Paramount
1930. Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 35 cm.) lobby card, USA. W. C. Fields, Martha Raye, Dorothy Lamour, Shirley Ross, Bob Hope, Lynne Overman, Ben Blue, dir: Mitchell Leisen; Paramount. One of the finest and best remembered of the 1930s musicals, if for no other reason than the introduction, by Ross and Hope (his first feature role), of the classic song "Thanks for the Memory" (it won the Academy Award). Martha Raye, who did her own stunts in a raucously entertaining number, was ingeniously cast as W. C. Fields' daughter (in his last film for Paramount). Everyone shone in their musical moments in a story which concerned a race between two ocean liners, from which the new S.S. Gigantic had a big radio broadcast emitting (you see, the turbine engine worked on radio waves is the explanation!). Fields plays T. Frothingill Bellows, brother to the owner of the ship, who with his daughter Martha (Martha Raye) are sent to cause trouble on the rival ship. They end up on the S.S. Gigantic instead and comically impede the ship's chances of winning, NEAR FINE.

1930. Vintage original 27 x 41" (68 x 102 cm.) one sheet poster, USA. W. Amongst the numbers broadcast and lavishly staged were Kirsten Flagstad performing Wagner in full opera regalia. The radio audience was not able to see the extravagant finale concerning the history of dance, but the film audience could. Direction by Mitchell Leisen lifted the film above the normal musical faire of the period. On linen, NEAR FINE.

BEDE
1930. BEDE. The History of the Church of Englande… Translated out of Latin into English by Thomas Stapleton. Oxford: Basil Blackwell (Shakespeare Head Press), 1930. Quarto, later full brown morocco, raised bands. $2250.Beautiful 1930 private-press limited edition, one of only 475 copies, of Stapleton’s 1565 English translation of the Venerable Bede’s History of the Church of England, a valuable sourcebook for Medieval British history and regarded as “a classic among churchmen.” Printed in red and black and illustrated with the four “spirited woodcuts of the original edition” (re-engraved by John Farleigh) and a map of “Bede’s Britain.” Handsomely bound.First published around 1473, Bede's history of the Church of England was the first work of its kind, a fascinating Medieval sourcebook of early English history from the time of the Roman empire to the 8th century. It was so highly regarded that King Alfred had it translated into Old English for the instruction of his people, ""as this book had become a kind of classic among churchmen"" (R.H. Hodgkin). The five books contain the sending of the Roman mission and the foundation of the Church, the period of missionary activity and the establishment of Christianity throughout England, a description of the period of central organization, and the English Church as the founder of a missionary movement, drawing the Celtic Churches into conformity. This handsome edition of Bede was printed at the Shakespeare Head Press, from Stapleton's 1565 English translation. The Press was founded b … [Click Below for Full Description]

Luza, Reynaldo (Illustrations by)
Rogers Bros Silverplate, International Silver and Co, Meriden, CT, 1930. Folio. Unpaginated. [14]pp. Original spiral bound black and silver decorative stiff wrappers. This splendid work introduces "Silhouette," the new silverware pattern from 1847 Rogers Bros.* Illustrated with two tipped-in heliogravures and two striking pochoir plates by Reynaldo Luza, this catalogue was created and printed in Paris by Draeger. Head and tail of spine slightly chipped. Moderate and sporadic creasing to covers. Wrappers in overall good-, interior in very good, pochoir plates in near fine to fine condition. * The Rogers Brothers (Simeon, and William) had established a shop in Hartford, Connecticut in the 1840s. The brothers were known for the high quality of their wares and when they felt they had perfected the electroplating process** in 1847 they marked their product with their name. In 1862 the Rogers brothers moved to Meriden, Connecticut, the center of the Britannia ware industry. Britannia ware, an alloy that resembled pewter, could easily be cast into fancy hollowware pitchers and other decorative articles, which were then electroplated. Rogers Bros. became part of the Meriden Britannia company. The Meriden Britannia company absorbed dozens of other silverware makers in the area and expanded its operation overseas, after which it became known as the International Silver Company. International Silver may have used the 1847 Rogers mark as early as 1852. The successor to the International Silver Company is still in business and uses the 1847 trademark to this day. Popular patterns in 184 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Winston S. Churchill
London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1930. First edition, third printing. Hardcover. This homely copy is rendered exceptional by the extravagantly rare dust jacket. This is the first edition, third printing of Churchill’s only and extremely popular autobiography, published in November 1930, swiftly following the first and second printings of October. The third printing dust jacket is identical in every respect to that of the first printing. The volume is nearly identical to the first printing, excepting only the printing history on the copyright page. My Early Life has seen a great many editions, many of them collectible, but of course a premium attaches to first editions, with jacketed examples being among the most sought and elusive prizes in the Churchill canon. The vivid plum color of both the binding and dust jacket proved incredibly vulnerable to sunning. Whether because of sunning, the fact that this popular book appears to have been widely read, or both, very few first edition dust jackets survive. Neither we nor Churchill’s bibliographer have ever recorded a jacketed third printing, likely owing to the great temptation to transfer any third printing dust jacket to a first printing book; any respectable jacketed first printing now commands a five-figure sum. This copy is in good plus condition, its accompanying jacket poor, noteworthy for its mere presence rather than condition. The volume’s plum cloth binding is square, tight, and mostly bright. The spine is appreciably sunned only at the upper left, lower right, and at a few tin … [Click Below for Full Description]

