A small group of autograph musical manuscripts in the hand of the noted film composer

1930s or later. 1. Fair copy of tenor saxophone chorus part of three standards arranged (not composed) by Raksin. Folio (319 x 241 mm.). 3 pp. of a bifolium. Notated in ink on 12-stave music paper "Parchment Brand No. 3" issued by Belwin Inc, New York. P. 1: "Nobody's Sweetheart now," dated "September 1931"; p. 2: "Some of These Days," dated "Sept. 1931"; p. 3: "Dinah," dated "August, 1931" at conclusion. With inscription to head of p. 1: "To the best Tenor Sax Man I know. Tony from Dave Raksin," signed again and dated Sept. 27, 1931 at foot. Somewhat browned and soiled, especially at spine. Slightly frayed at edges; minor paper repair. 2. 1st alto saxophone part for "Sapphire." Octavo (242 x 172 mm.). 2ff. written on one side only. Notated in pencil on 10-stave music paper "Clarke's Music Tablet" issued by Theodore Presser Co., Philadelphia. Incomplete; part breaks off at the end of p. 2 after 85 measures. No signature or date. Stapled at upper left corner; creased and frayed at edges. 3. Tenor saxophone part (in B-flat) of an arrangement of Frédéric Chopin's Prelude op. 28 no. 4 in E minor. Folio (319 x 241 mm.). Notated in ink on one side of the leaf only on 12-stave music paper. The part is written out twice, with minimal differences: in the second version, some enharmonic spellings have been corrected, but a "p[iano]" and "smorz." in the final measures are lacking. The first version is quite clear, but the heading, "Prelude – Chopin E. Minor" is written in haste and the instrument not specified. The second version, headed "Tenor Sax Prelude – E Minor Chopin," bears all signs of a fair copy. No signature or date. Minor repair to left edge. 4. 1 page, in all likelihood for tenor saxophone. Folio (ca. 320 x 240 mm). Notated in ink on 12-stave music paper paginated "6" at upper left corner. First staff: conclusion of an unknown piece in 4/4 time with a key signature of four sharps. Second staff: blank, with headed "Train from the West." Staves 3-12: [?]entire part for "Train from the West" (double bar at the end). Various verbal cues to other parts in both pencil and ink; notational corrections in pencil, partially erased; rehearsal numbers 32- 35 in red pencil framed in blue. No signature or date. Most probably used for conducting; frequent changes of tempo suggest that the fragment belongs to a film score. Slightly worn and creased; laid down to styrofoam with dark gray mat. . "Nobody's Sweetheart Now," a 1923 song by a team of authors including Elmer Schoebel (1896-1970), is a pop standard. The other two songs are considered jazz standards: "Some of These Days" was written by Shelton Brooks (1886-1975) and popularized by Sophie Tucker's 1911 recording; "Dinah," by Harry Akst (1894-1963) was first introduced in 1923 and remained highly popular throughout the 1920s and 1930s. "Train from the West" is most likely from a film score; the style of manuscript and the quality of paper of "Sapphire" suggest that this fragment belongs to an unknown arrangement from Raksin's very early years. "Mr. Raksin began piano lessons at 6 but later switched to the saxophone. At 12, he was leading a small dance band, which he expanded in high school for broadcasting on the local CBS station. He taught himself orchestration in high school and while majoring in music composition at the University of Pennsylvania played in society bands and radio orchestras." The Los Angeles Times, August 9, 2004, obituary for Raksin by Dennis McLellan. "In 1935 Raksin went to Hollywood to work with Charlie Chaplin on the music for Modern Times. This collaboration yielded one of the most effective original scores ever written for a silent film... Raksin settled permanently in Los Angeles in 1937, working in the Hollywood studios as a composer, arranger and/or orchestrator and studying privately with Schoenberg. Raksin's unusually complex textures and harmonies typecast him as a specialist in horror films and mystery, but he was adept in other genres, including westerns and comedies. In the early 1940s Raksin was employed at Fox, for whom he wrote the score to Laura (1944). One of his most original and enduring works, the film's reputation as a classic owes much to the haunting score; at its heart is Raksin's elusive melody for the title character which, remarkably, is never completed. The theme was a great popular success as a song (lyrics by Johnny Mercer), became a jazz standard and is one of the most performed and recorded of all film themes... Raksin worked regularly as a film composer until the early 1970s; his body of about 100 scores includes perhaps some 20 works that rank among Hollywood's very best..."         The Art of Wave Riding

