Rare Views of Ngapali Beach & Military Police Force

Burma, India, 1931-1936. Photograph album of a high-ranking officer who served with the Rangoon Battalions of the Burma Military Police, containing scenes in Burma from 1931-1933, mostly centered in Rangoon where he was posted, as well as tours throughout India from 1935-1936, and a scant few images from a leave taken in England in between. Contains 113 gelatin silver print photographs and 1 photographic postcard, with detailed manuscript captions, mounted with corners onto black cardstock leaves. Oblong 8vo. black cloth 'Cambrian' album measuring approximately 29,5 x 24 cm. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 8,5 x 6 cm, and the largest 11 x 15 cm. Over half of the album is centered in British Burma, with 64 photographs providing a unique window into the charmed life of a colonial military police officer, as well as a glimpse of indigenous custom. Identified only as George, with the initials G.C.B., the officer served under Brigadier John Francis Bowerman (1857-1934) who is seen in the album with George, and who is renowned for his leadership of the para-military police force in Burma. Views center around Officer George's travels, special events of the Burma Military Police, equestrian competitions and sporting events in which he participated. Some significant persons connected to colonial Burma are seen in the album, including Captain John Francis Bowerman Assistant Commandant of the Burma Military Police, and Colonel Welbourne, Chief of the Police Service. The original photographs of Ngapali from the era of British rule are especially scarce, this album containing eight (8) lovely views. Officer George and his wife stayed in a large bungalow on the beach there. Here he observes local fishermen working together at hauling long nets into the Bay of Bengal. The earliest event captured in these views is the Proclamation Parade held 1 January 1931 in Rangoon (Yangon), where officer George was posted. Other photographs taken the same year show river journeys to small villages, as well as the officer's posh residence. Christmas 1931 was spent in Rangoon. In 1932, evidently Officer George's influence, and perhaps also with his funds, an outdoor spectator's club house was built. Sojourns of the country included Sandoway (Thwande), Andrews Bay (near Kathit Island and Headlam Point), and in December, together with his wife, a riverboat cruise to Paletwa (Palangvum) on a steam vessel called the Hector. Views of Paletwa show but a few cottage style dwellings dispersed in a valley. An "Inspector General Parade" held January 1933 shows the Burma Military Police standing in formation for inspection, Officer George and Captain Lyle on horseback, and being saluted by Police Chief Colonel Welbourne. Other events in 1933 include the Rangoon Horse Show, officer George being a prize winner in the jumping competition, an event at Kokine swimming club, and a polo match. In one of the polo tournament photographs George poses with team mates, one of whom is Brigadier John Francis Bowerman, and their opponents, which include a Captain de Salis and Geoffrey Bostock who was at the time the manager of Bombay Burma Trading Corporation and later an Air Evacuation Officer at Schwebo during WWII. Officer George and his team evidently won the Lim Chin Tsong Polo Cup in Rangoon in 1933. [The Lim Chin Tsong Polo Cup Tournament in Rangoon was started in 1917] The Burma Military Police (B.M.P.) was created from units of the Indian Army after the suppression of the disorders following the 1852 annexation of the country by the British. The force was expanded in the same manner after the 1885 annexation of Upper Burma following the Third Anglo-Burmese War. European Officers were seconded from the Indian Army (and sometimes from the British Army) and Indian Officers and men were recruited from the Punjab and Nepal. Its purpose of the force was the maintenance of internal security. Whilst maintaining peace among the quarrelsome hill tribes, the officers gained excellent experience in military operations in Burma's jungle-covered mountainous frontier lands. A special manual published by the Burma Military Police in 1902 became the primary and authoritative source for jungle warfare training. The manual was revised in 1928. It was strictly officers and men of the Burma Military Police who were trained in jungle warfare in Burma in the 1920s and 1930s, and they were regularly tested on infantry tactics in the jungle, and inspected annually. As such, officer George would have been one of the select officers specially trained in jungle warfare. The frontier battalions of the Burma Military Police were reorganized into a special army, in April 1937, becoming the Burma Frontier Force. In 1932, at the time of these photographs, the strength of the Burma Military Police was distributed as follows: Rangoon (2 battalions); Mandalay (1 battalion); Chin Hills (1 battalion); Lashio (Northern Shan States Battalion); Taunggyi (Southern Shan States Battalion); Bhamo (1 battalion); Myitkyina (1 battalion); and Pyawbwe (reserve battalion). In 1930 the Burma Military Police began training wireless operators for the Army. By 1934 a comprehensive wireless network was established throughout the country. Following a visit to Cornwall, England, in August 1934, illustrated in 14 photographs, it seems that officer George and his wife have returned to the Indian subcontinent and settled in Poona (Pune), From 1935 to 1936, the couple visited some of the country's most notable cities and monuments, the present album containing 36 photographs. Photographs from India capture tranquil views of Karwar, Karnataka, and the nearby beach of Belekeri, and an early visit to the Bhatghar Dam (Lloyd Dam) which was constructed only eight years prior in 1927, and the headquarters of the Indian Armed Forces, in the Secretariat building which was built in New Delhi from 1912-1927. As far as antiquity is concerned, we find photographs of the tomb of Jahangir at Shahdara Bagh on the outskirts of Lahore, a single photograph of the small Sas-bahu Temple at Gwalior Fort, and the ornamental Anup Talao pool and central platform, built for Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great, in Fatehpur Sikri in the late sixteenth century, surrounded by important royal buildings including Akbar's residence, and partly restored under Lord Cruzon (1859-1925). In Delhi, the couple also photographed the Qutub Minar iron pillar situated in the Qutub complex and famous for its testament to skillful ironwork of ancient times. They paid a visit to Fort Delhi, including here views of the hammam (emperor's bath house). And, at Agra in February 1936, they preserved photographs of the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah and its exquisite minarets, the Moti Masjid (Pearl Mosque) at Agra Fort, and of course the Taj Mahal. Brigadier John Francis Bowerman (1857-1934), C.B.E., K.P.M., served in the British Army from 1914 until 1918, transferring to the British Indian Army in 1918 and serving until 1946. He is most notable for his service with the Burma Military Police, which coincided with the expansion of the Myitkyina Battalion of the B.M.P. (by far the largest unit in the force) into two separate units, the Eastern and Western Myitkyina Battalions. He served on the Northwest Frontier of India, 1930-31, and was seconded to Burma from 26th January 1931, Burma Military Police, being appointed Assistant Commandant. He fought in the Saya San Rebellion, Burma, 1930-32, and became Commandant of the Myitkyina Battalion, Burma Frontier Force, in 1937. He was Inspector General of Burma Frontier Force, in 1938 until his 9 month leave. Upon his return, from 1938-1942 he was Commandant of the Southern Shan States Battalion, Burma Frontier Force. He became Liaison Officer to Chinese Army in the Southern Shan States, April 1942, and assumed command of the Burma Frontier Force in Myitkyina on 4 May. On 1st October 1942, he was assigned as Brigadier-General, C.O. 2nd Burma Brigade in India, following which he was made Commander of British troops at Fort Herz in North Burma. After spending several years in Burma, Bowerman left this post to become the British liaison officer to the Chinese 6th Army. He was granted the award of CBE in 1946.

