The Griffon Bruxellois may refer to three different breeds, the Griffon Bruxellois, the Griffon Belge and the Petit Brabançon. Identical in standard except for coat and colour differences, in some standards they are considered varieties of the same breed, much like Belgian Sheepdogs. The three variations of this dog, the Brussels Griffon (Griffon Bruxellois), the Belgian Griffon (Griffon Belge), and the Petit Brabançon, all descend from an old type of dog called a Smousje, a rough coated, small terrier-like dog kept in stables to eliminate rodents, similar to the Dutch Smoushond. The little wire-haired dog in the foreground of the Jan van Eyck painting The Arnolfini Marriage is thought to be an early form of this breed. In Belgium coachmen were fond of their alert little Griffons d’Ecurie (wiry coated stable dogs) and in the 19th century, they bred their Griffons with imported toy dogs. Breeding with the Pug and King Charles Spaniel brought about the current breed type, but also brought the short black coat that led to the Petits Brabançon, which was originally a fault in the breed. The spaniels also brought the rich red and black and tan colour of the modern Griffon Bruxellois and Griffon Belge. The Griffon Bruxellois grew in popularity in the late 19th century with both workers and noblemen in Belgium. The first Griffon Bruxellois was registered in 1883 in the first volume Belgium's kennel club studbook, the Livre des Origines Saint-Hubert (LOSH). The popularity of the breed was increased by the interest of Queen Marie Henriette, a dog enthusiast who visited the annual dog shows in Belgium religiously, often with her daughter, and became a breeder and booster of Griffon Bruxellois, giving them international fame and popularity. Many dogs were exported to other countries, leading to Griffon Bruxellois clubs in England (1897)[3] and Brussels Griffon clubs in the U.S. (1945.) The First World War and Second World War proved to be a disastrous time for the breed. War time is difficult on any dog breed, and the recovering numbers after the First World War were set back by increased vigilance in breeding away from faults such as webbed toes. By the end of the Second World War, Belgium had almost no native Griffon Bruxellois left, and it was only through the vigilance of dedicated breeders (in the U.K. particularly) that the breed survived at all. The breed has never been numerous or popular, but had a brief vogue in the late 1950s, and now is generally an uncommon breed. There has been a recent increase in interest in the United States due to the appearance of a Griffon in the movie, As Good as It Gets, and also because of a general increase in interest in toy dogs.         Collection of Heartfield Covers. 26 Titles.

1931. HEARTFIELD'S PHOTOMONTAGE "TURNED THE BOOK COVER INTO A POLITICAL INSTUMENT" HEARTFIELD, John. A collection of 26 volumes, all of which are preserved in the original publisher's bindings designed and illustrated by John Heartfield, including novels by Upton Sinclair and Ilja Ehrenburg, anti-Nazi books and work in praise of Communist Russia. |~||~||~||~||~| An impressive collection of strikingly original book jackets designed by John Heartfield which he designed for his brother's firm, Malik-Verlag, for works by such authors as Upton Sinclair and Ilya Ehrenburg. Heartfield placed his photomontage images on the front and back of the jackets to instantly convey the books' contents. This was a dramatic departure from the plain jackets of the period. According to the great designer and typographer Jan Tschichold, Heartfield was the inventor of photomontage book covers; furthermore, his designs for Malik were the first of their kind (Das neue Typographie, 1928, p. 228). "Today it is almost forgotten that [Heartfield] tested the artistic-political impact of photomontage on a wallflower that nobody took notice of, the dust jacket. Photomontage appeared for the first time on this slim, oblong, double page as a genre integrating the graphic, literary, and agitational means of expression into something new. The works, created mostly for the Malik publishing company in the twenties, were a bold experiment: Heartfield made the dust jacket 'active,' and let it 'fight' for the author. It is hardly imaginable today what a fascinating contract those miniature montages were in contract to the usual, sober or whimsical book covers" (Lilly Becher, quoted by Pachnicke). In very good to fine condition. LITERATURE: Pachnicke, John Heartfield (New York: Abrams, 1991, pp. 96-99, with numerous reproductions). PLEASE INQUIRE FOR COMPLETE LIST

Put in His Thumb, TLS and Signed and Inscribed Card to Philip Jessup.

