Ein Ghetto im Osten. Wilna. 65 Bilder von M. Vorobeichic, eingeleitet von S. Chnéour

Orell Fussli Verlag, Zurich, Leipzig 1931 - Original orange and black publisher's photo-illustrated boards. First edition of Vorobeichic's pre-WWII photo-essay on Lithuanian Jews, with 65 black-and-white photographic images and photocollages. Lithuanian-born photographer Moshé Raviv-Vorobeichic trained at the Bauhaus in the 1920s and after studying at the École de Photo Ciné in Paris, returned to visit his family and photographed life in the Jewish community of Vilnius, Lithuania¿s capital. The result was Ein Ghetto im Osten, Wilna. A poignancy has been added in hindsight since it was made at the beginning of a desperate time for European Jewry. With preface by poet Zalman Chnéour in both Yiddish and German. "In the same year that his Paris was published, Moï Ver - under his real name of Moshé Vorobeichic- produced Ein Ghetto im Osten (A Ghetto in the East). Even more so than Paris, Ein Ghetto im Osten was ostensibly a documentary book, but as he had done in his view of the French city, Moï Ver once again used a variety of New Vision strategies, the most obvious being to take many images from upstairs windows looking on to the narrow streets of Vilnius's old Jewish quarter. This creates odd angles and a dynamic mise en scène for his pictures of people going about their everyday business on the street. He also introduced cinematic cutting and montaging techniques to heighten the interest. 7 pages in German, 64 leaves of photos, 7 pages in Yiddish. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

With the dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece. Contemporary ownership inscription. Spine a little faded, some partial fading to cloth sides, rubbing to ends and corners, partial toning to endpapers, still a very good copy in the spine-tanned, somewhat dust soiled, lightly marked jacket with small chips and tears to edges and corners.         LAST AND FIRST MEN: A STORY OF THE NEAR AND FAR FUTURE.

New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, [1931] - Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v [vi] vii-ix [x] xi [xii] xiii-xvi 1-371 [372: blank], original purple cloth, all panels ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, top edge stained black, fore and bottom edges rough trimmed. First U.S. edition, first binding. "The author's first work of fiction, inaugurating those anatomies of the future that blend romance and philosophy, spectacle and prophecy, cosmological in scope, teleological in tone, for which the term 'novel' is wholly misleading. With its telescopic focus, the Stapledonian romance eschews characters and dialogue, replacing them with Man and Evolution. The half-century to come, as predicted by the author in his foreword, would indeed be critical, coinciding with the high watermark of those social engineering schemes that seemed so congruent with the kind of utopian visions emblazoned here." - Robert Eldridge. ". one of the most remarkable imaginative works in the field of futuristic fiction: an account of human development during the next hundreds of millions of years." - Clarke, Tale of the Future (1978), p. 58. "On his own terms, Stapledon is unequaled, and he certainly has been one of the major influences on contemporary science fiction." - Survey of Science Fiction Literature III, pp. 1140-43. "LAST AND FIRST MEN and STAR MAKER soar far beyond the accepted limits of science fiction. Stapledon is the great classical example, the cold pitch of perfection as he turns scientific concepts into vast ontological epic prose poems, the ultimate SF writer." - Aldiss, Trillion Year Spree: The History of Science Fiction, p. 198. Stapledon's "influence, both direct and indirect, on the development of many concepts which now permeate genre SF is probably second only to that of H. G. Wells." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), pp. 1151-53. Aldiss, Trillion Year Spree: The History of Science Fiction, p. 198. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 3- 56; (1981) 2-98; (1987) 2-109; (1995) 2-119; and (2004) II-1069. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 2086. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 718.         The Mahdi of Allah, the Story of the Dervish Mohammed Ahmed, inscribed by the author to Sir Henry Wellcome

