        Sculptures d'Afrique, d'Amérique, d'Océanie. Collection André Breton et Paul Eluard. Paris, vente à l'hôtel Drouot, les 2 & 3 juillet 1931.

P., Etude de Me Alph. Bellier, 1931. - 27,5 x 22 cm, 54 p, 24 pl, carte. The Mahdi of Allah, the Story of the Dervish Mohammed Ahmed

London: Putnam, 1931. First edition. Hardcover. Here is a beautiful, jacketed British first edition of this scarce work bearing a lengthy introduction by Winston Churchill. Mohammed Ahmed was a messianic Islamic leader in central and northern Sudan in the final decades of the 19th century. Claiming that Allah had selected him as the true Mahdi, he found fertile political ground in the inhabitants?' resentment engendered by the corruption of and oppression by Egyptian rulers who had long dominated the region. Economic and political problems in Egypt further strengthened the Mahdi's hand, enabling the Mahdi's forces and followers to occupy most of the Sudan. In 1883 the Mahdists overwhelmed the Egyptian army of British commander William Hicks, and Great Britain ordered the withdrawal of all Egyptian troops and officials from the Sudan. In 1885, General Gordon famously lost his life in a doomed defence of the capitol, Khartoum, where he had been sent to lead evacuation of Egyptian forces. Though the Mahdi died in 1885, his theocracy continued until 1898, when the British general Kitchener reoccupied the Sudan. A very young Winston Churchill would participate in the decisive battle of Omdurman in September 1898, where the Mahdist forces were decisively defeated. The young war correspondent and British cavalry officer Churchill would write his second published book - The River War - about this British campaign in the Sudan. In The River War, Churchill was unusually sympathetic to the Mahdist forces and critical of imperial cynicism and cruelty - so much so that the 1902 second edition of his book excised much of his politically questionable criticism about Kitchener. In 1931, Churchill wrote a four-page introduction for this book about the Mahdi from - in the words of Churchill - "the Mahdi's point of view". Churchill's broadminded understanding endured three decades after he fought the Mahdi's forces: "It is interesting to know that [the Mahdi's] operations with fire and sword through the Sudan were based on a religious enthusiasm as sincere and philanthropic as that which inspired Saint Dominic or General Booth." This work is translated from the original German and Churchill's introduction appears only in the British and U.S. editions. Interestingly, the British first edition bears a tipped in slip after the copyright page printed in bright red ink disavowing acknowledgement of "the claim of the Dervish Mohammed Ahmed to the sublime title of 'The Mahdi of Allah'" in order "To avoid the possibility of causing offence to Mohammedan readers". Here is the first British edition, only printing, of this work, near fine in a near fine example of the scarce dust jacket. The tan cloth binding is clean, bright, and square with sharp corners, bright gilt, and virtually no wear. The contents are crisp, bright, and tight. No inscriptions. The only flaw noted is spotting substantially confined to the text block edges. The dust jacket is unclipped, clean, and complete with excellent shelf presentation - quite scarce thus given that the jacket for this edition is both thin and brittle. Minor wrinkling, short closed tears, and light wear is confined to extremities. The jacket spine shows only barely discernible toning, with the red print remaining clear and unfaded. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen B47.1, Woods B17.

By December they had reached the U.S.S.R. shown here in wintry scenes of farms covered in snow, men in traditional Russian winter clothing, and horses pulling carts.         GOSOKUI GOTAITEN KINEN KAIGAI JIJYO SHASHIN CHO: REMEMBERANCE ALBUM OF THE CORON

Shimonoseki-shi 1931, Kan-mon Kohtoh Yohsai Jo-Gakkoh. Pink. oblong album, cord tied spine, 33 x 22.5 cm., 322+94+103+25+. 3 pages, 547+b.w. photos, most 14 x 10 cm., ie one per page,. tissue guards, Japanese text, covers bit faded, else clean.. A MARVELOUS PHOTOGRAHIC ALBUM FROM OVERSEAS JAPANESE The title is a bit deceiving. Essentially a commemorative photo album by an extraordinary large number of overseas Japanese. The names, photos, details of these expatriates overseas Japanese who lived throughout the world. North and South America [America, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Brazil et al.], England, Canada, Europe, and other places are carefully outlined. * Each section is devoted to a geographical area, showing where they live, one or two photos, their home "Ken" or district, and "Sato" or home town in Japan, as well as how many years they have lived abroad, their occupation. A majority were farmers, store keepers, pharmacists, as well as learned people who did professional jobs. * The introduction illustrates the great leaders of the world and their cities: ie Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, London &c., as well as a famous photo of their prominent landmark building. There is also a substantial number of Japanese politicians and officials who offer their congratulations to the Emperor on his Coronation. * The album is 99% about the overseas Japanese, and is a virtual encyclopedia of information on them. For example those seeking to find their roots could use this to trace ancestors from Japan. It outlines a grand number of farmers and "truck farmers" throughout the area, and their family, with many showing the father/husband, wife/mother and all of the children. This is an invaluable research tool for graduate and advanced studies projects. * The book is well organized, uniform in their photos, entries and data found, which is conducive for computer analysis and research. Statistical analysis can also be easily accomplished on the data cited. This is an immense source and seldom found. While the pretext was to celebrate the Coronation of Emperor Hirohito, it turned out to be a stunning source book on the overseas Japanese, there was no other comprehensive and copious source compiled in such a meticulous manner during this period. * Below: A brief biography extracted from the Wikipedia: * Emperor Showa [aka: Showa Tenno], born April 29, 1901-January 7, 1989, was the 124th Emperor of Japan according to the traditional order of succession, reigning from December 25, 1926 until his death. * His personal name was Hirohito. Like all his predecessors, he is known since his death by a posthumous name, that, according to a tradition dating back to 1912, is the name of the era coinciding with his reign.         The Omnibus (1st printing)