1931 - With an Inscribed Presentation Card to Philip Jessup Llewellyn, K[arl] N[ickerson] [1893-1962]. Jessup, Philip [1897-1986]. Put in His Thumb. New York: The Century Company, [1931]. [x], 119 pp. Quarter cloth over speckled boards, black lettered title to front cover, deckle edges, most signatures unopened. Light shelfwear and soiling. Near-fine 5" x 3" presentation card inscribed to Philip Jessup and 8-1/2" x 11" mimeographed typescript presentation letter laid in. * First edition, first printing. Collected poems of one of the leading American legal thinkers of the twentieth century. One of these is a tribute to Oliver Wendell Holmes. The presentation letter is in the manner of a press release. It says, in part: "I hope you like them. But if you don't, send them back and get a check. (.) One thing will interest you: the number of law-men whose letters showed, or shyly confessed, or brazenly announced interest in verse is such as to threaten the existing order. Some unsuspected and insidious propaganda has been poisoning the purer factuality of the profession. Unless something is done about it, and at once, verse-in-lawyers may become respectable." The part-printed laid-in card features a caricature of a naked Llewellyn (?) sitting cross-legged and gesturing to a motto: "Nothing endures, surely not these. But me they please - Now they are yours." Below this motto is an autograph inscription to Philip Jessup dated October 7, 1931: "To my friend Phil Jessup, these play-word jingglings, as a contrast to the serious ones of law." Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice, important legal scholar and U.S. diplomat, was credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. He was a representative to the United Nations General Assembly, as well as a U.S. ambassador at large from 1949 until his resignation in 1953. Like Llewellyn, he was a professor of law at Columbia University. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Stray Shots

The Derrydale Press, New York 1931 - Clark, Roland. First edition, one of 535 copies. With 13 drypoint etchings, the first, frontispiece, signed by Clark. ii, 124 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. A lovely copy of a scarce volume that is less a book than a work of art. Roland Clark's matchless drypoints, printed from the plates on fine watermarked deckle edge paper, are luminous-one doesn't have to be a devotee of wildfowling to appreciate their artistry. If one is a devotee, this book is profoundly satisfying. Frazier acknowledges this: "One of the most beautiful of the Derrydale Press books in every phase. In my opinion this one will continue to go up in value forever." Siegel 58; Frazier C-5-a Original black cloth, title and device on upper cover in white and gold, bottom and fore-edges uncut, a fine copy.

» EDITION ORIGINALE DEDICACEE [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Hodder & Stoughton, London 1931 - Jackson, John Hughlings (1835-1911). Selected writings of . . . edited . . . by James Taylor . . . with the advice and assistance of Gordon Holmes . . . and F. M. R. Walshe. 2 vols. xiv, 500; viii, 510pp. Frontispieces in both volumes. London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1931. 247 x 165 mm. Original cloth, dust-jackets (slight edgewear). Fine set. Gift inscriptions in both volumes, dated 27 September 1985, to Dr. Edward Jones of the Montreal Neurological Institute "to mark his presentation of the 49th Hughlings Jackson Lecture on ‘A unifying hypothesis of cerebral cortical organization.’" First Collected Edition of Hughlings Jackson’s most important neurological works, including his key papers on epilepsy and epileptiform convultions and the evolution and dissolution of the nervous system. Although Jackson was a prolific author, publishing over 300 papers on clinical neurology and neurophysiology, he never produced a larger textbook or monograph—a gap filled by this collected edition of his major neurological writings.         The World Crisis: The Eastern Front

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1931. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is an exceptional copy of the sixth and final book of Churchill's acclaimed history of the First World War and essential to filling a full set of British first editions. Scarcity owes to the fact that the first printing was just 5150 copies, as opposed to 7500 for the British first edition of each of the preceding five books. Consequently these are rarely offered outside of sets. In proposing the book to his publisher, Churchill wrote: "In the previous volumes of the World Crisis I have described only in a few pages the course of events in the Eastern theatre. They have merely been the background of our main drama of the war. But now I think I might write a volume called 'The Eastern Front', which would be separate from but supplementary to our five volume history." This British first edition, first printing is an exceptional copy and quite scarce thus, a near-fine plus binding with truly fine contents. This copy is as fine an example as we see without the original dust jacket, and indeed better than some of the very few jacketed copies we have encountered. We very seldom see such copies at all, let alone offered outside of a full set of first editions. The blue cloth binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and vivid spine gilt. We find almost none of the scuffing endemic to the smooth cloth and no discernible dulling to the spine. Searching for exterior flaws, we note only a little wrinkling and trivial wear at the spine ends and a few tiny blemishes to the rear cover. The contents are improbably crisp and clean for the edition. We find absolutely no trace of the usual spotting. Even the page edges are beautifully clean, with only mild age-toning. We find no previous ownership marks. All illustrations and maps are pristine, including the color folding map at page 368. A lovely copy, suitable for anchoring a top tier first printing set.         [Photo Album]: Germany and U.S.S.R. Trip

