Courbouleix, Léon.
Um 1930. Größe d. Radierungen: 14,5 x 9,5 cm. John Wisden
This 1930 Wisden Original Publisher's Hardback is in pretty good shape. It should be said that the book is an ex-library copy but the only evidence of that are one or two very unobtrusive stamps to the front advertisment page. I have attempted to illustrate one of these but as they are not coloured - just an impression stamp - it is difficult to show on the photograph. The front board is in pretty good shape, although it will be seen that there is a dent to the left about two thirds of the way down. The rear board has no issues. The spine is sturdy and the gilt bright, both to the front board and the spine. The yellow front and rear end papers are in nice condition and the contents are in excellent, unmarked condition, except for the library stamps referred to above. Overall, a nice copy. If intending to buy from outside the UK mainland please contact us before buying to ascertain methods and prices of postage. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Woolf, Virginia
London: The Hogarth Press, 1930. Signed by Author. First edition, limited issue of 250 copies, numbered and signed by the author. Publisher's quarter vellum and green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, gray marbled endpapers; in the original pictorial dust jacket illustrated by Vanessa Bell. A near fine copy, some light toning to extremities, otherwise very clean and bright, with the author's bold signature to the limitation page in purple ink; in a very good dust jacket, light toning to spine and some wear to extremities including a few small closed tears to edges and spine foot, as well as one through the middle of the spine panel, minor chipping to spine ends. Overall, a handsome, sturdy copy that presents well in the boldly illustrated dust jacket. On Being Ill is a contemplative essay that argues for the legitimacy of illness as a major theme in literature, along the lines of romance, hatred, and war. Indeed, Woolf herself suffered from various illnesses which often played a part in her writing. In the essay, she alludes to her own struggles to illustrate illness as an asset, sharpening the mind as it challenges the body. Notably, the essay first appeared in T.S. Eliot's The Criterion in 1925, later to be revised and published in book form for this limited edition of 250 copies, typeset by the author herself. Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. London; Edinburgh: Macmillan and Co; Thomas Nelson and Sons. New Series 'Mind' was established in 1876 by the Scottish philosopher Alexander Bain (University of Aberdeen) with his colleague and former student George Croom Robertson (University College London) as editor-in-chief. With the death of Robertson in 1891, George Stout took over the editorship and began a 'New Series'. The current editor is Thomas Baldwin (University of York). In the first issue, Robertson wrote;"Now, if there were a journal that set itself to record all advances in psychology, and gave encouragement to special researches by its readiness to publish them, the uncertainty hanging over the subject could hardly fail to be dispelled. Either psychology would in time pass with general consent into the company of the sciences, or the hollowness of its pretensions would be plainly revealed. Nothing less, in fact, is aimed at in the publication of Mind than to procure a decision of this question as to the scientific standing of psychology." Many famous essays have been published in Mind by such figures as Charles Darwin, J. M. E. McTaggart and Noam Chomsky. Three of the most famous, arguably, are Lewis Carroll's "What the Tortoise Said to Achilles" (1895), Bertrand Russell's "On Denoting" (1905), and Alan Turing's "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" (1950), in which he first proposed the Turing test. James Hanley | Richard Aldington (Introduction) | William Roberts (Illustrator)
Privately Printed by the Author, London, 1930. A privately printed limited edition of James Hanley's second literary work, The German Prisoner, a harsh novella set in the Western Front of World War I. Signed and inscribed on the limitation page by the author to Gilbert Fabes, bibliographer and bookseller, while Fabes was working as the manager of the Rare Book department at Foyles (Fabes authored the story of Foyles' Founding, The Romance of a Bookshop). ~One of ten presentation copies, bound in black cloth with gilt lettering, unlike the edition limited to 500 numbered copies in red cloth. With a signed, typewritten letter -- "Herewith a copy of the G.P. for yourself as promised" -- to Mr. Fabes laid in, complimenting him on the display of Foyles bookstore, with a short suggestion on how the book might be marketed. ~The superb frontispiece was engraved by William Roberts, a painter and premier English Cubist, who worked throughout the '20s on literary and portrait commissions such as these. Roberts served on the Western Front as well, as an official war artist for the British government; his wartime experiences produced truly gut-wrenching artwork, many now housed in the British Imperial War Museum. ~Introduction written by the controversial poet Richard Aldington, who also served in WWI, and whose characteristic bitterness about the war seeps into his passage. ~~Altogether a strongly affecting collaboration by three veterans of the 'War to End All Wars.' ~~Laid in as well is a typed description by a previous bookseller. [MARDRUS (Jacques-Charles), SCHMIED (François-Louis)]
». Minimes et rares piqûres, en bordu … [Click Below for Full Description]

With an introduction by Edwin Muir. A superior example, scarce in this condition. "The limits of Kafka's messianic vision correspond to the great skepticism with which he regarded the possibility of transcending the human predicament . . . At precisely the moment when his spirit is called, K. is asleep" (W. G. Sebald). Pale damp stain on the upper half throughout the book, couple of pages in the end with pink stains, t.p. with a small tear near the spine. Rare. One of 5000 copies. Cover design contains Melnikov's design of the second floor of the club. With 80 black and white designs, plans and photographs of workers' clubs including the most famous Moscow clubs: the Zuev Workers' Club, the Rusakov's Workers' Club, Kauchuk Factory Club. The book is dedicated to the massive phenomenon of Soviet workers' clubs which construction occurred in 1920s. Social, ideological, educational functions were laid upon them when created in the beginning of the century. This nature was very attractive for architects of the time sparking with ideas. Almost all architects of 1920s thought workers' clubs should stand out from everything else. Clubs built in 1927-1930s were avant-garde innovations created by famous Vesnin brothers, Melnikov, Golosov and others, and it's well-known since 1930s architecture and art in general had to take different turn towards socialist realism and central state planning (after all the clubs in 1920s were financed by unions). These clubs were last birds of free creative process, and today they are world famous and considered architectural monuments. In this edition the author examines the problems of modern architecture praising young constructivist architects who based their designs first of all on a function of a future building (and that's what Soviet architecture … [Click Below for Full Description]
