Le Hedjaz dans la Guerre Mondiale.

Paris: Payot,, 1931. Préface du Maréchal Franchet d'Espérey. Octavo. Original printed light card wraps. 5 double-page maps to the text. Wraps a little rubbed and lightly soiled, pale browning to the text, but overall very good indeed. First edition, decidedly uncommon in commerce, just one copy traced at auction. Brémond was head of the French military mission to the Hejaz, sent by the French government to assert its presence in the region. Brémond was a very different character to Lawrence, with whom he liaised, and he wrote in part to set straight the record of the Arab Revolt as he saw it, offering a "more precise and less romanticised documentation of the intervention in the Hejaz, returning events to their true scale" (foreword). Peter Hopkirk's copy with the library bookplate inside the front panel of the wraps, and his pencilled comment to the front free endpaper, "Rare and very important for Brémond's role in the Arab Revolt.         Histoire de la Bienheureuse Raton. Fille de Joie. Illustrations de Charles Laborde

Paris: Editions Mornay, 1931. Hand painted vellum binding by Laborde on one of 300 on velin from a total issue of 355. In addition, this copy has an original watercolor by Laborde on the colophon page, although this is not called for in the colophon. The watercolor is of the "jolie fille" and is inscribed and signed by Laborde to the former owner. Bound: hand-painted vellum binding, unsigned but undoubtedly painted by Laborde himself, with rondel vignette of street scene on front panel and a different vignette on back panel, spine smooth with author and title and year lettered in gold, green, and black with floral decorations enclosed in painted gilt scroll; green and gold silk damask guards, all edges gilt, original wrapper bound in, matching slipcase, binding by Valmar, near fine. Laborde, one of the book illustrators working in Paris in the post-World War I period, was a social satirist and his works, usually in the form of colored etchings, are splendid examples of the Art Deco period. This title, although set in another period altogether, is still very "Art Deco" in feeling. Printed by Aulard, the etchings were pulled by Kaelin and the coloring was done by Berthelot.

Illustrated on every page with wood engravings by Gill, including leafy borders with figures, vignettes, and decorated initials. All of these are beautifully described by Colin Franklin as "affectionate and cheeky, erotic, enjoyable and relevant, decorative and explanatory, a balance of taste and eye." Bound in original morocco-backed patterned paper boards by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Rubbing and light bumps to some corners. Boards are bright and spines show only slight color variances. Overall, a close-to-fine copy of a landmark press book that is seldom encountered without flaws. T.e.g. (Chanticleer 63; Gill 281; Franklin, The Private Presses, p. 144).

        The Wind in the Willows.

London: Methuen, 1931., 1931. First Shepard Illustrated Edition. Octavo. Bound in publisher's green cloth, with Mole, Rat, and Mr Toad in gilt to front board, gilt titles to spine; top edge stained green, cartographic endpapers. Front cover of dust wrapper shows the three protagonists next to a caravan, with titles and a portrait of Rat to spine, and a bankside scene to rear cover. Lavishly illustrated by Ernest Shepard. Binding is tight, with minor bumping to spine ends; top edge somewhat faded, edges show incipient spotting. Internally clean, with negligible spotting to prelims. Dust wrapper is rubbed, worn at corners, with small tears to top of spine. The Island.

London: The Hawthorne Press & The Favil Press,, [1931]. 4 numbers issued in 3 parts (complete), quarto. Original decorative wrappers designed by Leon Underwood, number I stapled as issued, numbers II/III with linen spine, number IV stitched as issued. Wood-engravings throughout by Leon Underwood, Henry Moore,Gertrude Hermes, Blair Hughes-Stanton, Elizabeth Groom, Ralph Chubb, Eileen Agar, Laurence Bradshaw, Grace Rogers, Sidney Hunt, Laurence Josephs. Back cover of parts II/III missing, some dust marking to covers of parts II/III and IV; overall a very good set. First and sole edition of this interesting 30s quarterly, edited by the Hungarian emigré Josef Bard (1892-1975), later a friend and supporter of Ezra Pound, and the artist Leon Underwood (1890-1975). Mahatma Gandhi contributed a piece ("Religion and Art") to number IV. "[Underwood] joined the staff of the Royal College - numbering Barbara Hepworth among his pupils - and in 1921 opened his own Brook Green School of Drawing. Students included Henry Moore, Eileen Agar, Blair Hughes-Stanton, and Gertrude Hermes. The pupils, together with other young artists and intellectuals in the Hammersmith and Chiswick neighbourhood, formed a lively and creative coterie. They enjoyed fancy-dress parties at Girdler's Road, but also forged artistic alliances. From this Brook Green circle emerged in 1925 the English Wood-Engraving Society, and in 1931 a short-lived review, The Island, which carried artwork by Moore, Agar, and Laurence Bradshaw as well as Underwood's own woodcuts and writings" (ODNB). Scarce: Copac locates just two sets in British and Irish institutional libraries (V&A, Manchester), OCLC records only an incomplete set (number IV only) at the National Library of New Zealand.

