        The World Crisis 1911-1918

London: Thornton Butterworth, Ltd., 1931. First abridged and revised edition. Hardcover. This is a jacketed British first edition, first printing of the first Abridged & Revised edition of The World Crisis. Originally published in six volumes between 1923 and 1931, The World Crisis is Winston Churchill's epic history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. This important edition is not just an abridgement. It incorporates revisions by Churchill with new material, including a whole new chapter on the Battle of the Marne, as well as a new introduction. This British first abridged edition is quite scarce in the original dust jacket. It is also among the most striking first edition dust jackets in the Churchill canon. There were three printings ? in 1931, 1932, and 1937. All three printings featured the same dust jacket design, but second and third printings are typically encountered on tan paper with just a hint of pale green color while most first printing copies appear to have been printed on a notably brighter, vivid green paper. Unfortunately, the first printing dust jacket paper was exceptionally thin and also proved highly susceptible to fading. Thus nearly all surviving examples suffer losses and are completely faded to tan. Moreover, the volume itself was bound in a striking green that proved almost equally susceptible to toning of the spine to a brownish color, as well as dulling of the spine gilt. This jacketed first printing of the first Abridged & Revised edition is flawed, but nonetheless a scarce survivor. Condition is good plus in a good minus dust jacket. The green cloth binding remains square and tight and shows only minor wear to extremities. The spine is lightly sunned, consonant with the sunning to the jacket spine, but nonetheless remains notably brighter than is typical of unjacketed copies. The contents remain respectably bright and clean with no previous ownership marks. A hint of soiling is confined to the lightly dust soiled top edge. The dust jacket is unequivocally a first printing example, retaining the distinctive vivid green color on the faces and flaps, with the spine sunned to tan. The jacket is substantially complete, with edge wear and chipping to a maximum depth of .5 inch at the spine head and a 1.5 inch closed tear and some associated wrinkling at the front hinge center. The chief flaw of this dust jacket is also what probably ensured its survival ? lamination that was imperfectly applied, with the top and bottom edges of the dust jacket protruding slightly past the laminate coating. We have now further protected the jacket by placing it beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A69.6.a, Woods/ICS A31(bb.1), Langworth p.113

        The Great Mouthpiece.

New York: Covici Friede,, 1931. A Life Story of William J. Fallon. Octavo. Original blue cloth lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Some tears to dust jacket with some loss, small pale splash mark at foot of front panel. A very good copy in the scarce dust jacket. First edition, first printing. An inscribed presentation copy from the author to his daughter, inscribed on recto of front free endpaper: "To my sweet darling,/ Jane, from her/ ever-doting parent,/ Gene Fowler/ 1931". An uncharacteristically benign inscription: Fowler's animus towards children was legendary. William J. Fallon (1886-1927) was one of the most flamboyant characters of 1930s Manhattan, described in Great American Lawyers: an Encyclopaedia, as "one of the three greatest criminal attorneys in the first half of the twentieth century" .

Dunellen and New York: New Metropolitan Fiction, Inc. 1931., 1931. First edition. First edition. Six quarto issues bound into one volume (29.5cm); illustrated wrappers; 120; 136; 128; 120; 120; 112 pp., illustrated. Minute loss to base of spines, light wear to extremities, with several short tears and creases to same; faint, shallow moisture staining to rear wrapper edges and margins of several issues, else complete and clean throughout. Overall very Good+ or better. The original six-part serialization (January-June, 1931) of what would become Robert E. Burns's novel I Am A Fugitive From A Georgia Chain Gang, published by the Vanguard Press in 1932. A slightly fictionalized but largely autobiographical account, written while in hiding, of the author's adventures with the Georgia penal system, beginning with his arrest for stealing $5.80 from an Atlanta grocer in 1922. By his own admission, the author sent his story to True Detective Mysteries through an indirect and secret channel while hiding out from the law. At a side-by-side comparison with the finished text of the novel, the serialized version shows textual variations in certain portions. The six issues notably include dozens of photographic illustrations throughout the text, prominently featuring Burns in civilian, military, and prison garb, photographs of his family, facsimiles of numerous letters written on his behalf, and stark portrayals of prisoners on the chain gang. Burns's intent was to expose the brutality and corruption of the chain gang system, and he succeeded; as the book created an instant furor upon publication and became a bestseller for Vanguard. It served as the basis for the Mervyn LeRoy film released later the same year, starring Paul Muni in the role of Burns. The film heralded a new genre - the prison drama - and won three Oscars including a Best Actor Award for Muni. While copies of the novel in dustjacket are notably scarce, the complete serial in its original state is nearly unobtainable. A primary source and rare, with nothing comparable available in the trade (2016) and OCLC showing 8 American institutions with any issues of this publication. All issues housed in a clamshell case with titles stamped on the front cover and spine.

