La.Fi.) Die Lagerfibel. (Ein Wegweiser für den inneren Dienstbetrieb in den F.A.D-Lagern).

Mit 38 Bildern u. Zeichn. i. Text. 73 (1) S., 1 Bl. Halbleinen d. Zeit. m. 2 Rückenschildern. 18x13 cm. Who's Who in China. Containing the Pictures and Biographies of China's best known Political, Financial, Business and Professional Leaders

Shanghai: China Weekly Review, 1931. Hardcover. Otherwise very good condition. Fourth updated edition of a volume first published in 1918. More than 1,000 biographical sketches of important Chinese men and women during the period of internal upheaval and foreign aggression in which China emerged from centuries of imperial dynastic rule to become the Republic of China. This precarious period, in which with regional power centers fought one another for control, nevertheless produced an outreach to the outside world, seen here in the complicated lives of individuals. This is the first copy that we have encountered on the market. The sketches are almost universally accompanied with photographic portraits (some dressed in Western clothing, some in Chinese), which appeared previously in the China Weekly Review; an advertisement at the rear of the volume states that The Review was first published in 1917, and was the most widely read foreign language paper published in the Far East. The sketches include many military, government and finance figures, including: Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the Republic's first president: "with wonderful power of revolutionary organization, this one man was largely responsible for the overthrow of the autocratic though effete, Manchu Dynasty" (first page following the Preface,) and General Chiang Kai-shek (p78). Dr. Vi-Kyuin Wellington Koo, retired government official, and author of "The Status of Aliens in China" is also listed here; he wrote about extraterritoriality and the protection it offered to aliens in China, was educated at Columbia University and retired in 1927 as Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs (p208). Interestingly, we have not located the names of early Communist Party members in these pages; some individuals recorded as government officials have biographies which conclude "no further information as of 1923".People in other professions include the head of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce; a university professor who studied at Grinnell College in the US; a railroad company executive; a Shanghai district court judge; a jurist and lecturer who studied in Berlin before becoming general manager of the China Times in Shanghai, and many more. One of the few women who appear is Mrs. Herman C. E. Liu, described as a "welfare worker". Mrs. Liu was born in 1897, graduated from Northwestern University, and became president of the Woman Suffrage Association of China (women won the right to vote in China in 1947). She also served on the Birth Control League of China, and was founder of the Shanghai Settlement house for slave girls (p268).8vo, 512pp, 25pp index, 7 pp ads, and ads at paste downs. The index is enormously helpful as it gives the names of each individual in English and Chinese and the page on their profile appears. Text printed in two columns. Black cloth covers, gilt title on front, spine and back cover (in Chinese). The back cover with ornate gilt borders, the gilt a bit rubbed. Covers slt marked, corners a bit bumped, interior clean and unmarked. Preface dated 1931. Small typed paper label laid down on title page: "With the compliments of Dr. C.T. Wang." possibly referring to Dr. Chengting T. Wang (1882-1961) who was a diplomat for the Republic of China and Ambassador to the United States. OCLC: 3444106.

Hamiltonian Systems and Transformations in Hilbert Space" (Koopman) AND "Proof of the Ergodic Theorem" (Birkhoff) AND "Proof of the Ergodic Theorem" (Birkhoff) in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Vol. 17, 1931, Washington DC: National Academy of Sciences, pp. 315-318, pp. 650-660, pp. 656-660