        Essays in Persuasion.

London: MacMillan & Company, 1931. First edition of Keynes' first volume of collected essays. Octavo, original green cloth. Near fine in the original dust jacket which is chipped at the head and a few other closed tears. Uncommon in the original dust jacket. The essays in this volume show Keynes's attempts to influence the course of events by public persuasion over the period of 1919-40. In the light of subsequent history, 'Essays in Persuasion' is a remarkably prophetic volume covering a wide range of issues in political economy. In articles on the Versailles Treaty, Keynes foresaw all too clearly that excessive Allied demands for reparations and indemnities would lead to the economic collapse of Germany. In Keynes's essays on inflation and deflation, the reader can find ideas that were to become the foundations of his most renowned treatise, 'The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money. With startling accuracy Keynes forecast the economic fluctuations that were to beset the economies of Europe and the United States and even proposed measures which, if heeded at the time, might have warded off an era of world-wide depression.

Contributions to a British Association Discussion on the Evolution of the Universe" in Nature 128, 1931, 704-722

      - FIRST EDITION OF AN IMPORTANT 1931 VOLUME THAT INCLUDES A SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT ON THE ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE, OR COSMOLOGY, based upon a specially held meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Cosmology, at the time, was considered "risky science because it teeters just on the balance between physics and metaphysics, between science and philosophy" (Hassing, Final Causality in Nature, 188). The beginnings of scientific, modern cosmology have been dated to this meeting. The supplement is the only published account of the unique discussion set up to by the British Association for the Advancement of Science for their centenary meeting. The discussion includes contributions by the scientists James Jeans, Abbé G. Lemaître, Willem de Sitter, Arthur Eddington, Robert A. Millikan, Edward Milne, J. C. Smuts, Ernest Barnes (a theologian), and Oliver Lodge. "By my own reckoning, modern scientific cosmology began on the 29th of September, 1931, on the occasion of the British Association for the Advancement of Science's special session devoted to "The Evolution of the Universe". I pick this date simply because the session marked the achievement, on the part of all the principal cosmological practitioners, of a consensus view about the nature, structure, and origin of the universe. After this meeting, for roughly the next two decades, most mainstream cosmologists, if asked, would tell pretty much the same story about what the universe was like, where it had come from, and, most importantly, what evidence they had in favor of this view" (ibid). "[Sir Arthur] Eddington is probably the one most responsible for the development and promulgation of the core tenets of the consensus [views the meeting agreed upon]. Eddington's view just prior to the BA meeting held that 'our actual universe may probably be considered as expanding from an initial state something like 'Einstein's world' towards a limiting state like 'de Sitter's world'" (Hetherington, Encyclopedia of Cosmology, 485). After the meeting, the consensus view held and was affirmed by almost all those present by Georges Lemaître, Arthur Eddington, Robert Millikan, Oliver Lodge and Willem de Sitter. The tenets of modern cosmology had been determined. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Macmillan. 4to. (11 x 8.25 inches; 275 x 206mm). Entire volume, not ex-libris. Handsomely and professionally rebound in half leather. 5 raised bands at the spine, gilt-ruled. One red morocco label; one black morocco label; both gilt-lettered. Tightly and very solidly bound. Clean and bright throughout save for three small spots at the head of the first page of the supplement section. Withal, near fine condition.

An uncommon book rarely found in dust jacket.. (#149351). First edition. Collects thirteen stories; "... a more varied collection whose best weird story is the haunted house story 'The Frontier Guards.'" - Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-200. "It has been far too easy to put Wakefield in the (rather roomy) pigeonhole of 'traditional English ghost stories', jumbling him together with such truly minor figures as Dare and Munby, etc. It's true that he lacked the self-branding instincts of Blackwood, M. R. James. Dunsany and Hodgson (to name the four contemporary British giants with which Lovecraft closes out his 'Essay on Supernatural Horror in Literature'). But variety is not necessarily a defect. Wakefield also had a certain robustness in his voice that is unexpected in weird fiction. It seems fair to say that the no-man's-land (or everyman's-land) in between the obvious giants and the obvious pygmies is where Wakefield belongs." - Robert Eldridge. Spine rolled and a little faded through the dust jacket but an excellent copy in the somewhat rubbed and frayed dust jacket. First edition, first impression. With the extensive presentation inscription of the book's dedicatee to the front free endpaper, "My dear Walter de la Mare, It is not sheer vanity that leads me to send you this book, but the feeling that you will value and enjoy its beauty and its subtlety, to say nothing of its fun. Yours Conal O'Riordan 7th February 1931 N.B. It will not be out until next Thursday". A scarce thriller widely considered to be one of Brophy's best books. O'Riordan was a key figure in the Irish theatre in general and the Abbey theatre in Dublin in particular. An actor and playwright. Having fallen out with most of his cohorts in the years before the Great War he turned to writing novels for which Brophy dedicated this work.

