NONESUCH PRESS.) CERVANTES, Miguel de.
London: The Nonesuch Press, 1930. 2 volumes, octavo. Original tan morocco, brown label to spines lettered in gilt, top edges gilt on the rough, others untrimmed. Very light markings to covers, else a near-fine copy. With 21 colour illustrations. First Nonesuch edition, number 171 of 1,475 copies. An attractively bound, printed and illustrated edition, the Nonesuch Don Quixote was printed by Walter Lewis, Printer to the University of Cambridge, on Casinensis hand-made paper. The illustrator, E. McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954) is best known for his modernist poster art, a style clearly present in his illustrations for Cervantes's novel. The edition uses Peter Motteux's translation of Don Quixote, from the 1743 seventh edition. Motteux's translation was first published in 1700-3, and was widely admired throughout the 18th and 19th centuries for its lucidity and wit. [Attributes: First Edition]

CALVIN COOLIDGE
TLS. 1pg. 8 ½” x 11”. April 4, 1930. Northampton, MA. A typed letter signed “Calvin Coolidge” to George Loramer of The Saturday Evening Post: “For a great many years, I have been a devoted reader of the Saturday Evening Post and it seems to me that it must be an enormous influence for good. It is especially sound on economic questions. I have not quite agreed with it about some of our Foreign affairs as you know. I am writing to you because since I have come home it has seemed to me that the Country was turning away from a position of sound economics. I cannot point to any specific evidence so that it is only a vague impression. I thought I would ask you is you have anything of the same feeling. For many years after the war, I felt we were making steady progress in the right direction…”. Just six months earlier, 1929’s Black Tuesday marked the unofficial onset of the Great Depression. The former President, who left office in March 1929, was probably trying to figure out what was occurring in the economy. The letter has light toning and mailing folds, and is in very good condition with a large autograph. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Leipzig / Berlin / Halle etc., 1911 - 1930. Octavo. c. 2000 Seiten. Hardcover / Softcover. [Click Below for Full Description]

Petersen A2.14. Hanna 1166. Coan, p. 123. Cooperman, p. 160. In 1925, Faulkner moved to New Orleans where he joined a literary circle centered on Sherwood Anderson and was introduced to the modernist innovations of T. S. Eliot and James Joyce. His interest in experimental writing was piqued, and he began a novel, his first, Soldier's Pay, portraying the tragic homecoming of a wounded war hero. Though set in Georgia, it was, nonetheless, a kind of rehearsal for the later Mississippi novels, full of despair and "mythic motifs of impotence and futile love." (The Literary Encyclopedia) Wheatley's stylish thrillers and occult novels made him one of the world's best-selling writers from the 1930s through the 1960s. EROTICA] - Grundworth studio (attributed to).
Paris c.s. Six gelatin silver prints (22 x 16 cm). Very good condition and with very good tone. Framed. A series of six nude studies showing the same model posing in the photographer's studio. The style of the photographs, which artistically combines high and low art, allows to attribute the authorship to the Grundworth studio, which is known to have been producing erotic postcards in Paris from the 1890s to the 1930s. Like most of the studios engaged in production of erotic photographs and postcards of the time, little is known about it, as, despite the widespread circulation of these cards their production and distribution was illegal in France, hence anonymity was essential. Given the time span and a number of different styles the name is unlikely to represent an individual photographer but more likely a group of photographers who were, perhaps better known, but wanted to hide their real identities.
