This copy is the Australian issue, published at the same time as those from England and the United States. All issues of this series are the rarest of the Disney publications.         THE STATES THROUGH IRISH EYES.

London: Heinemann, [1931]. - Large octavo. Gilt slate cloth. Frontis, plates and illustrations by the author. Binding a bit dull and rubbed, light foxing to endsheets, otherwise about very good, in slightly darkened, lightly foxed, modestly edgeworn dust jacket. First British edition -- the U.S. edition preceded by six months, but contained fewer illustrations. Presentation copy signed by the author on the title-page and inscribed by her on the front free endsheet: "To H.R.H. [Henrietta R. Haythornton (?)] with love from E.OE.S. May. 1931." Pasted-in on the verso of the plate between pp. 146-7 ("The Fairy Shoe") is an original black-and-white photograph depicting a small overcoat. Beneath the photograph, in Haythornton's hand (in faded black ink), is the story of how this garment was discovered under a stone in Ireland, named the "Fairy Coat" and shown at a party in 1923. The tale is reminiscent of Somerville's fairy shoe story that appears on pp 144-148 of this book. HUDSON, p.49.

        C. C. Rogers (C. C. Vyvyan, Clara Coltman [Colton] Rogers), Autograph Letter Signed to Douglas Hyde, First Irish President, with presentation copy to him of Gwendra Cove, in Jacket by Gwen Dorrien-Smith

Truro, Cornwall: Jordan's Bookshop, 1931 ALS (Autograph Letter Signed): Tipped in, an original manuscript letter from Clara Coltman Rogers (also Lady Vyvyan, and here under the pseudonym C.C. Vyvyan) to the first President of Ireland, Douglas Hyde, though at the time of this accompanying letter - October, 1932 - he was not yet, of course, president, and is addressed by her as Dr. Hyde.Book: Truro, Cornwall: Jordan's Bookshop, 1931. First edition, with the above ALS tipped in; scarce dust jacket illustrated by artist Gwen Dorrien-Smith. Signed as C.C.Vyvyan on the title page, also signed with inscription not personalized on the ffep, there dated September, 1932. See scans. The book is itself a presentation copy to Hyde. 12mo, 226 pp. + ads; just barely good condition for the book and jacket - the book with some water marks on the cover, bumped corners, and a small amount of splaying (curving) to the thin boards, and the jacket with age-toning, some soiling, and a number of peripheral chips. See scans. ALS itself is in near fine condition, being taped to the verso of the ffep. The disparity between the inscription date (September, 1932) and the date of the letter (October 23, 1932) is not explained, but may be because the inscription, which was itself generically worded and unsigned (with the signature being instead at the title page) would have been done as one of a number of such in September. A collection of charming Cornish character and scene pieces by C.C. Rogers (Clara Coltman [Coulton] Rogers, Lady Vyvyan), ala "Lady Vyvyan", with the scarce dustjacket, the art for which was executed by her friend and traveling companion, Gwen Dorrien-Smith. In the letter - after quipping "I love the picture of you translating over 4 tumblers of punch," she thanks Hyde for a book he had sent her ("Adventures of [not legible]"), and for his offer to loan her some Irish poems for her upcoming poetry anthology, though by that time the anthology had been completed. Unique ALS, with a scarce, collectible example of the book, involving a charming writer, a well-known jacket artist, and historical figure Hyde. L53n

ABOUT ZIONISM. Speeches and Letters by Professor Albert Einstein. [With an Original unrecorded photograph of Albert Einstein taken in Pasadena (February 1932) laid in].

Macmillan 1931 - SIGNED AND DATED BY ALBERT EINSTEIN. A Very Good+ hardback First U.S. Edition First Printing with foxing top, fore edges, toning, foxing eps. Owner stamp above Dr. Einstein's signature. In a very Good Dust Jacket with edge wear, tape, mild soil, mild chips. A Rare signed volume all the more so in the elusive Dust Jacket. Only one copy has appeared at auction (ABPC, AE) over the last 35 years. A centerpiece of an Einstein or modern Judaica collection. 8vo. 94 pp.Included is an original photographic print (8.5 by 6.0 cm) of Dr. Einstein taken in California, stamped on the verso "Pacific Photo Studio, Pasadena California" and dated "February 1932". The photograph and Dr. Einstein's signature can thus be precisely dated to the period of time he spent at the California Institute of Technology in December 1931 and early 1932 before returning to Germany for the last time in March 1932. This is an unrecorded photograph. It is not in the American Institute of Physics catalog "Images of Einstein" (1979). While Dr. Einstein is, of course, best known for his work in physics, his support of Zionism has long and deep roots. The current volume well articulates his backing the establishment of a center for Jewish life in the British mandate of Palestine. However, for some time he resisted the idea of a separate Jewish state. He wanted to see an agreement between Jews and Arabs by which they would live in peace in a single Middle East entity. After World War II and the holocaust his view changed. He supported the establishment of the Jewish State of Israel. Indeed, in 1952 with the death of Israel's President Chaim Weizmann, he was asked to become President of Israel but declined the invitation. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
