Sel'vinskii, I.
Moscow: Gosudarstvennoe izdatel'stvo, 1930. 160 pp. 18,5x12,5 cm. In original cloth with colored lettering on front cover and spine, with original dust jacket with letterpress design by unknown artist. Dust jacket occasionally repaired, with tears and small losses of edges, but book is in fine condition. Second, revised and enlarged edition. One of 3000 copies. Very rare. Dust jacket displays an expressive, 'dancing' design of the title consisting of black and white letters printed on the red background. This is the only constructivist design produced for 'Ulialaevshchina' editions. This is the early version of the most successful epic poem by constructivist poet Il'ia Sel'vinskii (1899-1968). The text was first published in 1927. Initially, the author wrote about the fortunes of a kulak Ulialaev who was defeated by the Red Army during an anarchist kulaks' rebellion. And this character was described more expressive than the Communists. In the late 1920s, this leftist poem was performed by the popular chansonnier and comic actor Mikhail Savoyarov, reciting the text in the costume and aesthetics of the 'Blue Blouse' theater. In 1956, Sel'vinskii had rewritten the text and its main character became Lenin. MoMA 920. Blium 'Prohibited books of Russian writers and literary scholars 1917-1991' #424. [GAMES]
[Fürth]: Klee Spiele, 1930. French-language edition of the German game "Die Kühnen Ozeanflieger," produced for the French market by the German games manufacturer Klee Spiele. Capitalizing on the sensation created by Charles Lindbergh's solo transatlantic flight in 1927, the game encourages "aviateurs" to make their way safely across the ocean, avoiding storms, engine fires, and crash landings. Planes can land safely (and gain points) at more than fifty city airports, each identified in its national language, a list which includes the obvious capitals but also smaller airports like Vigo, Brest and Hull. Text in French. A scarce game, capturing the excitement of the early days of transatlantic flight. Original folding cartographic game board, measuring 11.5 x 16.75 inches, featuring a color-printed map of North America as far west as Chicago, the Atlantic Ocean, and northern Europe as far east as Warsaw. Two chromolithographed launch platforms constructed of wood and cardboard; four chromolithographed planes of wood and paper. Original manufacturer's cardboard box in four compartments with chromolithographed pastedown pictorial label; instruction sheet mounted to interior of lid. Lightest wear to board and pieces; box more heavily rubbed, with two corners split.

LONG, SYDNET.
1930. Original bookplate, (137 x 82 mm), line etching printed in black ink, from one plate on paper, (c-1930), near fine. Long (1871-1955) was born in Goulburn, New South Wales, Long trained in decorative design before moving to Sydney in the early 1890s. He absorbed the lessons of naturalism and plain-air painting at the Art Society of New South Wales School, studying under A. J. Daplyn and Julian Ashton, and began exhibiting works in 1894. Long's greatest triumph in this style was The Spirit of the Plains (1897), using the flowing patterns and pastel colours of Art Nouveau to create a poetic vision of the Australian bush as the incongruous setting for a naked Grecian wood-nymph leading a procession of dancing brolgas. The image in this bookplate is a variation of The Spirit of the planes, and was Used by Long as his personal bookplate.

Gibson, J. B
New York: 1920 [i.e. 1930]. Oblong folio, pp. 200; illustrated throughout; original pictorial wrappers; light wear; near fine. Many advertisements for nautical gear and stuff for the wealthy folks, and pictures of the Cup boats past and present. This is the program for the first America's Cup Races held in Newport, the first program for the J-Boat era, and the last time the Cup was contended for by Sir Thomas Lipton who lost the series in his Shamrock V to Harold Vanderbilt's Enterprise. I once did a bibliography of books on the America's Cup Races, published in part in The American Book Collector way back when; and when I was in business in Rhode Island, Cup books were something of a specialty. In 50 years of selling books, this is the first copy I've encountered. So, not in Rulon-Miller, not in Howland, or Toy. Only the Mariner's Museum in OCLC.

