Etwas braunfleckig.

EDITION ORIGINALE LIVRE DEDICACE

Autograph quotation signed ("King Faisal"). In Arabic. No place, 4. IV. 1931.

1931. Folio. 1 page. On uncut wove paper, bearing the Schoellers-Parole blind embossed seal, margins uncut. The original autograph contribution of one the leading figures of modern Arabian history and early Pan-Arabism to the Committee of the World League for Peace (Ligue Mondiale pour la Paix), a remarkable organization formed in 1925 with close ties to the League of Nations. The Committee itself was composed of such notaries as Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, King Carol II of Romania, John D Rockefeller, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein, who personally gathered the present manuscripts over the course of seven years (1925-32). Among the public figures who contributed to the project were dignitaries from the newly-created League of Nations' member states, precursor to the United Nations. In 1917 together with his father, Sharif of Mecca Hussein bin Ali, and British Colonel T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), Faisal organized the Arab Revolt in which several Arab regions gained their independence from the Ottoman Empire. During World War I, he helped Lawrence and General Allenby in capturing Jerusalem and Damascus. After the war Faisal became the leader of the Arab delegation at the Paris Peace Conference and lobbied for the creation of Arab Emirates from the former Ottoman ruled areas. During 1920, he ruled Syria and the following year was made King of the British Mandate of Iraq, a position he held until his death. - Autographs of King Faisal, member of the Hashemite dynasty, a descendant of the tribe of Muhammad, are of the umtost rarity; his 100-page notebook kept during the Paris Peace conference commanded GBP 110,000 in 1983 (Sotheby's, Mar 28, 1983, lot 77). Only two small typewritten letters with signatures have appeared on the market since; the present item is the first example of a document written entirely in Faisal's own hand. "Nations, especially the big ones, must forget their animosity and selfishness and strive to achieve one goal - World Peace; otherwise, humanity is doomed to destruction!" (translated from the Arabic). - A few minor pencil notations in the margins, but overall clean and in fine condition. Pax Mundi.

Un volume in quarto 29 x 24 cm.

FATHERS OF AMERICAN SPORT". The ORIGINAL SIX WATERCOLORS of this famous Derrydale Press set, signed by the artist "R.L. Boyer". Together with a set of PROOFS BEFORE LETTERS, with what is evidently the artist's modelling and coloring, each signed by him in pencil (one, unsigned, is in print state, with legend engraved in lower margin)

