Henry Miller
Obelisk Press. Manuscript notebook - written in the early 1930's in Paris during the author's first (and greatest) creative period. All in Henry Miller's hand. Signed over to John Martin, famous publisher of Black Sparrow Press. Also includes a watercolor of Miller's depicting the unconscious. All pages are pictured. Spiral-bound sketchbook of French manufacture. 4to. The manuscript consists of essays and autobiographical notes and is illustrated with several original Miller watercolor drawings. Approximately 1,500 words. The title, written out on the front cover in Miller's hand, is "China," whose ancient culture held a lifelong fascination for Miller and to which he regularly returned for source material. Miller free-associates in the notebook in the style of The Tropics and other Paris works, melding diverse sources - metaphysics, science, mysticism and personal observation - into his now familiar, idiosyncratic Weltanschauung. There are lists of people, places, and events Miller recalled from his childhood; notes on the symbology of color and its relation to China; a full-page watercolor depicting Miller's conception of the Ranking unconscious, and numerous watercolor designs and patterns which Miller conceived as a visual complement to his deepest thoughts. In all, a fascinating look at an incipient artist wrestling with many of the themes which were to obsess him through the next half-century. [Attributes: First Edition]

The feature item of the archive is a binder of over 50 typescript poems with occasional pencil notations and corrections, in what we presume to be Gilliland's hand, accompanied by a typed (and incomplete) List of Publications. Robeson, Eslanda Goode
Harper & Brothers, New York, 1930. Third printing. Uncommon. Inscribed by both Paul Robeson and his wife, the author Eslanda Robeson in 1931 on half-title. Paul Robeson (1898-1976) was one of the major public figures of the 20th century. He was famous for his cultural accomplishments as a singer and actor, his athletic abilities, and his political activism. He became active in the Civil Rights Movement and other social justice campaigns. His sympathies for the Soviet Union and for communism, and his criticism of the United States government and its foreign policies, caused him to be blacklisted during the McCarthy era. In 1921 he married Eslanda Goode (1895-1965). She also had many accomplishments as an anthropologist, actor, civil rights activist, and author. The Robeson's had a complicated marriage, made more difficult by his multiple affairs. This biography of him was her first book. Supposedly Robeson was deeply angered by the way he was depicted as lazy, immature, and in need of her. Despite all, their marriage endured until her death in 1965. Bound in reddish-brown cloth with gilt titling to spine. Covers and spine are bumped, chipped, and worn. Interior pages very good with aging to paper and a few brown spots and chipped fore-edges. Several b&w illustrations of Robeson throughout. Despite flaws a very desirable copy with the two inscriptions. 178 pages. AFRIAMER/120518. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Cricket]. Australia, 1930
1930. The signatories are Woodfull (Captain), a'Beckett, Bradman, Fairfax, Grimmett, Hornibrook, Hurwood, Jackson, Kippax, McCabe, Oldfield, Ponsford, Richardson, Walker and Wall (as well as W.L. Kelly, the manager). The signatures were collected by the parents of a five year-old boy when the family travelled on the same ship as the cricketers on the voyage to England in early 1930. The leaves are the first two in an album with the printed image of the ship, the Orient Line's SS 'Orford', on the front cover; the original celluloid cover over the image is a little torn, but the contents are in fine condition. It wouldn't be cricket without a few statistics: Australia won the Ashes; Archie Jackson, on his only tour, played in only two Tests; a'Beckett played only one; Hurwood and Walker played none (the others played in either four or five Tests). Don Bradman scored 974 runs in the Test series (8, 131, 254, 1, 334, 14, and 232); in the 3rd Test he scored 309 runs in one day, and his 334 beat the previous Test record score of 287; he scored 2960 runs on the tour at an average of 98.86; Woodfull's 155 at Lord's was the first century by an Australian captain in England since 1896; Clarrie Grimmett took 144 wickets on the tour and four times in the Tests had five wickets in an innings ('Test Cricket Tours' website).

Frida Roginskaia
Moscow: Khudozhestv. Izdat. Akt. O-vo AKHR, 1930. Octavo 18x13.5 cm., wrappers, 96(2)pp. An early assessment of the textile production in the Soviet era. It includes some pre-revolution work and folk examples, but the main topic looks at the visual creativity that sprang up in the new era with fabrics. There are some striking examples of contemporary work illustrated here, including two in full color (Khvostenko, Nazarovskaia). The author Frida Roginskaia (1898-1963) was a widely published art critic and at this juncture holds modernist trends in high regard, although she criticizes Popova s and Stepanova s textile designs as unsuited. In the following year such refined distinctions were abandoned as the Central Committee issued standards for ornament and fabric design that would employ pre-20th century esthethics to them and constructivist ideas were jettisoned. OCLC finds three North American institutional holdings (Getty, Smith, Hillwood Estate). Fargue Loris & Parry
Paris: 1930. Voir la description dans la fiche. [PHOTOGRAPHIE] - [LORIS (Fabien) & PARRY (Roger)] - FARGUE (Léon-Paul). Melville, Herman
New York: Random House, 1930. Kent, Rockwell. Hard Cover. First Edition. Fine / Dust Jacket Included. Illustrated by Rockwell Kent. First illustrated edition. Publisher's black cloth, decorated and lettered in silver with Kent's Art Nouveau illustration of the whale emerging from the ocean; in the original pictorial dust jacket with Kent's illustration in blue and black, lettered in black. About fine, a few tiny abrasions to the bottom right corner of the front board and previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown, else fine; in a near fine dust jacket with some light rubbing to extremities and faint toning to spine, a few chips to spine head. Overall, a gorgeous copy, rare in the dust jacket. One of the great American novels, Moby Dick is narrated by Ishmael, a sailor on the Pequod. The ship is led by the tyrannical Captain Ahab who is consumed by his thirst for revenge on a ferocious sperm whale named Moby Dick. The novel employs a symbolic use of the color white - an expansion upon Melville's similar symbolism in his 1850 novel White-Jacket. Melville wrote Moby Dick as his friendship with fellow American Renaissance author Nathaniel Hawthorne was developing and dedicated the book to him. In 1926, prolific illustrator and artist Rockwell Kent was commissioned to illustrate Richard Henry Dana, Jr.'s Two Years Before the Mast, but the artist declined, choosing instead to create illustrations for Moby Dick. Kent was given full artistic license, which he used to create a now iconic series of woodcut prints, including the matching covers and dust jacket. Edward Fitzgerald
New York: Thomas Y Crowell, 1930. Amazing condition for a book from the 30's. Also comes with personal letter, see pictures for details. 172 pp., The First and Fourth. Renderings in English Verse by Edward FitzGerald. Illustrations by Willy Pogany. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell Company. Publication date - 1930. About this Work: When Edward Fitzgerald translated these 11th Century Persian Poems in 1859, they became something of a sensation after one admiring reader passed them on to his friends--a circle that included Browning, Rosetti and Tennyson. Omar Khayyam was famous in his own day as a mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher, and although his mathematical studies were once hugely influential in the West, he is known to much of the world today as a poet, and his Rubaiyat as the Chief exemplar of the Arabic verse form "roba'i," a poem composed in quatrains in which the first, second and fourth lines rhyme.
