Wald, George
1930. 3-ring cloth binder (10 inches tall) collecting offprints from the Journal of General Physiology and other scientific periodicals, from Wald's own library: these are his own copies. This group contains some of his first published works dating back to his graduate school days in the mid 1930s. George Wald's first researches into Vitamin A in the retina, rhodopsin, and a previously unknown carotenoid he called 'retinuene' led to his life's work on the chemistry of vision and the chemical transformations of those vitamins and carotenoids, plus rhodopsin, which in turn became contributions that led to his Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1967, for his "discoveries about the primary physioloigical and chemical processes in the eye." These offprints came from the collection of the Wald family: his collected papers, including these, can be found at Harvard, otherwise, they are very rare both on the market and in institutions. Papers include: The Porphyropsin Visual System (1939), The Visual Systems of Euryhaline Fishes (1941), The Visual system and Vitamins A of th Sea Lamprey (1942), An Experiment in Human Dietary Night-Blindness (1938, with Harold Jeghers and Joseph Arminio), An Experiment in Human Vitamin A-Deficiency (1939, with David Steven), Vitamin A Deficiency, a field study in Newfoundland and Labrador (1941, with David Steven), The Mobilization of Vitamin A by the Sympathico-Adrenal System (1940, with Genevieve Young), The Human Excretion of Carotenoids and Vitamin A (1941, with William R. San Fernando, Trinidad, Tobago, Caribbean, 1930. Hardcover. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 13"x 10". Screw bound black leather boards with gilt decorations. Contains 106 silver gelatin black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 1.5" x 1" and 9" x 6.5" without captions. Bumped spine ends and corners with edgewear, near fine with fine photographs. An aesthetically pleasing photo album of a couple's vacation to Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, circa the 1930s. The album starts with a hand drawn illustration of a woman. From there the photographs are of various places around San Fernando, Trinidad, and Tobago. Most of the photographs include a smaller silver gelatin photograph sized 1.5" x 1" and a larger blown up and printed version of the photograph. The Nariva ferry is one of the first pictures seen before several photographs of baby pictures. The album then focuses on the flora and working class of the island. Pictures of flowers, forest trails, and rivers can be seen stretching for miles, all of which are well shot. Some cities are also photographed, possibly from overhead as many twinkling lights can be seen in the photograph. There are several pictures of the working class on the island with shots of them getting water or working in a hay mill. There are several candid shots of people, one of a man praying, some of young girls smiling, and an interesting photograph of a little boy with a boa constrictor wrapped around his neck and body. The couple also takes pictures of each other with shots of them wakeboarding and enjoying the beach, one … [Click Below for Full Description]

1930. A collection of sixteen vibrant watercolor designs by Vernon Grant for an apparently unpublished children's book called "The Two Elves." Grant was one of the most popular illustrators of the mid-20th century, and his distinctive whimsical style influenced many of his contemporaries, including Walt Disney. Grant is perhaps best known for creating the characters Snap!, Crackle!, and Pop! for Kellogg's Rice Krispies, and the two impish elves depicted in the art for this book bear a close resemblance to their famous brethren, from their oversized ears to their distinctive hats. The story follows the elves on a night-time adventure in a "big airy nursery.plum full of fun" as they spin on a mechanical top, ride a wooden horse, engage in a boxing match, go sailing on a ship with a paper sail and pencil mast, cast for goldfish in a fishbowl, hold a powwow, race in a bright red roadster, feast on tea and cake served by a teddy bear, and dance in a circle with the nursery folk. When the sky begins to brighten, the elves bid their new friends good day, and a final illustration for the back cover of the book shows the weary duo resting under a mushroom in preparation for another night's fun. The brightly-colored watercolor illustrations capture the playful merriment of the story's verses, which a note on the back of the title-page illustration indicates were to be printed in spaces provided below each image, bounded by a watercolor border. Slips typewritten with the text have been provided as placeholders, though the slips were not trimmed and adhered to six of the sheets. Fine, … [Click Below for Full Description]

