[Texas]. [Cook Books]
Houston, 1930. Good.. [8],264pp. Original cream cloth boards, cover stamped in black. Slightly bowed, lightly soiled. Corners and spine moderately worn. Internally clean. An extensive community cook book compiled and published by the Ladies Association of the First Presbyterian Church in Houston. Each recipe bears the name of its contributor, and in addition to the standard categories such as meats, soups, cakes, cookies, etc., there is also a small section headed "Mexican Dishes," which is mostly comprised of recipes for rice and chili -- there are two recipes for something called "Tamale Loaf." Another particular favorite is a recipe for "Charm Circle," which seems to consist of celery, peas, and lima beans in a tomato-flavored gelatin ring, served with chicken salad in the center of the ring. We locate four copies in OCLC -- Boston Public Library, Baylor, Houston Public, and the MFA Houston.

Palestine Board of Higher Studies, Jerusalem, 1930. Quarto. Unpaginated. 110 pages. Beige printed wrappers with black lettering on the front cover. This is a copy of the 1930 examination presented by the Department of Education, of British Mandatory Palestine, on the event of matriculation of secondary school students, in order to test their aptitude in a variety of pre-proscribed subjects. These formal examinations were first initiated in 1924, and sought a standardized format for educational examination, to allow students to matriculate directly to universities in Britain, from around the British Empire, and other areas of the middle east. These examinations were developed in close coordination with these other institutions of higher education. The exam is presented in English, Hebrew and Arabic. The students had to satisfy the examination board in six subjects. Three were mandatory: English, language and mathematics, while an additional three could be of the students choosing, from a variety of other subjects including, chemistry, physics, botany, geography and history. These exams would continue to be administered until Israeli independence in 1948. There is a fold-out topographical map bound in at the back of the book block (for the geography section of the exam). All content printed in English, Hebrew and Arabic text. Wrappers with chipping, tears, and creasing to extremities, including the spine. Side edge of the book block with some light stains and smudges. Pages throughout with a few sporadic instances of small stains, including the title page. Wrappers in good-, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Norris, Charles (author); Rockwell Kent (illustrator)
Garden City: Doubleday, Doran, 1930. First Edition. First Edition. Basis for the 1931 film directed by John M. Stahl. Included with the book is an extraordinary original bi-fold program for the April 17, 1931 Hollywood premiere of Stahl's film at the Carthay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles, printed in black and gold on lavender cardstock, styled to emulate the novel's dust jacket, with Rockwell Kent's beautiful jacket illustration replicated on the front cover. A native of Chicago, Charles Norris worked as a journalist for some years before finding success as a novelist and playwright whose prescient fiction often dealt with contentious issues like modern education, hereditary and environmental influences, big business, and ethics. His eighth novel advocates for reproductive choice, relating the story of a Catholic family gradually torn apart by too many children and lack of access to birth control. Book: Fine and unread in a Fine dust jacket. Contemporary owner name on front pastedown. Film program: Lavender card stock, custom cut to resemble in two dimensions the shape of a three-dimensional book, with titles and design in black and gilt. Fine.
