Size: Tram poster (cca. 17 x 24 cm). This original vintage painted book cover artwork was created for a chemistry book during the 1920s ndash 1930s The creator artist is not known but it is visible that this piece represents a rare tone in early Hungarian poster art The composition is artistically blurred operating with several typical elements of a chemistry class A Bunsen burner is depicted to be on a retort is being held above its red light and several test tubes appear to the right of the retort The motifs are captured as light patches with gentle silhouettes in front of a deep black background painted with fast intense brush work The typography is placed at the bottom of the composition the title appears in blue thin slanting elegant letters The usage of black and white red and blue colours creates an elementally concentrated character while the energetic moves used and the airy spots visible in the colouring contribute to a passionate atmosphere There are even some drops of the bright red paint on the lower part of the composition ndash even if it was not intended this gesture gives an extra soulfulness to the design Moreover it points forward in time to the direction of the later Abstract Expressionism in the middle of the century All these characteristics reveal an expressionist style with a lyrical character which was quite rare in Hungarian art of the period Internationally Expressionism was one of the earliest Avant garde tendencies in the beginning of the 20th century which came into being in Germany Several artistic groups were formed later to become separated … [Click Below for Full Description]

The book also proved to be a major test case for laws of freedom of expression: "Forced underground by censors this was a cryptoclassic already before it was read, a subversive colossus" (Norman Sherry, James Joyce, Ulysses, 2nd edition). The first hundred or so in this copy have been neatly annotated with critical notes in the margins and chapters headings, with apt quotations, notes on the use of location, symbolism, structure, and etymology, and references to the series of excerpts published in the London periodical, The Egoist, in 1919, until production ceased when the publisher was unable to find a printer willing to set type for the other chapters. Karl Blossfeldt
Natur og Kultur. Fine. Pristine and clan plates inside. A true collector?s item. NB: Konstformer I Naturen (Art Froms in Nature). Photographs by Karl Blossfeldt. Text by Axel Romdahl and C. Skottsberg. Bokförlaget Natur och Kultur, Stockholm, 1930. XIV pp. + plates. Tall quarto. First Swedish edition. Decorative boards and endpapers. Three-quarter leather (spine and corners) binding. Debossed spine decoration with gilt title. Upper edges gilt. 120 gravure reproductions. A rare find!! This is the extremely rare Swedish edition of Blossfeldt's much-loved Urformen der Kunst (Art Forms in Nature). Unlike the better known German, English, and French editions that are bound in green cloth, this 1930 Swedish edition is richly bound in three-quarter leather (spine and corners). It contains the same 120 plates, also printed rich gravure. Blossfeldt was a university teacher and used his photographs to teach formal art studies at the Royal School of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin. He photographed plants systematically with a 13x18cm view camera of his own construction. Immensely popular and profound in their simplicity, Blossfeldt's typology of plant forms drew parallels between nature and art. They were used as inspiration for jewelers, wrought iron workers, designers, craftsman, and artists worldwide. His vision is as fresh and unforgettable today as one could imagine it to be when this book was first published. As Parr and Badger point out, while Urformen der Kunst was "a key model for the 'typologies' school of contemporary German photography...it was not a Conceptual wor … [Click Below for Full Description]

