This edition published shortly after his death in 1930, and as with most of the earliest editions, is illustrated in colors throughout by Nisson Abramovich Shifrin, the principal stage designer at the Central Theater of the Soviet Army and Moscow Art Theater.         Fables de La Fontaine

1931. first edition. La Fontaine's Fables Illustrated by One of France's Best Loved ArtistsFirst Edition - Signed by Félix LoriouxLORIOUX, Félix, illustrator. LA FONTAINE, Jean de. Fables de La Fontaine. Illustrations de Félix Lorioux. [Paris]: Librairie Hachette, [n.d. ca 1927]. First edition with Lorioux illustrations. This copy signed in ink by Félix Lorioux at the foot of the last page.Large quarto (12 5/16 x 9 5/8 inches; 312 x 245 mm.). [iv], 72 pp. Color printed title-page and seventy-two 'fantastical' full page color illustrations. Publisher's quarter dark blue cloth over mottled tan boards. Front cover with title printed in dark blue and a central panel with a full color illustration pasted-on. Pictorial endpapers printed in red and black. Corners a little rubbed, otherwise a near fine copy of this very beautifully illustrated book.Félix Lorioux (1872-1964) was one of France?'s best loved artists, but he was a humble, quiet man who did little to promote himself beyond his home country. He studied art as an apprentice with painters on glass and later in Angers and Paris Ecole des Beaux Arts. He began as a fashion designer , but his childlike sense of wonder led him to a career as a children?'s book illustrator. Walt Disney was impressed with his abilities and hired him to illustrate books for the French market based on Mickey Mouse and the Silly Symphonies. It has been said that a Lorioux illustration of a goose in a sailor suit may have even been the inspiration for Donald Duck. Around 1934, Disney revoked the contract and brought the work in house. Presumably, Walt felt that Lorioux?'s illustrations were "off model" and wanted to standardize the look of the books featuring his characters. Ultimately, it was Disney?'s loss, not Lorioux?'s.Lorioux went on to illustrate definitive editions of Perrault?'s Fairy Tales, Don Quixote, the Fables of La Fontaine and Robinson Crusoe. However, he was most at home painting delicate watercolors of the birds, flowers and insects in his garden. He imagined fantastic worlds populated by these little creatures. Lorioux?'s books are rarely seen in the United States.

        La Danse sous le Cèdre.

Alexandria 1931 - MANUSCRIPT, fair copy in author’s attractive holograph, squared notebook, pp. 17, crown 8vo, original stapled self wrappers, a couple of spots front and rear, very good A long poem, dedicated to and evidently inspired by Paul Valéry, a quotation from whom is among four epigraphs used.Born in Alexandria in 1888, but of Lebanese extraction, Klat’s diplomatic career returned him to the Lebanon at the beginning of the 1930s, subsequently taking him to São Paulo as the Lebanese Consul-general. Alongside the broad cultural perspective that his studies and subsequent career had fostered, the poetic imagery and themes of the francophone and francophile Klat richly evoke his homeland with a lyricism that is well captured by the present poem, which would go on to form a central part of his first published collection, ‘Le cèdre et les lys’ - and later republished with a Preface by Jean Cocteau in ‘Du cèdre aux lys’.This copy was in the collection of Lady Roberts, née Celeste Leila Beatrix Shoucair, wife of diplomat Frank Roberts, and herself from a distinguished Lebanese family.

        India. Speeches and an Introduction

London: Thornton Butterworth, Ltd.,, 1931. [together with:] a copy of the second impression. 2 copies, octavo. Original orange printed wrappers and green printed wrappers. First impression: spine and front panel toned, head of spine chipped, bump to fore-edge affecting a handful of leaves, a little foxing to edges. Second impression: bumped at foot of spine (causing some internal creasing), a little foxing to edges. First edition, first impression, together with a copy of the second impression (issued quickly after the first in May 1931). This is the wrappered issue, a bound edition was published at the same time. The 30s are characterized as Churchill's wilderness years, with his unrelenting opposition to Hitler being seen as the main cause for his ostracism. However "another, and earlier reason lay in his bitter opposition to Baldwin's India policy… Churchill had always hit hard; not for him a round of gentlemanly sparring between friends. His fight to maintain full control of India employed not just the clenched fist but the bludgeon" (Woods, Artillery of Words: the Writings of Sir Winston Churchill, p. 69).

        THE WALKING CORPSE.