1931. Oblong octavo. Measuring 6.5" x 9". String-tied striped cloth over boards. Contains 91 sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.5" x 3" to 3" x 5" affixed to stiff black pages, some with captions in English. Near fine album with some fading on the cloth with near fine or better photographs.A photo album compiled on a trip to Germany and Russia in September 1931 via the German ship Europa. The ship was one of the largest German vessels built in the 1930s and had only been in operation for a year when this trip was taken. Photos taken on board show "the gang on the Europa" taking silly posed shots as well as candids of the crew and passengers. They began their trip in Berlin in October of 1931 with photos around the city of, among other things, policeman, grand buildings, and the zoological gardens. By December they had reached the U.S.S.R. shown here in wintry scenes of farms covered in snow, men in traditional Russian winter clothing, and horses pulling carts. There are photographs of women working at a river, a woman on a tractor, and an enormous mural of Stalin and Lenin's face made from flowers.A collection of interesting German and Russian scenes before World War II. .

        Rifleman and Hussar.

London: John Murray, , 1931. With a Foreword by Field-Marshal The Viscount Plumer. Octavo. Original green linen, title gilt to spine, Marling's arms to the upper board, in dust jacket. Frontispiece and 9 other plates, 3 full-page maps, plan to the text. Mild browning to the endpapers, light foxing to the for-edge, but very good in slightly rubbed and soiled jacket, with tape reinforcement along the top edge, remains attractive. First edition, first impression. Remarkable autobiography by a remarkable soldier. Marling served in the First Boer War, 1880-81, Suakin Campaign 1884, winning the VC at Tamai, Nile Campaign 1884-85, Boer War1899-1902, and Great War 1914-18, also spending 5 years in India. A very flavoursome narrative, demonstrated by its selection by Peter Ustinov for one of his last appearances on the BBC's "Book at Bedtime," a performance which caused quite a run of the title, which is uncommon enough at the best of times. A little-known treasure of the literature of colonialism, rarely found in the jacket.

Quantized Singularities in the Electromagnetic Field.

London, Harrison and Sons, 1931. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary full blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Proceedings of the Royal Society", Series A, Vol. 132 & 133, 1933. A very fine and clean copy. [Dirac in Vol 133:] Pp. 61-72. [Entire volume: V(1), 703-706, 701, (1), XIV, 695, IX pp.]. First printing of Dirac's seminal paper in which he predict anti-matter. "The prediction and subsequent discovery of the positron rank among the great triumphs of modern physics". (Pais, The Genius of Science). After Dirac in 1928 had published his famous relativistic wave equation for the electron, he spent the following years working on an interpretation of the negative energy solutions of the equation. In 1930 he published his hole-theory and tried to identify the holes with protons. But, as pointed out by several others, the theory required that these counter particles to the electron must have the same mass as the electron, and also would annihilate into pure energy upon colliding with the electron. In 1931 (in this article) Dirac bit the bullet and postulated: "A hole, if there is one, would be a new kind of particle, unknown to experimental physics ... We may call such a particle an anti-electron ... Theory at present is quite unable to suggest a reason why there should be any differences between electron and protons". Thus, Dirac had predicted the existance of both the positron and antiproton. "Dirac was one of the greatest theoretical physicists in the twentieth century. He is best known for his important and elegant contributions to the formulation of quantum mechanics; for his quantum theory of the emission and absorption of radiation, which inaugurated quantum electrodynamics; for his relativistic equation of the electron; for his "prediction" of the positron and of antimatter; and for his "large number hypothesis" in cosmology. Not only his results but also his methods influenced the way much of theoretical physics is done today, extending or improving the mathematical formalism before looking for its systematic interpretation." (DSB).In 1932 C. D. Anderson produced positrons in cloud chambers exposed to radiation. Antiprotons were observed in 1954 by E. G. Segrè and O. Chanberlain
