Autograph quotation signed ("King Faisal"). In Arabic.

No place, 4. IV. 1931. - Folio. 1 page. On uncut wove paper, bearing the Schoellers-Parole blind embossed seal, margins uncut. The original autograph contribution of one the leading figures of modern Arabian history and early Pan-Arabism to the Committee of the World League for Peace (Ligue Mondiale pour la Paix), a remarkable organization formed in 1925 with close ties to the League of Nations. The Committee itself was composed of such notaries as Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, King Carol II of Romania, John D Rockefeller, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein, who personally gathered the present manuscripts over the course of seven years (1925-32). Among the public figures who contributed to the project were dignitaries from the newly-created League of Nations' member states, precursor to the United Nations. In 1917 together with his father, Sharif of Mecca Hussein bin Ali, and British Colonel T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), Faisal organized the Arab Revolt in which several Arab regions gained their independence from the Ottoman Empire. During World War I, he helped Lawrence and General Allenby in capturing Jerusalem and Damascus. After the war Faisal became the leader of the Arab delegation at the Paris Peace Conference and lobbied for the creation of Arab Emirates from the former Ottoman ruled areas. During 1920, he ruled Syria and the following year was made King of the British Mandate of Iraq, a position he held until his death. - Autographs of King Faisal, member of the Hashemite dynasty, a descendant of the tribe of Muhammad, are of the umtost rarity; his 100-page notebook kept during the Paris Peace conference commanded GBP 110,000 in 1983 (Sotheby's, Mar 28, 1983, lot 77). Only two small typewritten letters with signatures have appeared on the market since; the present item is the first example of a document written entirely in Faisal's own hand. "Nations, especially the big ones, must forget their animosity and selfishness and strive to achieve one goal - World Peace; otherwise, humanity is doomed to destruction!" (translated from the Arabic). - A few minor pencil notations in the margins, but overall clean and in fine condition. Pax Mundi. Geneve, Societe paxunis, 1932. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

"These 13" was published during Faulkner's most productive and important period (1928-32), for his short story career. Of the thirteen stories in this collection, "Victory," "Ad Astra," "All the Dead Pilots," "Crevasse," "A Justice," "Mistral," "Divorce in Naples," and "Carcassonne" are published here for the first time.

New Metropolitan Fiction, Inc. 1931., Dunellen and New York - First edition. Six quarto issues bound into one volume (29.5cm); illustrated wrappers; 120; 136; 128; 120; 120; 112 pp., illustrated. Minute loss to base of spines, light wear to extremities, with several short tears and creases to same; faint, shallow moisture staining to rear wrapper edges and margins of several issues, else complete and clean throughout. Overall very Good+ or better. The original six-part serialization (January-June, 1931) of what would become Robert E. Burns's novel I Am A Fugitive From A Georgia Chain Gang, published by the Vanguard Press in 1932. A slightly fictionalized but largely autobiographical account, written while in hiding, of the author's adventures with the Georgia penal system, beginning with his arrest for stealing $5.80 from an Atlanta grocer in 1922. By his own admission, the author sent his story to True Detective Mysteries through an indirect and secret channel while hiding out from the law. At a side-by-side comparison with the finished text of the novel, the serialized version shows textual variations in certain portions. The six issues notably include dozens of photographic illustrations throughout the text, prominently featuring Burns in civilian, military, and prison garb, photographs of his family, facsimiles of numerous letters written on his behalf, and stark portrayals of prisoners on the chain gang. Burns's intent was to expose the brutality and corruption of the chain gang system, and he succeeded; as the book created an instant furor upon publication and became a bestseller for Vanguard. It served as the basis for the Mervyn LeRoy film released later the same year, starring Paul Muni in the role of Burns. The film heralded a new genre - the prison drama - and won three Oscars including a Best Actor Award for Muni. While copies of the novel in dustjacket are notably scarce, the complete serial in its original state is nearly unobtainable. A primary source and rare, with nothing comparable available in the trade (2016) and OCLC showing 8 American institutions with any issues of this publication. All issues housed in a clamshell case with titles stamped on the front cover and spine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Stuttgart: J. Engelhorns Nachf, 1931. First edition. Salomon, Erich. Small 4to., 46 pp., and 112 b&w photos on 104 pp., with texts in German, English, French and Spanish. Plain card wrappers with the printed dust jacket affixed to the spine. The lower tip is bumped, there are small chips missing at the edges and rubbing at the spine; on the front panel a 2-inch closed tear at the top near the spine and a short one at the bottom has been closed with archival tape on the blank reverse. The dust jacket is worn but largely intact and good. This seems to be a unique, prepublication copy, either a maquette or a copy for review. All other copies I have handled over the years have been in blue cloth, titled in gilt, issued with a separate dust jacket. I have consulted with both Martin Parr, the noted photographer, author and collector, and Manfred Heiting, noted author and collector, who concurrs, that neither have seen such a copy. Salomon, from a German-Jewish banking family, studied mechanical engineering and the law. In 1927, he took up the miniature camera and recorded the ruling class from his privileged seat among them. This work is a regarded as one of the most important books of the candid camera. The title, which translates as, "Famous Contemporaries in Unguarded Moments" includes photos of Hindeburg, Chamberlain, Lloyd George, William Randolph Hearst, Richard Strauss, and others.         The Waves

London: Hogarth Press, 1931 First edition, first printing. One of 7,113 copies. Publisher's purple cloth, lettered in gilt, printed on laid paper; in the original cream pictorial dust jacket designed by Vanessa Bell, decorated in green and lettered in purple. Near fine, with a hint of wear to the spine ends, some faint toning to the spine, else bright and clean; unclipped dust jacket, with some toning and faint rubbing to the spine, minor toning and a few hints of light soiling to the otherwise fresh panels. Overall, a tight and attractive copy. Kirkpatrick A16a. Woolmer 279. The Waves is Virginia Woolf's most experimental text, which pushes the boundaries of the novel both thematically and structurally. The plot focuses on the lives of six main characters, spanning from childhood to adulthood, and the text is comprised of the character's spoken soliloquies. Like much of Woolf's writing, The Waves is less plot-driven and more of a collection of captured moments; the beauty of The Waves lies in the eloquent descriptions of what Louis Kronenberger described as "the poetic symbols of life" in his 1931 review for The New York Times: "the changing seasons, day and night, bread and wine, fire and cold, time and space, birth and death and change." The Waves is arguably more poetry than novel, as Woolf used a variety of literary and poetic devices to blur the line between the two genres.. 1st Edition.. Hardcover.         Die Leiden des Jungen Werthers

Maastricht: Halcyon Press, 1931. Buckland Wright, John. Octavo. (256) pp + 20 plates. From an edition of 140, this is one of fourteen copies on pearl white Japanese vellum with an additional set of proofs on Dutch Pannekoek paper. All plates are signed by the illustrator, John Buckland Wright. This is the third book bearing Buckland Wright's illustrations, and it marks his first use of copper engravings for book illustrations. The style employed here is slightly atypical of Buckland Wright, who employs more bucolic elements without his customary eroticism. Reid notes that this book "is face scarcer than the printed limitation suggests" as "only a relatively few sets of the engravings were printed". Bound in full blue morocco by Louis Malcorps with cover decoration in gilt after a design by Buckland Wright. T.e.g. Housed in the publisher's marbled slipcase, which shows some light shelfwear. (Reid A3).