KENT, Rockwell.) MELVILLE, Herman.
Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1930. 3 volumes, large quarto. Original black cloth, bevelled boards, titles and vignettes to spines in silver, abstract design and volume numbers within simple frame to front covers in silver, top edges black, others uncut. Housed in the original aluminium slipcase. Very light sunning to spines, some light offset from illustrations as usual. A fine copy. Wood-engravings throughout by Rockwell Kent. First Rockwell Kent edition, limited to 1,000 sets. Kent's rendering of Moby Dick is generally accepted to be finest edition of Melville's masterpiece, and is one of the great American illustrated books of the 20th century. In 1926, Rockwell Kent (1882-1971), then just beginning to establish his fame as an artist, was approached by R. R. Donnelley and Sons to illustrate a new edition of Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast. Kent demurred, suggesting Moby Dick instead. Kent was given complete freedom to design and illustrate the three-volume set. The resulting work, a masterpiece of book illustration and design, has been credited with reviving public interest in a sublime but difficult novel. Hutner & Kelly, Fine Printed Books 1900-1999, 22. CROWLEY, Aleister.) STEPHENSEN, Percy Reginald.
London: Mandrake Press Ltd., 1930. Octavo. Original blue paper wrappers printed in dark blue. Spine gently rolled and faded, a couple of marks to covers, edges rubbed and creased; a very good copy. First edition, first impression. An incredible association copy, presented by the author to the bohemian "Tiger-woman" Betty May, his inscription to the front free endpaper, "To Betty May with the author's love & regrets that it has been necessary to dig up all this stuff about Cefalù & Aleister (the old Beast 666) but they really did exaggerate much more than necessary (anyway, Aleister met his match in Betty! Beast versus tiger-woman.)" [Stephensen using Crowley's stylistically phallic 'A's' throughout the inscription]. The work was then additionally re-presented by May, with her inscription on the half-title, "To Annie, from Betty, & will you forgive the asking? They were rather drunk, B. M.". It is tempting, from this inscription, to suggest the recipient was Annie Kleinfeld, the landlady of the famous Fitzroy Tavern, headquarters of London's Bohemia, which was May's primary haunt at this time. Crowley and May first met in the autumn of 1922, when May and her third husband Frederick Charles Loveday, later Raoul Loveday, travelled to Cefalù, Sicily, to join Crowley's Abbey of Thelema. Crowley thought of Loveday as his "magical heir", but condemned Loveday's marriage to May, noting in his Confessions that Loveday had committed the "fatal folly of marrying a girl whom he had met in a sordid and filthy drinking den in Soho, called the Harlequin, which was frequented by self-style … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOLAND, John.
New York: Colonial Sales Corp., [c.1930]. 190 x 290 mm, two prints attached to form an envelope, between the two prints a sliding card with text to be viewed through cut-outs on each print. Some light stains (drink splashes perhaps), bumped to edges, closed tears to top and bottom of the envelope. Engraved by John Boland. First issue of this imaginative movable cocktail recipe display featuring humorous illustrations in the style of celebrated barroom artist John Held Jr. More commonly found in later coloured states, this is the rarely found first issue in the largest size and with different text to the insert, notably the tab changing from Pull Here in this issue to Pull Here / Hold Below in later issues, and the smaller lower margins of the envelope which allow for a larger image but require a perilous grip on the edge of the envelope for the user. The tears present in this copy serve to illustrate perfectly why these changes were quickly brought about in all later issues.

Hermen Melville
GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFT-DESCRIPTION OF THIS HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE BOOK BELOW! MOBY DICK BY HERMAN MELVILLE C.1930 Item Description: Random House, New York, 1930. Book Condition: VERY GOOD/VERY GOOD+. First Edition. A stunningly lovely copy of Rockwell Kent's illustrated "Moby Dick," published shortly after the three volume Lakeside Press Edition. Book is beautiful, bright and square, with all gilt BEAUTIFUL and intact for the most part (see pics). A book store stamp to front paste down, but a superior copy nonetheless, "Quite a rare find" for this book, which is often in dismal condition. Considered to be one of the most famous illustrated books of the 20th century and a towering example of Rockwell Kent's illustrations. Much has been written about this Melville's masterpiece, but quite simply, this is the most significant work of American literature to come out of the 19th century. Arguments might be made for "The Scarlett Letter," "Huckleberry Finn," Uncle Tom's Cabin," and maybe a few others, but none of them really measures up to the towering genius of "Moby Dick." "'Moby Dick' is not a sea-story - one could not read it as such - it is a medley of noble impassioned thoughts born of the deep, pervaded by a grotesque human interest, owing to the contrast it suggests between the rough realities of the cabin and the forecastle, and the phantasms of men conversing in rich poetry, and strangely moving and acting in that dim weather-worn Nantucket whaler."The corners are bumped but still retain sharpness (see pics), top and bottom of spine slightly bumped, spine tight with all pages … [Click Below for Full Description]