H.P. Lovecraft
1930. Never mind nightmarish visions, the greatest nightmare from HPL is his handwriting. Text (perhaps with errors): "Later - June 9. Young Ar E'ch-Bei has held this epistle up several days, wishing to ??? one enclosure. Meanwhile the envelope of your drawings has come, and he is in ecstasies over them. He keeps them always within reach and takes them out to gaze at every few minutes - and has made copies of many of them as best he can. I hope you can fashion[?} up regarding --- any theological matters. He wants all the available data on Tsathoggua - have you still the bits from 'The Mound' that I sent you when casting up that tale in 1930? I went yesterday to Silver Springs, where the bottom of a lake is riddled with picturesque views seen from a glass-bottomed boat. Also sailed 60 miles down a tropical river which looked very much like the Amazon or Congo. The scenes for the ??? of 'Tarzan" are made here. I must send you a folder of the place - one of the most distractive and fascinating spots I have ever seen. [thank]? you for the eternal infra-red flame" The postcard was written whilst he was in Florida visiting R.H. Barlow - so 9th June 1934. Brown University have a card from Florida dated Jun 17th 1934. The picture side of both are similar, this one showing bananas with Florida stated. No stamp and given the content of the card it's assumed it was sent with something else. The postcard has mention of Ar E'ch-bei (RH Barlow) at the beginning, as does the Brown one. Now, tracking down the recipient has been tricky, but it seems in all likelihood to have been Clark Asht … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHAMBERLAIN-ANDREWS, Victor William.
Egypt: , 1930-2. Landscape quarto album (210 x 304 mm), brown cloth-backed maroon morocco-textured paper covered boards, brownish pink marbled pastedowns 34 tipped-in delicately rendered water colour sketches with pencil under-drawing of scenes in Egypt, various sizes between c.100 x 130 mm and c240 x 160 mm. Decorative title page lettered as above in white ink, each image captioned in white ink, many initialed and dated. Original tissue-guards in place. Album a little rubbed, the spine neatly restored, one empty leaf with a section cut away, one leaf neatly removed, the sketches themselves in excellent condition, overall very good. An extremely appealing collection of highly competent "officer quality" sketches. The subject matter is fairly typical - views on the Nile, in Cairo, the Ibrahim Agha mosque, in and around Damietta, Mansoura and Talkha, and a sequence of smaller "snap shots" of types, mat making, the forge, the vegetable shop - but the treatment and technique are really quite unusual. The most successful of his images are quite loosely rendered with dashes of vivid colour to suggest the intensity of light; his studies of architecture quite effectively combine washes of colour with crisper detail to similar effect; his handling of cloud formations in the landscapes particularly well-observed and engaging. Victor William Chamberlain-Andrews (1897-1982), commissioned in 1917, he served as a lieutenant in the Hampshire and Leicestershire Regiments during World War I, fought at Cambrai. For a period in 1930 and 40s Chamberlain-Andrews was based in Egypt, records … [Click Below for Full Description]

N.p, 1930. Frost, John. Twelve 8-1/2 x 11 inch sheets, all but one written on both sides in pencil in Frost's beautifully legible hand. 1 vols. A fascinating and frequently moving group of letters, in which Frost discusses his work ("I just finished a canvas from memory of that Maryland country.Everything I've done up to this has been a flop as I've been pressing and overworking--but I think I've gotten hold of the thing again. That woodcock stuff is God Awful hard to do, hard not to get it all broken up and cluttered with detail"), his personal problems ("I have certainly been taking no care of myself for years--jacking myself up with liquor to keep going for heaven knows how long"), business matters concerning his work for The Sportsman magazine and others ("If it costs more to make a single plate and if you can get the Woodcock and Sportsman [to] agree to that program tell them to take the cost of printing out of what they were to pay for the use of the originals"), and makes occasional references to his famous father ("Do you remember Dad's old fishing 'comic' "How did you come to fall in?" "I didn't come to fall in, I came to fish"). In 1934, Frost painted an oil on commision by Connett, entitled Maryland Marsh, printed as a sporting aquatint by the Derrydale Press in 1936. Frost, who notes in these letters his concern that his tuberculosis had flared up again, died in 1937. A UNIQUE AND SPECIAL CORRESPONDENCE. From the collection of Eugene V. DE QUINCEY, Thomas (GAY, Zhenya)
Limited Editions Club, Oxford, 1930. Small folio (10-1/4" x 13-1/2") consisting of 10 loose lithographs drawn on the stone by Zhenya Gay, each SIGNED by the artist. laid into the first signature of the book which in turn is laid into a cloth-backed marbled board folder with a large paper label on the front cover and with ribbon ties. Printed on hand-made Kelmscott paper by B. H. Newdigate at the Shakespeare Head Press. There was a total edition of 1520 copies illustrated with 12 lithographs and SIGNED by the artist and the printer on the limitation page. This is a special publication, not known previously by us and, having been acquired directly from the publisher's files, is likely unique. Each of the 10 lithographs is SIGNED by the artist, which was not the case with the printed book. The inner first signature folder consists of the title page, the limitation page on the verso which is SIGNED by the artist but not by the printer, and the half-title page with the verso blank. Also laid in is a sheet of paper on which is written in pencil "Supplementary Set" with measurements and other calculations on the verso. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