Mac Printing Co, Eaton 1931 - BOUND FIRST EDITION OF BOTH SEMINAL PAPERS IN STATISTICAL MECHANICS - KOOPMAN'S INDIVIDUAL ERGODIC THEOREM, THE BEGINNING OF MODERN ERGODIC THEORY AND BIRKHOFF'S TWO PAPERS, ONE STATING HIS MEAN ERGODIC THEOREM AND THE SECOND, PROVING IT. Ergodic theory is a branch of mathematics examining dynamical systems with an invariant measure and related problems, its development was motivated by problems of statistical physics. The theorems Koopman and Birkhoff put forth in this volume "were of great significance both in mathematics and in statistical mechanics. In statistical mechanics they provided a key insight into a 60 year old fundamental problem of the subject - namely, the rationale for the hypothesis that time averages can be set equal to phase averages" (Moore, Ergodic Theorem, Ergodic Theory, and Statistical Mechanics, January 2015). Ergodic theory developed as something of an offshoot from the work on the kinetic theory of gases of Boltzman and Maxwell. "The strategy underlying ergodic theory is to focus on simple yet relevant models to obtain deeper insights about notions that are pertinent to the foundations of statistical mechanics while avoiding unnecessary technical complications. Ergodic theory abstracts away from dynamical associations including forces, potential and kinetic energies, and the like? It focuses on certain structural and dynamical features that are deemed essential to understanding the nature of the seemingly random behaviour of deterministically evolving physical systems. The selected features were carefully integrated, and the end result is a mathematical construct that has proven to be very effective in revealing deep insights that would otherwise have gone unnoticed" (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). The modern form of ergodic theory began with the Koopman paper offered here, a work that has been the backbone of statistical mechanics since its appearance. von Neumann's development of his Hilbert space formulation of quantum mechanics in the late 1920s "inspired Koopman [put forth in this 1931 paper] to develop a Hilbert space formulation of classical statistical mechanics. In both cases, the formula for the time evolution of the state of a system corresponds to a unitary operator that is defined on a Hilbert space; a unitary operator is a type of measure-preserving transformation" (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). "Koopman's observation was simultaneously a challenge and a hint. If there is an intimate connection between measure preserving transformations and unitary operators, then the known analytic theory of such operators must surely give some information about the geometric behavior of the transformations" (Halmos, 91). By October of the same year, von Neumann had the answer; the answer was the mean ergodic theorem; he used Koopman's innovation to prove what has come to be called the mean ergodic theorem- but he didn't publish it until 1932. Birkhoff, however, built immediately upon Koopman's work and published both his ergodic theorem and his proof of his theorem in 1931 and in this volume. Though von Neumann believed Birkhoff used some of the ideas he had yet to publish and was displeased to be scooped, he also stated that "Birkhoff informed us that he had another proof which showed even somewhat more than mine: Instead of mean convergence, he could prove convergence everywhere excepted on a set of measure 0" (Nadis, A History in Sum). CONDITION & DETAILS: Eaton: Mack Printing Company. 4to (10 x 7 inches; 250 x 175mm). Volume has been handsomely rebound in aged brown cloth (identical to original binding). Gilt-lettered and dated at the spine. Solidly and tightly bound. New endpapers. Bright and clean throughout. Near fine condition in every way. [Attributes: First Edition]

Archive of 14 original photographs of movie theater marquees, circa 1930s

N.p.: N.p., 1931. Archive of 14 vintage photographs of movie theaters circa 1931. Each with a holograph pencil notation on the verso identifying the theater and city. Three photographs with the photographer's stamp bearing his name and Reading, PA address on the verso. Films by Warner Brothers, Fox, Columbia, Paramount, and RKO are represented in the archive. Seven of photographs have the stamp of photographer Jack Thamm, and feature theaters from Thamm's native Pennsylvania, while the remainder show theaters from as far afield as St. Louis, MO, Santa Barbara, CA, and Sheboygan, WI. Many of the images show the theaters in the larger context of the places they resided, featuring the street, other shop fronts and signage, pedestrians, and cars. Theaters represented in the archive include Capitol, Shubert, Regent, and Warner theaters, as well as independently owned cinemas. The penciled notations on the verso of each photograph are all in the same hand, likely indicating all the photographs were shot by Thamm. In addition to providing striking images of the single screen, art deco influenced movie theaters that dominated American cities and towns between the wars, the archive also provides a window into film exhibition and advertising. The films showcased on the marquees include well remembered pre-code film such as "Star Witness," "The Public Enemy," and "Mammy," and stars such as James Cagney, Jean Arthur, and Fay Wray, as well as more time-obscured films and stars such as "Party Husband" (Dorothy Mackaill) and "Laugh and Get Rich" (Dorothy Lee, Edna May Oliver). Finally, a few of the photographs also show the ways theaters attempted entice the the movie going public inside, and presumably away from the competition, including showcasing their "perfected Vitaphone and Movietone" sound systems, air conditioning making it "cooler inside," and, most intriguingly, the Shubert Theater in Pittsburgh advertising "living models" on stage and "for men only" for a Bud Pollard exploitation double feature of "Rio's Road to Hell" (1931) and "Girls for Sale" (1927). Sadly, in a competitive market place brought on by the Great Depression these gimmicks did not always work, and two of images captured closed and boarded up theaters. After enlisting in WWI, Jack Thamm worked as a reporter and photographer for "The Reading [PA] Times" before launching his own photography business, and working as a police photographer. He reenlisted in the Marines during World War II, and died of a heart attack at 48 shortly after the war. Photographs roughly 7 x 5.25 inches (18 x 13 cm). Generally about Near Fine.

