Moscow: State Publishing House of the RSFSR. Condition: Müeller), with light overall wear and dustiness to wrappers, oxidation to staples, and slight mustiness; faint, shallow staining to gutters of 2 issues and right margins of 1 issue; nos.4 and 5-6 (double issue) each with a small chip to rear wrappers; overall and unrestored, Very Good+ run. The first six issues of this landmark Soviet art magazine, issued from 1930 to 1941 to celebrate the achievements of the first two Five Year Plans and (through various foreign-language editions) to propagandize the stark contrast between the vibrant Soviet economy during this period and the stagnation of Western economies under capitalism. "All the visual strategies of the propaganda photobooks, designed by Lissitsky, Rodchenko and others...were developed in USSR in Construction, one of the most beautifully produced magazines of the twentieth century" (Parr-Badger, The Photobook, I:148). The present issues are dedicated to the subjects of oil production, electric energy and centrifuges, textile workers, ship building, railroads, construction, and the production of field machinery. Extensively illustrated throughout with half-tone photographs of subjects for each themed issue. An attractive group; issues from the first year of the magazine are notably uncommon. Five folio issues (42cm); printed card wrappers, stapled; 48; 32; 32; 48; 48pp; illus; text is in English and German. Issue No.1 stated "Second Edition", remaining issues in the First Edition. GROTH, John (1908-1988)
ca 1930-35. Condition: Nice condition: See description. A spectacular large print demonstrating Groth's early mastery of aquatint technique -- a Bowery street scene peopled with the ghost-like figures of Depression-era down-and-outers, typical of Groth's social-realist work during the Great Depression. Though best remembered as a wartime sketch-artist and book illustrator (he produced a number of titles for The Limited Editions Club, including the widely-praised LEC edition of Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front ), Groth began his career as a printmaker and cartoonist very much in the social-realist mold, publishing some of his earliest work in such left-wing forums as The New Masses and PM. He was also the first Art Director at Esquire, which was founded in 1933. Groth's mastery as a printmaker is on display in these early works, which manage to convey a simultaneous sense of urgency and delicacy which would become the hallmark of his battlefield sketches made during WW2 and the Korean War. Groth's Depression-era work has remained scarce in the marketplace, with only a few examples of his social-realist prints at auction in the past twenty years. The current example is from Groth's personal archive, which we acquired in 2013. Original aquatint. Sheet size 49.5cm x 67.5cm (ca 19-3/4" x 26-1/2"); image area 45cm x 61cm. Signed and numbered (1/50) in pencil, lower right, titled lower left. Slight soil to verso and to margins; a strong, clear and clean impression.

LINCOLN, Edwin Hale (1848-1938)
Pittsfield, Massachusetts, 1930. 3 volumes, folio. (14 x 11 inches). Manuscript title in each vol., manuscript preface in vol. 1), and manuscript lists of plates in each vol. with both Latin nomenclature and common names. 81 platinum photographs, each tipped to cream Japanese vellum and mounted to larger gray sheets, each image captioned in manuscript. Contemporary red half morocco and red cloth covered boards, spines with raised bands in six compartment, lettered in the second and fourth, the others panelled in gilt A unique photographically-illustrated work on the orchids of the eastern United States. This remarkable collection of photographs reveals Lincoln's vision, his skill as a photographer using a large camera and his superb craftsmanship producing difficult and time-consuming platinum prints. Unsurprisingly, Lincoln developed strong connections with the American Arts & Crafts movement, and his work appeared in several issues of Gustave Stickley's The Craftsman. Lincoln was a pioneer and his photographs can be viewed as elegant examples of the modernist photographs produced in the 1920s and 1930s by Imogen Cunningham, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, and other members of the loosely associated Group f/64. A proto-conservationist, Lincoln was pains-taking in his attempts to photograph each specimen without further endangering the species: with this in mind he would carefully dig up the selected plant, wrap the roots in moss, and return to his studio. Here he replanted his finds, allowing them to continue to grow until they reached their peak. He then took the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Condition: Very Good +. Very impressive early 20th century album (possibly 1930-31) of over 100 original mounted photographs depicting local bridges in various states of construction. Most of the black-and-white photographs are 3 1/2"x5 1/2". The album, an oblong octavo, is string-tied in its olive-green cloth. Most of the photos appear to focus on Connecticut bridges and the album was probably compiled by H.C. Orr, the Resident Engineer of Cornwall Bridge, CT. (A tipped-in May 1930 letter to him from the Commissioner of the CT Highway Department strongly suggests so). Also includes interesting ephemera discussing some of the most prominent bridge buiders of the day and some of the earliest covered bridges built in CT, such as the Lewis Bridge and the Hart Bridge (now known as the Cornwall and West Cornwall Bridges respectively). Also discusses the much-loved covered bridge in Kent, built in 1858 over the Housatonic River, and covered bridges in Ansonia (also spanning the Housatonic) and Seymour.

