Really excellent for an example without the exceedingly rare DJ. With four black & white stills from the movie. INSCRIBED BY JAMES CAGNEY in January 1966 to "Edna & Jack Cordes/with all good wishes/ James Cagney." THE PUBLIC ENEMY (voted by the American Film Institute as the 8th greatest crime film in American film history) was a 1931 American Pre-Code crime film starring James Cagney and directed by William A. Wellman. The film tells the story of a young man's rise in the criminal underworld in prohibition-era America. Co-starring Jean Harlow, Edward Woods, Joan Blondell, and Mae Clarke. The screenplay is based on a never-published novel by two former street thugs: "Beer and Blood" by John Bright and Kubec Glasmon (who had witnessed some of Al Capone's murderous gang rivalries in Chicago!) A remarkable book in itself, one of those rare Grosset & Dunlap publications (like King Kong) which actually served as a first edition. And to find it signed by its star James Cagney? This may account for the presence of the earlier, 1931 "Adventures of Mickey Mouse" in the set, certainly a welcome addition. The only set we have handled in the original publisher's box.

      1930s or later. 1. Fair copy of tenor saxophone chorus part of three standards arranged (not composed) by Raksin. Folio (319 x 241 mm.). 3 pp. of a bifolium. Notated in ink on 12-stave music paper "Parchment Brand No. 3" issued by Belwin Inc, New York. P. 1: "Nobody's Sweetheart now," dated "September 1931"; p. 2: "Some of These Days," dated "Sept. 1931"; p. 3: "Dinah," dated "August, 1931" at conclusion. With inscription to head of p. 1: "To the best Tenor Sax Man I know. Tony from Dave Raksin," signed again and dated Sept. 27, 1931 at foot. Somewhat browned and soiled, especially at spine. Slightly frayed at edges; minor paper repair. 2. 1st alto saxophone part for "Sapphire." Octavo (242 x 172 mm.). 2ff. written on one side only. Notated in pencil on 10-stave music paper "Clarke's Music Tablet" issued by Theodore Presser Co., Philadelphia. Incomplete; part breaks off at the end of p. 2 after 85 measures. No signature or date. Stapled at upper left corner; creased and frayed at edges. 3. Tenor saxophone part (in B-flat) of an arrangement of Frederic Chopin's Prelude op. 28 no. 4 in E minor. Folio (319 x 241 mm.). Notated in ink on one side of the leaf only on 12-stave music paper. The part is written out twice, with minimal differences: in the second version, some enharmonic spellings have been corrected, but a "p[iano]" and "smorz." in the final measures are lacking. The first version is quite clear, but the heading, "Prelude - Chopin E. Minor" is written in haste and the instrument not specified. The second version, headed "Tenor Sax Prelude - E Minor Chopin," bears all signs of a fair copy. No signature or date. Minor repair to left edge. 4. 1 page, in all likelihood for tenor saxophone. Folio (ca. 320 x 240 mm). Notated in ink on 12-stave music paper paginated "6" at upper left corner. First staff: conclusion of an unknown piece in 4/4 time with a key signature of four sharps. Second staff: blank, with headed "Train from the West." Staves 3-12: [?]entire part for "Train from the West" (double bar at the end). Various verbal cues to other parts in both pencil and ink; notational corrections in pencil, partially erased; rehearsal numbers 32- 35 in red pencil framed in blue. No signature or date. Most probably used for conducting; frequent changes of tempo suggest that the fragment belongs to a film score. Slightly worn and creased; laid down to styrofoam with dark gray mat.. "Nobody's Sweetheart Now," a 1923 song by a team of authors including Elmer Schoebel (1896-1970), is a pop standard. The other two songs are considered jazz standards: "Some of These Days" was written by Shelton Brooks (1886-1975) and popularized by Sophie Tucker's 1911 recording; "Dinah," by Harry Akst (1894-1963) was first introduced in 1923 and remained highly popular throughout the 1920s and 1930s. "Train from the West" is most likely from a film score; the style of manuscript and the quality of paper of "Sapphire" suggest that this fragment belongs to an unknown arrangement from Raksin's very early years. "Mr. Raksin began piano lessons at 6 but later switched to the saxophone. At 12, he was leading a small dance band, which he expanded in high school for broadcasting on the local CBS station. He taught himself orchestration in high school and while majoring in music composition at the University of Pennsylvania played in society bands and radio orchestras." The Los Angeles Times, August 9, 2004, obituary for Raksin by Dennis McLellan. "In 1935 Raksin went to Hollywood to work with Charlie Chaplin on the music for Modern Times. This collaboration yielded one of the most effective original scores ever written for a silent film... Raksin settled permanently in Los Angeles in 1937, working in the Hollywood studios as a composer, arranger and/or orchestrator and studying privately with Schoenberg. Raksin's unusually complex textures and harmonies typecast him as a specialist in horror films and mystery, but he was adept in other genres, including westerns and comedies. In the early 1940s Raksin was employed at Fox, for whom he wrote the score to Laura (1944). One of his most original and enduring works, the film's reputation as a classic owes much to the haunting score; at its heart is Raksin's elusive melody for the title character which, remarkably, is never completed. The theme was a great popular success as a song (lyrics by Johnny Mercer), became a jazz standard and is one of the most performed and recorded of all film themes... Raksin worked regularly as a film composer until the early 1970s; his body of about 100 scores includes perhaps some 20 works that rank among Hollywood's very best..."         Masters of Mystery. A Study of the Detective Story