The Derrydale Press, New York 1931 - From an edition of 250 signed sets. Ordeman notes that "it is rare that one finds a complete set today". 1 vols. Image size of the prints is approximately 10 x 8 inches, the plate measuring 13 x 9-1/2 inches, with additional margins. Each plate is archivally matted; the paintings measure 12 x 9-12 inches, and are docketed and captioned in pencil in the lower margins. Boyer's Originals. An extremely handsome and decorative set of American sporting notables. The six portraits, each set in an appropriate background, are of: SAMUEL MORRIS, ESQ., Foxhunter, first president of the Gloucester Foxhunting Club, America's oldest; COL. WILLIAM RANSOM JOHNSON, "Napoleon of the Turf"; COL. GEORGE WASHINGTON, Foxhunter; COMMODORE JOHN COX STEVENS, Yachtsman, owner of the "America" and a founder of the New York Yacht Club; THADDEUS NORRIS, ESQ., Angler, author of The American Angler's Book, who did much to elevate and advance the art of fly fishing; HENRY WILLIAM HERBERT, ESQ., "Frank Forester", the father of American sporting literature. Boyer's watercolors, done in larger size, were reduced to edition dimensions of approximately 10 x 8 inches. The proof prints before letters have been reworked by Boyer, who has signed each one, and show a depth and richness of modelling that the published edition, for all its beauty, does not. This set was one of the finest productions of The Derrydale Press Sporting Print Series. We believe the set of proofs to be unique, and the original paintings are, of course, unquestionably so. Both have survived in prime condition, to delight the collector and historian of the American sporting scene. A UNIQUE TREASURE OF AMERICAN SPORTING ART. Ordeman, The Aquatints, Drypoints and Etchings of The Derrydale Press, p. 24-5, et seq The watercolors are handsomely and uniformly matted in fine French mats; the proofs in a more simple uniform matting; a few of the watercolors show faint foxing, but both sets are clean, bright, and highly attractive. Custom half morocco slipcase and cloth chemise 1 vols. Image size of the prints is approximately 10 x 8 inches, the plate measuring 13 x 9-1/2 inches, with additional margins. Each plate is archivally matted; the paintings measure 12 x 9-12 inches, and are docketed and captioned in pencil in the lower margins From an edition of 250 signed sets. Written in French and English, perhaps accompanied insulin for use and directions for the administering physician. Expected folds, 6"" x 10"" when opened and laid flat A wonderful archive of pieces revolving around the research and achievements of Frederick Banting, who received the Nobel Prize in 1923 at age 32, for the discovery of insulin. Today he still attains the status of the youngest Nobel laureate in the area of Physiology. Later in his career he was knighted and judged the most famous Canadian of his time. It is of additional interest that Banting's Nobel prize was received by him with controversy, as the Nobel Committee decided to award Banting and Macleod the Nobel Prize instead of Banting and his research partner Best. This decision of the Nobel Committee made Banting furious. He felt that the prize should have been shared between him and Best, and not between him and Macleod who was the Professor at the University of Toronto. To give credit to Best, Banting decided to share his cash award with him. Macleod, in turn, shared his cash award with Collip. Banting's Nobel Prize for insulin has been much debated. However, Macleod played a central role in the discovery of insulin, by providing the research scientists with the laboratory, equipment and funding to continue their research. It was also he who supported the project from the beginning, and it is also most likely that Macleod's contacts in the scientific world helped the team in getting a speedy recognition of their discovery."

The World Crisis (first abridged and revised edition)

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1931. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the first abridged and revised edition of Churchill's monumental and acclaimed history of the First World War in the original first printing dust jacket - one of the most striking and rare dust jackets in the Churchill canon. Churchill's history - which he titled The World Crisis - was originally published in six volumes between 1923 and 1931. Of The World Crisis, Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the front. He served as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915. After the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but the work far exceeds this purpose. This important edition covering the war years 1911-1918 is not just an abridgement. It incorporates revisions by Churchill with new material, including a whole new chapter on the Battle of the Marne, as well as a new introduction. Moreover, the U.S. edition preceded the British, making it the true first edition. The front face of the yellow-tan dust jacket features a full-length, half-tone photograph of Churchill striding, in top hat with walking stick in hand. The rear cover features a smaller head and shoulders image of Churchill in the uniform of the South African Light Horse (set amid an advertisement for A Roving Commission). Writing in 1997, Churchill expert Richard Langworth said of this dust jacket "I know of only two or three of these in existence." We know of a few more than that, but certainly only a small number survive and very few collectors are able to own them. This copy is near fine in a very good dust jacket. The dust jacket remains notably bright and unclipped, with the originally ?$5.00? front flap price intact and the hallmark front image of Churchill striding clean and complete. Shallow loss is confined to the spine ends, corners, and top edge of the front face, all negligible except for a roughly .5 x .5 inch loss at the upper rear hinge. The spine is just slightly toned. We note some light staining and a nearly invisible one inch horizontal closed tear beside the author?s name on the spine extending slightly into the front face. The dust jacket is protected with a removable, archival quality clear cover. The volume beneath approaches near fine. The blue cloth binding remains beautifully square and bright as only a jacketed copy can be. We note only a few small blemishes, mild wrinkling to spine ends, and a small bump to the upper rear cover corner. The contents remain quite bright. Slight differential toning to the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms that this copy has spent life jacketed. Light spotting appears entirely confined to the top edge. The fore edge remains quite bright and unspoiled. The sole previous ownership mark is a tiny San Francisco bookseller sticker on the upper rear pastedown. We note a partial, purely cosmetic split to the front pastedown gutter paper; the mull beneath is unaffected and the binding remains firmly attached to the text block.         Correspondence between George Sylvester Viereck and Bainbridge Colby (1930-1932).

