Milano: Ceschina, 1931. Prima edizione (First Edition). ril tela (cloth). Ottimo (Fine). 8vo. XCI tavole in nero Il Cap. New York: Knopf, 1931. Hammett, Dashiell. THE GLASS KEY. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1931. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, having been published in London earlier that same year. A Very Good or better copy (slight sunning to the boards but no wear) in a Very Good example of the rare original dust jacket (price-intact, restored by an expert conservator to Fine condition). The book Hammett claimed throughout his life to have been his favorite. One of the most interesting aspects of Hammett's writing in The Glass Key is his refusal to let the reader into the character's minds. Hammett was often quoted as saying that in the real world people only understand actions and speech and in The Glass Key that's all we get. Made into the memorable 1942 film starring Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake. One of his great publishing successes: 20,000 copies sold within a year and the book received uniformly excellent reviews.. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/Very Good Plus.

      - Typed letter signed "Walter" to William Stanley Braithwaite; February 17, 1931. 8vo., on NAACP letterhead; approximately 125 words; unpublished; fold lines. "My dear Stanley: The seventeenth Spingarn Medal, recently awarded to Richard B. Harrison, will be presented at the Mansfield Theatre, New York City, on Sunday evening, March 2nd, at 8:30 o'clock. As in all former presentations of the Medal, this will be an exceedingly beautiful and dignified occasion. We would like to have present on that occasion as many as possible of living Spingarn Medalists. We are, therefore, extending to you a most cordial invitation to be present and to occupy a seat upon the platform, wearing your Medal. Formal dress will be worn. Will you be good enough to let us know if we may have the honor of your presence. Ever sincerely" ---- Walter White, the Georgia-born, fair-skinned newspaperman, became the executive director of the NAACP in 1931, managing the organization's legal and political challenge to racial inequality for a quarter century. William Stanley Braithwaite, poet and anthologist, earned the Spingarn Medal in 1918. Richard Berry Harrison, the recipient of the 1931 Spingarn Medal, is remembered for his role of 'De Lawd' in Marc Connelly's Pulitzer Prize-winning tale of a southern black preacher's vision of heaven, "The Green Pastures," in which he played God more than 1,500 times until his death in 1935.
