        The Glass Key

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1931. First American edition. Near Fine/Very Good +. A sharp copy of Hammett's fourth novel. Book nearly Fine with a few spots to the topstain and the spine very slightly faded. In a Very Good + dust jacket that is also a bit faded at the spine and with minor rubbing and wear at the extremities. "The Glass Key" follows a gambler, Ned Beaumont, who gets in over his head when he becomes involved in a murder investigation. It is considered by many to Hammett's best work. It was a major influence on the hard boiled genre from one of its greatest practitioners. The book was adapted into a radioplay starring Orson Welles in addition to a well reviewed 1942 film with Veronica Lake, Alan Ladd, and Brian Donlevy. Writing in The Guardian, author James Ellroy said of the book: "The Glass Key is Hammett's last great work of fiction. It's a model of economical storytelling. It's sombre and invigorating in equal measure. It's a predator's vision of the American jungle, and a book with a deep and troubled love for America - this huckster's paradise - itself. Hammett was the great poet of the great American collision - personal honour and corruption, opportunity and fatality.". Near Fine in Very Good +. dust jacket.

SUMMARY: The Science of Life is a book written by H. G. Wells, Julian Huxley and G. P. Wells, giving a popular account of all major aspects of biology as known in the 1920s. It has been called "the first modern textbook of biology" and "the best popular introduction to the biological sciences." Wells's most recent biographer notes that The Science of Life "is not quite as dated as one might suppose." The book was originally serialized in 31 fortnightly parts. The volume includes more than 300 illustrations. It was a great success, though the stock market crash and subsequent depression held back sales, in part because of declining memberships in book clubs. It has been said of Book Four (The How and Why of Development and Evolution) that it "offers perhaps the clearest, most readable, succinct and informative popular account of the subject ever penned. It was here that [Huxley] first expounded his own version of what later developed into the evolutionary synthesis". BACKGROUND: Herbert George "H. G." Wells (21 September 1866 – 13 August 1946) was a prolific English writer in many genres, including the novel, history, politics, and social commentary, and textbooks and rules for war games. He is now best remembered for his science fiction novels, and Wells is sometimes called the father of science fiction, as are Jules Verne and Hugo Gernsback. His most notable science fiction works include The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, and The Island of Doctor Moreau. George Philip Wells (17 July 1901 – 27 September 1985), son of the British science fiction author H. G. Wells, was a zoologist and author. He co-authored, with his father and Julian Huxley, The Science of Life. A pupil at Oundle School, he was in the first class to learn Russian as a modern language in a British school. He accompanied his father to Soviet Russia in 1920, acting as his Russian translator and exchanging ideas with Russian zoology students. He won an entrance Exhibition to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he became Senior Scholar in his first year of residence. Sir Julian Sorell Huxley (22 June 1887 – 14 February 1975) was an English evolutionary biologist, eugenicist, and internationalist. He was a proponent of natural selection, and a leading figure in the mid-twentieth century evolutionary synthesis. He was Secretary of the Zoological Society of London (1935–1942), the first Director of UNESCO, a founding member of the World Wildlife Fund and the first President of the British Humanist Association. CONDITION: Conditions are Good+/Very Good. Some wear to edges, darkening/browning to spines, light blemishing to plates/opposite plate pages, rest of pages/hinges are very good, text blocks sprung from spines as issued so could be a little tighter but all together.         The Real McCoy

Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Company. 1931. First. First edition. Fine in near fine dustwrapper but for a small chip on the spine. "The true story of Captain Bill McCoy of the Tomoka, the founder of Rum Row and King of Rum Runners." Inscribed by the subject of the book: "To Bob Davis, the man who suggested that this yarn be put in print. Bill McCoy." McCoy was probably the most famous of the rum runners, who would bring liquor to the edge of American territorial waters and offload it onto small craft in order to elude the authorities. Rum runners were famous for watering the liquor that they illegally imported during Prohibition. McCoy apparently never did so, and handled only high quality brands, hence popularizing the phrase "The Real McCoy." Scarce either signed or in jacket. .