9 typed and signed letters with printed letterhead by Viereck: 8 to Colby and one to publisher Mitchell Kennerley. Plus a carbon copy of another letter to Colby in triple, a carbon duplicate of a letter from Colby to Viereck (June 24, 1931), also in triple, and a single carbon duplicate of a letter from Colby to Viereck (July 14, 1931). Most of the letters have been rust stained at the top by paperclips (partly still present). The letters have been folded, but the carbons haven't; otherwise in very good condition. Accompanying this ensemble are an article 'Did President Wilson Pledge Us to War Before He Was Re-Elected?' by G.S. Viereck (p. 54-62 in Liberty, March 19, 1932 (grey-stained) and a two-color 4-page publisher's prospect of Viereck's book of interviews Glimpses of the Great (1930).* Concerning a series of articles by Viereck about President Woodrow Wilson and his friendship with Colonel E.M. House in the course of study for his book The Strangest Friendship in History: Woodrow Wilson and Colonel House (1932). The first letter by Viereck, dating from June 22, 1931, puts three questions to Colby. There are 3 carbon copies of a retyped version of the letter (probably by Colby or his secretary (for there's a mistake in Viereck's printed address), and 3 carbon copies of Colby's 3-page answer. The other 7 letters, dating from June 27, 1931 to April 22, 1932, are about exchanging books and articles concerning Wilson, House and the Great War: "If a President can morally bind the United States to a course of action involving war we are faced b a serious invasion of the treaty-making powers of the Senate and the war-making powers of Congress, for which our children may have to pay with our blood." One gets the impression that the letters after July 14, 1931, went unanswered. The letter to Kennerley (1930) also concerns Colby, House and Wilson.George Sylvester Viereck (1884-1962) was a German born American sensation journalist, decadentistic novelist and poet, a Nazi sympathizer in the 30s and 40s, imprisoned 1942-1947 for his failure to register as a Nazi agent.

        Gargantua

Half-tone photographic frontispiece, 7 similar plates, 10 maps of which one folding and in colour, frequent maps and plans to the text. Spine slightly frayed at extremities with short (14 mm) closed tear to head, tips faintly rubbed and bumped, contents toned, shallow fore-edge chip to preface leaf where clumsily opened, the text unaffected, strip of tanning to rear free endpaper and pastedown. A very good copy. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy of the final volume of The World Crisis, with "To Elbert A. Wickes, Inscribed by Winston Churchill, March 1932" to the front free endpaper. Wickes was the president of Alber & Wickes, the Boston-based literary and theatrical agency which arranged Churchill's money-making American lecture tour undertaken in the winter of 1931-2. In an effort to recoup his losses from the Stock Market crash, Churchill agreed to a series of forty lectures to be given across America "for a guaranteed minimum fee of £10,000" (Gilbert, Churchill, vol. 5, p. 420). Arriving on 11 December, he delivered his first lecture at Worcester, Massachusetts, the following day. On the 13th, back in New York, he was hit by a taxi while crossing Fifth Avenue, sustaining a severe scalp wound and two cracked ribs, and later developing pleurisy. A week-long stay in hospital was followed by two weeks of recuperation at the Waldorf-Astoria, after which he sailed for the Bahamas with Clemmie, not returning until 25 January 1932. He gave the last lecture of the tour was at Boston's Symphony Hall on 10 March. "Had he been killed he would perhaps be remembered today as the most illustrious and interesting failure in twentieth-century British politics. Instead he recovered and returned home to resume his India campaign" (ODNB). Writing to his publisher on his return to Britain he commented: "I am much better, but I feel I need to rest and not to drive myself so hard. You have no idea what I have been through" (Gilbert, op. cit., p. 427)