New York: William Morrow & Company, 1931. - First U. S. edition. Originally published in the U. K. in 1931 as THE GREAT SOUTHERN MYSTERY. Fine, bright, tight copy in a striking dust jacket with only a hint of rubbing to the spine ends. When the chambermaid of The Great Southern Hotel entered room 49, she found the occupant dead in bed. When the body was examined, fifty gold sovereigns came tumbling from his mouth. But, only a few minutes before the discovery of his body, a bell boy had seen "number 49" talking to an attractive young woman in the hotel lobby. This is the first in a series of murders that Superintendent Wilson must solve. An exceptional copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Trout Fishing in Secret

New York: The Derrydale Press, 1931. No. 39 of 99 copies, signed by the author. Photographic frontispiece, hand colored by Susan Shipp Pickering (the author's wife), and 4 black and white photos. 1 vols. 12mo. Original light blue paper over boards, printed labels on upper cover and spine, extremities and front joint repaired, else a fine copy of a rare, fragile book often found rebound, if at all. Bookplate of Edward Sands Litchfield. This is the first edition, made for presentation: no copies were intended for general sale. Inscribed by the author to Edward S. Litchfield on the limitation page: "Dimi: finding this copy took some doing. I'm glad you have it. HG Pickering" In a letter which we hve had in the past Pickering explains the genesis of this book: "In 1931 an incident occurred on my annual fishing trip which I thought sufficiently amusing to dress up as a thin yarn and send out to my friends as a Christmas greeting. It was my thought to have it printed in pamphlet form by the office printer. Our mutual friend G. Franklin Ludington suggested that I should have it done by Derrydale and print only ninety-nine copies, that it should be illustrated and that Mrs. Pickering should color the frontispiece. These things were done and to my astonishment and eventual undoing, the book shortly became a collector's item."

Heroes and Heroines of Bitter Sweet

London, [1931] - Rare portfolio commemorating Coward's hugely successful 1929 operetta. "Sentiment is out of fashion," says Beerbohm in his note. "Yet Bittersweet, which is nothing if not sentimental, is not a dead failure . Sentiment goes on; unaffrighted by the roarings of the young lions and lionesses of Bloomsbury, Bittersweet goes on, too; and Mr. Cochran [Charles Cochran, the producer] (being a sentimentalist), has wished that his survival should be commemorated by me in some sentimental drawings, which are here submitted to you." Along with Coward, there are portraits of Peggy Wood, Georges Metaxa, Ivy St. Helier, and Cochran - each signed by the subject on the mount Number 84 (?) of 100 copies. Folio. Title leaf, contents leaf, facsimile "Note by Max," and 5 mounted color plates, each plate SIGNED by the subject of the caricature. Parchment-backed portfolio; plates loose as issued.         The Maltese Falcon (Unrecorded Variant, Books into Film)

Grosset & Dunlap, 1931, Hardcover, Book Condition: Fine, Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine, Later PrintingOrange cloth over boards, title and decorations printed in negative black onto spine, falcon motif printed in black onto upper board, top edge stained green, 12mo (7-3/8 inches tall), pp. [x], 267, [11] ads. Copyright page states "SEVENTH PRINTING, MAY, 1931". Volume with a touch of toning to text and slightest softening to spine ends. DJ with two closed tears to head of spine panel and light wear. Evidently, an unrecorded variant, as this 1931 printing is lacking from the Layman bibliography (assume a 2nd G&D printing). "Spade held them off at arm's length, partly because of the girl, who fascinated him, and partly because the pursuit of the Maltese Falcon offered a reward that staggered his imagination, when he found out what it meant to possess it." A later reprint with the same great binding and jacket art as the original, using the same printing plates and paper stocks for the covers and text. Ref. Firsts, June 1992; Layman A3.1.g.

The Truth About the Slump - What the News Never Tells

A.N. Field, New Zealand 1931 - 194 + xiv pages. Index. "This book tells the story of who caused the slump (Great Depression) and how they caused it, and it directs attention to two simple steps that can be taken to save our farmers and traders. The depression from which we now suffer is due to an artificially induced variation in the purchasing power of money. In these pages will be found ample evidence in support of this statement. The quarter from which the trouble is coming is indicated, and the amazing manner in which the machinery for monetary control of the world was established is traced out." - from Introduction. Covers tanned with age. Binding intact. Prior owner's name atop front cover. Contents considerably annotated in soft pencil. Most of blank back leaf missing. Above-average but not excessive wear.         Stray Shots

New York: The Derrydale Press, 1931. Deluxe Edition, No. 16 of 35 copies, signed by Eugene Connett on the limitation page. With 13 drypoint etchings, each signed in pencil by Clark. 1 vols. 8vo. Original three quarter brown morocco, marbled paper sides, t.e.g., others uncut. Bookpalte. Very slight cover wear, else fine in matching three quarter morocco clamshell box. A very nice copy of a volume that is less a book than a work of art. Roland Clark's matchless drypoints, all first impressions, printed from the plates on fine watermarked deckle edge paper and signed by him, are luminous--one doesn't have to be a devotee of wildfowling to appreciate their magic artistry. If one is a devotee, this book is profoundly satisfying. Frazier acknowledges this: "One of the most beautiful of the Derrydale Press books in every phase. In my opinion this one will continue to go up in value forever.".