RSS1

Vanguard, 1930. SEE DETAILED DESCRIPTION & PHOTOS BELOW. HOLLYWOOD NOVELS. GRAHAM, CARROLL & GARRETT. Queer People. New York: Vanguard Press, 1930. First Edition, First Printing. A few small aging spots to cloth otherwise very good plus in a very good dust jacket with a few tiny chips and tears. Notoriously rare in dust jacket. The front cover colorful artwork depicts a scantily clad beautiful actress posed in recline on a film set with a director and film crew photographing her. Queer People is considered one of the true landmarks in the continuous evolution of the Hollywood novel. The novel's take of the bizarre and seamy side of the life of Hollywood during its golden age is like no other work of fiction. In the 1976 reprint edition, Budd Schulberg wrote "...in Queer People we have if not THE Hollywood novel - at least a truly seminal work on Hollywood in which may be found the seeds of at least three of the longer-lived Hollywood novels, The Day of the Locust, What Makes Sammy Run? and The Last Tycoon." The book was a scandalous sensation when published and went through numerous printings very quickly. At publication, multi-millionaire film producer Howard Hughes bought the film rights to the novel. He hired Leo McCarey to direct and Ben Hecht to write the screenplay. Hughes biggest problem turned out to be that stars were extremely reluctant to appear in a film that attacked the Hollywood studio system. Hughes initially wanted to cast Jack Oakie and William Haines, but Paramount and MGM refused to loan them out. Unable to secure a significant cast, Hughes ended the pro … [Click Below for Full Description]

Glan, B.N.
[Moscow]: Molodaya gvardiya, 1930. 46, [2] pp. 18x13 cm. 2nd ed. In original illustrated stapled wrappers. Wrappers are loose, with some rubbing. Otherwise very good and clean. Uncut. Very rare. One of 10000 copies. This book is dedicated to agitation in art forms and particularly in theatre and performance form. More than that, the author described a new form developed for mass agitation and education in entertaining form - 'costume evening'. Starting from discussion of pros and cons of such event the book continues with organization details (creating plan and promotion - "Costumes must present political, industrial and domestic topics"), recommendation list of topics, consultation, and goes to description of the event itself. Interesting section of the book called "We didn't forget our daily work" in which is listed all activities that were held at the club. Overall, an amusing yet informative edition on one of the forms of agitation and propaganda in the early Soviet Union which included elements of theatre and performance. Not in the Worldcat. Pope Pius XI. (Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti)
c. 1930. Rare hand-illuminated apostolic benediction signed by Pope Pius XI with a circular portrait of him. The blessing in elaborate script reads, "Most Holy Father, Margaret, Katherine, Regina, John, Leo and Charles Lougrhan, humbly prostrate at the feet of Your Holiness beg one special blessing." Signed by the pope at the conclusion, "Pope PP. XI." In near fine condition. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 24 inches by 19 inches. Uncommon signed by Pope Pius XI. Pope Pius XI was head of the Catholic Church from February 6, 1922 until his death in 1939. The first sovereign of Vatican City from its establishment as an independent state, Pope Pius XI issued numerous encyclicals warning of the dangers of capitalistic greed, communism, and anti-clericalism. Upon his death in 1939, he was buried in the Papal Grotto of Saint Peter's Basilica; during the excavation to create his tomb, ancient burial grounds were uncovered which revealed bones now venerated as the bones of St. Peter. Bénédictus, Edouard; Yvanhoé Rambosson (Preface by)
Paris: Vincent, Fréal et Cie, 1930. First edition. Loose_leaf. vg. Folio. [4]pp. (title and text), 15 loose plates, as issued, with the original portfolio missing. Title page in green and black lettering. Published shortly after the artist's death, "Relais 1930" is a striking homage to the art and genius of Edouard Bénédictus, a French painter, writer, composer and chemist who started his career in the Art Nouveau period. This collection contains 15 vivid pochoir plates featuring 42 Art Nouveau designs which display an imaginative geometric elaboration of fields of pure color, punctuated in places with abstract floral motifs. Each plate measures 18 1/2 x 14 1/2" (pochoir illustration 14 2/8 x 11"), some of which are protected with a loose tissue-guard. Plates #10 &11 are stuck together via the original printing ink. Minor foxing to margins of a few plates, not affecting images. Minor smudging to the back of a few plates. In overall very good condition. About the author: Edouard Bénédictus (1879-1930) was a painter, writer, composer and chemist who started his career in the Art Nouveau period. However, he was greatly receptive to the stylistic evolution started in 1912 and that became Art Deco. Appreciated for his portfolios "Variations" in 1923 and "Nouvelles variations" in 1928, he became one the most famous protagonists of the floral Art Deco. He played a special role in the Pavillion de l'Ambassade Française in the Exposition des Arts Decoratifs in Paris in 1925. He worked with the most famous designers in this period, especially with Andre Groult for whom he creat … [Click Below for Full Description]
