[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Die Kartonkassette fleckig und mit stärkeren Gebrauchsspuren. Innen sehr schönes und ausserordentlich sauberes Exemplar. – Parr/Badger, The Photobook: A History I, S. 80: „The project was a rare collaboration ., not only between scientist and photographer but also between husband and wife. Albin-Guillot was one of the most successful Parisian photographers of the 1920s, her style a commercially astute blend of pictorialism and modernism. She was renowned for a wide range of photography, her portraits, nudes and landscapes, her illustrations for books of modern French poetry, her cosmetic and pharmaceutical advertisements. Micrographie décorative, however was a more personal project, a memorial to her husband, who had died in 1929. He had been a specialist in preparing specimens for the microscope and his wife had made microphotographs for him. In these artistic experiments. microscopic preparations were privately printed by photogravure onto various coloured and metallic papers by the well-established Parisian printing house of Draeger Frères, who were responsible for many artists' books. . It was included in Beaumont Newhall's historical overview of photography at New York's Museum of Modern Art in 1939 'Photography 1839-1939'." - Sehr selten / very rare. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Autograph Quotation signed ("Prince Smad"). In French.

No place, July 1931. - Folio. 1 page. On uncut wove paper, bearing the Schoellers-Parole blind embossed seal, margins uncut. The original autograph contribution of Samad Khan to the Committee of the World League for Peace (Ligue Mondiale pour la Paix), a remarkable organization formed in 1925 with close ties to the League of Nations. The Committee itself was composed of such notaries as Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, King Carol II of Romania, John D Rockefeller, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein, who personally gathered the present manuscripts over the course of seven years (1925-32). Among the public figures who contributed to the project were numerous dignitaries from the newly-created League of Nations' member states. "War, terrible in all times, has become vain and profitless today, and is equally disastrous for all involved, as even the counquering countries, as well as neutral countries, without exception, can no longer escape the suffering engendered by that calamity! The solidarity between nations has thus become fatally clear. Because of this, peace is no longer simply an ideal, it is becoming a necessity and an obligation. Even the most sceptical among us must finally give pause and reflect. Yet, how rarely are the means we choose to attain this much desired goal the most practical ones! Despite the fact that it is easy to understand that warfare and arms are merely effects, and that it is illogical to wish to avoid them while their causes persist! Can we extinguish an electric light without turning off the switch? Peace can only be seriously envisaged if it is also on a solid base, honest and practical, cemented by the work of the League of Nations, itself equipped with the effective means of intervention! Security for all, men of state and the people, should be the objective, the effect of which will be an inevitable disarmament and sincerity between nations. General fear must make way for a general trust and for faith in the respect of rights and in the future of humanity. Our civilisation owes this to itself, lest it be overcome. [Signed] Prince Smad, former Extraordinary Ambassador to London, former Persian Minister in Holland, and in France, former Premier Delegate of Persia to the Conference in The Hague and the Conference on the Revision of the Geneva Convention, and Permanent Court of Arbitration". Prince Samad was Ambassador to London, Holland, France. He personally owned the Embassy in Paris, which he made his home. Briefly Prime Minister of Persia in 1918. Pax Mundi.

Introduction a la phénoménologie.

Paris, 1931. Lex 8vo. Original printed wrappers. Quite worn - and clearly very thorougly read. Spine taped together. Wrappers chipped at edges, just touching inscription at front wrapper. Wrappers loose. Text nice and clean. (2), VII, (1), 136 pp. + 1 f. (blank).. The rare first edition of the main work of transcendental phenomenology, Husserl's highly important "Cartesian Meditations" - which came to profoundly influence French philosophy for decades to come - with a very interesting presentation-inscription for the important philosopher, who is now primarily remembered for introducing the philosophy of Husserl to the English speaking public, "Herrn Prof. Chr. V. Salmon/ mit herzlichen Grüssen/ E Husserl"; Salmon famously translated Husserl's important Encyclopedia Britannica article on Phenomenology and lectured on Husserl in English, spreading his thoughts in the English speaking world - just as Lévinas did in France. This seminal work is based on two two-hour lectures that Husserl gave at the Sorbonne in 1929. Over the next couple of years, Husserl, together with his assistant Eugen Fink, expanded and elaborated upon the text of the lectures and had Lévinas and Gabrielle Peiffer translate them, under the supervision of Alexandre Kyré, Husserl's former student. The work was not published in German in Husserl's lifetime and only appereared in 1950. In 1960 an English translation appeared. The "Cartesian Meditations" constitutes Husserl's introduction to transcendental phenomenology and introduces many of his most important ideas - the transcendental reduction, the epoché, static and genetic phenomenology, eidetic reduction, and eidetic phenomenology. "Having received his M.A. in philosophy at Oxford, Christopher Verney Salmon studied with Husserl in Freiburg during the winter semester of 1922 and again during 1926-1927. In the summer of 1927 Salmon defended the doctoral dissertation that he had written under Husserl's direction, "The Central Problem of Hume's Philosophy: A Phenomenological Interpretation of the First Book of the "Treatise on Human Nature". The was published a year later in Husserl's "Jahrbuch", and Husserl refers to that forthcoming publication in his Bibliography to Draft A of the Article. A year after translating the EB article, Salmon was appointed a lecturer at the University of Belfast, and he continued to present Husserl's philosophy to the English-speaking public. On December 2, 1929 he delivered a lecture to the Aristotelian Society in London, "The Starting-Point of Husserl's Philosophy". Soon after that he helped W.R. Boyce Gibson read the page proofs of Boyce Gibson's translation of Husserl's "Ideas", and in 1932, a year after the work came out in English, Salmon published a review of it. However, contact between Salmon and Husserl fell off after that, and in the spring of 1937 Husserl noted that Professor Salmon had not written to him over the last years. Salmon published a brief article in French on Husserl in 1947. He died in 1960."         Contributions to a British Association Discussion on the Evolution of the Universe" in Nature 128, 1931, 704-722