Hollywood: The Cloister Press, 1931. First edition. 12 photographic illustrations to text. 26 pp. 8vo. Staple bound, original printed pictorial wrappers. A fine copy. First edition. 12 photographic illustrations to text. 26 pp. 8vo. THE FIRST BOOK ON SURFING. "The landmark bodysurfing primer" (De La Vega). Described by Mark Hayes in his checklist of Early Surfing Books as "beyond rare," this self-published work is widely considered to be the first book on surfing. It preceded Tom Blake's Hawaiian Surfboard by some four years and its delicate format meant that very few have survived. The Art of Wave Riding is not only instructive but a love-letter to the sport: "[O]ne feels sorry for those who have not learned to enjoy surf swimming," and "To spend a day in the sand ... developing a 'beautiful tan' is pleasant; but the real pleasure of a trip to the beach is derived from playing in the breakers." The bulk of the work is a step by step guide, as well as distinguishing between "glide waves" and "sand busters." It's beautifully illustrated with photographs of Venice beach that ably capture the spirit of surf culture in its infancy. The L.A. Times (July, 27, 1990) describes it further: "When Ronald Blake Drummond, now 83, paddled out at Doheny in the 1930s, he was one of the first to surf the break in southern Orange County. His 100-pound redwood board was shaped in a garage. His swim trunks were homemade. No one else was there. Surfers were so scarce in those days, they would stop to talk if they spotted each other's cars on coastal roads. It didn't matter whether they knew each other, but chances were they did." Drummond (1907-96) was born in Los Angeles, raised in Hollywood, and spent his summers on Hermosa Beach. It was here that he first learned to surf, and began to experiment with taking his canoe into the waves. He became a legend in surfing circles, appearing in the 1961 surfing classic Big Wednesday and he was featured in a 1967 issue of Surfer magazine. He attended UCLA and ran on the track team, though surfing was his first love and he continued this pursuit into his eighties. Surfing was first reported by members of Cook's third voyage when arriving in Hawaii in 1779. It has since become a vital part of beach culture in the Pacific.         India Speeches and an Introduction

London: Thornton Butterworth, Ltd.,, 1931. Octavo. Original orange light card printed wraps. Some slight chipping and to the tail edge of the upper wrap and of the spine, small piece chipped from the lower joint, just biting one letter of the spine lettering, light toning, a very good copy. First edition, wrappered issue. The 30s are characterized as Churchill's wilderness years, with his unrelenting opposition to Hitler being seen as main cause for his ostracism. However "another, and earlier reason lay in his bitter opposition to Baldwin's India policy … Churchill had always hit hard; not for him a round of gentlemanly sparring between friends. His fight to maintain full control of India employed not just the clenched fist but the bludgeon" (Woods, Artillery of Words).

Traduction de le Maistre de Saci. Mit 10 (davon 7 ganzs.) Orig.-Holzschnitten und 14 Orig.-Holzschnitt-Initialen von Eric Gill.

Weimar Cranach Presse für die Édition de Cluny Paris 1931 - 32 S., 1 Bl. Gr.-8°. Roter OHLdr. mit farb. marmor. Deckenbezug. - *** 83 Jahre Antiquariat Arno Adler (1932-2015) *** [Attributes: Hard Cover]

History of the First Division During the World War 1917-1919

The John C. Winston Company, Philadelphia 1931 - A magnificent World War I item: WARMLY--WITH FEELING AND GREAT AFFECTION--INSCRIBED BY 13 MAJOR AND BRIGADIER GENERALS WHOSE CAREERS WERE DEEPLY IMPACTED BY THEIR SERVICE TO THE FIRST DIVISION. From Major General Charles Summerall (division leader) to Brigadier General Frank Parker, from Robert Bullard to Omar Bradley, from William Sibert to Beaumont Buck, from George Duncan to Campbell King, this copy serves almost as a personalized album of tributes to the First Division from its leadership. All 13 inscriptions (including the 8 leaders cited above) take up the first half-dozen endpapers and half-title page and amount to 7 pages of self-revealing and candid reminiscences. The book itself, while not particularly uncommon, has held up nicely. A firm, solid, VG+ copy of the 1931 2nd edition. Bright gilt-design and lettering to the front panel and spine. Thick octavo, 450 pgs. "Compiled and Published by the Society of the First Division". With these personal, detailed inscriptions, this is a remarkable --even unique-- insight into the early and crucial role of the First Division in America's entry into Europe in 1917.         [Photo Album]: German and English Motordrome