        The Art of Wave Riding

Hollywood, CA: The Cloister Press, 1931. First Edition. Octavo. Limited. 3 preliminary leaves, 26 pages, photographic illustrations. This rare item is in as new condition of which only 500 copies were printed and has been sought after by the most serious collector of surfing books. It is considered the first important book on surfing (see The Encyclopedia of Surfing, p. 158). Ron Drummond was one of the three great California surfers in the late 1920's and 30's (although he was still surfing in his early 80's). From his experimenting with a canoe at age 14 in the Hermosa surf (which a powerful surf broke in two), he became a well known surfer and an expert on the five different breaks at Dana's Killer Point [before developers ended its attraction to serious surfers]. Surfer Magazine which was founded at Dana Point has over the decades featured article on Ron Drummond and his role in history. He introduced people to terms such as "glide waves" and "sand busters". He writes: "One feels sorry for those who have not learned to enjoy surf swimming..."To spend a day in the sand developing a 'beautiful tan' is pleasant; but the real pleasure of a trip to the beach is derived from playing in the breakers." Bound in stiff paper wraps.

        Original Lithograph

1931 - KOLLWITZ, Käthe. Famille, II. Fassung [Family, Second Version]. Original lithograph, signed in pencil. [Berlin: 1931]. Measures 20 by 16 inches, matted. $9000.Lovely and famous original Kollwitz lithograph of a family, depicting a baby reaching over its father's shoulder for its smiling mother, signed by the artist in pencil in the lower right corner."It may seem surprising that there is a considerable number of works among Käthe Kollwitz' ?uvre which show mothers with one or more children in carefree mood. Kollwitz did not only portray the poverty and need of working-class life in children, but also the happy moments in the lives of these people. While these themes pervade the artist's entire work, there was a concentration in the second half of the 1920s when the worst poverty of the post-war period had abated. In the drawings the children are not exactly bursting with vitality, they are hardly ever playing unlike, for example, in the works of the Impressionists, and they are asleep or daydreaming. They are rarely portrayed alone, they are almost always with their mother, leaning up against her, sitting on her lap or held in her arms. They enjoy the intimate closeness of their mother who turns lovingly towards them or simply gives them a sense of protective security. There are very few works, in which as in this lithograph, fathers also occur" (Käthe Kollwitz Museum, Köln). Kollwitz completed this lithograph in 1931; after the rise to power in 1933 of the National Socialists, she was forced to leave her position in the Preußische Akademie der Künste. By 1935 there was an unofficial ban in place against exhibiting any of her work. Though threatened with deportation to a concentration camp, by the war years she had attained too great an international standing for the Nazis to follow through on their threats. Fine condition.

