lettre autographe d'Octave Uzanne à Georges Maurevert

Octave Uzanne

        Cantique des Cantiques de Salomon.

Tall slim 8vo. [Paris: Editions de Cluny, 1931]. Tall slim 8vo, 32, (1, colophon) pp. With 10 wood-engravings and several initial letters by Eric Gill. Text printed in red and black. Original de luxe binding of full red morocco signed by O. Dorfner. Very slight spotting to upper cover, otherwise as issued. Edition limited to 100 copies in French, printed in the type Antiqua designed by Gill and cut by Prince; this book is one of the outstanding works of the Press and one of Gill’s masterpieces. Versions in Latin and German were also printed. Copies of this version are very scarce -- the last one at auction was in 1993, in the trade binding ($1100) and the Schimmel copy on vellum sold in 2000. Brinks 93: noting this edition but not in this binding, which appears to be unrecorded on paper copies. Sophie Schneideman noted of her copy: “Kessler seems to have got the very best out of Gill, with a darker mood and deeper intensity in his engravings than was usual for the artist. Some of this is achieved by the style of printing but much must have been due to Kessler's tight control of the production and strong influence over Gill's work for it. The partnership produced a truly remarkable work of art.”

Boards a bit tanned and lightly handsoiled, internally fine, with the print equally fine. An original drypoint etching on Fabriano by the prominent Canadian artist, specially commissioned to be bound into this number of THE COLOPHON, in an edition of 3000 unnumbered copies (and perhaps 100 extras), all hand printed by Milne on his press in Palgrave, Ontario, and individually signed in pencil by him in the lower margin. The World Crisis: The Eastern Front

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1931. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a superior copy of the sixth and final book of Churchill's acclaimed history of the First World War, essential to filling a full set of British first editions. Scarcity owes to the fact that the first printing was just 5150 copies, as opposed to 7500 for the British first edition of each of the preceding five books. Consequently these are rarely offered outside of sets. In proposing the book to his publisher, Churchill wrote: "In the previous volumes of the World Crisis I have described only in a few pages the course of events in the Eastern theatre. They have merely been the background of our main drama of the war. But now I think I might write a volume called 'The Eastern Front', which would be separate from but supplementary to our five volume history." Here is the first British edition, first printing, a near fine copy, suitable for anchoring a premium first edition set. The blue cloth binding is notably square and tight with nicely rounded spine, sharp corners, and only trivial wear to extremities. Spine presentation is excellent, the blue undulled and the gilt vivid. The contents retain a crisp feel and the all illustrations and maps are present. The folding maps at p. 98, 142, 156, 250, 256, 308, 324, 338, 346, and 368 are all properly folded; as is common, the p.368 map has a short tear at the blank margin where it attaches to the text block. We find no previous ownership marks. Spotting modest for the edition, primarily confined to the prelims through the final page of the Preface and the page edges. Bushy Island, AK, 1931. All housed in a small commercial 'Snapshot' ablum. Album well worn, with a some mounting leaves detached. Clippings yellowed, but quite readable. Photographs generally clear & sharp. Overall, a Good album with VG contents.. 22 leaves of black 'mounting stock' paper. 38 b/w silver gelatin photographs [most captioned, ~ 2-3/4" x 4-5/8"], 19 clippings related to the company, as well as the Blue Fox industry & 5 half-tone images of foxes, et al. Album: 4-5/8" x 5-5/8" This interesting documentary & promotional photo album which provides an invaluable historical look at a very successful fox farming venture on Bushy Island, in the Southeast Alaska Islands. Following World War I, there was a quick rise in fur prices offering an entrepreneurial opportunity seized by Charles Kletsch, Clarence C. Brown, and others who organized the Alaska Blue Fox Company in July 1922 and leased Bushy Island in the Tongass National Forest off the coast of Alaska, stocking the island with 20 breeding pairs of foxes. At the time, fox farming operations were encouraged by the U.S. Government on Alaska Islands because the animals could run free, and they were believed to produce better pelts than cage-raised animals. The Blue Fox was especially popular in Alaska as they adapted well to the secluded islands, thrived on the cheap castoff foods of salmon & fish scraps from local Alaskan canneries, though also preying on wild birds and their eggs. The Forest Service leased the islands for as little as $ 25.00 a year, and pelts could be sold for up to $ 450.00 apiece during the 1920s. Kletsch was a successful Cowlitz County, Washington dairy farmer who sold a large 500 acre tract to the Long-Bell Lumber Company in 1921 for close to $100,000 which was then developed for the Paper Mills and Company Town of Longview, WA (centered on present day site of Lake Sacajawea). Later, after selling the land, he operated the Alaska Blue Fox Co., and speculated on real estate before losing all his money in the Great Depression. Clarence C. Brown (b. 1868) was a real estate speculator, consulting engineer, and salesman based in Vancouver, Washington, who collaborated with Kletsch in a number of businesses before also suffering a Great Depression bankruptcy. The clippings and photos detail how Bushy Island was reached by boat from Wrangell Island, the construction of a large house, store house, and sheds for supplies and pelts. Photos show the house which had running water, a hot water tank, a view of the Company Bay, the foxes running around on the island, the company’s boat The Kermath, and photos of the farmers holding bundles of pelts, as well as pelts hanging outside the sheds. The Company flourished until the Great Depression, when the prices of furs plummeted, and destroyed the very lucrative, albeit fledgling industry. A nice primary source for this one-time thriving PNW business.

        Snow Crystals. (FIRST EDITION.)

New York: McGraw-Hill, 1931. - FIRST EDITION (stated on title page). ix, 227 pp; plates (containing approx. 2,500 photomicrographs). Original cloth, gilt snowflake on front cover, folio (32 x 25 cm). Ex-library: embossed stamp on title page. Label on spine, clear taped over. Bookplate on front pastedown, pouch on rear pastedown. Else Very Good. 'Wilson Alwyn 'Snowflake' Bentley (February 9, 1865 – December 23, 1931), born in Jericho, Vermont, United States is one of the first known photographers of snowflakes. He perfected a process of catching flakes on black velvet in such a way that their images could be captured before they either melted or sublimed. . . . He first became interested in snow crystals as a teenager on his family farm. He tried to draw what he saw through an old microscope given to him by his mother when he was fifteen. The snowflakes were too complex to record before they melted, so he attached a bellows camera to a compound microscope and, after much experimentation, photographed his first snowflake on January 15, 1885. He would capture over 5,000 images of crystals in his lifetime. Each crystal was caught on a blackboard and transferred rapidly to a microscope slide. Even at subzero temperatures, snowflakes are ephemeral because they sublime. Bentley poetically described snowflakes as 'tiny miracles of beauty' and snow crystals as 'ice flowers.' Despite these poetic descriptions, Bentley brought a highly objective eye to his work, similar to the German photographer Karl Blossfeldt (1865–1932) who photographed seeds, seed pods, and foliage. Bentley's work gained attention in the last few years of the nineteenth century. Harvard Mineralogical Museum acquired some of his photomicrographs. In collaboration with George Henry Perkins, professor of natural history at the University of Vermont, Bentley published an article in which he argued that no two snowflakes were alike. This concept caught the public imagination and he published other articles in magazines, including National Geographic, Nature, Popular Science, and Scientific American. His photographs have been requested by academic institutions worldwide. In 1931 Bentley worked with William J. Humphreys of the U.S. Weather Bureau to publish Snow Crystals, a monograph illustrated with 2,500 photographs' (Wikipedia).
