-- Rotraut Hinderks-Kutscher ( geb. 14. Dezember 1908 in München; † 26.

        Die Technik der Antike und des Mittelalters * H A L B F R A N Z B A N D / H A L B L E D E R - H A N D E I N B A N D

Full Circle

London Number Five John Street Adelphi: Martin Secker , 1931 VG, 1st Eng ed, 1931. Uncommon. In purple cloth, gilt title, corners lightly bumped & worn. Spine, faded, gilt titles, edges bumped. Internally, half title, [4], 7-320 pp, lacks DJ, book slightly cocked, printed by The Botolph Printing Works, Gate Street, Kingsway, WC 2. A parody of William Somerset Maugham's Cakes & Ales first published in the US as Gin & Bitters under the pseudonym of A Riposte, she went on and had it published in the UK as Full Circle, however it was withdrawn shortly afterwards by her publisher as Mugham had taken legal action for libel against them. In addition to Mordaunt & Clowes she also wrote under the name of Mrs Wiehe, Mrs Bowley, Jack Heron & A Riposte. (Stutt F30. Alec Waugh - My Brother Evelyn & Other Profiles. Rogal - Maugham Encylopedia p 69). Written about the morally and spiritually empty life of a lionized Author!

        BERÃœHMTE ZEITGENOSSEN IN UNBEWACHTEN AUGENBLICKEN

Stuttgart: J. Engelhorns Nachf, 1931. First edition. Salomon, Erich. Small 4to., 46 pp., and 112 b&w photos on 104 pp., with texts in German, English, French and Spanish. Plain card wrappers with the printed dust jacket affixed to the spine. The lower tip is bumped, there are small chips missing at the edges and rubbing at the spine; on the front panel a 2-inch closed tear at the top near the spine and a short one at the bottom has been closed with archival tape on the blank reverse. The dust jacket is worn but largely intact and good. This seems to be a unique, prepublication copy, either a maquette or a copy for review. All other copies I have handled over the years have been in blue cloth, titled in gilt, issued with a separate dust jacket. I have consulted with both Martin Parr, the noted photographer, author and collector, and Manfred Heiting, noted author and collector, who concurrs, that neither have seen such a copy. Salomon, from a German-Jewish banking family, studied mechanical engineering and the law. In 1927, he took up the miniature camera and recorded the ruling class from his privileged seat among them. This work is a regarded as one of the most important books of the candid camera. The title, which translates as, "Famous Contemporaries in Unguarded Moments" includes photos of Hindeburg, Chamberlain, Lloyd George, William Randolph Hearst, Richard Strauss, and others. Parr and Badger, The Photobook, Volume 1, p. 131.

        The Waves

London: Hogarth Press, 1931 First edition, first printing. One of 7,113 copies. Publisher's purple cloth, lettered in gilt, printed on laid paper; in the original cream pictorial dust jacket designed by Vanessa Bell, decorated in green and lettered in purple. Near fine, with a hint of wear to the spine ends, some faint toning to the spine, else bright and clean; unclipped dust jacket, with some toning and faint rubbing to the spine, minor toning and a few hints of light soiling to the otherwise fresh panels. Overall, a tight and attractive copy. Kirkpatrick A16a. Woolmer 279. The Waves is Virginia Woolf's most experimental text, which pushes the boundaries of the novel both thematically and structurally. The plot focuses on the lives of six main characters, spanning from childhood to adulthood, and the text is comprised of the character's spoken soliloquies. Like much of Woolf's writing, The Waves is less plot-driven and more of a collection of captured moments; the beauty of The Waves lies in the eloquent descriptions of what Louis Kronenberger described as "the poetic symbols of life" in his 1931 review for The New York Times: "the changing seasons, day and night, bread and wine, fire and cold, time and space, birth and death and change." The Waves is arguably more poetry than novel, as Woolf used a variety of literary and poetic devices to blur the line between the two genres.. 1st Edition.. Hardcover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        Die Leiden des Jungen Werthers

Maastricht: Halcyon Press, 1931. Buckland Wright, John. Octavo. (256) pp + 20 plates. From an edition of 140, this is one of fourteen copies on pearl white Japanese vellum with an additional set of proofs on Dutch Pannekoek paper. All plates are signed by the illustrator, John Buckland Wright. This is the third book bearing Buckland Wright's illustrations, and it marks his first use of copper engravings for book illustrations. The style employed here is slightly atypical of Buckland Wright, who employs more bucolic elements without his customary eroticism. Reid notes that this book "is face scarcer than the printed limitation suggests" as "only a relatively few sets of the engravings were printed". Bound in full blue morocco by Louis Malcorps with cover decoration in gilt after a design by Buckland Wright. T.e.g. Housed in the publisher's marbled slipcase, which shows some light shelfwear.         SUSPICIOUS CHARACTERS.

New York: Brewer, Warren & Putnam, 1931., 1931. First edition. First U. S. edition. Originally published earlier in the U. K. in 1931 using the title, THE FIVE RED HERRINGS. Some minor darkening to orange cloth at spine, but all lettering remains clear, else a crisp, near fine copy in dust jacket, with light professional restoration to the extremities. A landscape painter was found dead half submerged in a stream. On the bank was his easel and stool and a half-finished picture in which the paint was still wet. He had been seen sitting at his easel painting at ten o'clock in the morning and again at eleven, and when the body was found, it was only two o'clock in the afternoon. But ... rigor mortis had set in to prove that he had been dead for ten or twelve hours. Lord Peter Wimsey is called, and while red herrings and blind alleys abound, he weeds out the false evidence and leads the police directly to the murderer.