        Kibbo Kift - Scetch Pad

The Kin Press, London 1931 - An original Kibbo Kift sketch pad - Drawing Book - Sketch Pad. A rare original embossed buckram drawing book with original KK designed cover. Pages almost entirely blank apart from a list of KK related items made by Stanley Dixon "Hawk" the KK Gleemaster, who later organised the music for the Green Shirts. Spine professionally restored in matching style designs. The organisation was founded by the charismatic Englishman John Hargrave (aka 'White Fox'), artist, author and Boy Scout Commissioner for Woodcraft and Camping, who had become disenchanted with the increasingly militaristic tendency in the Scout movement after World War I. Hargrave was promptly expelled from the Scouts by Scout founder Robert Baden-Powell. With a small group of like-minded, dissident, anti-war Scoutmasters and Scoutmistresses under his own direct leadership, he set about building an alternative and very different movement. Baden-Powell expelled Hargrave with extreme reluctance, and only after some wealthy backers had threatened to withdraw funding from the Scouts unless he was expelled. The Kibbo Kift (archaic Kentish dialect for 'proof of great strength'[2]) has been described as 'the only genuine English national movement of modern times' and was certainly very different from Baden-Powell's Boy Scouts. Based on the woodcraft principles of naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton that had been a key part of the early Scout programme, the Kibbo Kift was to be not merely a youth organisation but was to involve all ages and, very daring for the times, it was open to both sexes. The ideas of world peace and the regeneration of urban man through the open-air life replaced the nationalism and militarism Hargrave had detested in the post-World War I Scouts. Kinsmen and women were organised in Clans, Tribes and Lodges. Each individual took a 'woodcraft name', inspired by their ideas of 'Indian-style' names. The correct costume had to be hand-made by each individual or 'rooftree' (family group) and while the everyday 'habit' of Saxon hood, jerkin, shorts and long cloak must have seemed outlandish enough in the English countryside of the early 1920s; for ceremonial occasions, brilliantly coloured surcoats or silk-embroidered robes were worn by the various office-holders such as the Tallykeeper, Campswarden, Ritesmaster and Gleeman. Hargrave himself was 'Head Man' and his leadership was dynamic, inspirational and frankly autocratic. The Mark of the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift is typical of the symbolism that can be seen in many of their designs. Its meaning is: Worship (The K sign) Forever (the Circle of Unity and Eternity) Life (the Flame) through Knowledge (the Tree). Or again, ‘Worship Life Forever with Knowledge’. The Kibbo Kift's central activities of hiking and camping were refined and elevated to the level of a spiritual exercise. The weekend 'Tribal' Camps and the great annual 'Althing' were marked by colourful and impressive ritual, inspired by their ideas of what Native American ceremonies might be like, but couched in language reminiscent of the Norse Sagas and rich in Saxon archaisms. Kinsmen were not only required to make their own lightweight, one-man hiking tents (the first seen in England) but to decorate them with vivid, symbolic designs of their own devising. Influenced by Hargrave's own artistic taste, an ultra-modern 'futurist' style of design became general, and the robes, regalia, tents and other items of decorative art, often of an extremely high standard, represent an extraordinary 'democratisation' of the avant-garde art of the day. The Kibbo Kift were never more than a few hundred strong. Kinsmen and Kinswomen included the Suffragettes Emmeline Pethick Lawrence, Mary Neal and May Billinghurst, the journalist Henry Nevinson, the photographer Angus McBean, and Ruth Clark. The Advisory Committee included Havelock Ellis, Maurice Maeterlinck, the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, H. G. Wells and Professor Julian Huxley. D. H. Lawrence took an interest [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

James Riley, Master, upon the Western Coast of Africa, August 28th, 1815; also of the Slavery and Sufferings of the Author and the Rest of the Crew, upon the Desert of Zahara, in the Years 1815, 1816, 1817, with Accounts of the Manners and Customs of the Wandering Arabs. WITH: 16 signed original pen-and-ink drawings for the book by Earle B. Winslow. Greenwich, Connecticut: Condé Nast Press, 1931. 12 items, altogether. Tall octavo, original full debossed cream calf gilt, all edges gilt, original glassine wrapper, original cloth slipcase; 16 original pen-and-ink drawings matted (the six vignettes matted together; largest matt size 14-1/2 by 19 inches). Housed in matching custom clamshell boxes. $5800.Signed limited edition, number 189 of only 355 copies, of this harrowing account of the shipwrecked brig Commerce in 1815, signed by illustrator Earle B. Winslow, together with 16 original pen-and-ink drawings made by Winslow for the book (ten large full-page drawings and six chapter vignettes)."When the American brig Commerce ran aground on the coast of northwest Africa in 1815, Captain James Riley and his crew knew enough to be terrified. Accounts written by other mariners shipwrecked along the same coast chronicled brutal enslavement at the hands of ruthless desert nomads. A few reports suggested that the natives were cannibals. Rather than test the validity of those claims, the sailors quickly set back to sea in a longboat. Nine days later, plagued by thirst and suffering from exposure, they had no chance but to return to shore. Soon after, the crew was captured by Bedouins and forced to march across the Sahara for days with little food or water". Eventually Riley convinced a desert trader to purchase himself and four members of his crew". [so that] they could be ransomed and returned home". When Riley finally reached safety in 1817, he published his ordeal as Sufferings in Africa" (Mark Kirby). This is the same terrifying story, recounted by one of the four surviving members of Riley's crew, Archibald Robbins, and published the same year under the title Robbins' Journal. Both accounts were international bestsellers upon their appearance, and Riley and Robbins became national heroes. Abraham Lincoln counted Riley's Sufferings as one of the six most influential books that he had read in his youth (he actually referred to it often during his presidency). The illustrator of this limited re-publication of Robbins' Journal, Earle B. Winslow studied at New York's Art Students League with George Bellows and John Sloan. In 1929, he established his own commercial art studio, and produced advertisements for Exide batteries for which he won an Art directors Award. "Winslow was a member of the Society of Illustrators, the Artists Guild, the Art Directors Club of New York, and the Salmagundi Club, and produced illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, Women's Home Companion, Liberty, and Outdoor Life". In 1948, Winslow became an instructor at Pratt Institute, and at various other visual arts and cartoon schools" (Smithsonian Institution). Original drawings and book fine, chipping to spine panel of original glassine wrapper, light shelf-wear to original slipcase. A splendid combination of a fine limited edition with 16 of its original drawings. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Housed in a custom slipcase. $1650.Signed limited first edition, number 180 of only 550 copies signed by O'Neill, with eight facsimile leaves of O'Neill's notes on the play in a special pocket at the rear of the book."Mourning Becomes Electra is in many respects O'Neill's most successful work. Les Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles, completed in 1461 and published in 1486, is a collection of licentious stories supposedly narrated by various persons at the court of Philippe le Bon, and collected by Antoine de la Sale in the mid-15th century.

