Materials from Competitions: All-Union Students' Competition for Communal Apartment Building, [and] Leningrad Soviet Competition for Workers Apartment Building]

Leningrad: Kubuch, 1931. 84 pp.: ill. 26x36 cm. In original publisher's card boards with cloth spine. Boards are rubbed with some soiling and small tears. Otherwise a very good clean copy. Very rare. The first and only edition. One of 5100 copies. This book is an incredible compilation of a unique experience which young student architects had during the 1920s. They were creating designs for this utopian future using mostly constructivist elements. Design sketches presented in this book are themselves unique and brilliant thanks to photomontage techniques. Constructivist styled book design. Communal apartment building (or house-commune) was considered a bright architectural and social phenomenon of 1920s-30s which embodied proletarian idea of socialization of everyday life - one of the manifestations of the constructivist era. The commune house was the sublime symbol of socialism in construction, the revolution of the everyday life. The first commune house of Soviet architecture was the experimental project conducted in 1920 by N. Ladovsky, the ideologue of rationalism, an architectural avant-garde current parallel to constructivism. The finest example of the commune house is without a doubt the Narkomfin building, apartment building for workers in the People's Commissariat of Finance, built in 1928-1930 in Moscow by architects M. Ginsburg and I. Milinis. In this edition house-communes called 'houses of reconstructive period' meaning from the 'bourgeois' house to the 'socialist' where family structure should be destroyed. All processes should be divided in such house: sleep, rest, eating, study and produce, raising children, cultural maintenance, hygienic part, etc. The Moscow Institute (VKhUTEIN) students presented a new vision of house-commune. Their projects showed the influence of the theoretical and practical views of I. Leonidov (1902-1959) who was one of the brightest Soviet avant-garde architects and lived in the house-commune. Overall 20 design projects including works by Khidekel, Rubanenko, Fromzel, Baranov, Rusakov, Gal'perin, Vernik, Gedike, E. Il'in, A. Nikolaev, Chemodanov, Popov, Chaiko, and others. Later real processes of the formation of everyday life testified that the family was a stable primary unit of the society. The house commune, based on the complete voluntary self-service of its members, turned out to be a utopia, since it did not take into account the real economic relations of people under socialism («from each according to ability, to each according to work») and as a structural unit of society did not develop. Worldcat locates copies at Columbia University Library, Getty Research Library, MIT Library, Van Pelt Library (University of Pensylvania).

        Arthur Mit Dem Langen Arm.

Royal 8vo. Original light green cloth-backed white pictorial boards; pp. [20]; with coloured illustrations throughout, including 1 full-page; a very good copy indeed with foxing to spine cloth, slight fading to upper board and dusting to edges; scarce. First edition. Four short stories in rhyme for children by the renowned author of Emil and the Detectives (1929). Erich Kästner (1899-1974) was a left-wing German writer, poet and satirist who wrote for both children and adults. His books were despised by the Nazi elite and fell victim to the notorious book-burning in Berlin on May 10th, 1933, athough he decided to stay in the country and eventually did capitulate to censorship, which destroyed his career. Most of Kästner's children's books were illustrated by Walter Trier who, conversely, did escape Nazi oppression and emigrated to London in 1936 where he collaborated with the British authorities to produce anti-Nazi propaganda.

