(Anglo-Catholic Liturgical Manuscript)
n.p.: n.p., 1930. Hardcover. Very good. 76 pages of calligraphy and musical notation. The Office of Tenebrae begins the book, with the use of black, red, green, blue and purple inks. The musical notation is four-line Gregorian chant in English. A later hand has added come corrections and an additional Psalm. This is followed by the Office of Compline and a section of Canticles all in the later hand. Compline is noted in Gregorian chant, also four lines, but the Canticles are set to Anglican chant in modern notation, either SATB or SSATB. No place of production is noted. The paper of Tenebrae is handmade Whatmore paper dated 1928 in the watermark. The addition and remaining offices are also Whatmore paper of a slighly larger size, but undated. Based on the watermark we believe this was produced early 1930's And based on the language, the Anglican chant, and the numbering of the Psalms, it is almost cetainly Anglo-Catholic and not Roman Catholic, possibly from northern England and possibly from a monastic house. At some point the leaves were punched for a looseleaf binder. They have now been gaurded and bound in half black morocco, with black watered silk cloth sides and endpapers. Some of the red ink used in the later sectons has offset but overall this is a very good example.

Shaw, George Bernard
Wm. H. Wise 1930-32, New York. The collected works of Nobel Prize-winning author George Bernard Shaw. Octavo, 30 volumes, bound in full leather, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, gilt tooling to the front and rear panels, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, frontispieces. In fine condition. An exceptional set. George Bernard Shaw was an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist and political activist. He wrote more than sixty plays, including major works such as Man and Superman (1902), Pygmalion (1912) and Saint Joan (1923). With a range incorporating both contemporary satire and historical allegory, Shaw became the leading dramatist of his generation, and in 1925 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Born in Dublin, Shaw moved to London in 1876, where he struggled to establish himself as a writer and novelist, and embarked on a rigorous process of self-education. By the mid-1880s he had become a respected theatre and music critic. Following a political awakening, he joined the gradualist Fabian Society and became its most prominent pamphleteer. Shaw had been writing plays for years before his first public success, Arms and the Man in 1894. Influenced by Henrik Ibsen, he sought to introduce a new realism into English-language drama, using his plays as vehicles to disseminate his political, social and religious ideas. By the early twentieth century his reputation as a dramatist was secured with a series of critical and popular successes that included Major Barbara, The Doctor's Dilemma and Caesar and Cleopatra. Krestovskaya, M.A.
Moscow; Leningrad: Teakinopechat', 1930. 112 pp.: ill. 22x15 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Very good. Wrappers detached from the text block. First and only edition. One of 10070 copies. Rare. Illustrations by E.A. Zernova. The edition was sponsored and published by N.K. Krupskaya Central House of Amateur Art in City and Village. This organization was initially established in 1909 as Village Theatre Promotion Commission. Around famous artist V.D. Polenov actors, directors, and artists were united. They helped amateurs in the search and adaptation of the repertoire, in the manufacture of sets and costumes. At the expense of Polenov and with the support of the patron S.I. Mamontov for these purposes was built an unusual mansion where, in the words of Polenov, "theatrical work throughout Russia" was unfolded. In January 1921, 'Polenov's House' was transformed into the Polenov's House of Theater Education. The widespread discussion of mass amateur performances now carried out in line with the party-state ideology. Only in 1929, four All-Russian conferences were held, which widely covered the tasks and current work of the Polenov's House. In July 1929, at the first All-Russian Conference on Rural Political Education, the question was raised of renaming the Polenov's House as the Central House of Amateur Art in the city and village named after N.K. Krupskaya. This organization exists today as the State Russian House of Folk Art named after V.D. Polenov. This guide was created in order to provide knowledge for drama clubs' supervisors how to start the work, what are the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Deberny et Peignot
Deberny et Peignot (1930). SPECIMEN GENERAL des Fonderies. T -I Deberny et Peignot Publicado por Deberny et Peignot (1928)? Encuadernacion de tapa dura. Condicion: Muy bien. 1ª Edicin. 1st Ed.Deberny et Peignot Una verdadera Joya s.d.Ca 1933. ? A page from the guest book register of the Hebrew College in Havana, Cuba signed by Albert Einstein. On his journey to America, the scientist stopped in Havana for a little over a day. In addition to touring the island and meeting dignitaries, Einstein first traveled to the Jewish community and specifically the "Colegio Hebrew del Centro Israelita de Cuba" during his 30 hour visit to Cuba which started on December 19, 1930. The double-sided guest book page has 16 entries, dating from September 12, 1929 to March 9, 1931. Some of the visitors who signed the guest book were from the island but several were from the USA. Most of the American visitors were fellow Zionists and/or helped to raise funds for various Jewish causes. The page was folded, and has numerous paper clip creases and rust stains, a few small perforations from staples, and has moderate soiling and wear. Included is also a small loose contemporary newsprint photograph of Einstein from a Spanish language newspaper. The entries, in chronological order, as best as could be transcribed are: 09/12/29 O. Lopez, as Inspector Auxilier; 11/14/29 Oscar Lopez giving address as 177 Enrique Villuendas; lengthy handwritten comment in Spanish by O. Novlianskii, N[ikolai] M[ikhailovich] and V.F. Ryndin, illustrator; B.D. Fabisovich, photography
Moscow: Teakinopechiat', 1930. Oblong folio (25 × 36 cm). Original side-stapled pictorial wrappers; [48] pp. Illustrated throughout. Light soil to wrappers; spine extremities frayed; wrapper edges chipped; text and plates bright and clean. First edition. Apractical guide for theatrical make up application, written by the Soviet theater and film actor Nikolai Novlianskii. Over one hundred colorful illustrations and accompanying texts instruct on the creation of a variety of effects, using make up to help depict persons of different ages, a variety of 'types' such as the capitalist, the clergy, the kulak, the intellectual, the prostitute etc., different disabilities or 'pathologies' such as the blind, the mad, Gogolian and Ostrovskian characters, and perhaps most problematically, individuals of different races, including Asian and African. The guide also shows how to change the actor's facial structure with the help of added prostheses and use make up to create animal and skeletal guises. Nikolai Novlianskii (1892-1966) came to prominence as a theater actor in 1924 when he joined the Moscow Chamber Theater of Alexander Tairov. Condemned for formalism and excessive experimentation the theater was closed in 1949, forcing Novlianskii to move to the more traditional Pushkin theater. Throughout his career in theater and film, Novlianskii was also known as a master of make up. He offered extensive lectures on make up at the Moscow Technical College of Theater Arts (modern day GITIS) and published three monographs on make up, starting with this publication, promoted in the introduct … [Click Below for Full Description]