1931. Oblong octavo. String-tied reddish-brown leatherette album with faux alligator pattern. Contains 36 black and white photographs, both tipped-in and loose, measuring between 3" x 2.25" to 8.25" x 6.25". The album also includes a folded 17.75" x 30" German broadside, various German newspaper clippings, Parr's ID card, his cut paper silhouette, exhibition tickets, and a Wall of Death postcard advertising the sideshow. Very good with moderate rubbing to the edges and with some toning and soiling to a few of the photographs.A photo album and scrapbook created by German motorcycle stunt rider Johnny Parr who performed in the motordrome carnival sideshow, aka the Wall of Death, in which a person rides a motorcycle inside a cylindrical room as high as 30 feet off the ground and is held in place by centripetal force. The trick started at Coney Island in the early 1900s, becoming a sideshow staple around America before spreading to England and Europe. There appears to be little information on Parr outside of this album which shows that he performed in the early 1930s around Germany (Wismar, Berlin, Grohn, Kiel), England (Scarborough, Leicester, Blackpool), France, and Sweden. The album show him with other riders, including Gene Shumway, William Ames, and Kitty Muller, with whom he performed tricks, as well as photos of fairs, various motordromes (with one under construction), standing by his bike, performing tricks, and with a sideshow barker before a crowd. There are also a few additional loose photos of the sea and a group of women dressed in 16th Century period garb. The best photo from the album is a wonderful image of a group of riders who performed in Scarborough, England in 1930 made up of a mix of American, English, and European riders, including Parr, posing under signs that read "Wizards of the Wall," with the town name incorrectly spelled "Scarboro." A wonderful collection of images of a traveling German daredevil in the early 1930s. .

La Duchessa di Padova Musiche di scena e intermezzi, per la tragedia di Oscar Wilde. Autograph musical manuscript full score

November-December 1931, Milano - Productions of Oscar Wilde's play The Duchess of Padua (1883) are rare, and Lualdi's setting appears to be unknown; the present work is not included in any of the available lists of Lualdi's works and there is no evidence that it was ever performed. Not in Steiger or the Enciclopedia dello Spettacolo. Indice Repertorio."Italian composer, conductor and writer on music Adriano Lualdi studied music in Rome and then in Venice with Wolf-Ferrari. In the 1920s he also became active as a music critic: among his numerous writings, Viaggio musicale in Italia is particularly valuable for the light it throws on the Italian musical world of the time. An ardent fascist, Lualdi was ‘elected’ to parliament in 1929 as representative of the Sindacato Nazionale dei Musicisti. He was an organizer of the first few Venice Festivals (1930–34) and director of the conservatories of Naples (1936–44) and Florence (1947–56). Lualdi’s association with fascism, which conditioned his teaching and organizing activities as well as his polemics, led to his being overrated in the 1930s, but in due course aroused such antagonism that his reputation may have suffered unfairly." John C.G. Waterhouse in Grove Music Online. Oblong folio (ca. 240 x 302 mm.). Modern brown morocco with gilt titling to upper. 1f. (title), 3-60 pp.; pp. 2, 6, 8, 12, 14, 24, 28, 30, 34, 36, 42, 46, 58-60 blank. Notated on 14-stave music paper, outer margins uncut, watermarked "C. Volpini."Music divided into fifty numbers. Title, "La Duchessa di Padova," and composer's name, "A. Lualdi," as caption title to each number. Music and part of literals in black ink; headings, scene numbers, rehearsal numbers, textual cues, more literals, and some notational corrections in red ink. Further additions in the composer's hand in pencil. Pagination in pencil to rectos including title and final blanks. Circled dot in blue pencil to upper right corners of most rectos. Signed and dated in black ink at conclusion: "Milano, 18 november 3 dicembre 1931 Adriano Lualdi." Title slightly foxed; occasional minor tears and creases. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Autograph postcard signed "Wilhelm Furtwängler," to Maria Proelss, December 27, 1931

St. Moritz - Written on one side of a plain postcard, addressed in another hand on the other side, approx. 4 X 6 in. A warm note from the great conductor, hoping for a meeting in Berlin, once he returns to Germany. Maria Proelss (1892-1962) was a pianist and painter, about whom Theodor Adorno said, upon her death, that "she played the piano most unconventionally: without all consideration, purely out of the need to realize the sense of the music . . . in stark contrast to the positivistic streamlined musicians who have made their way to the top in the last forty years." Two holes punched in left margin, where it was once preserved in a collector's binder, vertical crease, very good. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