Richard G. Badger, Publisher The Gorham Press, Boston 1931 - Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7 [8-10] 11-249 [250-254: blank] [note: last two leaves are blanks], original decorated black cloth, front panel stamped in gold and blind, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition. A presentation copy with signed inscription by May dated 2 January 1933 on the front free endpaper. Loosely connected short stories narrated by the Wandering Jew about some of his strange adventures. Almost all are fantastic in one way or another. Some develop magical themes from folklore and legend, including Christian sources. Others are tall tales in the true Munchausian tradition, devising grotesque fates for animals. Others are what might be called biological science fiction -- one is a tale of Frankensteinian experiments. Another relates, without explanation, the odd incidents in a haunted house: the spectral figures might be either ghosts or zombies or actors. Another, the longest, is a tale of a lost race beneath the desert of Egypt, reached by a submarine -- in Elizabethan times. Another is a traditional vampire story. A survey of methods of torture and a (female) detective story round out the collection. The writing style is choppy and flat, with little control of narrative flow, suspense, and momentum, failing to develop the full potential of what is, in many cases, imaginative raw material. Scarce. May seems to have been a Midwesterner working in the life insurance business. He produced another work of fiction, a novel, in 1924; both were probably vanity published. Anderson, The Legend of the Wandering Jew, pp. 364-5. Teitler (2013) 840. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Reginald (1979; 1992) or Day, A Supplemental Checklist of Fantastic Literature (1963). A fine copy in very good decorated dust jacket with light wear and short closed tears, mostly along bottom edge. An elusive book rarely found in jacket.         Selbstbildnis eines jungen Malers". Expressionistisches Selbstbildnis.