1930. This Book is the real thing. I have had it for over 15 years and it was given to me by my great aunt who had it for many years after traveling to China in the 1930s. One can tell just by looking at the pictures that it is clearly an amazingly painstakingly painted I brush, but you have to look so closely to tell that it's actually painted. There is only one other book like this in current market for sale. Their asking price is $3000. And their book that I found for sale was much more "yellowed" than mine. This book is in pristine mint condition. The only way that you can tell that it's an old book is by the yellowing of its pages which happens to any old books. If you are going to look up information on it be sure to please the correct title in the search field: which is "the heroes of the period of the three kingdoms and this is an accordion style book, hardcover and a cherished family piece, but I'm okay with parting with it after having it and carefully enjoying it always using gloves. It's a RARE FIND.

GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFT-DESCRIPTION OF THIS HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE BOOK BELOW!. MOBY DICK BY HERMAN MELVILLE C.1930 Item Description: Random House, New York, 1930. Book Condition: VERY GOOD/VERY GOOD+. First Edition. A stunningly lovely copy of Rockwell Kent's illustrated "Moby Dick," published shortly after the three volume Lakeside Press Edition. Book is beautiful, bright and square, with all gilt BEAUTIFUL and intact for the most part (see pics). A book store stamp to front paste down, but a superior copy nonetheless, "Quite a rare find" for this book, which is often in dismal condition. Considered to be one of the most famous illustrated books of the 20th century and a towering example of Rockwell Kent's illustrations. Much has been written about this Melville's masterpiece, but quite simply, this is the most significant work of American literature to come out of the 19th century. Arguments might be made for "The Scarlett Letter," "Huckleberry Finn," Uncle Tom's Cabin," and maybe a few others, but none of them really measures up to the towering genius of "Moby Dick." "'Moby Dick' is not a sea-story - one could not read it as such - it is a medley of noble impassioned thoughts born of the deep, pervaded by a grotesque human interest, owing to the contrast it suggests between the rough realities of the cabin and the forecastle, and the phantasms of men conversing in rich poetry, and strangely moving and acting in that dim weather-worn Nantucket whaler."The corners are bumped but still retain sharpness (see pics), top and bottom of spine slightly bumped, spine tight with all page … [Click Below for Full Description]

D.H. Lawrence
London: D.H. Lawrence - Love Among the Haystacks - Nonesuch Press, 1930 - 1st Edition / 1st Printing - 1st edition, one of 1600 numbered copies. This example with serious insect damage to the boards and the text block, light shelf wear, and tanning/foxing to the handmade paper of the block. What makes this copy special is the inscription on the front fly page which reads: "Achsaw & Earl Brewster / (From Frieda, Vence April 1931)". The Frieda who inscribed this posthumous work was Frieda Lawrence, the wife of D.H. Lawrence. This title is inscribed to Earl Brewster and his wife Achsaw. Brewster is a well regarded painter and the couple is well known for their close friendship with the Lawrences. This copy was inscribed from Vence, France where D.H. Lawrence passed away at the Villa Robermond in March of 1930. This edition was limited to 1600 copies of which 550 were to be for sale in the United States. As can be seen, this copy is not numbered but instead "Out of Series" as it was a gift from Lawrence's widow to their family friends the Brewsters. It seems unlikely that a much better or more important association to the author will surface with an inscription from his widow. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