Mise en Page. The Theory and Practice of Lay-Out.

The Studio Ltd. London, 1931. On 118 unnumbered pages and with numerous text illustrations and 16 original art plates, some with pochoir colouring, this book presents a variety of printing techniques and materials. 4to (27,5 x 22 cm). Original cloth-backed printed boards, a little rubbed and soiled. Slipcase rubbed and worn. "...it contains numerous tipped-in pages with some outrageous pieces of finishing. Foils, embossing, hand-painting, different stocks (including wood veneer) and enamelling are just some of the arsenal of devices on display. That the book was produced by a printer is no surprise. /.../ This book on the art of layout was a highly influential publication, which promoted the modern style of design - a seductive blend of curvilinear forms that ignored the intellectual tendencies of the avant-garde." (100 Classic Graphic Design Books pp. 74-75). This classic on 20th century graphic design by Alfred Tolmer and features the English translation of Alfred Tolmer's text as well as the original French text. This influential primer on modern layout continues to be consulted today, if only for the inspirational design of this book alone.

FOTO MAGAZINE.; PUBLICACION MENSUAL ILUSTRADA CONSAGRADA AL ARTE FOTOGRAFICO

Buenos Aires: (Sociedad Estimulo de Bellas Artes. Sección Fotografía), 1931. First editions. Small 4tos. 48 issues bound in 3 volumes, 468, 452, 110, 307 pp., plus adverts, illustrated from b&w photographs. Contemporary cloth and marbled paper over boards, with the spines titled, dated and numbered in gilt; all original wrappers bound in. Very good. Although photography was certainly practiced and embraced in Latin America, there were only a few earlier magazines from the region - technical circulars issued by U.S. photographic suppliers to Mexico, an annual publication of the Camera Club of Buenos Aires, and possibly a few others. Initially, the scope of this monthly publication followed the course of so many other photography magazines of the era, with articles geared to the amateur and professional studio photographer, and reproducing photographs by local practitioners. By the third issue, the magazine declared itself "devoted to photography as a fine art", and included regular reviews of local exhibitions, and a greater number of photographs from South American photographers. By 1929, the work of well-known international photographers appeared in its pages. Issue No. 40 from 1930 is the catalogue for a large international salon, held in Buenos Aires; among the exhibitors were Anne Brigman, Andre Kertesz, Frantisek Drtikol, Alexander Keighley, et al. Koelzer, No. 08370 lists the publication dates as 1927 - ? (1927 - 1933), and cites four locations; one is a similar title but published in Barcelona, two do not list this title in their online catalogues, and Harvard University's copy is on microfilm, which is also the only location cited by WorldCat. The spines correctly list the contents to 48 issues; however, the dates are incorrectly listed as 1927 - 1929. A long, full, and possibly complete run of this rare serial.
