriters. West died in 1940 at the age of 37. The provenance of this book leads from West to his brother-in-law, S.J. Perelman, to the writer and bookseller, George Sims, who recounts the circumstances of his purchasing books from Perelman in the early 1970s, presumably including this one. A photocopy of a note from Sims is laid in. Fading to spine, spotting to cloth, short tear to lower front joint; still very good, without dust jacket. Publisher's extra spine label tipped to rear free endpaper. A wonderful glimpse of West's musings and inner life. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Les Mouches d'Automne, Ou La Femme d'Autrefois

1931 - Paris: Editions Kra, 1931 [1931] 4to, 142 p., original pale green wraps lettered in dark green. One of 50 numbered copies on Van Gelder watermarked paper, this being copy No. 31. Nemirovsky's fifth novel, one of more than a dozen published during her lifetime. Nemirovsky was born a Russian but emigrated to France with her family after the Revolution in 1917. She attended the Sorbonne and enjoyed success as a writer early on - David Golder (1929) and La Bal (1930) were both made into movies; however, her popularity as an author, conversion to Roman Catholicism, and open hostility to her own heritage-though this is debatable-did not save her from the French police, who arrested her as a "stateless person of Jewish descent" during the German occupation. She was sent to Auschwitz in 1942; records list her cause of death as typhus, though she was most certainly gassed, as was her husband, who followed her to Auschwitz one year later. There has been a resurgence of interest in her writing due to the publication of her lost work Suite Francais, which won the Renaudot prize for 2004. Wraps are in rough condition, with lower 2" of front and rear missing; outer edge of front wrap very badly chipped w loss, exposed areas of text block discolored, otherwise internally clean and bright, with pages uncut. Lacks onion skin wrapper. This copy has been signed and inscribed by Nemirovsky "A monsieur H G Enelow, Hommage de l'auteur, Irene Nemirovsky". Rare thus. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

There Ought to Be a Law and Other Stories

Garden City: Doubleday Doran. 1931. First. First edition. Some soiling to the spine, else very good, lacking the dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author: "To Holger, representing Sweden in a tremendous international friendship with that true blue American, Nunnally. June 20, 1931." The recipient, Holger Cahill, was the National Director of the Federal Art Project, Works Projects Administration (1935 to 1943) -- Johnson was either mistaken, or being facetious: Cahill was actually born in Iceland. Author's first book, a collection of short stories. Johnson directed several good films, including The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit and The Three Faces of Eve, and wrote the screenplays for many more. .