Archive of 14 original photographs of movie theater marquees, circa 1930s

N.p., N.p. 1931 - Archive of 14 vintage photographs of movie theaters circa 1931. Each with a holograph pencil notation on the verso identifying the theater and city. Three photographs with the photographer's stamp bearing his name and Reading, PA address on the verso. Films by Warner Brothers, Fox, Columbia, Paramount, and RKO are represented in the archive. Seven of photographs have the stamp of photographer Jack Thamm, and feature theaters from Thamm's native Pennsylvania, while the remainder show theaters from as far afield as St. Louis, MO, Santa Barbara, CA, and Sheboygan, WI. Many of the images show the theaters in the larger context of the places they resided, featuring the street, other shop fronts and signage, pedestrians, and cars. Theaters represented in the archive include Capitol, Shubert, Regent, and Warner theaters, as well as independently owned cinemas. The penciled notations on the verso of each photograph are all in the same hand, likely indicating all the photographs were shot by Thamm. In addition to providing striking images of the single screen, art deco influenced movie theaters that dominated American cities and towns between the wars, the archive also provides a window into film exhibition and advertising. The films showcased on the marquees include well remembered pre-code film such as "Star Witness," "The Public Enemy," and "Mammy," and stars such as James Cagney, Jean Arthur, and Fay Wray, as well as more time-obscured films and stars such as "Party Husband" (Dorothy Mackaill) and "Laugh and Get Rich" (Dorothy Lee, Edna May Oliver). Finally, a few of the photographs also show the ways theaters attempted entice the the movie going public inside, and presumably away from the competition, including showcasing their "perfected Vitaphone and Movietone" sound systems, air conditioning making it "cooler inside," and, most intriguingly, the Shubert Theater in Pittsburgh advertising "living models" on stage and "for men only" for a Bud Pollard exploitation double feature of "Rio's Road to Hell" (1931) and "Girls for Sale" (1927). Sadly, in a competitive market place brought on by the Great Depression these gimmicks did not always work, and two of images captured closed and boarded up theaters. After enlisting in WWI, Jack Thamm worked as a reporter and photographer for "The Reading [PA] Times" before launching his own photography business, and working as a police photographer. He reenlisted in the Marines during World War II, and died of a heart attack at 48 shortly after the war. Photographs roughly 7 x 5.25 inches (18 x 13 cm). Generally about Near Fine.

Enclosed in a quarter blue morocco and cloth box lettered in gilt and stamped with the owner’s name on the top. A perfectly preserved designer binding. A scarce and desirable edition of this classic children’s book, one of a very few books illustrated by the talented Gwynedd Hudson whose “Alice” is her best known book. This title is lavishly illustrated on almost every page in vibrant colors, much brighter than her rather dark “Alice”. The binding was created for the late California collector Edwin Mayall for his 14 year-old daughter Patty who later suggested color schemes and overall designs in letters to Johnson that were themselves so artistic that Johnson invited her to come and study calligraphy and design with him in England. Loker, Grolier Children’s 100, #63. See British Bookbinding Today, p.29. Modern British Bookbinding (exhibition catalogue) p.17.

Scarce Typed Letter Signed on "Pierpont-Morgan Library" stationery

New York, 1931. unbound. 1 page, 11 x 8 inches, New York City, February 7, 1931, to acclaimed military surgeon Frank Lester Pleadwell, in full: "In reply to your letter of January 31, we will be very glad to have you make any use you desire of the Halleck and Drake's Croaker poems in this library, of which we sent you Photostats." Minor fraying at the right-hand margin, but still in very good condition. African-American librarian, who as the personal assistant to J.P. Morgan, and later his estate, from 1905 to 1948, personally helped amass one of the world's greatest libraries of books, rare manuscripts, and art. Note: Belle da Costa Greene was born Belle Marian Greener, the daughter of the first black man to graduate Harvard, changed her name, obliterated her true background, invented a Portuguese ancestry, and successfully "passed" for white in turn-of-the-century New York Society, never acknowledging her African lineage. All of this might help to explain why she is absent from some of the most prestigious and permanent collections of Africa-American history. There are currently no offerings on the internet of anything signed by da Costa Greene.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1931 - 1931 Original Hardback Wisden

1931. Hi, This lot is a 1931 Original Hardback Wisden in very good Condition, This Wisden is a very nice book, especially for the year as the 1931 is a very large book, the hinges tend to give way but this is not the case in this book. The gilt to the front is very bright, the boards are very clean with only the odd small mark to the front and rear. The spine cloth has some wear to the base, not sure how to explain it but looks rubbed, not off putting though. The hinges are both excellent and springy and the inside of the book is very presentable without restoration. The page block at the top of the book is dark and the board corners are inturned slightly. Excellent photoplate. A Very Good 1931.

