1931 - FAULKNER, William. These 13. New York: Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith, (1931). Octavo, original red and beige cloth, top edge silver, uncut. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $5500.Signed limited first edition of the first collection of Faulkner’s stories, one of only 299 copies signed by him, featuring the evocative “A Rose for Emily,” and “That Evening Sun”â€"“perhaps the most perfect story in the collection” (New York Times).Appearing two years after The Sound and the Fury, Faulkner’s These 13 was issued on September 13, 1931 while he was immersed in the novel Light in August. These 13 won early praise as a collection of stories that “are, for the most part, Faulkner novels in miniature,” with A Rose For Emily highlighted as “one of the strongest” tales, and That Evening Sun as “perhaps the most perfect story in the collection.” Faulkner is “the latest star in the American literary firmament… This collection of his short stories in unreservedly recommended” (New York Times). “It is highly likely that the limited issue precedes the trade issue because the page numbers in the limited issue are italicized and enclosed in brackets, while the brackets are removed and the type is Roman in three successive printings of the trade issue” (Petersen A9.1). Without rare original tissue dust jacket; as issued without slipcase. This copy unnumbered. Bruccoli & Clark I:122. Expert repair to front inner paper hinge. An about-fine copy.         Autograph Letter Signed

Two pages on octavo sheet stationary, "The Bell Inn, Malmesbury, Wilts." printed in type. "July 31, 1931. Dear Burdett [Osbert Burdett, author], It would have given me the greatest pleasure if you and dear Moray (for whom I have much affectionate regard) had lunched or dined with me- but Canon Gray [i.e. John Gray] and I are here for August. He never wearies of Malmesbury... He went today to Dorchester and Tuesday and I met him in Salisbury. I hope dear Brother is better. I also hope you will come again to Scotland and let me make your acquaintance. I have quite a large box filled with Courtenay's letters. I hope to see Mrs. Rivets and the children this month. One of the girls has been for 8 months under treatment for glandular trouble. I wish WCR were still with us. Did you read and like Saturday Night at the Greyhound? John Hampson ame and stayed a few days with me. Regretfully, Andre S. Raffalovich." The Courtenay referred to was John Edward Courtenay Bodley, a fellow undergraduate and friend of Wilde's at Balliol who later was to write maliciously on Wilde. A fascinating and thoroughly salutary letter.

I Am A Fugitive From A Georgia Chain Gang! - Original Six-Part Serial in True Detective Mysteries

Dunellen, NJ and New York: New Metropolitan Fiction, Inc. / MacFadden, 1931. The original six-part serialization (January-June, 1931) of what would become Robert E. Burns' novel I Am A Fugitive From A Georgia Chain Gang, published by the Vanguard Press in 1932. A slightly fictionalized but largely autobiographical account, written while in hiding, of the author's adventures with the Georgia penal system, beginning with his arrest for stealing $5.80 from an Atlanta grocer in 1922. By his own admission, the author sent his story to True Detective Mysteries through an indirect and secret channel while hiding out from the law. At a side-by-side comparison with the finished text of the novel, the serialized version shows textual variations in certain portions. The six issues notably include dozens of photographic illustrations throughout the text, prominently featuring Burns in civilian, military, and prison garb, photos of his family, facsimiles of numerous letters written on his behalf, and stark portrayals of prisoners on the chain gang. Burns's intent was to expose the brutality and corruption of the chain gang system, and he succeeded; the book created an instant furor upon publication and became a bestseller for Vanguard. It served as the basis for the Mervyn LeRoy film released later the same year, starring Paul Muni in the role of Burns. The film heralded a new genre - the prison drama - and won three Oscars including a Best Actor Award for Muni. While copies of the novel in dustjacket are notably scarce, the complete serial in its original state is nearly unobtainable. A primary source and rare, with nothing comparable available in the trade (2015) and OCLC showing 8 American institutions with any issues of this publication. Six quarto issues bound into one volume (29.5cm); illustrated wrappers; 120; 136; 128; 120; 120; 112pp; illus. Minute loss to base of spines, light wear to extremities, with several short tears and creases to same; faint, shallow moisture staining to rear wrapper edges and margins of several issues, else complete and clean throughout; Very Good+ or better.

Autograph Letter Signed, 2pp on one sheet of "Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute" stationery, 4to, Tuskegee, Jan. 28, 1931

      - Carver discusses his investigations into peanut diseases and specific experiments in growing healthy plants. He writes to Grady Porter, a researcher from a peanut processing plant in Columbus, Georgia. Carver thinks they will be able to produce, "the perfect form from the last bag of vines you brought. I have put them out in the open air where they can mature in a natural way. The perithecia are well developed." He notes that he found, "some imperfect ascispores, " but writes that, "within a few weeks I will find perfectly developed spores. I am trying to develop the hearts." He then suggests that a "bacterial disease" may be affecting growth. "These may be related to a disease on cotton stalks which I am going to investigate.I found three small pieces of cow pea vines in with the peanut vines you brought.the peanut and cow pea vine have the same trouble." Carver asks Porter to look for cow pea vines "with little pustules" like the ones on peanut vines. He ends the letter using the scientific names for the plants to explain what Grady should look for. He signs, "G. W. Carver." With holograph envelope of Tuskegee Institute. Carver had achieved widespread recognition by the time he wrote this letter. He was credited for developing peanut products and bringing back the peanut industry which had been devastated by disease from insect infestation at the end of the nineteenth century. Carver also promoted interracial cooperation.

        THE GLASS KEY.

London and New York: Alfred A. Knopf,. 1931. cloth.. Remnant of removed label on front paste-down, some dustiness and. spotting to edges, some mild edge rubbing, spine panel a bit faded, a. very good copy. (#132178). First edition. Correct first edition, first issue, of this novel, published January, 1931; the American edition was not published until April of 1931. The author's fourth novel, set in a city patterned after Baltimore, where he grew up. "Hammet's vision was one of the darkest in the history of crime fiction. He saw the world as an incomprehensible place in which no one can ever really know one another, and created the world of THE GLASS KEY to match. Whatever the ultimate verdict on its literary status, it's a compulsively readable, coolly sardonic portrait of an unredeemable nightworld and ambiguous relationships, and stands beside THE MALTESE FALCON as one of the earliest classics of noir crime fiction." - Pronzini and Muller, 1001 Midnights, p. 336. A Haycraft-Queen cornerstone. Filmed several times. Pronzini and Muller, 1001 Midnights, pp. 335-6. Layman A.4.1.a.