      London, Collins. 1931, 1931. FIRST EDITION 8vo. 288pp. Publisher's black cloth, titled in red to the spine, top edge red other edges untrimmed.. Bumped to the head of the spine, some minor shelwear and negligible scuffing. Internally clean and bright, solid and strong. Interestingly enough this copy is accompanied by its dustwrapper, an unprecedented event. The wrapper has chipping to the corners and general light wear to the extremities; the most significant defect of an otherwise strong wrapper is a shallow band of loss to the head of the spine, which however does not interfere with the titles. The wrapper design is very 1930's with its grey geometric design to the red titled spine and a montage of photographic mystery movie stills forming the front and rear panels. Credited as being the first literary examination of the mystery genre. H. Douglas Thomson was a renowned Holmes authority (he even gives his address as Baker St.) and an aficianado of crime writing. Includes chapters on 'The History of Detective Fiction', 'Edgar Allan Poe', 'Sherlock Holmes' and 'Thrillers'.

[331 x 250 x 50 mm]. xxxix, [i], 107, [3] pp. Original binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (signed in gilt on the rear turn-in) in niger (terracotta) goatskin, the front cover with the Gow crest in gilt. The spine divided into six panels, lettered in the second in gilt, the turn-ins tooled with gilt fillets, plain endleaves, top edge gilt, the others uncut. (A little marked and small patch of insect activity at upper right corner of the front cover). Contained in the original cloth drop-over box, lined with felt, the spine lettered in gilt. Limited to 300 copies, this being unnumbered but signed by Leonard Gow. A fine copy of this lavish production, clearly printed at great expense. Leonard Gow (1859-1936) was a shipping magnate, Glasgow businessman and resident of Camis Eskan on the Firth of Clyde. The catalogue describes 421 pieces, mostly of the K'ang Hsi period (1661-1722). Uncommon 1931 issue --featuring the photomontage work of the great John Heartfield on the front and rear covers-- of this very impressive State-sponsored Soviet magazine. "USSR in Construction" was clearly intended to inspire the masses and to celebrate Soviet culture--and each issue was devoted to specific areas of Soviet life. This issue (#12) was dedicated to the Soviet petroleum industry. This copy is crisp and clean and has held up very nicely. Bright and VG+ in its stapled, John Heartfield-illustrated wrappers, with several very small tears along the panel edges. Folio (16 1/2" tall), crisp, celebratory black-and-white gravures thruout. . First Edition. Original Wraps. Collectible; Very Good.

Lovely copy of Woolf's experimental novel (a "playpoem," in her own words), told in a series of six soliloquies spoken by the books' characters. With the cost of copies of the British edition in comparable condition running 3-4 times our price, an attractive copy of the American edition becomes a more accessible alternative.

