HERSCHU (pseud.) [SCHULTZ, Herbert].
1930. Gouache and watercolour heightened with gum-arabic on very dark green card, annotated in pale ink with body type below, numbered '93', in upper left corner, German copyright stamp on verso, 27 x 42cm (10½ x 16½ in). Finished in two-tone dark and light brown, with matching solid disc wheels, picked out against a silhouetted trees, this handsome 4-door limousine would have represented the pinnacle of Frankfurt motor manufacturer, Adler's aspirations of entering the luxury car market. Better known for more modest vehicles, this was to be powered by an 8-cylinder engine, a development from their existing 6-cylinder model, itself an evolution of their staple 4-cylinder workhorse. Introduced in 1928, the Standard 8 fell foul of the global stock market crash a year later, and by the early 1930s, Adler had withdrawn from what had been the more affluent end of the market, to concentrate on its more utilitarian base. Although larger in scale than the rest of Adler's range, the Standard 8 had always fallen short of the true luxury offered by the likes of Mercedes, although this was clearly reflected in its far more modest price. Founded by Alexis Kellner (1880-1953) in 1910, in Berlin, the eponymous Alexis Kellner AG coachbuilding company's stylish automobile bodywork designs were immediately successful. This was demonstrated by the number of orders he received at the International Motor Show, in Berlin, in 1911. Kellner was noted for his inventiveness of small details, such as a concealed handle behind the driver's seat for quickly and easily raising and lowering the car's roof … [Click Below for Full Description]

1930. Gouache and watercolour heightened with gum-arabic on very dark green card, annotated in pale ink with body type below, numbered '73', in upper left corner, German copyright label on verso, 27 x 42 cm (10½ x 16½ in). Finished in warm grey with matching solid disc wheels, presented against a silhouette of the Packard factory, this grand 4-door cabriolet was one of the more luxurious variant designs around the underpinnings of the company's straight-8 engine and drive train. It evolved from the Single Eight, so-called as it replaced the earlier V-12 known as the Double Six. Founded in 1899 by brothers James and William Packard, the eponymous company was not only one of the pioneers of North American motor manufacturing, but soon gained a global reputation for luxury and smoothness. The marque had been selling more models abroad than its competitors in the 1920s, culminating with selling twice as many as its closest rival by 1930. It is little wonder its the Packard received the attention of such creative luxury coachbuilders as Kellner. Kellner was noted for his inventiveness of small details, such as a concealed handle behind the driver's seat for quickly and easily raising and lowering the car's roof, concealed bonnet hinges, for aesthetic as well as aerodynamic reasons, and a suitca … [Click Below for Full Description]

ATGET, Eugene
New York: E. Weyhe, 1930. First Edition. Quarto. Two loose stamps from the Bibliothèque Nationale laid in. A fine association copy, SIGNED by Berenice Abbott and inscribed to novelist and screenwriter Ferdinand Rehyer: "Dear Ferd Reyher / I took the photograph of / Atget in the winter of 1927 in / my studio at 44 rue du Bac, Paris. / With the horrible reproductions in / this book, I had as you know / nothing to do. Let's hope we can / still get Atget reproduced in a / manner he deserves. / Berenice Abbott". Inscribed around 1936, Abbott sent this copy along with about 50 of her prints from Atget's negatives to novelist and screenwriter Ferdinand Rehyer, who had offered to help her publish a monograph on Atget with better reproductions. While that project never came to fruition, Rehyer arranged an exhibition of Atget's work at Addison Gallery in 1948. Berenice Abbott met Atget in 1926 and spent the better part of forty years shepherding his archive, and ensuring he received the wide audience he deserved. This is the first and best monograph on Atget-despite Abbot's misgivings about print quality-published on the occasion of his solo exhibition at Weyhe Gallery in New York, organized by Berenice Abbott. One of the consensus highlights of 20th century photo literature, and the template from which all great Paris photobooks have come. (Parr / Badger, v1, 127; Roth 60-61; Open Book 90-91; Auer 154). Light wear to the head and heel of the spine at the right joint, thin short stress tears to the top fore edge of about 25 pages, several unassuming pencil notations in Rehyer's hand; … [Click Below for Full Description]

Marcel Breuer
Berlin: c. 1930. Marcel Breuer. A nice-sized pencil-on-trace by Marcel Breuer, the great Hungarian-born Modernist architect and furniture designer (1902-1981) who was a student at the Bauhaus in Weimar and who, at an early age, was handpicked by Walter Gropius to head the Bauhaus' Carpentry Shop. His "modular" sketch measues 16 1/2" wide by 11 3/4" tall and features his Berlin studio stamp ("Marcel Breuer Architekt") at the lower right corner. The sketch has held up nicely. There are 2 even vertical folds and very light creasing and wear but the drawing remains strong, clean and vivid. Circa 1930-1933, when the Bauhaus had been relocated in Berlin. Near Fine.

Created by Huntley, Boorne & Stevens
Reading, England: Huntley & Palmers, 1930. Unbound. Very good. Two wonderful examples of Huntley & Palmers famous figural biscuit tins (i.e., cookie tins in Americanese). Multi-book tins are titled Literature in Huntley & Palmer references. This multi-book tin measures approximately 6.5" x 6.25" x 4.75" and is in the shape of eight bound books strapped together by a belt. All the books are by different authors. Company information "Huntley & Plamers Biscuits / Reading & London" is stamped on the base. Almost no wear. This is an example of the first Literature tin produced by the company. Its included 'books' reflect some of the most popular authors and titles of the time: Thomas Macauley's History of England (the full set is represented by one volume), John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, a collection of works by Robert Burns, Charles Dicken's The Pickwick Papers, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, Samuel Smiles's Self Help, and a volume of Shakespeare's works. Interestingly, only Smiles's Self Help, with its emphasis upon hard work as the foundation of creativity and success, is almost unheard of in today's world. Literature tins proved to be one of the company's most popular tins and were produced, in ten different variations until 1924. The single-book tin measures approximately 10" x 7" x 1.5". The tin is the shape of a book with a hand-tooled cover. Almost no wear. This tin is often misattributed as being based a book in the British Library, Het Boek Der Gebeden. Actually, it is a facsimile of a Grolier design of a book … [Click Below for Full Description]
