Peking, China: 1930. Very good, with some foxing. Fung, H.K.The Shop Signs of PekingPeking: Chinese Painting Association of Peking, 1931. 18 leaves, 10 x 13.25 inches, oblong, in original string-tied brocade boards with mounted paper label. A few spots of loss to the brocade, offsetting from silver paint to adjacent pages, light soiling to title page, all else very good. Printed in an edition of just 100 copies, this volume contains 101 hand-colored illustrations with captions in English and Chinese, translating the purely pictorial signs into written form. Historically, Chinese shops used pictorial signs due to low literacy rates in the local population. Although certain aspects of the signs were fairly universal (depicting the articles for sale), as the author explains in the preface, "the shop signs of different parts of China var[ied] according to the customs of the people," especially when the items being sold were not easily represented by pictures. In these cases, centuries-old local traditions prevailed. Fung writes: "The wine flag can be recognized from a great distance, when one wants to satisfy his thirst, he will not have to strain his optic nerves to get what he wants; they are as conspicuous as the barber poles in Western Countries....The only explanation that I can give for the existence of these pictorial signs is that in the former times the percentage of illiteracy among the people was very low. I am sure with the establishment of the new public school system that most of the Chinese people can read the written language of the country. Therefore it is plai … [Click Below for Full Description]

G. E. Moore
London; Edinburgh: Macmillan and Co; Thomas Nelson and Sons. New Series 'Mind' was established in 1876 by the Scottish philosopher Alexander Bain (University of Aberdeen) with his colleague and former student George Croom Robertson (University College London) as editor-in-chief. With the death of Robertson in 1891, George Stout took over the editorship and began a 'New Series'. The current editor is Thomas Baldwin (University of York). In the first issue, Robertson wrote;"Now, if there were a journal that set itself to record all advances in psychology, and gave encouragement to special researches by its readiness to publish them, the uncertainty hanging over the subject could hardly fail to be dispelled. Either psychology would in time pass with general consent into the company of the sciences, or the hollowness of its pretensions would be plainly revealed. Nothing less, in fact, is aimed at in the publication of Mind than to procure a decision of this question as to the scientific standing of psychology." Many famous essays have been published in Mind by such figures as Charles Darwin, J. M. E. McTaggart and Noam Chomsky. Three of the most famous, arguably, are Lewis Carroll's "What the Tortoise Said to Achilles" (1895), Bertrand Russell's "On Denoting" (1905), and Alan Turing's "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" (1950), in which he first proposed the Turing test. Adams, Ansel E., and Mary H. Austin
San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1930. [6] preliminary pages followed by [14]pp. of text and twelve original mounted photographs, printed on Dessonville paper by Ansel Adams, various sizes to 9 x 6 1/2 inches, each with a corresponding caption leaf. Large folio. Publisher's half tan morocco and cloth, spine with raised bands, marbled endpapers. Light spotting to covers, light wear. Very good. In a morocco box. From an edition limited to 108 copies (this is copy number 92) signed by Mary Austin, containing magnificent photographs by Ansel Adams. Possibly the most famous of modern photographic works on the West, TAOS PUEBLO was a collaboration between the young photographer, Ansel Adams, and one of the most evocative writers on the Southwest, Mary Austin. An elegant design by the Grabhorn Press provides a counterpoint to Adams' photographs of the adobe Pueblo. The book distilled the romance and naturalism that many Americans found in the Indian pueblos of New Mexico, and defined the style that was to make Adams the most popular photographer of the American West. "It was at Taos and Santa Fe that Ansel Adams first saw the Southwest. The time was the spring of 1927....His visit resulted in a Grabhorn Press book now of legendary rarity. It includes Ansel Adams' photographs and Mary Austin's essay on Taos Pueblo. Genius has never been more happily wed. Nowhere else did she write prose of such precise and poetical authority....Their TAOS PUEBLO is a true and beautiful book by two consummate artists" - Adams. Produced in a small edition, the book is difficult to obtain today. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ruth, Babe and Lou Gehrig
Spalding Official League Special baseball, signed by Yankee legends, Babe Ruth on the sweetspot and Lou Gehrig on the west panel. Lindenhurst NY Oct 18 1930 appears on the north panel in an unknown hand. For the fishing village of Lindenhurst, Long Island, this 1930 exhibition game with Ruth and Gehrig (avid fishermen themselves) was regarded as the greatest sporting event in local history--and it remains so to this day. First, the Yankee legends were honored with a parade fit for kings. Then, more than 4,000 star-struck spectators gathered at Meridale Baseball Park for a contest between their Lindenhurst ball club (managed by Babe's fishing buddy Addie Klein) and the Ruth/Gehrig all-star squad. What ultimately stole all the headlines was the Bambino's ninth-inning moon shot, reported here by the Lindenhurst Star newspaper: "The second pitch was shoulder-high, and that's where Ruth likes 'em. He took a healthy swing and 'crack' went the bat as the ball went sailing out over the rightfielder's head! The ball landed just in back of the Old Homestead Inn, corner Wellwood Avenue and Montauk Highway, and was said to be the longest drive ever seen on the home grounds...The most famous ballplayer in the world just grinned as he trotted at a slow pace around to third base where he halted, not wishing to continue on to home plate, apparently satisfied with the triple." (In addition to Ruth's gesture of sportsmanship and humility, Gehrig is said to have donated his financial compensation to the Lindenhurst team.) CHINA - WOMEN)
Shanghai. No date. Ca. 1930s. Color poster, 23 3/4 x 17 inches on sheet 30 1/2 x 21 inches. Dampstain spot to middle of the upper edge well outside image area, a few short repaired edge tears, faint soiling to lower left edge, single pinhole to upper and lower edge, soft creasing to outer right edge, all well outside image area. Single pin sized hole to lower left image. Overall, good to very good condition with wide margins and clean, bright image. This vintage poster is of the "Shanghai beauty" tradition from the 1920s-1930s. It features an attractive young Chinese woman in stylish bathing attire sitting with her legs dipped in a river. She is surrounded by a verdant landscape filled with flowers, with a large majestic stag (a symbol of virility and happiness). "No. 15" is printed below image. Text in lower margin in Chinese. The printing technique seems to be a mixture of lithography, with possibly some more mechanical processes. A strikingly appealing image.