With 16 tipped-in illustrations, some of which are photomontages utilizing metallic paper, linoleum, colour-printing, embossing and pochoir. The text is an expertly written guide to layout, profusely illustrated and printed in blue and black. "In 1930, Alfred Tolmer began to write his definitive treatise on graphic design, entitled Mise en Page: the Theory and Practice of Layout, which continues to be consulted today, if only for the inspirational layout of this book alone. The volume deals with photography, typography, and illustration, using unusual techniques of collage, pochoir, and coated papers. He published a French language edition himself and an English language edition with The Studio magazine, which was printed in London and includes the French text at the back" (Julie Mellby, Graphic Arts, Princeton Exhibition, May 2008). [16] pages, followed by 154 plates, collated complete; text in French; plates printed one side only, well-printed and detailed, clearly presented, with dates, source area, size, location of the frame if known; the plate list gives the owner name or institutional location for each of them as well; printed at Galeries Georges Petit Paris; approx. 11" x 15 1/2" size, printed on heavy paper stock; all loosely laid-in to the original printed portfolio; endpaper with previous owner bookplate of Nasha Lazuk Paris, and with another inscription in pen; portfolio in oatmeal-colored cloth, with the remains of the old ties; portfolio very soiled and worn and the inner paper wrapper covers are split and soiled, worn as well; occasional marginal closed tear to plates and preliminary text, a couple of plates with some edge darkening; we only find one that has more damage & some wrinkling, closer to the image; most are in very good condition and are very good examples of the framer's art as practiced in these areas at the time. Serge ROCHE (1898-1988) The son of a renowned water-colourist and art dealer, Serge Roche was familiar from childhood with the numerous artists who frequented the family boutique, among them Picasso, Renoir and Pisarro. Fascinated by the simultaneously masterful and invisible works of art that are frames and mirrors, Roche became their archivist and specialist, and devoted a gallery to them. His familiarity with the rococo furnishings and mirror cabinets of Baroque Europe, from Venice to Wurtzburg, led him to design and create furniture, objects and interior furnishings that were fought over by an exceedingly select clientele that included Chanel and Ali Khan.         Sacred College of Analytical Barbours Metabolic Chart of Mr. Hague. (Case 3986. Ref. DX2d57)

      October, 1931. Small folio. 8ff. Manuscript illustrated on several pages with drawings and decoupage. The product of a two-week stay on Caldey Island in Wales, this lengthy "modernist joke-poem" was composed by David Jones, Tom Burns, who was an editor at Sheed & Ward, and BBC Repertory Company actor Harman Grisewood for their mutual friend, Rene Hague, who had married Joanna Gill in November, 1930. This manuscript, which was the subject of an extensive exegesis by Thomas Dilworth in the 4 February 2011 issue of the Times Literary Supplement, is at once a reflection of the atmosphere on Caldey, the odd erudition of its authors, and the nature of their friendship (Burns and Grisewood remained close friends with Jones). Although Hague was also Jones's close friend, the portrait that emerges from the text is a fictional construct. The very opening page, with its color drawings of three "official" seals, identifies Hague as "'lecher' Hague" whose "last known alibi" was "Bond Salesman in UTAH (Salt Lake City)" and was also known as "'Cissy' Bourne" and "'High-Spot' Hopkins." It goes on to present several diagnoses ("Constant Nymphomania" and "Intermittent irritation of the Pelvic-girdle"), along with corresponding "treatments." There follows a page headed "Animals last seen with HAGUE" -- a rhinoceros, a boar, and a giraffe with an improbably long unicorn horn -- and Jones provides color illustrations of these creatures. Jones, in whose hand most of the manuscript is written, then presents a list of thirty-two associations that Dilworth, in the TLS article, calls an elaborate mockery of the chapter-schemas of Joyce's Ulysses. The next part of the document is a "Provosts Marshal's Report," which calls for Hague's immediate arrest. "As a preliminary measure," Jones writes, "we propose to confiscate Johanna (type and wife lower-case italic)," and here Jones delves a bit into the world of printing and design, at one point mentioning that "The said 'High-Spot Cissy'" was most recently seen "heading in the direction of the Nonsuch (sic) Press/ where there is evidence of his having worked/ for two years as a title page designer/ in conjunction with Mr Stanley Baldwin-Morison." An important document from a very fertile period in Jones's career, and this is the first time it has been on the market since 1981.

The manuscripts of Cardozo's 1932-1938 letters to Doris Webster are archived at UC Berkeley Libraries. Also see Andrew L. Kaufman, Cardozo, pp. 89-93. I can find little biographical information on Webster, but Cardozo's inscription suggest he read her books.