London: Putnam, 1931. First edition. Hardcover. Good/Good. Here is a jacketed British first edition of this scarce work bearing a lengthy introduction by Winston Churchill and inscribed and dated by the author, Richard A. Bermann, to Sir Henry Wellcome, himself a figure with notable ties to the Sudan. The inscription in five lines in black ink on the first free endpaper reads: "To Sir Henry Wellcome | in admiration of his | great research and archaeological work | in the Sudan | 15th Dec, 1933 Richard A Bermann". Intriguingly, the only other previous ownership mark is a previous owner name on the front pastedown (indecipherable) with the location and date: "Khartoum 2 Oct 45". Sir Henry Solomon Wellcome (1853-1936) was a pharmaceutical magnate and innovator who established the Wellcome Trust, one of the world's largest medical charities. Wellcome was also a keen archaeologist, digging for many years at Jebel Moya, Sudan and hiring thousands to excavate. Wellcome was one of the first investigators to use kite aerial photography on an archaeological site, with surviving images available in the Wellcome Library. Born an American, Wellcome became a British subject in 1910, was knighted in 1932, and died an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Mohammed Ahmed was a messianic Islamic leader in central and northern Sudan in the final decades of the 19th century whose forces and followers occupied most of the Sudan. In 1883 the Mahdists overwhelmed the Egyptian army of British commander William Hicks, and in 1885, General Gordon famously lost his life in a doomed defence of the capitol, Khartoum, where he had been sent to lead evacuation of Egyptian forces. Though the Mahdi died in 1885, his theocracy continued until 1898, when the British general Kitchener reoccupied the Sudan. A very young Winston Churchill would participate in the decisive defeat of Mahdist forces at the battle of Omdurman in September 1898. The young war correspondent and British cavalry officer would write his second published book, The River War, about this British campaign in the Sudan, with notable sympathy for the Mahdist forces and criticism of the British Army; the 1902 second edition of Churchill's book excised much of his politically questionable criticism about Kitchener. In 1931, Churchill wrote a four-page introduction for this book about the Mahdi from "the Mahdi's point of view". Churchill's broadminded understanding endures three decades after he fought the Mahdi's forces: "It is interesting to know that [the Mahdi's] operations with fire and sword through the Sudan were based on a religious enthusiasm as sincere and philanthropic as that which inspired Saint Dominic or General Booth." This work is translated from the original German and Churchill's introduction appears only in the British and U.S. editions. Interestingly, the British first edition bears a tipped in slip after the copyright page printed in bright red ink disavowing acknowledgement of "the claim of the Dervish Mohammed Ahmed to the sublime title of 'The Mahdi of Allah'" in order "To avoid the possibility of causing offence to Mohammedan readers". The British first edition of this work is scarce in dust jacket and we have not previously encountered an inscribed copy. This copy is both jacketed and inscribed, though only in good condition, likely owing to its African provenance. The khaki cloth binding shows wear to the corners and spine ends, as well as a few small white marks to the front cover. The contents remain clean and free of spotting. The binding is shaken, with a gutter break between the first free endpaper and frontispiece, the paper split but the mull beneath still fully intact. The dust jacket is unclipped with minor loss to the spine ends and corners, but brittle, with splitting at the rear hinge and flap folds, and an inked "5" to the lower spine. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen B47.1, Woods B17.

London: George Routledge & Sons, Ltd.,, 1931. With a Foreword by Lionel Robbins. Octavo. Publisher's blue cloth, spine lettered gilt. Endpapers lightly toned. Japanese bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. A very good copy. First edition, with a foreword by Lionel Robbins, originally published as vol. 3 of the Beiträge zur Konjunkturforschung in Vienna in the same year. This work is one of Hayek's principal contributions to the development of capital theory "commonly regarded as his most fundamental and pathbreaking achievement" (The New Palgrave) "The widely recognized but rarely understood Hayekian triangles, introduced in his Prices and Production, provided a convenient but highly stylized way of describing the changes in the intertemporal pattern of the capital structure" (The New Palgrave.)

Arte decorativa navale di Anselmo Bucci

Milano: Ceschina, 1931. Prima edizione (First Edition). ril tela (cloth). Ottimo (Fine). 8vo. XCI tavole in nero Il Cap.