The Production of High Speed Protons Without the Use of High Voltage

Minneapolis, Minnesota: The American Physical Society, 1931. First Edition. Wraps. Near Fine. First Edition. [4], 593-842 pages. 7 x 10 inches. The entire issue of the Physical Review, Vol. 38 #4 (Second Series), August 15, 1931 offered. Publisher's original green printed wrappers (lightly and uniformly faded). Minor crease to the front cover near the fore-edge. Wraps. The first publication of a proposed method [the cyclotron] to produce high speed protons without the use of high voltage was presented before the National Academy of Sciences in November 1930, and was published in Science in 1930 (Lawrence and Edelfson).Lawrence and Livingston (in Phys. Rev. 37, p1707, 1931) published the results of a preliminary study of the feasibility of this method. The article offered here (in a letter to the editor on p. 834), 'The Production of High Speed Protons Without the Use of High Voltage', reports on the first successful tests and proposes next steps: "There can be little doubt that one million volt ions will be produced with intensities as great as here recorded when the present experimental tube is enlarged to make full use of the magnet. This alteration is now being carried out." Lawrence and Livingston further note that "These experiments make it evident that with quite ordinary laboratory facilities proton beams having great enough energies for nuclear studies can be readily produced with intensities far exceeding the intensities of beams of alpha-particles from radioactive sources...The importance of the production of protons of such speeds can hardly be overestimated..."Lawrence was awarded the Nobel prize for Physics in 1939 for this work, "the invention and development of the cyclotron and for results obtained with it, especially with regard to artificial radioactive elements"(nobel prize org)"A cyclotron is a type of particle accelerator ... in which charged particles accelerate outwards from the center along a spiral path. The particles are held to a spiral trajectory by a static magnetic field and accelerated by a rapidly varying (radio frequency) electric field...For several decades, cyclotrons were the best source of high-energy beams for nuclear physics experiments; several cyclotrons are still in use for this type of research. The results enable the calculation of various properties, such as the mean spacing between atoms and the creation of various collision products. Subsequent chemical and particle analysis of the target material may give insight into nuclear transmutation of the elements used in the target.Cyclotrons can be used in particle therapy to treat cancer. Ion beams from cyclotrons can be used, as in proton therapy, to penetrate the body and kill tumors by radiation damage, while minimizing damage to healthy tissue along their path. Cyclotron beams can be used to bombard other atoms to produce short-lived positron-emitting isotopes suitable for PET imaging." (wiki)Most often found in bound ex-library volumes, we offer here the original issue of the Physical Review as it was published. See Ezhela, et al,, p 60, (Lawrence 1931B).

        Paris

Paris: Jeanne Walter, 1931. Limited First edition. Softcover. vg. 1/1000. Large quarto (11 5/8" x 9"). Unpaginated. [6]pp (Text), [80]pp (Photographs), [2]pp (Colophon). Original glassine over photo-illustrated dust-jacket and blind wrappers, with blue lettering to spine and front cover. Book housed in a modern custom-made quarter black morocco over paper covered board chemise, with silver lettering to spine. Chemise housed in its matching paper covered slipcase. Introduction by Futurist Fernand Léger. "This revolutionary work which introduced Moï Ver to the world is a striking tour de force of photomontage utilizing Bauhaus style photography and design. Its 80 pages of avant-garde photomontages evoke a modern form of Paris through his visualizations. The method in which Moï Ver chose to present his material, in its kaleidoscopic layering and frenzied repetitiveness, emphasizes an experimental approach to picture-construction. In this sense, Paris remains the author's quintessential avant-garde book object. The jacket's front cover superimposes factory smokestacks upon a classic stone colonnade, thus setting up familiar juxtapositions: art and industry, antique and modern, beauty and banality. Moï Ver's Paris is a metropolis pulsating with fast-paced daily life, moving almost out of control. Cobblestone streets, bustling crowds, facades, railway tracks, bridges, the glittering river, and countless monuments shift and shatter here" (Andrew Roth: "The Book of 101 Books," pp. 70-71). It is interesting to note that Karl Lagerfeld's facsimile edition of this work features the photographs in a different order, which seems to indicate that the legendary designer's copy was at some point disbound, with pages mixed up, and rebound without following the original pagination. One of 1000 copies, not all published, of which this is No. 138.Dust-jacket professionally restored at head and tail of spine (3/8ths of an inch at top, and 1 inch at bottom, not affecting lettering). Minor and sporadic rubbing along edges. Front free endpaper slightly smudged. Front free endpaper and fly leaf tightly bound, but slightly loose at bottom. Minor age-toning along paper margin. Text in French. Modern chemise and slipcase in overall very good, glassine and dust-jacket in good+ to very good, wrappers and interior in very good condition.

Jeanne Walter, Paris 1931 - 1/1000.