        India Speeches and an Introduction

London: Thornton Butterworth, Ltd,, 1931. Octavo. Original orange wrappers, spine and covers printed in black. Housed in a custom red quarter morocco solander box. Small bumps to head and foot of rear wrapper, a touch of wear to spine ends, faint foxing to edges. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression, wrappered issue (the book was issued simultaneously in hardback). The 1930s are characterized as Churchill's wilderness years, with his unrelenting opposition to Hitler being seen as main cause for his ostracism. However "another, and earlier reason lay in his bitter opposition to Baldwin's India policy … Churchill had always hit hard; not for him a round of gentlemanly sparring between friends. His fight to maintain full control of India employed not just the clenched fist but the bludgeon" (Woods, Artillery of Words).

      - This magnificent and richly drafted pictographic map, by the celebrated American illustrator Rockwell Kent, depicts the region around Illorsuit, Greenland, where the artist resided for a year, from 1931 to 1932. The scene is taken from a southwestward-oriented perspective, in the manner of a bird’s eye view. With the virtuous juxtaposition of both subtle and vigorously rich shading, Kent enlivens the dramatic topography of glaciers and rocky shores, as icebergs flow into the waters of Baffin Bay, while place names are written in a very neat hand. During the 1930s and 1940s, Rockwell Kent was a famous man. He was one of America’s most renowned illustrators and mural designers, as well as a prominent progressive political activist. While feted in New York’s higher echelons, Kent regularly went on lengthy retreats to remote parts of the world in an effort to seek artistic inspiration and to seek relief from the stifling social scene of Manhattan. Kent had first visited Greenland in 1929 and was eager to return, noting that his previous visit had "had filled me with a longing to spend a winter there, to see and experience the far north at its spectacular worst; to know the people and share their way of life." In July 1931, Kent arrived in the village of Illorsuit, on Greenland’s west coast. He built a small house and after his "cursed libido" got a hold of him, began an affair with Salamina, his housekeeper. As a socialist, Kent considered the Inuit society to be a utopia, free of class distinctions and the pretentiousness he so disliked about home. He loved the Greenlanders and was captivated by the hauntingly beautiful Arctic scenery. He later recalled that his year in Illorsuit was the happiest and most artistically productive time of his life. However, Illorsuit was not completely cut-off from the outside world. One day, a German film crew suddenly arrived and began shooting scenes for the movie S.O.S. Eisberg. Even the libidinous Kent was astounded by the number of men that each night visited the tent of the film’s star, Leni Riefensthal, whom locals nicknamed "The Mattress". Kent recorded his year in Illorsuit in his book, Salamina (1935), which was imbued throughout with his trademark wry sense of humour and almost shocking candour. Named after his Greenlandic mistress, but dedicated to Kent’s then wife, Frances (a very bold move – perhaps too bold - Kent and Frances later divorced!), the book was illustrated with numerous drawings by the author. Very well received upon its publication, Salamina is considered to be one of Kent’s greatest works. The present map, an original hand-drawn artwork by Rockwell Kent, exquisitely sets the geographical scene of Salamina. Kent drafted it, either upon his return to New York State or during his final trip to Greenland in 1935, when he was frenetically preparing the book’s illustrations for his publisher. The present manuscript map was the basis for the printed map that appeared opposite the opening page of Salamina. The printed version is true to its antecedent, save for the alteration of a few place names. Near the centre of the map is "Igdlorssuit" (the contemporary name of Illorsuit), where Kent resided, located on what the Danes called "Ubekjendt Eiland ("Unknown Island," today spelled "Ubekendt"), which Kent renamed "Kjendt Eiland" ("Known Island"), following his acquaintance with the region. To the east, over "Igdlorssuit Sound," are a series of fjords and ice fields, leading into the interior of Greenland, dominated by the mysterious mass of "Inland Ice". To the south, over the "Umanak Fiord" (Uummannaq Fjord), is the "Nugsuak" (Nuussuaq) Peninsula, and beyond, "Disko Id." Kent’s whimsical humour is marvelously revealed on the map. Always irreverent of pompous tradition and commercial pandering, Kent takes aim at the longstanding propensity of European explorers to "name" (ie. rename) lands and geographical features that had already been given names by their non-European indigeno