Manuscript Journal - Ancient Columns - Petra

Lativa, 1931. Latvia, Riga, 1931. Archaeological manuscript notebook with drawings, by a historian of architecture and sculpture in antiquity, professor and author on the subject, Konstantin Ronczewski, focusing specifically on ancient columns and capitals of columns from the Nabataean Kingdom, now in Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, Arabia and Syria, with significant attention to Petra. 8vo. 67 pages in manuscript including approximately 30 in-text drawings, and a table of contents for reference. Text is mostly in German. With a postcard addressed to him by a German museum of Egyptian antiquity, and two further notes loosely place within. French inscription to front endpaper, 'Propeieté du professeur Dr. K. Ronczewski, Université de Lettonie - Riga. Original journal as issued, measuring approximately 13,5 x 20 x 1 cm, green and black continental paper boards, marbled edges, near fine condition. Archaeological manuscripts such as this are seldom found today, this one in the hand of an expert in his field makes a rare and unique acquisition. Dealing largely with ancient Petra and Jordanian archaeology, other sites examined here include Amman, 'Iraq al Amir in the Jordan Valley, Gerasa (now Jerash) also near Amman, Beirut, Jerusalem, Baalbek in Lebanon, the Nabatean Arch in Bosra in Syria, Damascus, Trieste and Naples in Italy, Mada'in Saleh in Arabia (the Nabatean kingdom's southernmost and largest settlement after Petra), and the small theatre at Kanawat also in Arabia. Regarded as the authority on ancient Roman, Greek, and Nabatean columns, Konstantin Ronczewski (1874-1935) was a respected historian of ancient architecture, a university professor, author of many works on the subject, and a sculptor himself. Still today, scholars draw upon his works. Among other notable contributions, he identified the columns at Clitunno, Italy, as being Corinth in origin, cataloguing them in about 1930 as a variant type. Through exhaustive efforts he also revealed that leaf-volute capitals appeared widely in Ancient Roman Imperial orders. His knowledge extensive, and dedication to the subject unwavering, he followed the works of all notable archaeologists and historians from his time and before. Here he transcribes pertinent passages (in English) from Gustaf Dalman "The Khazneh at Petra", and also (in English) from George Horsfield's writings on the Al Khazneh in "The Gorge of Petra". Numerous other references to important archaeologists are made. Konstantin Ronczewski (1875-1935), was a prominent Latvian sculptor, a respected architectural historian, professor, author, and an expert on ancient columns. He obtained doctorate degrees at the University of Cracow (1925) and the German Archaeological Institute (1932). His life and work are connected to the Riga Polytechnic Institute of Architecture (1899-1905, 1913-1918), the Latvian University Faculty of Architecture (1921-1935), and the Latvian Academy of Art (1921-1935). His art works are directly connected with his archaeological research, reflecting academic historicism and neoclassical elements with detailed and precise reproduction. After completing his studies at the Riga Polytechnic Institute in 1898, he worked for architects Johann Koch and Otto Hoffman. In 1905 he began to study painting, first under Janis Rosentals in Riga, then under Ilya Ivanovich Mashkov in Moscow, and finally with Heinrich Knira (Knirr) in Munich. While staying in Paris from 1909 to 1912 his interest turned to sculpting. Here he studied with Jean-Antoine Injalbert, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, and the like. Now a member of the Union of Baltic artists, in 1912, Ronczewski returned to Riga to teach art and architectural history at the Riga Polytechnical Institute and Riga Art School, while continuing to develop and showcase his artistic works of various genres. During World War he moved to Moscow, remaining there until 1917. The Archaeological Institute at the Siegel der Universität Köln (University of Cologne), Albertus Magnus Platz, holds a collection of photographs of the author. Some of his sculptures are held in the University of the Latvian Academy of Music, the Latvian National Opera, and in private collections. . Very Good.