London; Edinburgh: Macmillan and Co; Thomas Nelson and Sons. New Series 'Mind' was established in 1876 by the Scottish philosopher Alexander Bain (University of Aberdeen) with his colleague and former student George Croom Robertson (University College London) as editor-in-chief. With the death of Robertson in 1891, George Stout took over the editorship and began a 'New Series'. The current editor is Thomas Baldwin (University of York). In the first issue, Robertson wrote;"Now, if there were a journal that set itself to record all advances in psychology, and gave encouragement to special researches by its readiness to publish them, the uncertainty hanging over the subject could hardly fail to be dispelled. Either psychology would in time pass with general consent into the company of the sciences, or the hollowness of its pretensions would be plainly revealed. Nothing less, in fact, is aimed at in the publication of Mind than to procure a decision of this question as to the scientific standing of psychology." Many famous essays have been published in Mind by such figures as Charles Darwin, J. M. E. McTaggart and Noam Chomsky. Three of the most famous, arguably, are Lewis Carroll's "What the Tortoise Said to Achilles" (1895), Bertrand Russell's "On Denoting" (1905), and Alan Turing's "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" (1950), in which he first proposed the Turing test. First Edition. Signed and inscribed by the author, Claude Roger-Marx to French-American actor Charles Boyer. The translation: "To Charles Boyer, who knows that true greatness lies only in simplicity. To Charles Boyer, without whom Simili has not been Simili. With fond friendship and admiration, Claude R.M." From a total edition of 280 numbered copies, this is one of 225 printed on fine Lafuma wove paper. Paperbound in original printed wrappers, entirely uncut and unopened. Quarto, 6 3/4" x 8 1/2". Illustrated with seven original drypoints by Pierre Bonnard. Very good plus to near fine copy enclosed in a custom clamshell box. Charles Boyer starred in the original 1924 Paris premiere of the play and obviously formed a close bond with the author Claude Roger-Marx. Boyer earned a degree in philosophy at the Sorbonne before turning to a career as an actor. His first big Hollywood break was a very small part of a chauffeur to Jean Harlow in Red-Headed Woman (1932), and he went on to appear in a French adaptation of Liliom directed by the great Fritz Lang. Near fine copy enclosed in a handsome morocco and cloth clamshell box. [LAWRENCE, T.E.]. TOMLINSON, H.L. All Our Yesterdays. London: Heinemann, 1930. First Edition. This copy belonged to T.E. Lawrence, with the Clouds Hill book label. This is the limited edition copy number 1019 of 1025 signed by H.L. Tomlinson (the last 25 were for Tomlinson's use). Very good plus copy enclosed in a handsome morocco and cloth clamshell box. In a February 19th, 1930 published letter to editor A.S. Frere, Lawrence remarked on his enthusiasm for Tomlinson selecting him for "...my entirely uncritical admiration, as man and nature and mind - and particularly pen...I am a pluralist, a whole-hogger, in all his words and works and 'All Our Yesterdays' is a big thing among them." A recorded letter to Lawrence, dated March 19th, 1930, noted that in All My Yesterdays, my ghosts had to be laid. I was thinking of you, often enough, when I was writing it. There is a notebook here with reflections from the 'Pillars'. I pondered that book of yours...There you were, once on a time, no doubt of it, involved in a mess you didn't make. The evil that others had done caught you, & you faced it for them - was crucified, if you like. That was I wanted to show...." Condition: Very Good. This rare item is in very good condition see pictures. Alfred Wertheimer was born in Germany in 1930, came to America and settled in Brooklyn as a young boy. He took an early interest in architecture and design, which led him to Cooper Union, from which he graduated in 1951. In the spring of 1956, a series of commercial assignments for RCA Records led to a shoot of a newly signed singer named Elvis Presley. Instantly impressed, Wertheimer devoted four months of his own time to intensely shadow the young star. The result would be the most intimate and candid look at the future legend ever recorded. In 1956, a twenty-one-year-old Elvis Presley was at the beginning of his remarkable and unparalleled career and photographer Alfred Wertheimer was asked by Presley's new label, RCA Victor, to photograph the rising star. With unimpeded access to the young performer, Wertheimer was able to capture the unguarded and everyday moments in Elvis' life during that crucial year, a year that took him from Tupelo, Mississippi to the silver screen, and to the verge of international stardom and his crowning as "The King of Rock 'n' Roll." As Alfred Wertheimer photographed Elvis during 1956, and again in 1958, he created classic images that are spontaneous, unrehearsed and completely without artifice. Wertheimer's photographs of Elvis are extraordinary and he appears almost ethereal, whether reading a newspaper while waiting for a cab, or washing his hands during one of his many train trips. After 1958 and Elvis' induction into the army, the world seemingly forgot about We … [Click Below for Full Description]