SEM - [GOURSAT, Georges (1863-1934)]
[Paris, 1930. (19 3/4 x 13 inches). 16pp. with illustrations coloured using the pochoir process. Stitched wrappers. A fine copy of this work containing two stories: one of creative hair-dressing, and the second of a nose-job. Georges Goursat moved to Paris in about 1900 and adopted the professional name 'SEM' in honour of the 19th-century illustrator Chaim (Amédée de Noé), and during his long and very successful working life recorded Paris and the French upper classes during four decades - a speciality was to produce images which are somewhere between straight portraits and outright caricature. He was also capable of more straight-forward illustration, satirical work as well as producing a great deal of purely commercial work. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

THE WHITE BROTHERS
Shanghai.: Browhite Arts., 1930. Shanghai.: Browhite Arts.. 1st Edition.. 1930.. The title says 32 black and white studies but in fact there are 42 photographic plates including the frontispiece, accompanied with historical and descriptive text. Textured maroon cloth covered boards, with the title and author stamped in blind and with an ornate gilt dragon device with faded gilt. First and last pages have pulled away from text block at gutter as usual, but the binding is tight and secure. The title page has light water marking along the inner top edge. Some cover edge wear and light age discolouration to margins but the images are bright and clean and of an amazing quality. The White Brothers (Herbert and Henry) went to China in 1922 as missionaries. They became fascinated with the country and as skilled photographers; they spent much time documenting what they saw. In the foreword and postscript, they describe how their missionary zeal focused on helping talented young Chinese to become self-supporting by colouring and copying their photos. Now highly sought after by collectors, this album is becoming very scarce. .

[Luke, Sir Harry / Lukach, Harry] Ashbee, Charles Robert.
Godden Green, 1930. Octavo. 1 page in original envelope. From the private collection / library of colonial governor, diplomat and historian, Sir Harry Luke. Charles Robert Ashbee (17 May 1863 - 23 May 1942) was an English architect and designer who was a prime mover of the Arts and Crafts movement that took its craft ethic from the works of John Ruskin and its co-operative structure from the socialism of William Morris. Ashbee was born in 1863 in Isleworth, the son of businessman and erotic bibliophile Henry Spencer Ashbee. His Jewish mother developed suffragette views, and his well-educated sisters were progressive as well. Ashbee went to Wellington College and read history at King's College, Cambridge, from 1883 to 1886, and studied under the architect George Frederick Bodley. Ashbee set up his Guild and School of Handicraft in 1888 in London, while a resident at Toynbee Hall, one of the original settlements set up to alleviate inner city poverty, in this case, in the slums of Whitechapel. The fledgling venture was first housed in temporary space but by 1890 had workshops at Essex House, Mile End Road, in the East End, with a retail outlet in the heart of the West End in fashionable Brook Street, Mayfair, more accessible to the Guild's patrons. The School closed in 1895, which Ashbee blamed on „the failure of the Technical Education Board of the L.C.C. to keep its word with the School Committee and the impossibility of carrying on costly educational work in the teeth of state aided competition." The following year the L.C.C. opened the Central School of Arts and Crafts. … [Click Below for Full Description]

James Hanley
London: Privately Printed, 1930. Privately printed by the author (with the help of the anarchist bookseller Charles Lahr), Muswell Hill, London, 1930. First edition. Introduction by Richard Aldington. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Gilt lettering to cover and spine. Woodcut frontispiece by William Roberts. Slim 8vo. Small bookseller pastedown on back of cover. Ever so slight rubbing to edges. Slight lean to spine. A near fine copy in protective clear cover. Limited to 500 copies. This one unnumbered but inscribed by Hanley to R.L. Megroz. The recipient of this copy was a prolific English writer, critic and poet. He served in the British Army at Gallipoli. During WWII, Megroz worked for the BBC. The frontispiece is a striking image by the Vorticist and war artist William Roberts, which encapsulates very well the harrowing tale related by Hanley - in which two British infantrymen, separated from their patrol, toy sadistically with the body of their German captive before killing him and finally dying under artillery fire. (Gibbs A2a) states that only a few copies (10 - 50) were bound in black buckram rather than red. Twelve copies were destroyed by the police (Kershaw 1970), making this a very rare copy of one of the scarcest works of fiction based on a first hand experience of WWI.