FIRST EDITION OF AN IMPORTANT 1931 VOLUME THAT INCLUDES A SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT ON THE ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE, OR COSMOLOGY, based upon a specially held meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Cosmology, at the time, was considered "risky science because it teeters just on the balance between physics and metaphysics, between science and philosophy" (Hassing, Final Causality in Nature, 188). The beginnings of scientific, modern cosmology have been dated to this meeting. The supplement is the only published account of the unique discussion set up to by the British Association for the Advancement of Science for their centenary meeting. The discussion includes contributions by the scientists James Jeans, Abbé G. Lemaître, Willem de Sitter, Arthur Eddington, Robert A. Millikan, Edward Milne, J. C. Smuts, Ernest Barnes (a theologian), and Oliver Lodge. "By my own reckoning, modern scientific cosmology began on the 29th of September, 1931, on the occasion of the British Association for the Advancement of Science's special session devoted to "The Evolution of the Universe". I pick this date simply because the session marked the achievement, on the part of all the principal cosmological practitioners, of a consensus view about the nature, structure, and origin of the universe. After this meeting, for roughly the next two decades, most mainstream cosmologists, if asked, would tell pretty much the same story about what the universe was like, where it had come from, and, most importantly, what evidence they had in favor of this view" (ibid). "[Sir Arthur] Eddington is probably the one most responsible for the development and promulgation of the core tenets of the consensus [views the meeting agreed upon]. Eddington's view just prior to the BA meeting held that 'our actual universe may probably be considered as expanding from an initial state something like 'Einstein's world' towards a limiting state like 'de Sitter's world'" (Hetherington, Encyclopedia of Cosmology, 485). After the meeting, the consensus view held and was affirmed by almost all those present by Georges Lemaître, Arthur Eddington, Robert Millikan, Oliver Lodge and Willem de Sitter. The tenets of modern cosmology had been determined. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Macmillan. 4to. (11 x 8.25 inches; 275 x 206mm). Entire volume, not ex-libris. Handsomely and professionally rebound in half leather. 5 raised bands at the spine, gilt-ruled. One red morocco label; one black morocco label; both gilt-lettered. Tightly and very solidly bound.         Autograph letter signed.

Ostende, March 1931. - Large 4to. 1 p. To Belgian author, filmmaker and documentarist Henri Storck on the use of his music in one of Storck's films: "Cher ami, Vos lignes sympathiques me charment. - Ensor had composed the mentioned piece in 1923. - Some damage to edges (not touching text); on headed paper.

One of the first BATIK printed books (using vegetable dyes) this features Francoise's charming, stylized full color illustrations on every page. Quite scarce and certainly ususual.         Duineser Elegien. Elegies from the Castle of Duino

London: The Hogarth Press,, 1931. Translated from the German by V. Sackville-West and Edward Sackville-West. Octavo. Original half vellum, tan cloth sides, titles to spine gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Woodcut initials by Eric Gill. Slight tanning along bottom edge of boards and spine, very slight spotting to edges and a few end-leaves, an excellent copy in the jacket that is tanned and dust soiled, somewhat rubbed and spotted, but still entirely intact. First edition, first impression, number V of an estimated ten paper copies not for sale (aside from a signed limited edition of 238 signed copies, of which eight were printed on vellum), this printed for Vita Sackville-West herself, and inscribed on the front free endpaper, "John Heygate, from V.S.W.". The writer John Heygate (1903?-1976) was one of the Bright Young People, notable for his affair with Evelyn Gardener while she was married to Evelyn Waugh. Heygate married Gardner (after her subsequent divorce) in the year before the publication of this book. He is portrayed as John Beaver in A Handful of Dust. The inscription to Heygate of Rilke's elegies is rendered more appropriate by his close relationship with Germany: he had travelled to Heidelberg in 1926 for the Foreign Office, and in the following years wrote several books about his visits to Germany, as well as co-writing two films made in Germany and starring Lilian Harvey ("The Only Girl (Ich und die Kaiserin)" 1934, and "Black Roses (Schwarze Rosen)" 1935), while working for the Gaumont-British Picture Corporation in collaboration with the German UFA film company, Babelsberg, near Berlin. He was present at the Nuremberg Rally, 1935, in the company of his friend Henry Williamson, sitting next to Unity and Diana Mitford. In spite of his political sympathies he served in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War.

        AIZ.Das Illustrierte Volksblatt

1931. HEARTFIELD, John. AIZ. Das Illustrierte Volksblatt. Volume X, No. 10. Illustrated with photomontage by John Heartfield. Folio, loose as issued. Berlin: Neuer Deutscher Verlag, 1931. |~||~||~||~||~| From 1930 to 1938 Heartfield provided photomontages that were published in the Arbeiter-Illustrierte Zeitung. Many of these astonishing images are masterpieces of the art of caricature, and resulted in Heartfield having to flee for his life. This issue has the photomontage showing two raised fists, one black and one white. The issue itself was devoted to "the life and struggle of the black race." The usual edgewear but overall sound.         J N HOFZINSER'S CARD CONJURING

London: George Johnson. 1931. First English edition, first printing. Publisher's original blue cloth with gilt titles to the upper board and spine. A very good copy indeed, the binding bright and firm with some light rubbing of the extremities and small spots of mottling. The contents are entirely complete, clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. An excellent example of this scarce title. One of only 500 copies printed, 80 of which perished when the binder's warehouse was destroyed in the London Blitz of October 1940. Without the publication of this book the work of Johann Hofzinser, considered the father of modern card magic, might well have been forgotten. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