The Adventures of Detectives Black and Blue (Scripts)

Earnshaw-Young Radio Department 1931 - The First 20 Scripts of One of the First-Broadcast Detective Series, 1931 Binding: stiff paper boards. Size & Pages: 1st edition. 11 x 8 inches. 207 leaves (printed on one side only). Covers the period 5 January 1931 to 30 January 1931, the first 20 episodes of the serial. (These were 15-minute radio-plays, beginning 5 January 1931 and ending 30 January, broadcast every weekday at 5:30 pm.) This is the one of the world's first broadcast detective series (from WKHJ, Los Angeles): Detectives Black and Blue; published in Los Angeles, by the in 1931. (The radio series featuring Sax Romer's Fu Manchu aired in 1927--this is probably the very first detective series, though the central character in it all is the hyperbolic template for evil-genius criminality.) **These seem to be in-house sheets--they are very similar-looking to mimeographed sheets, printed in light-purple ink. The text is printed on a template “Radio Department, Earnshaw-Young, Inc. Advertising” stationery, on every page, with standard information for sponsor/.station/day/time/date in the banner of every sheet. (The word "Continuity" is also printed across the top of every sheet in 30-point type). **Provenance: the scripts were received March 19, 1931 by the Copyright Office and transferred to the the Library of Congress collections January 18, 1932; they were released/exchanged by the Library of Congress to this store in 1998. Rare. **"From the website Scoop: “Ever wonder where the buddy-cop-comedy genre came from? It didn't begin with shows like Car 54, Where Are You? It dates all the way back to 1932, when Los Angeles radio station KHJ first aired Adventures of Detectives Black and Blue." “The syndicated show followed the exploits of Jim Black and his partner, Frank Blue. Black and Blue began as shipping clerks from Duluth with daydreams of bringing down bad guys. Of course, neither had any law enforcement knowledge. But all that was remedied when they decided to take a correspondence course to earn their "Detectives degree." As you may imagine, hilarity ensued. Even with their official degrees, bor sleuths these two weren't. The radio schtick focused on their bumbling and botching, but each episode ended happily, as they captured criminals in comical capers.” “The show lasted for two years, thanks to sponsors Iodent toothpaste and Folger's coffee. Each sponsor released brass Detectives Black and Blue badges in the show's inaugural year. Iodent also released a fabric double-billed detective's cap (checkered and printed with Iodent and the radio show title on the front bill).”--(From the website "Scoop")**Conservative condition grade: a sold, and retrospective, VERY GOOD+ (say, a conservative 7 on a 1-10 scale (ten being "mint")). There is a small amount of cover dust and grime, but generally the pamphlet is in very fresh and clean condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Large folio, 23” x 17.5”, original silver gelatin print, original ""Duralumin"" frame; entire piece measures 26” x 20”. A few small smudges and discolorations to print, particularly along lower edge, just touching signature but not affecting overall appearance of image; original frame fine. A handsome piece.Called ""one of the world's great artists"" by Alfred Stieglitz, Margaret Bourke-White ""epitomized the dynamic spirit of her age… covering the most important events of the mid-century"" (McDarrah, 52). A photographer at Fortune and Time, Bourke-White was ""one of the first photojournalists who told a news story in pictures and also wrote the text"" (New York Times), and as a Life staff photographer, she became ""of the most successful women in America"" (Parr & Badger I:140). During the early years of the Depression, Goodyear was one of Bourke-White's most important clients. She made this image of the airship Akron when it was removed from its hangar for the first time. The Akron was a helium-filled airship of the U.S. Navy which operated between September 1931 and April 1933. She was the world's first flying aircraft carrier, carrying F9C Sparrowhawk fighter planes which could be launched from and recovered by the airship while in flight. The Akron still holds the world record for largest helium-filled airship (the slightly larger Hindenburg and Graf Zeppelin II were filled with hydrogen). The April 4, 1933 crash of the Akron into the sea during heavy weather, which resulted in the loss of 73 crew and passengers (only three men survived)—the largest loss of life in any airship crash—spelled the end of the rigid airship program in the U.S. Navy, especially since one of the leading proponents of the airship program, Rear Admiral William Moffett, was aboard and died in the accident. The engraved inscription on the original frame reads: ""Winner/ C. Poley/ Third Annual Goodyear Dealers Zeppelin Race July-August 1931. This frame is made of Duralumin used in girder construction of the United States Airship 'Akron' built by the Goodyear Zeppelin Corporation."" Duralumin was the trade name of a very lightweight aluminum-copper alloy."

        Ernst Barlach.

Copertina originale conservata. Esemplare magnifico, a pieni margini.

Autograph letter signed "Po Mascagni" to the famed Italian composer Ottorino Respighi

La fiamma (1931-3), Respighi's "last and most frequently performed large-scale opera," was first performed at the Opera in Rome on January 23, 1934. John C.G. Waterhouse, et al. in Grove Music Online. Mascagni, distinguished as both a composer and conductor, is perhaps best-known for his opera Cavalleria rusticana, which "was enormously successful from its first performance at the Costanzi in Rome in 1890. From then on Mascagni spent the rest of his long career treating a wide variety of subjects. His next opera, L'amico Fritz (1891), consolidated his success with Roman audiences, and revealed his lyrical vein. This fluent rustic comedy was successful particularly because melodic vitality - the outstanding merit of Cavalleria - was combined with a more elegant harmonic idiom." Michele Girardi in Grove Music Online.. 1 page (ca. 106 x 136 mm.). Dated Rome, December 25, 1934. In black ink on a notecard with the emblem and name of the Reale Accademia d'Italia embossed in blue to upper left corner. In Italian (with translation). With original autograph envelope, ca. 112 x 143 mm., addressed "a Sua Eccelenza Maestro Ottorino Respighi Teatro Reale dell' Opera - Roma" with the name and emblem of the Accademia embossed to verso. "I am sorry for not having attended the performance of Fiamma. I offer my sincere congratulations on the success that has crowned [your] noble endeavor... " Edges very lightly browned; minor remnants of adhesive to corners of blank verso; envelope slighlty worn. Together with a vintage bust-length photograph of a youngish Mascagni in profile. Ca. 206 x 127 mm. Slightly worn; minor remnants of adhesive to blank verso.