      J. B. Lippincott & Co., Philadelphia 1931 - J. B. Lippincott & Co., Philadelphia, 1931. 822 pages. First edition, 1st printing. RARE 1st issue DJ. This is the 1st printing of Verne's classic omnibus which has gone on to several editions (Lippincott, Blue Ribbon) and printings (1931, 1951). Aside from this being a 1st printing, the plum here is the super-rare original red illustrated DJ. The original and fragile red illustrated DJ is often found only in pieces if at all. This fully intact DJ shows handling and wear with some textural scuffing. Small chipping along DJ edges. A plum in any condition let alone one that is still intact and attractive. DJ flap has been price clipped. Red illustrated cloth covers with illustrated map endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated by Helene Carter. Book is tight, square and clean. Endpaper verso has a neatly written name and address of previous owner. Book appears seemingly unread. Pages lay tight and undisturbed. Half-title page has a small faint stain at rear edge. A couple of very small areas on the edge of the red cloth show fade in color (minor). This is an incredibly well preserved copy in the scarce and desirable red DJ. The contents include Twenty thousand Leagues under the Sea, Around the World in Eighty days, The Blockade Runners, From the Earth to the Moon and the Trip Around It.         [Photo Portfolio]: Ceylon 20 - 24 I 1930

Blue cloth portfolio gilt lined with marbled paper. Small label with stamp of "C.C. Karlovy Vary. 1931" inside portfolio (possibly the location of the binder or the photographer, the city in the far northwest of the Czech Republic is also known by the German name Karlsbad). 98 beautifully printed platinum prints, each image measuring 5" x 7.5" surrounded with a plate mark impressed onto stiff 9.25" x 12" stock. Apparently a group of photographs made in January of 1930 by a German(?) photographer. Each is very neatly labeled in ink with a location and exact date on the verso, mostly in German, some in English. Each is numbered, although the meaning of the overall numbering system is not obvious. Condition is overall fine with very slight (and easily removable) soiling in the extreme margins; portfolio shows some wear and is sound and very good. Subjects include Peradeniya Gardens, archeological sites, temples and other notable buildings, mountain scenes, street scenes and buildings in Colombo and Anuradhapura (as well as scenes along the road between the two cities), several of elephants (including harvesting trees), several of the native peoples, a few of European tourists or administrators. .

        Canticum Canticorum Salomonis.

[Weimar: Cranach Presse, 1931]. A bright copy with a list of former publication and prospectus for the English edition inserted loose. 11 wood-engravings and 18 wood-engraved initials by Eric Gill. Jenson Antiqua type cut for the Press by E. Prince, printed in red and black throughout. One of 200 paper copies, out of a total edition of 268 numbered copies (this no.151) and editions in French and German. Tall 8vo., original half parchment over buff paper boards, spine lettered in gilt, t.e.g., others uncut, in original dust jacket and cardboard slipcase. With the spotting to the fore edge, otherwise a bright and crisp copy. A superb copy. Inserted loose is a 4 page list of former publications of the Cranach Press, plus a prospectus for the English edition including a Gill engraving. Kessler seems to have got the very best out of Gill, with a darker mood and deeper intensity in his engravings than was usual for the artist. Some of this is achieved by the style of printing but much must have been due to Kessler's tight control of the production and strong influence over Gill's work for it. The partnership produced a truly remarkable work of art.

Claiming that Allah had selected him as the true Mahdi, he found fertile political ground in the inhabitantsÂ’ resentment engendered by the corruption of and oppression by Egyptian rulers who had long dominated the region.

1931. Hi, This lot is a 1931 Original Hardback Wisden in very good Condition, This Wisden is a very nice book, especially for the year as the 1931 is a very large book, the hinges tend to give way but this is not the case in this book. The gilt to the front is very bright, the boards are very clean with only the odd small mark to the front and rear. The spine cloth has some wear to the base, not sure how to explain it but looks rubbed, not off putting though. The hinges are both excellent and springy and the inside of the book is very presentable without restoration. The page block at the top of the book is dark and the board corners are inturned slightly. Excellent photoplate. A Very Good 1931.
