        The Waves

London: Hogarth Press, 1931 First edition, first printing. One of 7,113 copies. Publisher's purple cloth, lettered in gilt, printed on laid paper; in the original cream pictorial dust jacket designed by Vanessa Bell, decorated in green and lettered in purple. Near fine, with a hint of wear to the spine ends, some faint toning to the spine, else bright and clean; unclipped dust jacket, with some toning and faint rubbing to the spine, minor toning and a few hints of light soiling to the otherwise fresh panels. Overall, a tight and attractive copy. Kirkpatrick A16a. Woolmer 279. The Waves is Virginia Woolf's most experimental text, which pushes the boundaries of the novel both thematically and structurally. The plot focuses on the lives of six main characters, spanning from childhood to adulthood, and the text is comprised of the character's spoken soliloquies. Like much of Woolf's writing, The Waves is less plot-driven and more of a collection of captured moments; the beauty of The Waves lies in the eloquent descriptions of what Louis Kronenberger described as "the poetic symbols of life" in his 1931 review for The New York Times: "the changing seasons, day and night, bread and wine, fire and cold, time and space, birth and death and change." The Waves is arguably more poetry than novel, as Woolf used a variety of literary and poetic devices to blur the line between the two genres.. 1st Edition.. Hardcover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        Die Leiden des Jungen Werthers

Maastricht: Halcyon Press, 1931. Buckland Wright, John. Octavo. (256) pp + 20 plates. From an edition of 140, this is one of fourteen copies on pearl white Japanese vellum with an additional set of proofs on Dutch Pannekoek paper. All plates are signed by the illustrator, John Buckland Wright. This is the third book bearing Buckland Wright's illustrations, and it marks his first use of copper engravings for book illustrations. The style employed here is slightly atypical of Buckland Wright, who employs more bucolic elements without his customary eroticism. Reid notes that this book "is face scarcer than the printed limitation suggests" as "only a relatively few sets of the engravings were printed". Bound in full blue morocco by Louis Malcorps with cover decoration in gilt after a design by Buckland Wright. T.e.g. Housed in the publisher's marbled slipcase, which shows some light shelfwear. (Reid A3).

        SUSPICIOUS CHARACTERS.

New York: Brewer, Warren & Putnam, 1931., 1931. First edition. First U. S. edition. Originally published earlier in the U. K. in 1931 using the title, THE FIVE RED HERRINGS. Some minor darkening to orange cloth at spine, but all lettering remains clear, else a crisp, near fine copy in dust jacket, with light professional restoration to the extremities. A landscape painter was found dead half submerged in a stream. On the bank was his easel and stool and a half-finished picture in which the paint was still wet. He had been seen sitting at his easel painting at ten o'clock in the morning and again at eleven, and when the body was found, it was only two o'clock in the afternoon. But ... rigor mortis had set in to prove that he had been dead for ten or twelve hours. Lord Peter Wimsey is called, and while red herrings and blind alleys abound, he weeds out the false evidence and leads the police directly to the murderer.

        Pattern Books Two volumes

1931. 1931 and 1938-1939.1931 and 1938-1939Two pottery design pattern books containing original water colours of designs used by Staffordshire potteries including Royal Crown Derby designs, Avon Ware etc. These two volumes reveal a typical pattern for mid-range ware, hand painting and gilding applied over transfer print outlines in some cases. Each item has an allocated number. Book One 1931 number 4436-5426 with details of glazes and images given for each piece. Book Two similarly is numbered 6563-7544. The pottery is not identified but may have been in Hanley. In the first book emphasis is on art deco designs whilst the second book is more wide ranging including classic "Cottage Gate" and "Willow Bridge" designs. Together they indicate how over almost a decade there was a dilution of art deco style towards more populist forms. The books are cloth bound, frayed at all edges and the spine of volume one is called for. Marbled end papers, stiff card pages. 4to. These books appear to have come from one of the lesser known potteries but the images reveal the wide range of clients served including the hotel market as well as retail clients. The images are all hand drawn. Their purpose was for use by the china painters, gilders, travellers and agents. It also meant that a matching item could be re-ordered if required.

        India. Speeches and an Introduction.

London: Thornton Butterworth, Ltd,, 1931. Octavo. Original orange wrappers, spine and covers printed in black. Housed in a red half morocco slipcase by Maltby's of Oxford. Tiny puncture to top left-hand side of front wrapper and first 5 leaves, slight spotting to edges of text block but overall a remarkably bright copy. Excellent. First edition, first impression, wrappered issue (the book was issued simultaneously in hardback). The 1930s are characterized as Churchill's wilderness years, with his unrelenting opposition to Hitler being seen as main cause for his ostracism. However "another, and earlier reason lay in his bitter opposition to Baldwin's India policy Â… Churchill had always hit hard; not for him a round of gentlemanly sparring between friends. His fight to maintain full control of India employed not just the clenched fist but the bludgeon" (Woods, Artillery of Words).
