LEWIS, Sinclair
1930. An 6" x 7-7/8" black-and-white silver print formal portrait by Yvonne, matted and framed to an overall size of 10" x 15," of Lewis on the day he left for his honeymoon with Dorothy Thompson, SIGNED by the photographer in red pencil beneath the image. Also INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Lewis on the mat to two lifelong friends: "To Frere & Tess/with the love/of Sinclair Lewis/New York/Jan. 10, 1930." Lewis characteristically dated the photo 1929 and then realized it was 1930--a common occurrence for him whenever inscribing in January. Booze exaggerated this habit. A bit of fading along the edges of the photograph. Near Fine, not examined out of the frame [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Henry Miller
Obelisk Press. Manuscript notebook - written in the early 1930's in Paris during the author's first (and greatest) creative period. All in Henry Miller's hand. Signed over to John Martin, famous publisher of Black Sparrow Press. Also includes a watercolor of Miller's depicting the unconscious. All pages are pictured. Spiral-bound sketchbook of French manufacture. 4to. The manuscript consists of essays and autobiographical notes and is illustrated with several original Miller watercolor drawings. Approximately 1,500 words. The title, written out on the front cover in Miller's hand, is "China," whose ancient culture held a lifelong fascination for Miller and to which he regularly returned for source material. Miller free-associates in the notebook in the style of The Tropics and other Paris works, melding diverse sources - metaphysics, science, mysticism and personal observation - into his now familiar, idiosyncratic Weltanschauung. There are lists of people, places, and events Miller recalled from his childhood; notes on the symbology of color and its relation to China; a full-page watercolor depicting Miller's conception of the Ranking unconscious, and numerous watercolor designs and patterns which Miller conceived as a visual complement to his deepest thoughts. In all, a fascinating look at an incipient artist wrestling with many of the themes which were to obsess him through the next half-century. [Attributes: First Edition]

Richard Allen Metzler
Omaha, Nebraska, Ford Motor Company, Labor Relations, Greatest Generation, 1930-1945. Omaha, Nebraska: Omaha, Nebraska, Ford Motor Company, Labor Relations, Greatest Generation. Good. 1930-1945. Hardcover. On offer is a rare 14-volume archive of diaries that chart the course of an American boy's life through the Great Depression and World War II a classic member of 'the Greatest Generation'. This is an outstanding archive of diaries that document the life of a man throughout his boyhood in Midwestern America throughout the Great Depression and into WWII. The author of this archive is Richard Allen Metzler. He was born in 1920 in Omaha, Nebraska where his father, Clyde, was a dentist. He married Doris Cuthbert in 1946. He worked his entire career with Ford Motor Company. His wife taught with distinction in the Dearborn Public Schools system. He passed away in 2000 at the age of 80. His diaries begin at age 10 and continue until he is 25. This is a terrific collection. It traces this boy's growth as a young child, teenager, college student and young man through some of the most momentous years of the 20th century. As would be expected, his writing matures over the years as he begins to add reflection and nuance to his daily entries.. Taken as a whole, they offer a superb picture of growing up in the America in the pre-war years. The following excerpts will give a sense of the flavour of these diaries: "This afternoon, Paul {Richard's brother] went downtown with Bob Muchow and went to a show. Tonight, Eddie came over and we played down in the basement" [Mar … [Click Below for Full Description]

EVANS, Walker.) CRANE, Hart.
Paris: The Black Sun Press, 1930. Tall quarto. Original white wrapper, titles to spine and front wrapper in red and black. Vertical cracks to wrappers down spine with titles largely rubbed away, covers a little spotted, but still a sound copy in good condition. 3 plates from photographs by Walker Evans. First edition, first impression, number 89 of 200 copies on Holland Paper from a total limited edition of 284 copies. The Bridge was Crane's only attempt at a long poem, inspired by his view of the Brooklyn Bridge from his apartment in Columbia Heights, and includes three plates from photographs of the bridge by his friend Walker Evans. Harold Bloom praised the poem for "its astonishing transformation of the sublime ode into an American epic, uneven certainly but beyond The Waste Land in aspiration and accomplishment" (Complete Poems of Hart Crane, Liveright, 2000). This shimmering first appearance was one of several exquisitely produced books put out by the Black Sun Press, founded by the wild and wealthy expatriate couple Harry and Caresse Crosby. Harry Crosby (1898-1929) was heir to one of Boston's wealthiest banking families, but after serving as an ambulance driver during the First World War he met and fell in love with a married lady, Mary Peabody (née Jacob) - they fled to Paris, married, and she changed her name to Caresse. Harry and Caresse embedded themselves in the avant-garde cultural scene, befriending the likes of Dalí, Hemingway and Cartier-Bresson, founded the Black Sun Press which helped to publish the early works of Joyce, Eliot, Pound and Hart Crane, and l … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gershwin, George
1930. Rare original black and white photograph of Gershwin playing the piano, boldly inscribed by Gershwin, "For Mary Maggenti- Every good wish, George Gershwin May 20, 1930." Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 15 by 13.5 inches. In near fine condition. American composer and pianist George Gershwin's orchestral compositions spanned the genres of popular, jazz, and classical music and are now considered to be some of the most important musical works of the twentieth century. Gershwin began his career composing Broadway theatre works with his brother Ira Gershwin and soon became a major figure in musical theatre in New York City and later Hollywood. Gershwin's classic Song-Book is illustrated with full-page color lithographic plates after Constantin Alajalov, and includes such Gershwin standards as "Swanee," "Fascinating Rhythm," "That Certain Feeling," "The Man I Love," "Strike Up the Band," and "I Got Rhythm," among others. "In one of his few prose writings, George provided an introduction for the song book. What is most important. is that it contained the original published version of each song, followed side by side by George's 'improvised' versions of the songs" (Carnovale, 14).
