regarding her work The Prison, the first says that "Sir H. Wood tells me he has suggested to you that I shd conduct 'The Prison' at one of your concerts next season. I think, judging by recent experience you will get a good house ... thousands know my writings - I get letters about them almost weekly & for articles very good fees, bad tho' the times are. This it is (I believe) that has made my concert at the last 2 festivals I conducted at the one with the largest financial return ... people come from curiosity knowingmy literary work. And recently at Torquay I was the only composer encored there thro' out the week! I tell you this not from boasting but to show you that if the musical press has never given me much encouragement, the public is always exactly of reverse tendency ... if you do the Prison I would suggest a fee according to the attendance at the Concert. I know the Prison is perhaps the best thing I ever did & if asked to wait (as with the Mass) 33 years for a second performance I can only hope to 'draw' as a centenarian conductor - or perhaps as a ghost! ..." she continues that she doesn't want to charge a large fee but would like to get it organised before Christmas, 3 sides 8vo., 30th May, the second letter is hoping that "your committee will select the Prison - Mr Benet (who I think will be doing a fine performance ere long ) was yesty saying that provincial committees don't realise that what makes the attendance at concerts where where I conduct so good (altho the Musical Press has never spoilt me) is my books & articles which appeal to the public ... … [Click Below for Full Description]

NP: NP, 1930. First edition. Oblong Quarto. Broadside. Original tan broadside with black lettering, protected by modern mylar. Undocumented, anti-Semite poster without credits. Though the publisher remains unknown it is likely that a so-called Hungarist group could be responsible, possibly a precursor to Ferenc Szllasi's Arrow Cross Party. The poster mixes anti-Semite and anti-Bolshevik rhetoric and refers to the Hungarian Soviet Republic as a Jewish-Bolshevik conspiracy. The Text of the broadside in English Translation: When he says: I'm Hungarian, he smiles derisively. When he claims to be a Christian, he rubs his hand with satisfaction and guffaws joyously over good business, as the cross is a brilliant business for him. A converted Jew is nothing but a wolf in sheep's clothing. Today the Jew is nationalistic but when a catastrophe hits Hungary, he jumps out of bed like the fleas: Vilmos Bhm* and Pollk (pagan) Napoleon.** The Jewish race has two faces: The Szamuely-face,*** who jags his dagger into the hated Christian, and in case he doesn't succeed, he changes to the Vzsonyi-face,**** stating that we're all brothers, urging to stay calm. You, Hungarians should finally learn, that dogs will not become a bacon! Text in Hungarian. Light wear along edges of broadside. Overall in very good condition. * Vilmos Bhm, the People's Commissar of War during the Hungarian Soviet Republic ** Pollk (Pogny) Napoleon, Jzsef/Joseph Pogny, also known as John Pepper, born as Schwartz. The poster unambiguously aims to refer to his Polish-Jewish origins, and Napoleon to his … [Click Below for Full Description]

Comprises 26 plates (26 x 22 cm) with 31 costume drawings painted in water colours with notes and numbers in pencil. The notes refer to the operetta characters and possibly Swedish artists who were famous at that time. A label "Theaterkunst Hermann J. Kaufmann" pasted on the reverse of the plates. Housed in a specially-made box.The pasticcio "Walzer aus Wien" arranged by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and with music by Johann Strauss (father and son) was first performed at the Vienna Stadttheater in 1930. The following year it was restaged in London as "Waltzes from Vienna" and a French version entitled "Valses de Vienne" was produced in Paris. The successful operetta was based on the rivalry between Strauss the elder and Strauss the younger. We have not been able to find any Swedish performance but this set of drawings listing Swedish artists indicates that such a plan existed, even if it was never implemented. We don't know who made the drawings but the Kaufmann labels suggest that they used to belong to them. Theaterkunst Hermann Kaufmann, founded in Berlin 1907, became the world's biggest costume house for theatre, opera, and later also film productions. In the 1930s the company expanded internationally but in 1936 Hermann Kaufmann had to sell it due to political pressure.

[Matsuoka Tokikata; Honma Hyakuri]
[Tokyo]: [Yoshikawa K bunkan], 1930. Cloth. Near fine. 8vo (6-1/4 x 8-3/4"), burgundy cloth-covered boards stamped in gilt on the upper board and spine, gilt top-edge, printed matching cardstock slipcase; unpaginated, but 84 leaves hinged at the spine, all but the title page printed either recto or verso (primarily facing pages), with hundreds of elaborately printed full-color epaulettes adorning the majority of the pages. Covers and endpapers a bit rubbed, gilt titling a bit faded, rear hinge just barely starting, the slipcase somewhat worn and rubbed, but the overall very clean and bright. The sumptuous 1930 reprinting of this catalogue of traditional Japanese armor-lacing patterns, first published in 1833 (and reprinted in 1901). Originally issued in two volumes, reissued here as one. Matsuoka (1764-1840) was a samurai and scholar of the royal court; Honma (1784-1854) was his disciple. They devoted themselves to recording the history of y sokukojitsu (the ceremonies, manners, and customs of the royal court and military households). The colors and lacing patterns of the epaulettes (or shoulder ribbons) on display here provided a "code" as to rank, fealty, clan, and more. "Shouko Gaishoku Ichiran" is sometimes translated as "A Grammar of Color of Ancient Armor" or "List of Colors of Samurai Epaulettes" or other variations on the theme.

Carolyn Keene
Grosset & Dunlap, U.S., 1930. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Russell H. Tandy (illustrator). 1st Edition. Nice copy of a first edition of the first ever Nancy Drew book written, like most of the early titles in the series, by Mildred Wirt Benson, the first of many Stratemeyer Syndicate writers to use the Carolyn Keene name. All first edition points in evidence: only three titles listed on copyright page, title lettering on front board outlined in black, no silhouette illustration, plain white endpapers, frontispiece and three other full page illustrations printed on glossy paper. The arrangement of the publisher's ads at the rear of the book reveal this to be the second issue: Farah 1930B-2. Spine a little faded, the blue boards are mildly marked, edges slightly browned with just a few margins showing some unobtrusive brown spots. There's a name and date on front endpaper. A very good, tidy copy of this scarce item. [Attributes: First Edition]

Sybil was one of the reigning queens of the world of interior decorating (almond greens, opaque yellow), as was her great rival and Chelsea neighbour Syrie Maugham (white, white, white).