1931Paris, Editions Jeanne Walter, 1931. FIRST EDITION, limited to 1000 numbered copies. Bibliographie : M. Parr, G.         Camps in the Woods

Architectural Book Publishing Co, New York 1931 - Folio. 96pp. Illustrated from photographs by John Wallace Gillies, Inc. and original drawings prepared in the office of the author. Original gilt-decorated cloth; dust jacket. A fine presentation copy, inscribed by Shepard to Godrey Haggard, noted United Kingdom politician who at the time was Consul General to Guatemala. Shepard designed many camps and cottages for the Adirondack League Club, a private landowner's association founded in 1890 in Old Forge (Herkimer County). Included are architectural drawings of private camps, boathouses, outbuildings, interior details, furniture, gates, and fireplaces. This work proved influential in the design of structures in national parks. Of his own work, Shepard wrote " in the design of these camps we see the structural element logically emphasized. Visible construction may be said to stand as an architectural symbol of nature's growth, and these camps make their strongest appeal in the fact that their designs are so definitely based on structure. This is evident in the roof trusses, the peeled log and pole beams and the split pole studs, so frequently used. Every detail possesses some structural significance. Simplicity is the keynote of the design as it is in nature.". Some soiling to cloth, a few chips/small losses to jacket at edges [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Who's Who in China. Containing the Pictures and Biographies of China's best known Political, Financial, Business and Professional Leaders

Shanghai: China Weekly Review, 1931. Hardcover. Otherwise very good condition. Fourth updated edition of a volume first published in 1918. More than 1,000 biographical sketches of important Chinese men and women during the period of internal upheaval and foreign aggression in which China emerged from centuries of imperial dynastic rule to become the Republic of China. This precarious period, in which with regional power centers fought one another for control, nevertheless produced an outreach to the outside world, seen here in the complicated lives of individuals. This is the first copy that we have encountered on the market. The sketches are almost universally accompanied with photographic portraits (some dressed in Western clothing, some in Chinese), which appeared previously in the China Weekly Review; an advertisement at the rear of the volume states that The Review was first published in 1917, and was the most widely read foreign language paper published in the Far East. The sketches include many military, government and finance figures, including: Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the Republic's first president: "with wonderful power of revolutionary organization, this one man was largely responsible for the overthrow of the autocratic though effete, Manchu Dynasty" (first page following the Preface,) and General Chiang Kai-shek (p78). Dr. Vi-Kyuin Wellington Koo, retired government official, and author of "The Status of Aliens in China" is also listed here; he wrote about extraterritoriality and the protection it offered to aliens in China, was educated at Columbia University and retired in 1927 as Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs (p208). Interestingly, we have not located the names of early Communist Party members in these pages; some individuals recorded as government officials have biographies which conclude "no further information as of 1923". People in other professions include the head of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce; a university professor who studied at Grinnell College in the US; a railroad company executive; a Shanghai district court judge; a jurist and lecturer who studied in Berlin before becoming general manager of the China Times in Shanghai, and many more. One of the few women who appear is Mrs. Herman C. E. Liu, described as a "welfare worker". Mrs. Liu was born in 1897, graduated from Northwestern University, and became president of the Woman Suffrage Association of China (women won the right to vote in China in 1947). She also served on the Birth Control League of China, and was founder of the Shanghai Settlement house for slave girls (p268). 8vo, 512pp, 25pp index, 7 pp ads, and ads at paste downs. The index is enormously helpful as it gives the names of each individual in English and Chinese and the page on their profile appears. Text printed in two columns. Black cloth covers, gilt title on front, spine and back cover (in Chinese). The back cover with ornate gilt borders, the gilt a bit rubbed. Covers slt marked, corners a bit bumped, interior clean and unmarked. Preface dated 1931. Small typed paper label laid down on title page: "With the compliments of Dr. C.T. Wang." possibly referring to Dr. Chengting T. Wang (1882-1961) who was a diplomat for the Republic of China and Ambassador to the United States. OCLC: 3444106.
